Dear Parishioners - Catedral de Cristo Rey
April 8, 2012 The resurrection of the lord Dear Parishioners, It is with a joyful Alleluia that I welcome you this Easter Day! I take this opportunity to welcome not only our regular parishioners, but those who may be visiting from another city or another parish. We gather today to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Over the last several weeks, we have faced the solemnity of Lent. We have watched the events of Holy Week unfold, beginning with Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem to his merciless death, suffered for our sins. 2699 Peachtree Road, NE Atlanta, Georgia 30305 404-233-2145 www.cathedralofchristtheking.org WHAT’S INSIDE: Around the Parish Page 2 Marrieds Ministry Page 3 Then, as the early morning sun rises on Easter Day, the great miracle of Jesus’ resurrection rekindles our hope and gives us joy. That is really what Easter is all about: Hope. Hope of a better day and an even better tomorrow. Like Jesus, we may begin a new life starting today, to leave sin behind. We, too, may be “resurrected”. I wish you and your family a blessed Easter, and may the glory of the Lord’s miracle strengthen your faith and renew your hope, and may that faith and hope bring you a new power and purpose. Praise be to God! God Bless You, Life Teen Page 4 CKS News Page 5 Rite of Reception Page 6 Around the Archdiocese Page 7 Stewardship Page 8 Hispanic Pages Pages 10-11 Fr. If not, you have yet to see our newly refurbished stained glass window that now stands to the right of the entrance doors. This window was created to commemorate the creation of The Diocese of Atlanta. Established in 1956 when the northern 71 counties of Georgia were separated from the Diocese of Savannah, the Diocese was dedicated to the dual Patronage of Saint Pius X and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and was placed in the care of the Diocese’s first Bishop, Francis E. Hyland. In the uppermost image, we find the coat of arms of patron Pope Pius X, whose papacy was from 19031914, and whose canonization occurred shortly before the establishment of the Diocese of Atlanta. A beautiful rendition of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, patroness of the Diocese, is the center image of the window. Pierced by the sword of suffering and draped in a regal garland of red roses, the Immaculate Heart is on fire with love for the Father and the Son. Springing from the heart is a sprig of Annunciation lilies, calling to mind the purity of Mary, and her graceful acceptance of God's will. Below the symbols of the dual patrons, we find the coat of arms of Bishop Francis E. Hyland, Atlanta's Bishop from 1956-1961. The left side of his shield shows the newly created coat of arms of the Diocese. The right side of the shield bears Bishop Hyland's personal arms. Beneath all, the scroll reads, "Ad Jesum Per Mariam," or "To Jesus through Mary." Originally located in the choir-loft stairwell at the southeast end of the narthex, the window was removed when the Parish Center was built in 2000. After several years in storage, it reappears in time to celebrate the Cathedral's 75th anniversary in 2012-2013. Due to the holiday publishing dates, offertory information was not available at the time of printing. APRIL 8, 2012 We Welcome New Parishioners Ms. Caroline Corrigan Mr. Christopher Kapur Mr. Eduardo Martin Ms. Mary Brooks Renfro Ms. Veronica Tabi Mr. and Mrs. James Williams Ms. Kate Zimmer Stewardship of Treasure How shall I repay the Lord for his goodness to me?” Psalm 116 According to the Gospel, Mary of Magdala arrived at the empty tomb first. Prompted by Mary, Peter and John arrived next and viewed the burial wrappings. Scripture tells us of St. John, “ . . . He saw and believed.” This is the same John, the beloved disciple, positioned at Jesus’ side at the Last Supper, who stood at the foot of the cross, and, according to the Gospel, was one of the first to believe in the risen Christ. Like John, may the gift of Easter grace strengthen our faith and deepen our discipleship in the Lord so that we may proclaim, “Christ is risen, Alleluia!” Seminarian Collection This Weekend Our second collection today is for the seminarians of the Archdiocese of Atlanta. We have been blessed with many vocations to the priesthood and your prayers and generous gifts today support over 30 men who are now preparing for future priestly service in north Georgia. For your convenience, electronic giving is available at www.cathedralofchristtheking.org. 3 Blessings to all who remembered a friend or a loved one by donating to the Easter Flowers Decorations In Honor Of: Given By: William Abdella Helen Agli All Cathedral Choirs and Ensembles Thalia Assaf Ms. Bala Carolyn Benvenuti and Michael Murray Oliver Bickerstaff The Brady Family of