On Sunday, December 7th the Virgin
of Caacupé DevoƟonal Group celebrated a special Mass followed by a
procession to the Cafeteria. Parishioners enjoyed delicious food that
was prepared by the Virgin of Caacupé DevoƟonal Group. The devoƟonal group meets the second Sunday of
every month.

Giving Tree
Today, you will be able to select a Christmas ornament
from the Giving Tree to purchase a gi for
someone in need. Please feel free to take a tag
from the Giving Tree and return your wrapped
gi with the tag as a label and place it under
the tree no later than Sunday, December 21st.

Children planning to par cipate must a end the prac ce
on Saturday, December 20th from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm
in the Main Church, as well as the Dress Rehearsal at
4:00 pm on December 24th prior to the 5:30 pm Christmas Eve Family Mass. Sign-up sheets will be distributed

Advent ReconciliaƟon Monday,
December 15th
During Advent we will hear John the Bap st call
us to “Prepare the Way of the Lord.” The best
way for us to prepare the Way of the Lord and
prepare for Christmas is to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconcilia on. Monday, December
15th, is Advent Reconcilia on Monday throughout the
Archdiocese of New York. All parishes will be providing
the Sacrament of Reconcilia on for the faithful from
4:00pm to 8:00pm. Confessions will be heard at the
Church of St. Bernard on Monday, December 15th from
4:00pm to 8:00pm, in place of our Annual Advent Penance Service.
Christmas Novena/Posadas by the DevoƟonal Groups & Cursillistas
All the Devo onal Groups and the Cursillistas of the
Church of St. Bernard invite everyone to the Christmas
Novena from Monday, December 15 to Tuesday, December 23 at 7:30 pm in the Chapel Hall. We hope to share
with you the manger (on some days we
will have the Girl Scouts and some of
our youth represen ng the Virgin Mary
and Joseph). We will also have Christmas music, refreshments and more.

The St. Bernard’s Crea ve Cra Group will meet on Friday, December 19th, from 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m. in the

Lunes de la Reconciliación de Adviento,
15 de Diciembre
Durante el Adviento escuchamos a Juan el Bau sta hacernos una llamada a “preparar el camino del Señor.” La mejor
manera de preparar el camino del Señor y prepararnos para la navidad es recibiendo el Sacramento de la Reconciliación. El lunes 15 de diciembre es el lunes de la Reconciliación de Adviento en toda la Arquidiócesis de Nueva York.
Todas las parroquias estarán ofreciendo el Sacramento de
la Reconciliación a todos los fieles de 4:00pm a 8:00pm. En
la Iglesia de San Bernardo tendremos confesiones el lunes
15 de diciembre de 4:00pm a 8:00pm en lugar de nuestro
servicio anual de Penitencia de Adviento.

Todos los Grupos Devocionales y los Cursillistas de la

THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT
Make yourself a prophet
As Christians, we have a long biblical history of God speaking through prophets such as Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel. Although divinely inspired, the
prophets faced a tough job. Often they begged, encouraged, cajoled, harangued, and otherwise urged the people to turn away from anything that
separated them from God and one another. They beseeched the people to
return to God and make right a society suffering from misuse of power, injustice, and indifference. The prophets remind us that God is always present,
reaching out with love. How will you accept God’s love today and share it
with others?
TODAY’S READINGS: Isaiah 61:1-2a, 10-11; 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24;
John 1:6-8, 19-28 (8). “…[the Lord] has sent me to bring glad
tidings.”
MONDAY, DECEMBER 15
ADVENT WEEKDAY
Patience, people
After some weeks of Advent, you may find yourself struggling to maintain
the mood of waiting and expectation when all the world is already at the
height of celebrating a winter holiday. We need such secular celebrations
(even under the title of Christmas!) to deepen the bonds of friendship and
generosity. However, the Christian also needs a strong spirit of stillness to
tell the difference between these celebrations and the quiet, gentle, purple
time of longing. Otherwise, when Christmas arrives all you’ll have left to
offer is fatigue—not much of a joyous welcome for Christ.
TODAY’S READINGS: Numbers 24:2-7, 15-17a; Matthew 21:23-27 (187).

