FIVA OLDTIMER STUDY 2014 A quantitative study focusing on owners of historic vehicles in 15 countries Amber Scholtz Ewout Witte August 2014 34405 © GfK 2014 | FIVA Oldtimer Study 2014 | August 2014 1 Contents © GfK 2014 | FIVA Oldtimer Study 2014 | August 2014 2 1. Introduction © GfK 2014 | FIVA Oldtimer Study 2014 | August 2014 3 Introduction (1) The Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens (FIVA) approached GfK for a European study in 15 countries, focusing on owners of historical vehicles. Definition A historical vehicle is defined as a motor vehicle which is at least 30 years old. A youngtimer is defined as a motor vehicle which is between 30 and 25 years old. It can be a car, motorcycle, moped, scooter, camper van, commercial vehicle, military vehicle, bus, tractor, truck or other self-propelled vehicle for road use FIVA is a worldwide organization which is dedicated to preserve, protect and promote historic vehicles and the related culture. This study will give FIVA a valuable update of the ownership of historical vehicles of the year 2013 with a focus on: - Portrayal of the vehicles owned; - Usage of the vehicles and related expenses; - Portrayal of the owners including activities done. © GfK 2014 | FIVA Oldtimer Study 2014 | August 2014 4 Introduction (2) In this report the results of the study are graphically presented per country. Since the set up in each country was equal, results can be compared. Results are shown for historic vehicles (built before 1984) and youngtimers (built between 1984-1989). In some cases the base is low and results should be interpreted carefully. - A base below 30 is flagged and placed in a shadow. Results should be interpreted as indicative. - A base lower than 50 is flagged, results can be interpreted but should be generalized carefully. © GfK 2014 | FIVA Oldtimer Study 2014 | August 2014 5 2. For each country is the amount of historic vehicles approximately 2. A difference is noticed in Czech Republic. In this country almost 5 historic vehicles are owned per person on average. The two types of historic vehicles that are owned most often are passenger cars and motorcycles. Especially in Czech Republic people own a motorcycle relatively often (almost one per person). © GfK 2014 | FIVA Oldtimer Study 2014 | August 2014 8 Historic vehicle ownership Passenger car Overview passenger cars Parking Private garage Private, not under roof € 21.043 1966 1% 1% 2.484 km 18% Rented garage 4% Public road 76% Other 96 % In a roadworthy condition 13 years Have a petrol engine 81 % owned since 2000 © GfK 2014 | FIVA Oldtimer Study 2014 | August 2014 First year of production or registration Most common make Average market value Average driven km in 2013 Passenger cars are most often owned by owners of historic vehicles: 1,69 per person. In Luxembourg are the most passenger cars owned, namely 2,03 per owner. On average historic passenger cars are produced or first registered in 1966. In Czech Republic more older cars are owned (1960 on average), while in Poland the cars are a bit newer (1972). In every country about one out of five cars is not in a roadworthy condition. In Poland and Sweden more cars are not roadworthy; one out of four in Poland and almost one out of three in Sweden. Most of the cars are parked in a private garage. In Austria and Germany it is more common to park in a rented garage. 9 Historic vehicle ownership Motorcycle Overview motorcycles Parking Private garage Private, not under roof 2% 1% €5.659 1963 1.137km 9% Rented garage Public road 88% Other 99 % In a roadworthy condition 17 years Have a petrol engine 78 % owned since 1996 © GfK 2014 | FIVA Oldtimer Study 2014 | August 2014 First year of production or registration Most common make Average market value Average driven km in 2013 Motorcycles are often produced or first registered a few years earlier than cars: 1963 on average. Again, in Czech Republic the average age of motorcycles is even older. BMW and Honda are by far the most owned brands. The market value is a quarter of the market value of passenger cars. On average the market value of a motorcycle is 5.659 Euros. Same as for passenger cars, about 4 out of 5 motorcycles are in a roadworthy condition. Motorcycles are owned for a longer time than passenger cars (17 years vs. 13 years). Owners of a motorcycle are more carefully when parking their vehicle; almost 90% park their motorcycle in a private roofed garage. 10 Historic vehicle ownership Other vehicles Parking Overview other vehicles Private garage 1% 2% Private, not under roof Rented garage Public road 12% 78% First year of production or registration In a roadworthy condition 15 years 1.297km 7% Other 74 % € 6.126 1964 Have a petrol engine 23% have diesel 78 % Most common make Average market value Average driven km in 2013 The other vehicles include a variety of vehicles; moped, scooter, tractor, commercial vehicle, military vehicle, camper van, racing car, bus or other self-propelled vehicle. Restoration costs are the most expensive. These costs differ within Europe from € 1.188,- in Italy till € 4.207,- in Luxembourg. Maintenance and repairs are mostly done by the owners themselves. Especially in Denmark, Sweden and Czech Republic it is rare to hire a professional. The annual road taxes vary strongly within Europe. The least is paid in Sweden and Czech Republic (about € 50,-) and the most is paid in Austria; ten times as much as in Sweden and Czech Republic. 14 Youngtimers ownership Passenger car Amount of youngtimers owned on average Youngtimers owned 0,4 Passenger cars 1,03 Motorcycles 0,13 Youngtimers are less owned than historic vehicles. Like the historic vehicles, passenger cars are most often owned, secondly motorcycles. 86 % In a roadworthy condition The market value for youngtimer cars and motorcycles is lower compared to historic cars and historic motorcycles. The market value of the other vehicles doesn’t show difference between the historic vehicles and youngtimers. There is a difference in amount of km driven in 2013 for cars and other vehicles historic vs. youngtimer. Owners of youngtimer cars and youngtimer other vehicles drove more than double the amount of km with their vehicle, than owners of historic cars and historic other vehicles. For motorcycles was no big difference. A diesel engine is more common for youngtimer cars and other youngtimer vehicles; one out of ten for cars, and almost four out of ten for other vehicles. Probably because of the age, all the youngtimers are more often in a roadworthy condition than the historic vehicles.
