Garcia has served as president of Pikes Peak Community College since 2001. “Joe has been a strong leader in Colorado higher education and in the business world,” said Patrick Grant, chairman of the Board of Governors. “His diverse professional background as an attorney, community college president and federal housing official makes him ideal to confront the challenges that face higher education in Colorado.” Throughout the search process, Garcia received strong support from campus and community leaders, as well as the Search Committee. He is expected to begin his new position before fall term begins. “CSU-Pueblo plays a critical role for the State of Colorado with excellent learning opportunities for students and 6 de julio 2006 - 13 de julio 2006 LULAC elects new president Rosa Rosales The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) has elected Rosa Rosales as its new LULAC National President. The majority of members in the BBB of SC are companies located in the Pikes Peak region, but an increasing number are joining from other areas of Southern Colorado. In these challenging economic times, the BBB of SC has been able to achieve a market penetration of almost eleven percent, as compared to other Bureaus in the country who average 6 percent. “It’s just good business.” CHEN/LAEF scholarship recipients received their awards at the ceremony on June 14, 2006. The next step will be to raise an additional $1.8 million for the renovation of the existing building for expanded human services. The entire complex will cost $5.8 million. With the contribution from Focus on the Family at the press conference of $100,000 and donations from individuals and foundations received since, campaign contributions have jumped over $780,000 from $1.745 million to $2.525 million. The majority of the new funds came from a challenge grant from the Gates Family Foundation for $480,000. This challenge grant is contingent upon raising the total project cost.” This is a tremendous accomplishment as it now opens the door for contacting more foundations and applying for more grants. Most foundations don’t want applications until a campaign has reached the 50% mark of needed funds. “The response has been incredible”, said Rochelle Schlortt. “The day after the press conference, my phone was ringing off the hook. One person stopped by the office and just handed the receptionist an envelope with $1,000 in it. No name or anything on it. The person just said they had seen the news broadcast and wanted to help. The generosity and response has been unbelievable!” “In the long history of Colorado Springs, the need to help hungry people in our community has never been greater,” said Tom Corsentino, Director of the Marian House. “We are currently serving an average of 400 - 450 people a day in a dining room that seats only 68 people. And that number has increased significantly this summer as a result of children being out of school. The family dining room has been a very crowded place.” Every day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, between the hours of 10:30 am and 1 pm, Mon – Sat and 8:45 – 10 am Sun, the Marian House serves a hot meal at no charge to anyone who is hungry. They also provide free medical exams through the SET Clinic, job counseling, case management and many other outreach services to help people move towards greater self-sufficiency. “Only 35 to 40% of our guests are homeless,” said Tom Corsentino. “Most are the working poor, single mothers with children, retired veterans who are barely getting by and elderly people on fixed incomes. The free meals and other services provided by the Marian House make it possible for many of these people to keep their homes, because it allows them to keep their money for rent, utilities and other basic needs. Otherwise, they would be living on our streets.” “Most important of all,” said Bob Diekmann, Marian House Operations Manager and Campaign Director for the Capital Campaign, “we’ll be able to serve people in need in this community and do so in a way that treats them with greater dignity. Many people only need the Marian House temporarily. And this is the only place in Colorado Springs that serves the hungry with a mid-day meal, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.” Siga Adelante - Life after cancer treatment A free class for Spanishspeaking individuals who have recently finished cancer treatment will be presented by the Office of Women’s Health, Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). After the agency narrowed the most qualified candidates to a field of four, we feel the proper selection was made. It was interesting to observe the dynamics as they occurred. Many who are active in the Pikes Peak region have become aware of Joe