Larry Pichard, Pastor Visiones del Párroco, Pbro. Larry Pichard This week the Blessed Virgin Mary is very much on our minds. Tuesday, December 8, is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, a holy day of obligation. We remember how Mary was conceived in the womb of her mother without any stain of original sin—therefore, immaculate or clean—so that one day she could be the very worthy vessel for her son, the Son of God. Masses will be in English at 6:30 a.m. in the Chapel; 8:30 a.m., 12:15 p.m. and 6:00 pm. in the Church. The 7:30 p.m. Mass will be in Spanish in the Church. Also, we are in the midst of a novena in honor of Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe. On Monday and Wednesday of this week the 6:30 p.m. Masses will be moved back to 7:00 p.m., and those Masses will be bilingual—English and Spanish. Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday will also move the 6:30 p.m. Mass back to 7:00 p.m. and those Masses will be in Spanish. Saturday, December 12, is the grand Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The day starts at 5:00 a.m. with Mañanitas, a serenade to Mary accompanied by Mariachi and followed by breakfast. Mass in English at 8:30 a.m. will be celebrated in the Chapel. Then, for those who want to walk a procession from Toyota Park with bilingual Rosary can arrive at the Church by 3:30 p.m., leave the car here and be bussed to Toyota Park. When the procession arrives here by 6:00 p.m., a play in the Great Hall in Spanish will reenact the Apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe to Juan Diego and Bishop Zumarraga. Then we process to the Church and celebrate a bilingual Mass in Mary’s honor. All are welcome to participate in remembering this amazing, miraculous apparition of Mary in Mexico in 1531, a rich blessing for the Americas! Next weekend our special collection will be for the Retirement Fund for the Religious—priests who belong to religious congregations like the Franciscans, Jesuits, Dominicans… And the Fund also supports the retirements of brothers and nuns who belong to religious congregations. For years they took care of us, and now it’s our turn to take care of them in their golden years. Posada is Spanish for "lodging", or "accommodation"; it is said in plural because it is celebrated more than one day throughout the celebration. It is usually performed by one group of family/friends representing Mary and Joseph and the other group representing the Mesoneros (innkeepers). Another special tradition is called La Pastorela, a theatrical representation hosted amongst family, friends, parishes, all across Latin America to reflect on Mary and Joseph’s journey to the place the world would receive the miracle of Jesus' birth (the Nativity scene) celebrated in Hispanic Folklore. The Hispanic Ministry invite you to join us this special celebration on December 14 at 7:00 pm in the Parish Center. We will sing bilingual Christmas carols and will have piñatas for the kids.
