e are approaching that time of the year when the
school year comes to a close, pilgrimages and
summer vacations are about to take shape, and the parish
formalizes its plan for the next fiscal year.
In next week’s bulletin, I will publish my annual report,
entitled, “The Year in Review.” Its aim is to remind us all of
the many “seen” and “behind-the-scenes” work, ministry,
community events, and service that have taken place at our
beloved parish. Actually, it will point to yet another busy
and full year.
Soon after that report, in the spirit of transparency, I
will publish a projected budget for the Fiscal Year 2014-2015.
With the supportive and watchful eye of our Parish Finance
Council, I have been able to present to you a conservative
budget that reflects good stewardship, and which has been
successful each of the past three years that I have served as
your Pastor. This most recent year has been particularly
successful. On my clock, we have always spent our precious
resources with great discernment and forethought. Later
this summer, I will publish the “end of the year” Fiscal
Report for 2013-2014. I suspect you will be pleased to notice
the positive news that it will surely contain.
Regarding the ABCD (the Archbishop’s Charities
Drive), the 2013 campaign was successful. Our parish met its
goal of $217,000. In fact, we surpassed the goal by $41,000.
The overage came back to the parish for use in our annual
budget, which we have decided to use toward our on-going
repairs and renovation projects. The overage could have
actually been much more. The Archdiocesan Office of
Development has reported to us that more than 43
households did not fulfill or complete their promised pledge
last year. The parish could have had an additional $23,000
had everyone done what the pledged to do. I hope that the
current 2014 ABCD Campaign will result in a robust level of
participation by all our parishioners, and that the important
follow-through on pledges will be a hallmark of our good
work together.
Within the next couple of weeks, we will begin the
renovation of three of our church confessionals.
Enhancements to ease of access, comfort, lighting, soundproofing, and climate control will all be elements of the
project. The confessionals should be complete by the fall.
In late fall we will begin the construction of the Grotto of
Saint Therese, which will be located outside the front
entrance of the Parish Office complex. A very attractive
architectural design has already been produced. A
wonderful memorial brick patio awaits your investment as a
legacy of love. Names will be permanently inscribed in the
memorialized bricks and permanently sealed. We hope to
have the project completed in time for the 90th anniversary
celebrations of the school and parish.
On July 3rd, we will again have our annual Patriotic
Service of Prayer and Song, celebrating freedom and
America. More details are forthcoming. We look forward to
having you join us for this inspiring occasion.
Blessings to you all as the celebration of Easter
continues.

TH SUNDAY OF EASTER
MAY 18, 2014
“I am the way and the truth and the life.
No one comes to the Father except through me.”
— John 14:6
THE WAY
I
n today’s Gospel reading we hear part of Jesus’
discourse at the Last Supper as reported in the
Gospel of John. “I am the way and the truth and
life,” Jesus assures his disciples. At that time they
did not understand what he meant; they wanted
easy answers. “Just show us the Father,” Philip
begged.
But the first and second readings show us how
the early church came to understand Jesus’ words.
The amazing growth of the church led them to
select seven men to do the works of service needed
with so many new members. The followers of Jesus
had grown in such numbers that Peter could
exclaim in his Letter over the fact that Christ, the
“rejected stone,” was now the cornerstone on whom
the salvation of all the world rests. Down to this
present day, he is truly the way, the truth, and the
life.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
very Eastern Christians have no sacrament of
“confirmation,” but they have always had the
custom of richly anointing the newly baptized in myron,
or sacred chrism. They also give even infants a taste of
the Precious Blood, thereby doing away with any notion
of “First Communion” in later childhood.
In the West, although we too have an anointing with
chrism for the newly baptized, for centuries we have
normally reserved a second anointing for the bishop,
sometimes many years after baptism. There are many
reasons for this, not the least of which is the fact that in
early times the bishop was the ordinary person to
officiate at baptism, not the presybyter (priest). The
bishop did it all, from plunging the catechumens into
the font, to pouring chrism over them, to immediately
celebrating the Eucharist. When bishops began to cede
some of their ministry to the ranks of presbyters, they
desired to maintain a strong relationship with baptism.
Thus it was decided that the solemn post-baptismal
anointing, the laying on of hands, and the prayer for the
gifts of the Holy Spirit were to be detached from infant
baptism. So, to the present day, we have two anointings
after baptism: one by the priest, and the other normally
by the bishop. By the fifth century, the word
“confirmation” had surfaced to refer to this second
anointing.

ver the years several television shows have focused on rebuilding and reshaping
houses. For over thirty years PBS’s This Old House has offered tips on repairing
homes. More recently, Extreme Makeover takes a team into someone’s home and
transforms it to meet the serious needs of its occupants, often dealing with health or
disability issues or trying to serve the larger community in some way.
From the beginning the church has been imagined as a house of living stones, built on
Jesus Christ, a dwelling place where people come for shelter and sustenance, where they
can set down their burdens and find comfort and consolation before being sent back out in
the world to make it a better place to live.
The risen Christ is truly one who offers an “extreme makeover.” He can be trusted to
shape us into a dwelling place where the Spirit of the Lord takes up permanent residence,
bringing gifts to benefit the world. From the beginning there have been challenges for those
who form the church, and an ongoing need for renovation to meet the needs of the time.
Our efforts to make the church a home where love, mercy, justice, and peace will be
found should lead us to build more firmly on Jesus our cornerstone. When the time comes,
the home he promised to prepare for us and take us to should be easily recognizable. It
should not be that much different from the church we have been living in all our lives.

D
reconstruir y reconfigurar casas.
prepararnos y llevarnos debe sernos fácilmente reconocible.

MEMORIAL BRICK PATIO AVAILABLE AT NEW ST. THERESE GROTTO
In October, the construction of the new grotto in honor of Saint
Therese will begin. It will be under the big tree at the front entrance to
the parish office. The beautiful new oratory will have a brick patio that
will be designated for memorialization's, just like what we did for the
patios at the front doors of church. The grotto, which will have a shrine,
life-size statue of St. Therese, nighttime illumination, flowing water,
and prayer benches, will also have 300 bricks available for purchase by
those wishing to memorialize their own names, the names of a loved
one, or a spiritual sponsorship. Each brick, which will be permanently
placed and sealed, will cost $125. Memorialization forms which are to
include the clear and correct spelling of the names of the individual to
be memorialized, together with checks written to the Church of the
Little Flower, are now being accepted. Please see Mark Landia at the
