Cougar News October 2013 Columbia Middle School • 17600 East Columbia Avenue • Aurora, Colorado 80013 Steve Hamilton, Principal Jeffry Hoff, Assistant Principal Lisa Valente, Dean of Students Phone: 303-690-6570 Attendance: 303-326-1651 Fax: 303-326-1251 Principal’s Message Columbia Community, I hope that this letter finds everyone safe and dry. We had an interesting September and I want to recap the events here and provide specific information regarding the planned parent night that had to be cancelled. First, a tremendous thank you for working patiently with us and providing the many excellent suggestions as we coordinated the early release of 750 kids on two different days. We have never had to do this and learned much between early dismissal on Thursday due to weather and early dismissal Monday due to the power outage. I know that there were some frustrations and delays as we did insist that all students picked up at school prior to the dismissals had to be picked up by an adult with a valid photo ID and confirmed against the data base we use. Please know that we will always insist on proper identification and validation in order to ensure the safety of your child. We were able to reconnect all kids within 45 minutes of the dismissal window. Also, parents asked about the orange level lockdown during the Monday dismissal. The lockdown provided a way to keep students in one location during the dismissal period so that we didn’t have to delay their connections with parents. This process was smoother and took three hours less time than how we did this on Thursday. Finally, our automated communication on Monday was much clearer and effective than the district one on Thursday. During Thursday’s rain dismissal we had scheduled a community meeting to review last year’s data, set goals, and discuss concerns on how to best support your children during the school year. I want to share information and then set up some times for us to gather around this information soon. I will break this information down into achievement and school culture. Achievement Data Summary: Once again, Columbia received the Performance rating (highest level) from the state of Colorado for our achievement last year. We went up 5% over the previous year and met all of our achievement targets for math and reading. We have seen three years of consecutive increases. However, in our data this past year we have noticed some specific trends. In the area of writing we received an “approaching” not “meets” for all tested populations except our English Language Learners - ELL (students whose first language is not English). This means we need to focus on improving writing skills and providing writing opportunities. We will also be increasing the challenge, frequency and types of writing for all students this year. Our ELL students are now outperforming every single population at Columbia in every single area (reading, writing and math). They are the first population of students to achieve the state level of “Exceeds” in all areas due to exceptional achievement. Achievement Plan: We have looked closely at this data and our instructional program for our ELL students and have identified some specific differences that we will now be incorporating into all students’ educational programming this year. Our goal will be to exceed the state achievement targets in two years. Further, our math data continues to improve and we will continue to pursue the specialized training of the math team that began last year through the teacher development group. School Culture Data: School culture is directly related to how students are connecting to each other, connecting to the adults at Columbia, and understanding their place in our exceptionally diverse community. Please know our community represents over 80 countries, 19 different languages and has an economic range between the poverty level (57% of students on Free or Reduced Lunch) and lower middle class. Last year’s data on school climate, behavior and participation has shown the following key areas of focus for this school year. Our male students, all races, represent over 75% of all discipline data at Columbia. Our female students, all races, are showing regular academic achievement in the areas of reading, writing and math. Our ELL students (native language isn’t English) are outperforming every student group across both genders at Columbia and have the highest achievement and growth. Approximately 35% of our African American male students are over-represented in disciplinary data compared to their peers and are under-achieving academically. School Culture Plan: We have begun to actively develop mentoring supports for students with an emphasis on males and specifically African American males. We have incorporated both student and staff development components that include guest speakers, increasing building mentors for specific students, partnerships with the Friend’s First organization, developing an intervention support plan for students who have struggled with behavior, and directly teaching student goal setting. However, the evening planned for the first night of the flood on September 12 was intended to set up specific plans to increase community connections, identify adult role models and encourage participation for our students at Columbia. I will need your help in reaching out to the Columbia community to help us develop a culture of collaboration and success for our young men. This is not to say our young ladies won’t be supported; however, our data clearly leads to concerns with male success in academic achievement and development of a positive culture. Please complete and return the survey in this newsletter. We will also send a copy home in the report card envelopes this month when the first quarter ends. I will be holding specific planning sessions with parents during all of our parent conference nights and will set up additional planning sessions together based on your survey feedback. This is critical work and must be done together! PTSO PTSO is an organization meant to bring school and family closer together to achieve common goals like educating our children. Develop a secure environment for every student to achieve at the highest levels. Promote effective communication between the community and the school’s activities. Provide better understanding between, parents, teachers, students, and school staff. Also we are present to subsidize funding through fundraising programs and activities at Columbia Middle School. Interesting information about Parental Involvement and Student Achievement: • • • • • Research shows that parents that are involved with students help them to become successful in school. What better way to stay informed and current about issues going on in your community? You get the opportunity to have your voice heard about concerns you have in your community and schools. Parents that are involved are also responsible for making these events successful. We need your help especially with exciting new ideas to help get our community involved. As parents, students and staff you are already member of Columbia Middle Schools PTSO. All you have to do is come to the meetings and you are all welcome. The meetings are held the first Thursday of