FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT
GIVE ME JUSTICE, O GOD, AND PLEAD MY CAUSE AGAINST A
NATION THAT IS FAITHLESS. FROM THE DECEITFUL AND CUNNING
RESCUE ME, FOR YOU, O GOD, ARE MY STRENGTH.
PALM43:1-2
To the exiles in Babylon, Isaiah foretells a new exodus (1), when the Lord will
lead his people from captivity to freedom (Ps). True freedom is rooted in the
person of Jesus, not in observance of the Law (2). It is he who challenges us
to examine our own hearts before self-righteously judging other(3).
FIRST READING — ISAIAH 43:16-21
See, I am doing something new!
RESPONSORIAL PSALM — PSALM 126
The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy.
SECOND READING — PHILIPPIANS 3:8-14
I have been taken possession of by Christ Jesus.
GOSPEL — JOHN 8:1-11
Go, and from now on do not sin any more.
PLEASE
PRAY for the repose of the soul Patricia McGuire, who passed into
eternal life on March 7, 2013.
PLEASE
PRAY for the repose of the soul of Joseph Ziegler, who passed into
eternal life on March 9, 2013. Joseph is the husband of Ann Marie Ziegler
and father of Kathleen Ziegler and Michael Ziegler.
T REASURE
S
T
FROM OUR RADITIONS
Next weekend, many churches provide palms to be carried in the opening
moments of the liturgy, as we gratefully recall Jesus’ entry into the holy city of
Jerusalem. The children who greeted him on that day used what was both
handy and traditional, since palms were carried to inaugurate the joyful harvest
feast of Succoth. To this day, faithful Jews are directed to take a beautiful palm
branch, green and straight as possible, called a lulav, and bind it with three
myrtle branches fifteen inches long, and two longer willow branches. At the end
of the temple service, everyone carries the lulav, circling the sanctuary in a
dance called the Hoshanot, singing hymns of joy.
In other climates, Jews and Christians alike have had to make accommodations over the years. In Italy, everyone carries olive branches today, often
brought from their own garden. In England, forsythia branches are preferred, a
relative of the olive, sign of peace. Germans prefer pussywillows, and others
look for flowering spring branches. In our part of the world, what do you think
would be the best choice to express joy and welcome, and to remind us of the
joy of Christ’s victory even as we prepare to commemorate his passion?
James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
BY YOUR HELP, WE BESEECH YOU, LORD OUR GOD, may
we walk eagerly in that same charity with which, out of love for the world,
your Son handed himself over to death. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your
Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God,
for ever and ever.
Amen.
FORGIVEN
Today’s liturgy continues the
message of forgiveness and reconciliation that we heard last week. The
Church seems to be doing its utmost
to deliver one simple message: “Your
sins are forgiven!” What good news
this is!
Isaiah declares that God’s saving
action on our behalf is not something
trapped in the past, but here and
now. Paul urges us to recognize that
true life is not “won” by following
laws, however strictly, but is a free gift
of God. Thus, our focus must be on
the future, not on past misdeeds. Our
eyes must be on the prize of life forever with God.
In the Gospel, Jesus is challenged to demonstrate that he is a
law-keeper, but he knows that this is
a trap. If he counsels mercy, he will
be declared an opponent of the law.
If he follows the law and condones
its punishment, he will be denounced
as an inciter to murder. Jesus decides to do neither. Instead, he turns
the tables and invites the crowd to
forgo “legality” for the sake of forgiveness and reconciliation.