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 16
ADVENT WEEKDAY
Seek stillness
Every country has its unique Christmas traditions, but the Philippines beats
them all in terms of the length of its Christmas season, which starts as early
as September and lasts into January. The official church observance in the
Philippines begins today with nine days of devotion called Simbang Gabi
(Filipino for “Night Mass”). Mass is held before sunrise, originally to accommodate farmers who are busy with the harvest this time of year. During the
hectic pace of the holidays, try to carve out peaceful moments of quiet to
reflect on the meaning of the season.

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 17
ADVENT WEEKDAY: O WISDOM (O SAPIENTIA)
The excitement grows
Wonderful events can leave us breathless beyond an exclamation of delight: Oh! Similarly, wonder in the divine Presence influences us in prayer: O Lord. As early as the sixth
century, the Great O Antiphons of Advent have been chanted
in the church to express growing excitement during the last
seven
days of Advent. The title of each antiphon begins with the interjection “O”
followed by a name mentioned in scripture as an attribute for Christ. They
were formed into a song in the 12th century, “Veni, Veni Emmanuel,” and
translated 700 years later as “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.” We pray today:
O Wisdom, ancient and new, help your church to combine tradition with new
understanding.
TODAY’S READINGS: Genesis 49:2, 8-10; Matthew 1:1-17 (193).

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 18
ADVENT WEEKDAY: O SACRED LORD (O ADONAI)
Our God saves us
The title seems old-fashioned. “Lord” comes from an era in which one man
was master/protector over a household, village, or territory. The Most High is
viewed as this kind of Lord with the universe as his household. God is recognized as Lord in the act of liberating captives from Egyptian slavery and
Babylonian exile. Jesus earns this title when he’s revealed as truly his Father’s Son: liberator of a world enslaved to sin. We pray today: O Sacred
Lord, free us from every attitude or behavior that limits our love.
TODAY’S READINGS: Jeremiah 23:5-8; Matthew 1:18-25 (194). “In his
days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety.”
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 19
ADVENT WEEKDAY: O ROOT OF JESSE (O RADIX JESSE)
Stories are a staircase
Every generation has its stories, and these stories take us up to newly inspired heights, or below to never-before-imagined depths. Our sacred story
brims with surprising births from women too old, inexperienced, barren, or
unlikely to conceive. Yet the babies keep coming, because the God of Life
wills it and the mothers say yes. In these stories, younger sons upstage
older ones, losers win, and a shepherd boy becomes a king. We pray today: O
Root of Jesse, find within our present-day stories the seed of amazing new
life.
TODAY’S READINGS: Judges 13:2-7, 24-25a; Luke 1:5-25 (195).

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 20
ADVENT WEEKDAY: O KEY OF DAVID (O CLAVIS DAVIDICA)
We have the power
The world is full of sighing people, disappointed in efforts that seem to
amount to nothing. “If only we had more money, control, say in what happens!” Maybe the “juice” isn’t what’s lacking. Maybe it’s faith. God invites us
to participate in the authority of the universe: the power to forgive sin. Forgiveness is the big key that unlocks every door. But too often it sits there,
under-utilized. We pray today: O Key of David, give us courage to give and
receive the forgiveness you have gained for us.
TODAY’S READINGS: Isaiah 7:10-14; Luke 1:26-38 (196). “The Holy
Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will
overshadow you.”