Garcia and all that he does in the community. One of the Challenges of the application process was to assure Pueblo that he served the best interests of Southern Colorado. One of the immediate questions that came up was, that he did not come from an academic background. As an Harvard law graduate, Garcia had worked in law, was the Rocky Mountain State representative for the US Department of Housing & Urban Development and as served as Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies. In 2001, he became President of Pikes Peak Community College; and any one connected to PPCC will share their feelings of great loss for the departure of their President. I was amused how some publications seemed to downplay the CSU-Pueblo President position as a Pueblo “gig.” CSU-Pueblo, much like the entire Pueblo community, is in a state of rapid growth, and Mr. Garcia can provide leadership. It is incumbent upon all of us, not to leave him on an island. We must contribute to the success of CSU-Pueblo, Pueblo and Southern Colorado. Ultrasounds for medical necessity have always been part of TRICARE’s maternity benefit; however, they were formerly covered as a service within the global fee for prenatal care and delivery services. According to Army Col. (Dr.) John Kugler of the TRICARE Office of the Chief Medical Officer, “Because an obstetric ultrasound is not a simple procedure, and may be an involved process, as of April 4, 2006, we changed the policy to have TRICARE cover medically necessary maternity ultrasounds separate from the global delivery fee.” Doctors often perform medically necessary maternity ultrasounds at different times during pregnancy. According to Kugler, “If an obstetric provider has reason for concern, TRICARE will cover the ultrasound.” Specific conditions for which TRICARE will cover an ultrasound include the following: • Estimating gestational age • Evaluating fetal growth • Conducting a biophysical evaluation for fetal well-being • Evaluating a suspected ectopic pregnancy • Defining the cause of vaginal bleeding • Diagnosing or evaluating multiple gestations • Confirming cardiac activity • Evaluating maternal pelvic masses or uterine abnormalities • Evaluating suspected hydatidiform mole • Evaluating the fetus’s condition in late registrants for prenatal care The enhanced ultrasound benefit also helps TRICARE beneficiaries and providers develop stronger partnerships as they discuss when it is appropriate to perform an ultrasound to ensure the best outcome. This benefit enhancement gives uniformed services families greater peace of mind during what can be an emotional time. TRICARE is committed to offering world-class maternity care to world-class service members. Ruining your diet Cont. from page 18 limiting yourself to one serving, or five ounces, of juice a day. The rest of your daily servings of fruits and vegetables should come from actual pieces of fruits and vegetables. Real fruits and vegetables contain the daily fiber your body needs that you won’t find in fruit drinks. Milk Choosing low-fat milks can help you save hundreds of calories each day, says Aaronson. Milk also contains vital nutrients like calcium, protein, vitamin D, and vitamin A that you won’t find in other beverages. Plus, it is recommended that you get three servings of dairy every day. To get the most from your milk, Aaronson says to choose 1 percent, 1/2 percent, or skim milk. With these options, you will still get all the nutrients your body needs but without the extra calories and fat. Sports drinks and energy drinks Although sports drinks replenish your body with electrolytes that help you retain water and stay hydrated, they still contain a lot of calories—one-half to one-third the amount of sugar you’ll find in soda. “Sports drinks were actually developed for endurance athletes,” explains Aaronson. “So if you plan to exercise for more than one continuous hour, then sports drinks are for you.” And you won’t find a lot of nutritional value in energy drinks, either, notes Aaronson. “Energy drinks are not only loaded with calories, but they’ll give you a quick high, followed by an extremely-low low afterward,” explains Aaronson. Alcohol If you are planning an evening of dinner and drinks, remember that you could have the calorie-equivalent to a whole meal in drinks only, before you’ve eaten anything at all. The average glass of wine has about 100 calories and a 12 oz. beer contains approximately 150 calories. According to Aaronson, it’s not uncommon for a mixed drink to have about 300 calories and the decadent frozen drinks like daiquiris to have 500 or more calories each. So limiting the number and types of drinks you have before eating will make a major difference for your waistline. Water So what is the ideal