Saint Joseph of Calasanz
San Jose de Calasanz
Saint Joseph Calasanz, founder of the first Christian
public school and of the Piarist Order, was born in Peralta de la
Sal, in Spain, in 1557. Nine years after being ordained as a priest,
Calasanz went to Rome, where he was moved by the misery of
young people in the city's poorest neighborhoods. He heard the
voice of the Lord telling him: "Joseph, offer yourself to the poor.
Teach these children and protect them."
Thus, Calasanz founded the "world's first free public
school" at the Church of Saint Dorothy of Rome. His educational
goal was reflected in his motto "Piety and Learning" that today
we read as "Faith and Culture". He called his work "Pious
Schools".
His Educational ideas were based on respect for the
personality of each child, seeing in every one of them the image
of Christ. With his Pious Schools, he tried to fulfill the physical
and spiritual needs of the young in his care. Calasanz was a friend
of Galileo Galilei, the great scientist, and subjects such as science
and mathematics, as well as the humanities, played an important
role in the education of youth. To continue and deepen his
educational aims, he founded the Order of Pious Schools, a
religious order whose members, known as the Piarist Fathers,
take four solemn religious vows: poverty, chastity, obedience and
dedication to educating the young.
Calasanz died in Rome on August 25, 1648, convinced
that the Order and his dream would not die with him. He was
proven right when in 1767 he was made a saint, and Pope Pious
XII declared him a "universal patron of all Christian popular
schools" in 1948. Pope John Paul II stated that Saint Joseph
Calasanz followed Christ as a model and tried to instill in young
people not only the knowledge of science but also the wisdom of
the Gospel, teaching them to appreciate the loving action of God.
The Church celebrates his feast day on August 25th

primera escuela pública cristiana y de los Padres
Escolapios, nació en Peralta de la Sal, en España, en
1557. Nueve años después de ser ordenado sacerdote,
partió hacia Roma, donde se conmovió con la miseria de
la juventud del barrio más pobre de la ciudad. Escuchó
la voz del Señor, que le dijo: "José: entrégate a los
pobres. Enseña a estos niños y cuida de ellos".
Así, Calasanz fundó, en la Iglesia de Santa
Dorotea de Roma, la "primera escuela pública y gratuita
del mundo". Su meta educativa quedó resumida en su
lema de "piedad y letras", que hoy podríamos leer como
“fe y cultura”. Llamó a su obra "Escuelas Pías".
El centro de sus ideas educativas fue el respeto
por la personalidad de cada niño viendo en ellos la
imagen de Cristo. Con sus Escuelas Pías, trató de cubrir
las necesidades físicas y espirituales de los jóvenes bajo
su cuidado. Calasanz fue amigo de Galileo, el gran
científico, y dió gran importancia a las ciencias y a las
matemáticas, así como a las humanidades, en la
educación de la juventud. Para continuar y profundizar
su labor educativa, fundó la Orden de las Escuelas Pías,
una orden religiosa cuyos miembros, conocidos como los
escolapios, profesan cuatro votos religiosos solemnes:
pobreza, castidad, obediencia, y dedicación a la
educación de la juventud.
Calasanz murió en Roma, el 25 de agosto de
1648, convencido de que la Orden y su sueño no
morirían con él. Y así fue, pues fue declarado santo en
1767, y el Papa Pío XII lo declaró, en 1948, "Celestial
Patrono de todas las escuelas populares cristianas". El
Papa Juan Pablo II afirmó que San José de Calasanz
tomó por modelo a Cristo e intentó transmitir a los
jóvenes, además de la ciencia la sabiduría del Evangelio,
enseñándoles a captar la acción amorosa de Dios. La
Iglesia celebra su fiesta el día 25 de agosto.

