Caracterizando la Economía Colaborativa: La Visión de los Fundadores Characterizing the Collaborative Economy: Strategia | IE The Vision of the Founders 178 Ricardo Pérez Garrido CIO/CEO Coach de Innovación, Profesor de Innovación Digital y Sistemas de Información y Director del Programa Master en Gestión y Negocio Digital IE Business School, Madrid - España CIO/CEO Innovation Coach, Professor of Digital Innovation and Information Systems and Director of the Master’s Program in Digital Management and Business IE Business School, Madrid - Spain IE Business School, España Collaborative Economics presents enormous opportunities for developing economies, from the point of view of resource optimization, job creation, maturation and generalization and the use of technologies more closely linked to actual socio-economic context that to a forced globalization. Su mayor preocupación a la hora de hacer crecer estas iniciativas es la falta de confianza y desconocimiento por parte de los posibles usuarios o clientes de wealth by mobilizing underutilized resources, and its social and community component, including its vision of more honest and controlled consumption of resources makes it fit into a society that increasingly cares about these issues. As you will see by the results of our study, the Collaborative Economy is still in its infancy in Latin America. The most developed market is Brazil, with a very specific context of language and market size makes that makes it interesting even for local initiatives and very young companies that operate mainly in areas that are well known internationally such as vacation or work space rental, rental of means of transportation and services for small businesses. These companies follow in the footsteps of those large one you all have in mind, and open the way for the kind of economy they represent is better understood and to spreads faster in the region. Review the description we make of what they have told us, but center yourself in the vision of the future that they share with us. Your biggest concern when these initiatives grow is the lack of trust and lack of knowledge by potential users or customers of their services in the new business models, of what the Collaborative Economy represents the and how it is structured. International examples help but, as exponents of a rental economy, they look too much like traditional businesses. While it is mobilizing underused resources and producing benefits to new, non-professional economic agents, the truth is that is so fraught with controversies that do not help you see this area as something completely clear and transparent. As you will see in the results, there is much optimism toward the future growth in the market. The formulas have already been tested in other areas, and if they manage to break down barriers of mistrust and ignorance, the future is bright. But surely this can be done only with the weight of the models themselves – they work and help many - surely the path will be shorter if the institutions are put to work. We should not forget that, besides placing underused goods and services in the economic circuit, employment is generated in alternative and undeveloped areas of the economy, which can be a good place to learn, among other things, how the rules of businesses, reputation and online transactions function. Their learning potential for other areas of the economy is enormous. Let’s see what institutions can do that play a crucial role in this time of the development of the Collaborative Economy. Its possible impact on creating small business networks, on collaboration and improvement of economic conditions of small communities, on capacity building related to internet and mobile technologies make such initiatives a tool of social transformation. One of the key points is undoubtedly the regulation – flexibilization - of markets such as transport and vacation rental to match the rules of competition, surely raising some barriers to new business and lowering others for traditional business. • Pueden colaborar y encontrar ingresos alternativos pensando en canalizar sus recursos infrautilizados However, its impact at the local level will be limited: by the characteristics of technology and the systems reputation based platforms, markets tend to focus on a few players. The advantage of companies like Uber and Airbnb in this area makes it difficult for local initiatives have much traction. However, in other areas where the local context is more relevant, in services, training, manufacturing or environmental / agriculture, there are options for growth, and they barely require new regulation. These initiatives need another type of support: consumer trust. Not only from the most advanced or concerned about social matters: these are already customers or promoters. Others need to give a chance to this other option, those who understand that the model is different; that it is based on collaboration or on local production or specialists who are so for what they do in their private lives. Because of this, local success stories are key: creating support strategies based on diffusing how the system works, rather than explaining the technology, on how it supports the economy and local knowledge and building trust from the local context and collaboration. This is not to retell how well the cases we read in the press do, but to promote stories with local sense, supporting their inception and encouraging groupings. The big things always forgotten in this type of analysis are the most traditional companies, representatives of the sectors that are affected by the collaborative consumption IE Business School, España and economy. Beyond the threat, the business world can learn and collaborate in this area: • You can learn helping your customers to share, facilitating the resale of its products, extending their useful life, demonstrating that they have quality, and doing a service to your customers and to the society. Companies like Patagonia Decathlon or already doing so. • They can collaborate by helping the collaboration networks that arise in their sector, which don’t necessarily compete directly with them: training initiatives at the base of the pyramid or exchanging clothing supported by companies in the sector are some examples of what is already happening. They can enable a better understanding what this type of customer seeks, support local development and strengthen its Corporate Social Responsibility policies, and have a more important role in the community. • They can collaborate and find alternative income by thinking about channeling their underused resources (from space to knowledge) into the circuits created by the new models. Although the threat and change are real, the positive aspects they can bring to society in initiatives to retain the spirit of Collaborative Economics are so important that they deserve decisive attention from all walks of power. The institutions should act now, if not at the regulatory level, which surely requires thought and time, enhancing those activities that are likely to generate a real impact in their communities. I invite you to look at what the promoters of the initiatives say have been their main reasons for implementing them: social and community are at the center of what they do. To have local examples, it is necessary to strengthen and develop an ecosystem of technology, knowledge and trust. Not doing so would miss a key opportunity to participate in the development of a society and economies that are fairer and conscientious, more closely linked to what is local and to people, and less to a system that is difficult to recognize. This also gives them an opportunity to generate entirely different service models. 183