beverage to quench your thirst? It’s the colorless, odorless, and tasteless refresher that makes up over half of our body mass: Water. “Water is the single most important beverage that we can consume,” says Aaronson. “A person could drink only water and be just fine, as long as he supplements his diet with food sources that contain calcium and other nutrients that one may find in other beverages such as milk and juice.” ultrasound benefit, interested parties may visit TRICARE’s Web site at <http:// manuals.tricare.osd.mil> and click on the TRICARE Policy Manual, Change 39, which was posted on April 4, 2006. Se Habla Español In general, 80 percent of a person’s liquid calories should come from water depending on their height, weight, and where they live. That means the average adult should drink between 4 and 6 cups of water a day, which should be supplemented with milk and 100 percent juice to meet total daily liquid requirements. Another option is flavored water that is fortified with vitamins. But Aaronson says if you’re already eating a healthy diet, there’s no reason to drink vitamins in the form of water. The bottom line: “The next time you think about digging into the fridge for a soda, save yourself the money and the calories and reach for the tap instead,” says Aaronson. It comes standard-equipped with advanced safety technology, and follows in the tradition of Honda’s fun-to-drive performance.” Unprecedented Subcompact Seating and Cargo Flexibility Dimensionally compact on the outside, the interior provides a surprisingly large passenger and cargo space for both maximum comfort and utility. At the foundation is the Fit’s Magic Seat(TM), an innovative 60/40 split rear seat that allows the seatbacks to fold down or the seat bottoms to flip up, providing four distinct seating and cargo carrying configurations (refresh mode, tall object mode, long object mode and utility mode) in addition to the standard five passenger mode. With all seats in the upright position, passenger volume measures 90.1 cubic feet (slightly less than an Accord’s passenger volume) with 21.3 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind the second row (slightly less than an Element’s cargo volume behind the second row). In order to help maximize Fit’s useable interior space, Honda located the fuel tank in a central location towards the middle of the vehicle. This allows the cargo floor in the rear of Fit to be relatively low, thus increasing the interior volume. Fun to Drive...Past the Pump The 1.5-liter, SOHC, 16-valve, 4-cylinder VTEC engine generates 109 horsepower @ 5800 rpm and 105 foot-pounds of torque @ 4800 rpm. The compact and efficient powerplant features Honda’s innovative Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC(TM)).The VTEC system’s ability to provide highly efficient operation at low engine speeds and extended performance at high engine speeds benefits fuel economy, power and low emissions. Refinement is further enhanced with electronic Drive-by-Wire throttle control, which provides quick throttle response, smooth automatic transmission shifts (on automatic transmission models) and precise fuel delivery to the engine. Friction reducing technologies include roller bearing tipped rocker arms, a low friction timing chain tensioner, molydebenum coated piston skirts and an offset crankshaft/connecting rod design. The suspension set up for the Fit is a combination of a front MacPherson strut/ rear torsion beam with trailing arm. The compact front suspension and rear torsion beam were both designed to allow for a large passenger cabin with a low floor to maximize the cargo carrying capacity. Fit employs a compact, efficient and highly responsive Electric Power Steering (EPS) system that also contributes to higher fuel economy since engine power is not needed to operate a hydraulic system. These three models include process-oriented psychology, as taught by Dr. Arnold Mindell, PhD; core shamanism, as taught by Dr. Michael Harner, PhD; and energy psychology strategies. Process oriented psychology or processwork, as it is also known, continues to inform my clinical practice more than anything else I have learned. I began my study of core shamanism 24-years ago and continue to pursue training in advanced shamanic healing techniques. Energy psychology methodologies are my most recent addition, having spent the last seven years training, interacting and practicing from a variety of energy psychology educators. Additionally, the disciplines of clinical hypnosis and manual muscle testing (from the field of applied kinesiology) are also incorporated. The content of this book describes the essential underlying operative principles of each of these models and how they are woven together as a whole. The