“Tomando los cinco panes y los dos
peces, alzó la mirada al cielo, pronunció la
bendición, partió los panes y se los dio a
los discípulos”
(Mt 14, 19)
Queridos hermanos: Escuchamos en el evangelio
de hoy la narración del milagro de la multiplicación
de los peces y los panes. Y cómo el Señor da de
comer a todo el pueblo que le seguía porque El
tiene Palabras de Vida Eterna. Y nosotros hoy, al
igual que hace más de veinte siglos, seguimos
teniendo hambre de justicia, de amor, de sanación,
de esperanza, de misericordia, de verdad, de fe.
Tenemos hambre de aprender lo que significa:
“misericordia quiero y no sacrificios”. Tenemos
hambre de sinceridad en un mundo donde reina la
hipocresía y la mentira, donde nuestras relaciones
personales se convierten en una farsa. ¿Cuántas
veces no estamos dando al hermano el beso de
Judas?
Es decir que le saludamos con la boca y le maldecimos
con el corazón. El corazón vacío del hombre está
hambriento de amor y de encontrar el verdadero sentido
a su vida. Sabemos que este sentido verdadero a la vida
de cada uno no lo da el tener, sino el ser. El ser
auténtico, el ser de Dios.
El amor multiplica y nos enseña a compartir. Cada uno
de nosotros podemos recordar ocasiones en nuestra
vida en las que hemos experimentado que repartir es en
realidad multiplicar. Especialmente cuando lo que damos
lo hacemos desde el corazón. No de lo que nos sobra,
sino de lo que nos falta.

Los cristianos no damos algo de nuestro tiempo,
sino que nos entregamos incondicionalmente al
servicio de Dios, sabiendo que estamos generando
vida en aquellos que lo necesitan.
Por eso, mis queridos hermanos, es tan importante
el compartir lo que soy y lo que tengo, mis talentos y
mis dones, mi tiempo, mi dinero. Y hacerlo desde la
gratuidad porque gratuitamente he recibido todo de
parte de Dios. Porque no olvidemos que el amor
multiplica y nos ayuda a compartir.
Que Dios, nuestro Señor, les bendiga a ustedes y a
cada una de sus familias.

M. Teresa de Calcuta nos invita a “dar hasta que nos
duela”.
Muchas veces hemos olvidado que más importante que
el dar es el DARSE. Darse a los demás con alegría, con
entrega verdadera, con generosidad. Porque cuando me
doy estoy dando amor. Cuando damos a veces, sólo lo
hacemos en lo material, pero no nos entregamos
nosotros como personas con todo nuestro ser.

“…He took the five loaves and the two fish,
looked up to Heaven, and gave thanks to God.
He broke the loaves and gave them to the
disciples…” (Mt 14:19)
Dear Brethren: We listened from today’s Gospel
about the miracle of the multiplication of fish and
loaves. The Lord feeds those who followed Him
because He has everlasting words. After twenty
centuries, we still continue to long for Justice,
Love, Healing, Hope, Mercy, Truth, and Faith.
We are eager to learn what it means: “I want Mercy
and not sacrifices”. We are avid for sincerity in a
world where hypocrisy and disappointment reign,
where our personal relationships become a farce.
¿How many times do we give a brother the kiss of
Judas? In other words, we greet him with the mouth
and curse him with the heart. The empty heart of
man is yearning for love and to find the true sense
to his life. We know the true meaning of
everyone’s life does not come from having, but it
comes from being. The authentic being, God’s
Being.
Love multiplies and teaches us to share. Each of us
can recall occasions in our life in which we have
experienced that distribute really means multiply,
especially when we give from our hearts –no
leftovers but what we want. Mother Theresa of
Calcutta invites us “to give until it hurts”. Most of
the time we have forgotten that DEVOTING
oneself is more important than giving. Devote
ourselves to others with joy, true devotion,
generosity because when we give ourselves, we’re
giving Love. So often when we give, we just give
material things. We don’t devote with all our being.
This is the reason why we as Christians do not give
alms but share our wealth. When I give my tithe
every week, I give a portion of my possessions so
that other have life and have it abundantly. I give to
the Lord in thanksgiving a little bit of what He
gives me every day of my life: health, wellbeing,
love to others, the love He has for me, the gifts He
fawns on me every morning when I get up and
leave to sow in the field of life, the seed of His
Love.
Christians don’t give some of their time but they
devote unconditionally to God’s service, knowing
that they are generating life in those in needs.
Therefore, dear brothers it is so important to share
what I am and what I have: my talents and gifts,
time, money; but share it from gratuity because
gratuitously I have received everything from God.
Do not forget that Love multiplies and helps us
to share. May God, our Lord, bless you and your
family.

