“to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord” (Is. 61:2)
In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus’ mission begins with his proclaiming the
prophet Isaiah’s call for a Jubilee Year – a year made sacred by “…
proclaiming liberty…every one shall return to his own property…the
land is [the Lord’s]…so all land shall be redeemed…all [debts] shall be
released…” (Lev. 25) - a celebration proclaimed by the Law, read by
Ezra and manifest in a harmonious union between God and all creation
which will “…bring glad tidings to the poor… proclaim liberty to
captives… recovery of sight to the blind… let the oppressed go free” (Lk.
4:18)
At the end of every Mass Jesus; whom we have encountered in the
real presence; missions us into the world to make this same proclamation
to everyone we meet, to bring God’s mercy to the world. Pope Francis,
in his Bull of Indiction, Misericordiae Vultus, calling for a Jubilee Year
of Mercy, stated “This Holy Year will bring to the fore the richness of
Jesus’ mission echoed in the words of the prophet: to bring a word and
gesture of consolation to the poor, to proclaim liberty to those bound by
new forms of slavery in modern society, to restore sight to those who can
see no more because they are caught up in themselves, to restore dignity
to all those from whom it has been robbed. The preaching of Jesus is
made visible once more in the response of faith which Christians are
called to offer by their witness.”(16) This is the reason that I have begun
to mission us forth to ‘proclaim the mercy of God to the world’.
In living this mission we might reflect on what exactly ‘a year
acceptable to the Lord’ means in our lives; who are the poor who need to
hear our glad tidings; to what captives do we need to proclaim liberty;
who are the oppressed we need to set free; to what blindness do we need
to give sight? More fundamentally we might reflect on
when God has brought glad tidings into my life; set me
free; given me sight? For I can only show mercy
because God has shown mercy to me, I cannot give
what I do not have. Throughout the Scriptures we are
constantly called to be ‘merciful as God is merciful’,
to mimic a God who is merciful, even when we least
deserve mercy.
What does this mean in my everyday life?
Obviously it means to seek pardon and to grant pardon
for the times I have offended others. To truly mean and
live the words I pray in the Our Father ‘….forgive us our sins, as we have
forgiven others….’ But it is more than this; God’s mercy is proactive, not
reactive. God does not sit and wait to forgive, but goes out and seeks
(see Luke 15:11-32) as a Father whose love is so prodigal he runs to his
‘lost’ son, embraces him, welcomes him back and at the same time will
not let his obedient son’s anger to keep him from knowing not only is he
always invited to the banquet, but also to forgive. We must be proactive;
forgive before we are asked, love those who hate us, see everyone we
encounter more than a friend we have yet to meet, but a brother or sister
we must come to know and to love.
In our baptisms we were incorporated into the body of Christ, made
members of the family of God, anointed as priest, prophet and king to
proclaim the Kingdom of God here and now, so in our own homes we
must begin to treat each other as Emmanuel, God with us. It means, as
Pope Francis says, using three simple phrases; ‘may I’, ‘thank you’,
‘forgive me’. Communicating with each other, asking permission so
everyone knows what the other is doing; expressing how deeply thankful
we are not only for the big things others do, but for the ordinary,
everyday, routine occurrences; admitting when we have hurt others,
seeking their forgiveness, resolving to try to never hurt them again and
letting go of any resentment we feel for the offenses of others. Being
merciful means seeking an encounter with the person of Jesus, resting in
his presence, and being open to the transformation this intimate
relationship instigates.
Having encountered God in the person of Jesus; in the divine Logos
proclaimed, in the shared prayers of the Church, in the Eucharistic
celebration, in Communion with God and neighbor; we experience again
being created in the ‘divine image’ (Gn 1:27), being blessed and being
sent.
Go forth in peace living God’s mercy with your lives.

quienes debemos liberar; a qué ceguera debemos dar vista.
misericordioso
porque
Dios
Creer y vivir realmente
llegar a conocer y amar.
Francisco, significa usar tres simples frases; 'puedo', 'gracias',
celebración Eucarística, en Comunión con Dios y nuestro prójimo;
vidas.

Healing Broken Hearts-One Weekend at a Time.
Pope Francis has designated this year as the Holy Year of Mercy and to, “Be merciful as your
Father is merciful,” as Jesus told his disciples in Luke 6:36. This year 2016 is an opportunity
for spiritual conversion, recognizing how much God loves and cares for us. It is also a time to
be merciful towards ourselves, reorienting our hearts to God so that we can be our best selves
as we move forward in life.
If you have emotional or spiritual wounds as a result of a past abortion, please consider attending our upcoming Rachel’s Vineyard weekend retreat February 5-7, 2016. These retreats are therapy of the soul, with
Christ as our loving physician. It is an opportunity for women and men to experience the graces of this merciful, holy year
and renew and rebuild hearts broken by abortion and life’s circumstances. Participation is strictly confidential. For more information, please contact Mary Huber at 909-475-5353 or [email protected] or www.Rachelsvineyard.org

Our Social Justice ministry is always moving. We are
grateful for everything that this ministry does to help our
parishioners with matters of social justice. Recently they
assisted the Diocese of San Bernardino with the Migration
Mass and now they are getting ready for the free Citizenship
classes which will begin in February. We are especially
grateful for all that Sandra Gonzalez does for this ministry.
THANK YOU!!!
¡GRACIAS!