each month at 6:00 pm; just come to the office entrance at Columbia Middle School and join in on the FUN. Our next 2 meetings are on October 3 & November 7, 2013. Good Attendance is important! Absences affect both academic performance and the overall success of students. Both excused and unexcused absences are detrimental to the learning process. Class discussions, lab work, interactions with classmates and teachers cannot be replicated by doing make up work. Regular attendance helps our students develop habits that are essential for school and beyond. If your student is absent from school due to illness or an appointment, please be sure to call Columbia’s attendance line at 303-326-1651 to report your student’s absence. This line is open 24 hours and you may leave messages in English or Spanish. Please try to schedule appointments outside of school hours in cases of excessive excused absences, a student may be required by the principal to provide documentation for all future excused absences. In the event of unexcused absences, Columbia follows district truancy procedures. Any student who accumulates 3 or more unexcused absences is considered truant and is flagged as such in our district database. At this time, the truancy process begins. You will receive a letter detailing the absences with an explanation of the truancy process. The student’s attendance will then be closely monitored. If attendance does not improve a meeting will be required at the school to develop an improvement plan. Interventions will become more intense if the student continues to be absent. Any student who misses 4 unexcused absences in a month or 10 unexcused in any school year are considered habitually truant by the state of Colorado and in violation of the state compulsory attendance laws. At this point a truancy petition may be filed with the district court where both students and parents are held responsible for truancy. Attendance is a huge factor in student success in school, quite possibly the most important key to students achieving their educational goals. We, at Columbia, look forward to seeing your children here every day and watching them achieve to their full potential. Please contact any of us in the Student Support Center if you have questions or would like assistance with your student’s attendance. Message from Our Registrar… Due to our recent emergency dismissals, this is a good time to remind families of the importance of keeping the school informed of current phone numbers for themselves and the student’s emergency contacts. At the beginning of the school year, part of the back to school packet included a student verification form to update numbers and emergency contacts. These were entered into the student’s file, but during the emergency dismissals, some families required assistance from a family member or friend not on the list. To make changes for your student, a demographic change form will have to be submitted to the school. These may be obtained at the school or online at www.aps.k12.co.us in the Centralized Admission section. Transportation/Busing Update! News from the ILC Classroom We are pleased to inform parents and students that we now have an activity bus available to take students home Monday – Thursday! If your child wishes to stay after school to work with a teacher and/or participate in an after school activity such as our after school homework club, also known as Overtime, and then ride his/her regularly assigned school bus that leaves Columbia at 5pm, this service is now available to Columbia students every day, except Friday. Our congratulations go out to Dallas Mitchell for winning student of month for the month of September, in Mrs. Sprung’s ILC classroom. Dallas shows excellent pride spirit in the classroom, hallways and cafeteria. Dallas always works very hard, turns in his daily work, and is very excited to do well in school. Dallas LOVES animals, and hopes to one day work at the zoo taking care of animals and continuing to learn about them. Way to go Dallas, you are our wonderful, amazing, animal caretaker!!! Students cannot just hang out after school aimlessly, they must take part in an after school activity under the supervision of an adult in order to take advantage of the activity bus. Boys’ basketball season begins in January and the girls’ season begins in March. It is never too early to schedule your sports physical. Over the years many players have lost valuable practice time because they are waiting for their scheduled physical. You only need one physical per year. It is good for all sports. Be ready to practice on Day #1. Get it done soon! Coach Pope and Coach Epstein Wrestlers Hit the Mats If you’d like to see pure athletic competition, then come watch a wrestling match. Columbia’s wrestlers will be competing against grapplers from other Aurora middle schools all month. Meets are held after school. Columbia hosts wrestling meets on October 9th and November 7th. Columbia has away meets on October 15th at North Middle School, on October 17th at Quest Middle School, on October 23rd at Murphy Creek Middle School, and November 5th at Frontier Middle School. City championships will be held Saturday, November 16th at Rangeview High School. Coach Marshall Coach Epstein Girls Volleyball for 7th & 8th Grade The girls’ volleyball season starts Monday, November 18th. All girls are encouraged and welcome to participate, but must meet and maintain the following qualifications and rules to be a member of the team. 1. Have a current 2013-201 physical exam. (CALL TO SCHEDULE THIS NOW) 2. Have a parent permission slip signed. 3. Have some type of health and hospitalization insurance. (We must have the company name or ID number if military. Please fill this out on the parent permission form). Insurance may be purchased through the main office. Forms can be found in the office. 4. Return two Aurora Public School forms, ‘Rules of Conduct’ & ‘Hazing’ sheets signed by herself and her parents. 5. Pay a $33.00 athletic fee. 6. Return a ‘Team’ Letter signed by herself and her parents. Coaches are Brian Black (8th) & Ed Scalf (7th). Good Job Lady Cougarfish! Congratulations at the City Championships, Lady Cougarfish!! You all did a fantastic job! I am VERY proud of your accomplishments this season. The improvements since the first day have been astounding as there was an average of 30 best times per meet as well as 43 best times in the City meet. As a result of this need, winter coats will be distributed on a first come basis on Saturday October 26th from 9 AM to noon at Columbia Middle School. Our objective is to have a successful 1st annual coat drive, and in order to make this happen, we are asking that you, as parents, bring in any new or gently used children’s coats that you would like to donate for the coat drive. We will need coats for children in elementary through middle school. Bins will be set-up September 30th through October 21st to drop off your children’s coats. We ask that you have them to the school no later than October 21st, allowing time to organize and prepare the coats for distribution, on Saturday October 26th at Columbia Middle School. We thank you in advance for your generosity in helping make this a successful community event.