En diferentes artículos publicados recientemente en
diarios locales y en televisión, quedó reflejado el
esfuerzo que realiza nuestra iglesia, en asociación
con “Manhattan Together” y otros grupos religiosos,
para mejorar las condiciones de vivienda en los
“proyectos” de la ciudad.
Several articles published recently in local newspapers
and television stations reflected the efforts made by our
Church, in conjunction with the association “Manhattan
Together” and other religious groups, to improve
housing conditions in the city‟s projects.
A instancias de "Manhattan Together", el canal 7 de
televisión en sus noticieros publicó recientemente un
extenso segmento sobre las pésimas condiciones que
tienen que soportar los residentes de los conjuntos
habitacionales de la ciudad, entre los que se encuentran
muchos de nuestros parroquianos. La falta de
mantenimiento que existe en estos edificios es notable
y hasta ha provocado enfermedades a varios moradores.
Los residentes no hallan respuestas a sus
preocupaciones y quejas, muchas de las cuales datan de
hace varios meses.
Asimismo, movidos por estas actividades, los diarios
“The New York Times” y “Daily News” han reflejado
en sus páginas los esfuerzos de nuestra comunidad por
resolver este problema que afecta no sólo a parte de
nuestros parroquianos, sino también a residentes de
otros conjuntos habitacionales de la cuidad.
“Manhattan Together” ha venido organizando a
residentes para canalizar sus quejas de forma conjunta,
para así ejercer una mayor presión sobre las autoridades
que por años han venido haciendo oídos sordos a estas
peticiones. Los edificios están en decadencia y nuestros
parroquianos se ven obligados a soportar situaciones
verdaderamente deplorables.
Nuestra Iglesia es parte activa de “Manhattan
Together”, donde mantenemos una representación que
trabaja arduamente por causas de nuestra iglesia y de la
comunidad de nuestra ciudad en general. Además, esta
organización sin fines de lucro ha sido y está siendo
crucial en el impulso de causas que afectan
directamente a nuestros feligreses. De esta manera,
nuestro trabajo parroquial se une al esfuerzo de otras
organizaciones religiosas por fortalecer nuestras bases.
Los hermanos en fe debemos estar unidos.
Encouraged by "Manhattan Together," recently
Channel 7 News aired a comprehensive segment on the
poor conditions that the residents of the city‟s projects
––many of whom belong to our Church–– are forced to
live in. The lack of maintenance in these buildings is
notoriously serious and it has even made some of the
dwellers sick. The residents haven‟t found answers to
their concerns and complaints, which date back to
several months ago.
Moved by these events, “The New York Times” and
the “Daily News” have reported on our community‟s
efforts to solve a problem that not only affects some of
the members of our Church, but also some residents of
the city‟s projects.
“Manhattan Together” has been working with tenants to
channel their complaints into a single action so that we
may exert greater pressure on local authorities who, for
years, have turned a deaf ear on the requests to act.
The buildings are in decay and our churchgoers are
forced to withstand truly miserable conditions.
Our Church is an active part of “Manhattan Together,”
where we hold a group that works very hard for the
causes concerning our Church and our city‟s
community. Additionally this non-profit organization
has been and continues to be crucial to the development
of causes directly affecting members of our Church.
This is a way to make our pastoral work join the efforts
made by other religious organizations to strengthen our
bases. Brothers in faith we must stand united.

Convent Avenue is named after the Convent of the
Blessed Sisters of Manhattanville who had a a
Catholic women's college (Manhattanville College of
the Sacred Heart aka Manhattanville Academy) and
convent here in Harlem more than 150 years ago.
Manhattanville College has since moved to upstate
Purchase NY. The building that is now Mott Hall
School is all that remains of the College/Convent of
the Manhattanville Sisters. Along with famous
alumnae like Rose and Ethel Kennedy, their most
visible legacy today s the name of the Avenue that
is home to the Church of the Annunciation.
