Preface Dutch Dress Up is an exhibition about accessories, unusual designs of Dutch origin. Keywords: down-to-earthness, humour, intelligence, meaning. Dutch designers rank among the world top. They work self employed or for big labels (Alexander van Slobbe for Puma) or for colleagues (Fredie Stevens for Victor & Rolf), give workshops worldwide (Iris Eichenberg, Ruudt Peters) and supply big movie productions (Claudy Jongstra for Star Wars Episode 1). They are inspired by their own or other peoples history, traditions and rituals and by the visual arts. They recently rediscovered old trades and crafts, combining those with innovative techniques. Para ellos tampoco ya no son But why make an exhibition about accessories? Because from time immemorial people have adorned, decorated and dressed their body. The question is why man ever started to add something to his natural state. On practical grounds surely. As protections against the elements, or to impress the opposite sex and thus ensure the survival of the species. But most of all, man can use it to distinguish himself. Through the ages clothing and accessories were means of identification and expression. Tiger tooth, crinoline of blue jeans, they all are signs that reveal something about the wearer, about his or her status and style, mentality, character, culture. But they also testify about the social and cultural changes. In the 1960’s interpretations as well as the appearance of the visual arts change fundamentally. In America a young generation of artists strike a totally new direction. Knocking down ivory towers. In The Netherlands too painters and sculptors are looking for a new direction, for new means of expression. A different kind of art comes into being, more vital, more focussed on society. This change does not go by unnoticed by the practitioners of the applied arts. They also are no longer satisfied with the traditional artistic and material means of expression. More and more the suficientes los medios de expresión artísticos y materiales tradicionales. La escena callejera y de la moda nunca antes fue tan concept, the idea behind the design replaces the traditional notions of value and status. Clothes, jewellery, accessories are as it were being redefined. Especially in jewellery this changing mentality is manifest. And in this The Netherlands is trendsetter, worldwide. New, unconventional materials are introduced, aluminium collars, bracelets made of shower hose or PVC, stainless steel rings. Expressive qualities become more important than functionality, wearable becomes an elastic notion. ‘Sculpture to wear’ is a much heard expression. In the 70’s accessories are, under influence of pop art and punk, getting more playful, more expressive, more colourful. In jewellery, paper and textile make their appearance as material. In the 80’s, the ‘i-memyself’ era, social engagement is replaced by personal stories, emotions and dreams. By now we have arrived in a much more varied world. Were we, in the past, prevented by the dictatorship of the ruling fashion to develop a personal style, nowadays we are very free to choose. Street and fashion scenes were never before so divers. Clothes and accessories are still a means of expression, but used with a different mentality. We can play with our identity, choose a role that suits us, distinguish us, or blend in with the crowd. For the designers too, the possibilities are almost variada. They can choose from an abundance of materials and techniques. The boundaries between the various disciplines and between the visual and applied art are fading away. This is also evident in this exhibition. You only have to look at the gloves of Sylvia B. or the scarf of Simone Eerdenburg, they are works of art as well as accessories. And the pieces of jewellery of Iris Eichenberg are wearable autonomous objects. There is a lot to see and enjoy. I wish you much viewing pleasure!