CRS RICE BOWL-Fifth Week of Lent
Drinking Clean Water
in Pakistan
This week we focus our prayers, fasting and
almsgiving on Pakistan, where
poor communities often do not have access
to clean water. CRS helps communities
build water pumps so they can have clean
water nearby for use at home and on their
farms.
Read in your Lenten Calendar about Ismael who lives in a
small village where the nearest water was more than one mile
away, a big hardship on his family of eleven. CRS helped
build a water pump right in the village and Ismael and his
neighbors worked together to install the water system.
This week, think about the role that water plays in your life.
Consider fasting from all beverages except water and give the
money you save to your CRS Rice Bowl.
ROSARIES NEEDED
Do you have extra rosaries? The Legion of Mary
would love to share your extras with folks who
would like to pray the rosary and need one!
Please put them in the basket on the desk in the
entryway. They are appreciated.
ATTENTION:
ALL LEGION OF MARY MEMBERS
We will renew our Promise to Our Lady on Saturday,
March 23, at 12:30 p.m. in the Chapel Center. Potluck to follow. Please join us!
PARISH COUNCIL ELECTIONS
The Parish Council elects 2-3 new members each year for
three year terms. We are nearing the time for our next election
and need to elect two new council members. We say “thank
you” with much heartfelt gratitude to the members whose
terms are expiring: Chair, Mark Elser, and Adam Parisi.
Nominations will be accepted through Sunday, March 24.
Please pass your nominations on to Don Brown ASAP at
[email protected] or 479-871-0376 or Lydia at
[email protected] or 442-0890 x202. Your help will be
greatly appreciated.
All registered parishioners, 18 years of age or older, practicing their faith and in good standing are eligible for nomination. The term of office is three years and meetings are the
fourth Tuesday monthly. The Council uses prayer, discussion,
and recommendations to assist Fr. John in making and carrying out decisions regarding all aspects of parish life and the
mission of the Church. Elections will take place on the weekend of May 11-12.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT
CINCO DOMINGO DE CUARESMA
NEW MONDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY
7 Weeks to REDISCOVERING CATHOLICISM
What’s Happening
Have you heard about our online collaboration with
other schools across the country using the book, On
the Same Day in March, by Marilyn Singer? Our third
graders are comparing weather, sharing stories, and
finding out about each other. We have compared the
weather on March 1 which came in like a lion here in
Fayetteville. The next day to compare is March 20.
Since we will be on Spring Break, we realized it would
be an opportunity to compare on a larger scale. Some
of our students plan to travel over Spring Break, so we
will put all of those locations in the comparison! It will
be fun to compare these temperatures on March 20 to
the temperature here in Fayetteville. Look for pictures
on the website!
Registration
Have you considered a Catholic education for your
PreK 3 through 7th grade children? St. Joseph offers all
the academic subjects that public school students
have, as well as phys. ed., music, technology, art, library and Spanish. Middle school students also have
Latin! What is most important is that they also have
religion as part of the regular curriculum. Students
have Mass two days a week, morning prayer all together three days a week, religion instruction, and
morals and values reinforced throughout the curriculum. Registration is now open to the public. If you have
a PreK child, a Kindergartener not currently in our PreK
program, or you are looking to register your children
who are currently in other schools in the area, please
give us a call at 442-4554 to schedule a tour and
have questions answered. We look forward to hearing
from you!

THE M&M AUGUSTINE FOUNDATION will host
the 20th Annual Easter Feed on Saturday, March
30, at Central United Methodist Church
(CUMC). The event is for the elderly, needy,
lonely, unemployed and anyone who wants to
share a meal in fellowship.
For 19 years we have, in conjunction with our fellow parishioners
of St. Joseph and others in the community, provided a meal consisting of turkey, ham, dressing, cranberry sauce, green beans,
corn, mashed potatoes, desserts and beverages. We also plan to
give away 200 Easter baskets to needy children.
IT IS NO ACCIDENT that this event is held on the Saturday
before Easter; this is our way of simply giving thanks to God
for sending his Son to redeem us. As we have in the past, we
look to the people of St. Joseph's for help with this endeavor.
VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED to cook turkeys and hams that
are supplied to you. We also need people to bake desserts:
cakes, cookies and pies. Your help would be greatly appreciated. If you are willing to help or would like more information, please contact Don Brown at 479-871-0376, Susan
Springer at 445-6514, or Beverly Augustine at 750-3333.
The M&N Augustine Foundation is a non-bureaucratic, results
-oriented, all volunteer organization.
Our St. Joseph Church Easter Egg
Hunt will start at 10:15 a.m. on Easter
morning. We need lots of candies and
plastic eggs for the hunt. The M&N
Augustine Foundation Easter Feed will
be Saturday, March 30. St. Joseph
plans to provide 200 baskets for children at the Feed. The baskets are also
filled from this collection, too.
HOLY FAMILY MISSION
JOIN US FOR A CELEBRATION OF SAINT JOSEPH’S TABLE

(Rom 7, 24). Con él también
podemos responder: «¡Gracias sean dadas a Dios por
Jesucristo nuestro Señor!» (Rom 7, 24).
¡Has pasado el día
haciendo el mal, mañana cambia de conducta! Este es el
sentido de las palabras que Jesús dirige a esta mujer: “Yo
tampoco te condenaré, pero, libre del pasado, ten cuidado en el futuro. Yo tampoco te condenaré, he borrado tu
culpa. ¡Observa lo que mando para recibir lo que prometo!”»
TE INVITAMOS A ACERCARTE AL SACRAMENTO DE LA
PENITENCIA TODOS LOS JUEVES A LAS 6 P.M.
