If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and God will glorify him at once. My children, I will be with you only a little while longer. I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” Parish Office Hours Monday: 9AM-6PM (closed between 12:30-1:30PM) Tuesday thru Friday: 9AM-7PM Saturday: 10AM-2PM Sunday: Closed From the Pastor • Del Pastor Dear Friends, Queridos Amigos: Last week I promised you a column about Pope Francis’ new Apostolic Exhortation, Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love). I made it my goal to read the entire document … and life got in the way! I did notice that, in his introduction, Pope Francis encouraged us to read the document carefully and reflect on its message slowly. I do plan to do that in the future! I have read several commentaries, including one by Fr. Thomas Reese, S.J., that recommended beginning with chapter 4, Love In Marriage. I took his advice and would like to share a brief and practical section from that chapter: Me propuse el objetivo de leer todo el documento… y la vida me puso cosas en el camino! The love of friendship unifies all aspects of marital life and helps family members to grow constantly. This love must be freely and generously expressed in words and acts. In the family, “three words need to be used. I want to repeat this! Three words: ‘Please’, ‘Thank you’, ‘Sorry’. Three essential words!”. Quiero repetirlo! Tres palabras: ‘Por favor’, ‘Gracias’, ‘Perdón’. Tres palabras esenciales!”. “In our families when we are not overbearing and ask: ‘May I?’; in our families when we are not selfish and can say: ‘Thank you!’; and in our families when someone realizes that he or she did something wrong and is able to say ‘Sorry!’, our family experiences peace and joy”. Let us not be stingy about using these words, but keep repeating them, day after day. For “certain silences are oppressive, even at times within families, between husbands and wives, between parents and children, among siblings”. The right words, spoken at the right time, daily protect and nurture love. All this occurs through a process of constant growth. The very special form of love that is marriage is called to embody what Saint Thomas Aquinas said about charity in general. “Charity”, he says, “by its very nature, has no limit to its increase, for it is a participation in that infinite charity which is the Holy Spirit. Nor on the part of the subject can its limit be fixed, because as charity grows, so too does its capacity for an even greater increase”. (# 133-134) Those are words that I can apply to my own family life, and I hope that they are encouraging for your family as well. May our love and charity toward those with whom we share our lives know no bounds. Fr. For more information, please contact Esther, [email protected]. Jubilee Year of Mercy FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER—JUBILEE DAY FOR THE YOUTH This Sunday’s “Youth Jubilee” previews July’s World Youth Day in Krakow. Its theme from Matthew 5:7, “Blessed are the merciful,” echoes Pope Francis’ warning that “the practice of mercy is waning in the wider culture.” In countercultural witness, therefore, “the time has come,” says Francis, “for the Church to take up the joyful call to mercy once more. It is time to return to the basics and to bear the weaknesses and struggles of our brothers and sisters.” Jesus affirms the same in today’s Gospel. “As I have loved you, so you also should love one another” (John 13:34). Francis concludes, “The Church’s very credibility is seen in how she shows merciful and compassionate love.” Jesus too asserts, “This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35). Thus mercy “makes young” the Church, the world, and everyone. “Mercy is the force that reawakens us to new life and instills in us the courage to look to the future with hope” (Misericordiae Vultus, 10). —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J.