format of the book consists of four primary sections. The first section describes by personal journey and is written from a first person perspective. I describe the various spiritual and energetic practices I have undertaken and how each contributes to my current clinical practice. The second section of the book includes the theory and conceptual underpinnings of Dynamic Energetic Healing®. This includes the energetic origins protocol explaining in detail how all the pieces fit together in application, as well as descriptions of various interventions and how they can be utilized by the reader. The third section of the book describes many clinical case histories taken from my own private practice that richly illustrate the remarkable successes that result from the application of Dynamic Energetic Healing®. The fourth and final section c o n t a i n s concluding chapters that address internal reference point orientations, paradigm shifts that become part of the learning process and two appendixes which include by concernes about t h e pharmacological model and its increasing utilization in treating mood disorders. What tends to be glossed over and essentially ignored in both the popular selfhelp books as well as the spiritual “New Age” books is how damaging and pervasive the long-lasting effects of persistant trauma can be. Being exhorted to think positive thoughts and start a meditation practice will not be sufficient to restore wholeness to the person who has suffered the fragmentation that occurs as a result of trauma. What I know to be true is that trauma with its devastating long-lasting effects is the most underemphasized aspect of Western psychotherapy in spite of the few pioneers who are confronting it. Through Dynamic Energetic Healing® strategies, I have been able to determine that the entire network of a trauma pattern, made up of many single incident traumas over a period of time, can methodically be cleared of all the interrelated symptomatic trauma phenomena. Statistics continue to bear out ever-increasing numbers of Americans who are being prescribed pharmaceutical drugs to deal with their depression and anxiety. We are quickly becoming a culture of drugged and chemicalized people. What is inferred from this but rarely articulated is the limited ability of many licensed healthcare professionals to successfully resolve emotional trauma, and the shocking lack of awareness of the varying and persistant effects of trauma that are still largely not sufficiently recognized and appreciated by these same mental health professionals. Howard Brockman, MA, MSW, LCSW has more than 24 years of clinical experience as a psychotherapist in private practice in Salem, OR. He is a diplomate in clinical social work and a founding member of The Pacific Northwest Center for Energetic Healing. Howard has a master’s degree in Social Ethics and Religious Studies from the University of Southern California and a master’s degree in Social Work from Portland State University. He also has 20 year ’s experience in Kundalini Yoga and meditation practices. Dynamic Energetic Healing® is published by Columbia Press LLC, and can be purchased for $27.95 from dynamicenergetichealing.com or by calling(503) 370-4546. 6 de julio - 13 de julio 2006 Page 17 LITERATURE Desert Blood wins Lambda Award The Lambda Literary Foundation has bestowed its annual award for Best Lesbian Mystery to Alicia Gaspar de Alba’s Desert Blood: The Juárez Murders. The Lambda Literary Awards were presented on May 18 at the Equality Forum at the Human Rights Campaign in Washington, DC during BookExpo America. The Lambda Literary Foundation is the country’s leading organization for LGBT literature whose mission is to celebrate LGBT literature and provide resources for writers, readers, booksellers, publishers, and librarians - the whole literary community. Alicia Gaspar de Alba’s novel, Desert Blood: The Juárez Murders, opens in the summer of 1998. For five years over a hundred mangled and desecrated bodies have been found dumped on the Chihuahua desert outside of Juárez, México, just across the river from El Paso, Texas. El Paso native Ivon Villa has returned to her hometown to adopt the baby of Cecilia, a pregnant maquiladora worker in Juárez. When Cecilia turns up strangled and disemboweled in the desert and Ivon’s younger sister is kidnapped in Juárez, Ivon is thrown into the churning chaos of abuse and murder. Despite sharp warnings from family, friends, and nervous officials, Ivon’s investigation moves her deeper and deeper into the labyrinth of silence. Desert Blood: The Juárez Murders has garnered critics’ praise. In a starred review, Library Journal said, “Offering a powerful depiction of social justice and serial murder...this is an essential