Recruiters from across the country will be available to discuss intern, residency, and pharmacist positions which are available. Students from all campuses are invited to attend this event. P1s, P2s, and P3s are excused from classes to participate in the exhibits from 8-12. P3s are NOT excused from afternoon clerkships. P4s are excused for the entire day. Interviews with recruiters will be held from 1-5pm. Scholarships $2,000 scholarship for Lubbock students interested in geriatrics – Application Deadline August 30th Selection will be based on review of the application that includes a one-page essay describing the student’s interest in geriatrics and his/her intent to practice in geriatrics and/or desire to develop more knowledge related to geriatrics and interdisciplinary practice. Recipients will be working with a cadre of students from Allied Health, Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy and will engage in interdisciplinary projects designed to extend the years of active, healthy life for older adults. Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students For those who missed the application deadline to apply for fall funding through the Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students, please contact Linda Goldstein ([email protected]) Some funds may be available in the spring semester. The information from your application will also help us with our next grant application. TSHP R&E Foundation $1000 SCHOLARSHIP - extended the deadline to Sept 1, 2005 If you are interested in applying or know someone else from the El Paso area, please send them this information. The requirements for this scholarship which is funded by El Paso are: Student must be a native of El Paso must be a member of TSHP/student group. HSF College Scholarship Program Students descended from Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Dominican, Central, South American or other Spanish Cultures who are U.S. Citizen OR legal permanent residents are eligible for the HSF College Scholarship Program. The application deadline for these scholarships (award range $1,000 - $3,000) is October 15th. The scholarships are open to students in all classes and campuses. Requests for travel scholarships must be made IN ADVANCE of travel plans. Priority will be given to those students presenting posters, serving in a state or national office, or competing in state or national competitions. Contact the Office of Professional Affairs for further details. Kappa Psi • • • • Kappa Psi co-sponsored a Bootcamp lunch with Phi Delta Chi on August 8th. Kappa Psi will participate in the school wide Rush meeting for all organizations on Wednesday, August 31st from 5-7 PM in the front lobby. Kappa Psi is co-sponsoring the Back-to-School Picnic with all organizations on Thursday, August 18th from 5-7:30 PM. Kappa Psi received a generous donation from CVS Pharmacy and will be able to supply the soft drinks for the picnic. Kappa Psi would like to thank Bill Carroll and Andy McHam from CVS Pharmacy for the generous donation. Jamie Guyear and Alisia Baker recently attended the 52nd Kappa Psi Grand Council Convention in Pittsburgh, PA. They acted as chapter delegates for electing national officers and voting on new legislation for the fraternity. TT-ASP TT-ASP had their first chapter meeting on August 22. There are a lot of events being planned for the fall and now is the time to get involved. Come find out about Operation Immunization, Operation Diabetes, Heartburn Awareness, American Pharmacists Month, and many other programs. Do you have an idea for a project? Do you want to become more involved? Come and let us know. Even if you don’t get involved, at least come and join… there are lots of membership benefits. Food will be provided. Mary was elected Chair-elect of the Texas Pharmacy Association Academy of Student Pharmacists Executive Committee. This is the highest position a student from our ASP chapter has held and we are very proud of her. APhA-ASP 2005-2006 National President Vibhuti Arya will be visiting our Amarillo campus on Friday, September 9. She will be speaking to the chapter at a special TT-ASP meeting scheduled for 11:30am in Rm 107, which will be healthnet to Dallas and Lubbock. Lunch will be provided for those in attendance in Amarillo. Vibhuti is a student pharmacist from St. John’s University College of Pharmacy. Let’s show this New Yorker what a strong chapter we have here in Texas! Is there an issue in pharmacy that is important to you? If it is important to you, there is a good chance it is important to somebody else. Our ASP chapter will be taking any resolutions proposed by our chapter to the Region 6 Midyear Regional Meeting in Kansas City, MO on October 21-23, 2005. NCPA NCPA would like to welcome back faculty, students and staff for the upcoming school year. Our first meeting of the year is scheduled for Tuesday September 6th at 6:30 pm and all who are interested are invited to attend. Meetings will be the first Tuesday of each month in SOP Room 107 at 6:30 pm telnetted to Dallas and Lubbock. Community Service continued over the summer as NCPA members attended the Race for the Cure in Amarillo and Borger to support cancer research. Members Mindy Sexton and Mary Klein also attended the Annual Legislative Convention in Washington D.C. in May supporting community pharmacists from the local area at the national level. Planning is underway for the Annual NCPA Convention, Trade Expo and Poster Competition in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida from October 15-19th. Students received their white coats and recited the “Oath of a Pharmacist” as their first steps into the profession of pharmacy. The keynote speaker, Bruce Scott, RPh, MS, FASHP shared his thoughts on the meaning of professionalism and the rewards and challenges that face the class over the next 4 years of their lives.