ENGLISH CLASSES AT EL CENTRO HISPANO
SPONSORED BY BOCES
Once again BOCES will be offering English as a Second Language Classes
and GED classes in Spanish at El Centro Hispano Technology Center from
January to March 2015. English Classes are offered Monday – Friday
from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
GED classes are offered from 12 noon to 3:00 p.m. Registration fee: $25
(Only Money Order accepted). To register come to El Centro Hispano from
9 a.m.-12:00 p.m. on January 8th, 2015.
COMPUTER CLASSES FOR ADULTS AT
EL CENTRO HISPANO
EL Centro Hispano will be offering a new cycle of Beginners Computer
Classes starting in January. The course will last 16 weeks and the cost is
$100. If you are interested, come to El Centro Hispano to register as
soon as possible. We can only accommodate 18 students.
CLASES DE INGLES Y “GED” EN ESPAÑOL AUSPICIADAS POR BOCES EN EL CENTRO
Una vez más, BOCES estará ofreciendo clases de inglés como segunda lengua y de “GED” en español en el Centro de Tecnología del Centro Hispano
de enero a marzo del 2015. Las clases de inglés se ofrecerán de lunes a
viernes de 9:00 a.m. a 12:00 p.m. y los jueves de 6:00 p.m. a 10:00 p.m.
Las de “GED” se ofrecen de lunes a viernes de 12:00 – 3:00 p.m. El costo
de matrícula es de $25. Sólo se aceptan “Money Orders”. Para matricularse
pase por el Centro Hispano de 9 a.m. a 12:00 p.m. el 8 de enero del 2015.
EL CENTRO HISPANO SCHOLARSHIPS
BECAS DEL CENTRO HISPANO
Si están interesados en solicitar a las becas del Centro Hispano, deben
contactar la oficina de consejería y hablar con la Sra. Lesley Tompkins,
Directora del Departamento de Consejería de la Escuela Secundaria de
White Plains.
Los requisitos para recibir las becas son los siguientes:
1. Tener un promedio académico mínimo de 3.5*, o tener un promedio académico de 3.0* y haber trabajado voluntariamente en
el Centro Hispano más de 20 horas al año.
2. Escribir una composición de dos páginas explicando por qué se le
debe considerar para esta beca.
3. Demostrar que necesita ayuda financiera.
4. Estar involucrado en actividades extra-curriculares en el colegio
y en la comunidad, especialmente en el Centro Hispano. Los
estudiantes que son voluntarios en el Centro tendrán preferencia.
5. Ser hispano o de descendencia hispana.
6. Haber sido aceptado en una universidad a la cual asistirá en
septiembre.
7. Hablar español.
8. Llenar la solicitud a tiempo.
9. Vivir en White Plains o estudiar en una de las escuelas privadas
o públicas de esta ciudad.
10. Graduarse de la escuela secundaria este año.
11. Usar el dinero para pagar la matrícula del primer semestre del
año escolar 2013-2014.(No pueden guardar el dinero de un año
para otro)
*Los estudiantes con este promedio académico serán considerados para la beca del Centro Hispano. De acuerdo a los fondos
que tengamos determinaremos si el estudiante recibe la beca o
no. Por favor tenga en cuenta que no es garantizado que los

If you are interested in applying for a scholarship from El Centro Hispano, please contact Ms. Lesley Tompkins, Director of the Guidance Department at White Plains High School.
The requirements to receive a scholarship are as follows:
1. Have a grade point average of at least 3.5* or
Have a grade point average of at least 3.0* and have volunteered at El Centro Hispano more than 20 hours a year.
2. Write a two-page essay indicating why he/she should be considered for this scholarship.
3. Must have financial need.
4. Be involved in extracurricular activities in school and/ or the
community. Special consideration will be given to those students who volunteered at El Centro Hispano or El Centro Hispano- sponsored events.
5. Be Hispanic or of Hispanic descent.
6. Be accepted at a college or university, which the student will
attend in September.
7. Speak Spanish.
8. Complete the application on time.
9. Reside or attend a school in White Plains.
10. Graduate from high school the year of the application.
11. Use the money awarded in the fall of that same year (the
money cannot be put on hold for one year to another).
* Students with this grade point average will be considered
for an El Centro Hispano scholarship; whether or not they will
get one will be dependent on funds available.
Please note: Applying for a scholarship is no guarantee that
a student will get a scholarship from El Centro Hispano.

El Centro Hispano will be distributing fresh food on the following Thursdays: December 18 and January 8 at 3:00 p.m. Please bring a bag.

EN EL CENTRO HISPANO
El Centro Hispano comenzará un nuevo ciclo de clases de computación para
principiantes en enero. El curso durará 16 semanas por un costo de $100.
Si está interesado, en tomar estas clases pase por El Centro Hispano lo
antes posible. Sólo podemos aceptar 18 estudiantes.