purchase for both mystery and Hispanic fiction collections.” And Booklist proclaimed “Gaspar de Alba not only crafts a suspenseful plot but tackles prejudice in many of its ugly forms: against gays, against Hispanics, against the poor. An in-your-face, no-holdsbarred story full of brutality, graphic violence, and ultimately, redemption.” Alicia Gaspar de Alba is the author of various works of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction, among them a collection of poems and essays, La Llorona on the Longfellow Bridge: Poetry y Otras Movidas (Arte Público Press, 2003), and a historical novel Sor Juana’s Second Dream (University of New Mexico Press, 1999). She is also the editor of Velvet Barrios: Popular Culture and Chicana/o Sexualities (Palgrave/ Macmillan, 2003). An Associate Professor of Chicana/o Studies and English at the University of CaliforniaLos Angeles, Gaspar de Alba is a native of the El Paso/Juárez border. She has been researching the crimes since 1998 and organized an international conference on the murders at UCLA in 2003. Arte Público Press is the nation’s largest and most established publisher of contemporary and recovered literature by US Hispanic authors. Its imprint for children and young adults, Piñata Books, is dedicated to the realistic and authentic portrayal of the themes, languages, characters, and customs of Hispanic culture in the United States. Based at the University of Houston, Arte Púbico Press, Piñata Books and the Recovering the US Hispanic Literary Heritage project provide the most widely recognized and extensive showcase for Hispanic literary arts and creativity. More than 50 percent of these children were unrestrained. Also, according to Safe Kids, during that same year, 451 lives were saved through the proper use of child restraints. Responding to this concern, The USAA Foundation has contributed $29,000 to Peak Vista Community Health Centers and Memorial Health System to provide child safety seats to local families in need. “The USAA Foundation continues to be an outstanding community partner,” said BJ Scott, CEO of Peak Vista Community Health Centers. “This contribution, which will go a long way in helping us provide child safety seats to families in need, illustrates the USAA Foundation’s commitment to making a difference in the lives of the people we serve.” “We are grateful for The USAA Foundation’s outstanding and generous support to our community and to our respective health facilities,” said Dick Eitel, CEO of Memorial Health System. “The USAA Foundation’s contribution last year to Memorial has enabled us to distribute 370 infant, toddler and booster seats.” “We are devastated when we see a child with serious or fatal injuries that could have been prevented had they been properly restrained in a car seat,” says Ken Pippus, MD, medical director of pediatric trauma at Memorial Hospital for Children. Safety experts remind parents to replace any car seat involved in a crash. “Thanks to The USAA Foundation’s contribution to Memorial, we can replace these seats for families involved in crashes.” The beverages you drink could be ruining your diet Think you’ve got your diet under control? Framed out columns, decorative stick work, and stone veneer wainscoting give the home a nostalgic look, as do the arched door and window. Lap siding and hipped rooflines add modern touches, while the multipaned windows are as popular now as they were many years ago. Big, fluffy plants suspended from decorative iron shepherd hook planter hangers add to the overall charm. Inside, this plan is packed with all the most popular contemporary features. The kitchen has a large work island and is open to the dining area as well as the vaulted, skylit, and generously glassed great room. Cabinets and a large home entertainment center flank the gas fireplace. Light washes into the dining area through tall French doors, one of which swings open, leading onto a vaulted and partially covered patio. Kitchen cupboard and counter spaces are well supplied, including a good-sized pantry. Appliances are built in. A powder room plus laundry appliances and a deep sink are nearby. These rooms line the hallway that links to a two-car garage with plenty of shop/ storage space. The owners’ suite is a wellisolated adult retreat. Its sleeping area has an elegant tray ceiling, roomy walk-in closet, and direct access to the patio. Bathroom amenities include a deep soaking tub and dual vanity. The shower and toilet are separately enclosed. Secondary bedrooms are on the opposite side of the house. One has a walk-in closet and connects directly to the shared bathroom. Two more rooms line the Springheart’s vaulted entry. These could be furnished as a home office and living room, or put to other uses.