Corry, PA The Bruni Family The Buckshaw Family of Corry, PA Nana and Papa Cavalier Marie Corrigan Sra. United States Conference of Catholic Bishops 3211 FOURTH STREET NE WASHINGTON DC 20017-1194 202-541-3103 FAX 202-541-3166 BULLETIN INSERT Sweeping HHS Mandate Stands, Violating Conscience Rights and Religious Liberty Congress Must Act to Fix the Problem On January 20, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) reaffirmed a rule that virtually all private health care plans must cover sterilization, abortifacients, and contraception. The exemption provided for "religious employers" was so narrow that it failed to cover the vast majority of faith-based organizations—including Catholic hospitals, universities, and charities—that help millions every year. Ironically, not even Jesus and his disciples would have qualified for the exemption, because it excludes those who mainly serve people of another faith. On February 10, the Obama Administration made this rule final “without change”; delayed enforcement for a year against religious nonprofits that were still not exempted (our charities, hospitals, and colleges); and promised to develop more regulations to “accommodate” them by the end of that additional year. But, as explained below, that promised “accommodation” still forces them to pay for “services” that violate their religious convictions. The original rule that violated our religious liberty so severely has not been changed, but finalized. After touting meaningful changes in the mandate, HHS instead finalized the original rule that was first issued in August 2011 “without change.” So the offensive definition of “religious employer”—which excludes our charities, hospitals, and colleges because they serve people of other faiths—is still in place, and those institutions are still subject to the mandate. HHS has promised some kind of “accommodation,” but only after the election. HHS said it would take an additional year to develop more regulations to “accommodate” religiously-affiliated charities, schools, and hospitals that still fall outside the “religious employer” exemption. The impact of these additional rules will not be felt until after the election, the only point of public accountability for the Executive Branch. This eliminates an important incentive for HHS to provide the best protection for religious liberty The promised “accommodation”—even at its best—would still force our institutions to violate their beliefs. Under the proposed “accommodation,” if an employee of these religious institutions wants coverage of contraception or sterilization directly from the insurer, the objecting employer is still forced to pay for it as a part of the employer’s insurance plan. Since there is no other source, the funds to pay for that coverage must come from the premiums of the employer and fellow employees, even those who object in conscience. There is no exemption for objecting insurers, secular employers, for-profit religious employers, or individuals. The U.S. bishops defend religious liberty for all, and so have repeatedly identified all the stakeholders in the process whose religious freedom is threatened by the mandate—all employers, insurers, and individuals, not just religious employers. Now, all insurers, including self-insurers, must provide the coverage to any employee who wants it. In turn, all individuals who pay premiums have no escape from subsidizing that coverage. And only employers that are both non-profit and religious may qualify for the limited “accommodation.” We urgently need legislation to correct the mandate’s threats to religious liberty and conscience rights. The Respect for Rights of Conscience Act has been introduced in Congress (H.R. 1179, S. 1467) to ensure that those who participate in the market for health insurance “retain the right to provide, purchase, or enroll in health coverage that is consistent with their religious beliefs and moral convictions.” ACTION: Contact your U.S. Representative by e-mail, phone, or FAX letter: Call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at: 202-224-3121, or call your Members’ local offices. Send your email to Congress through www.usccb.org/conscience. Additional contact info can be found on Members’ web sites at: www.house.gov and www.senate.gov. MESSAGE: “Please co-sponsor and support the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act (H.R. 1179, S. 1467). The Obama administration’s decision to mandate coverage of sterilization and contraceptives, including drugs that can cause an abortion, makes passage of this measure especially urgent. Please ensure that the religious liberty and conscience rights of all participants in our nation’s health care system are respected.” WHEN: Now is the time to build co-sponsors and support. Please act today! Thanks! ¡Aleluya!”
