From the Pastor’s Desk
Me gustaría dar la bienvenida a todos que han venido a unirse
a nosotros para celebrar el 100 aniversario de nuestra parroquia y la escuela y el 40 aniversario de nuestra cocina de sopa.
A lo largo de estos 100 años que, como comunidad de fe,
hemos adorado y orado juntos al servir a los necesitados. Como una parroquia que hemos experimentado todo: los años de
prosperidad de los “Locos Años Veinte”, dos guerras mundiales, los inmigrantes de todo el mundo a establecer en esta parte
de la Uptown, los años salvajes de los años 70 y 80, y la pobreza de nuestra sociedad actual. Ha sido con un espíritu alegre que celebramos bautismos, primeras comuniones, confirmaciones y bodas, y hemos llorado juntos en los funerales y
las dificultades de nuestros seres queridos. Pero a pesar de
todo, ha sido la fe de los feligreses de Santo Tomás de Canterbury que nos ha mantenido fuerte y unido. Eso es lo que esta
celebración número 100 se trata: Se trata de la celebración de
nuestros feligreses, tanto ahora como en el pasado. A causa de
su fe, que han sido el ejemplo de lo que significa ser el cuerpo
de Cristo. Es la fe que ha dado forma y formó esta parroquia,

I would like to welcome all of our parishioners, former parishioners, former pastors, alumni from our school, friends
who have helped with our soup kitchen, friends from our
sharing parishes, and all of our friends and benefactors from
all over who have come to join us as we celebrate the 100th
anniversary of our parish and school and the 40th anniversary
of our soup kitchen. Throughout these 100 years, we, as a
faith community, have worshiped and prayed together as we
served those in need. As a parish we’ve experienced it all:
the prosperous years of the “Roaring Twenties,” two world
wars, immigrants from around the world settling in this part
of Uptown, the wild years of the 70’s and 80’s, and the
homelessness and poverty of our current society. It has been
with a joyful spirit that we celebrated Baptisms, First Communions, Confirmations, and Weddings, and we have cried
together at the funerals and hardships of our loved ones.
But through it all, it has been the faith of the parishioners of
St. Thomas of Canterbury that has kept us strong and united.
That’s what this 100th celebration is all about: It is about
celebrating our parishioners, both now and in the past. Because of their faith, they have exemplified what it means to
be the Body of Christ. It is their faith that has shaped and
formed this parish, making it a beacon of hope for those who
have lost their way or are suffering from the effects of
poverty.
Desde el principio, cuando el P. Francis O’Brien fue nombrado como el primer párroco de la Parroquia de Santo Tomás de
Canterbury en 1916, una buena educación católica se llevó a
cabo en alta estima. Era las Hermanas de la Caridad de la Virgen María, que se abrió la primera escuela en 1916 en una casa
donde la actual rectoría se encuentra. Hoy, la Escuela de Santo
Tomás de Canterbury, bajo la dirección de su director, Sra.
Christine Boyd, está entrando en una nueva era en su nuevo

From the very beginning, when Fr. Francis O’Brien was appointed as the first pastor of St. Thomas of Canterbury Parish
in 1916, a good Catholic education was held in high esteem.
It was the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary who
blazed the trail when they opened our first school in Sept.
1916 in a house where the present rectory it located. Today,
St. Thomas of Canterbury School, under the guidance of its
principal, Ms. Christine Boyd, is entering into a new era in its
new building located on the campus of St. Ita’s Parish, as it
continues to serve the children of immigrant families. Our
soup kitchen, under the direction of Mr. Jim Eder—the
“temporary director” for over 30 years—continues to provide
a hearty meal for those in need. We serve 100–150 guests
each Tuesday and Friday.
As we celebrate our first 100 years, we look forward to our
second 100 years. What the next 100 years will hold, we
don’t know for sure. But, we do know that as we look forward with faith, God will continue to use us to touch the
hearts of others and to proclaim the Gospel to the world.

DOMINGO MUNDIAL DE LAS MISIONES
WORLD MISSION SUNDAY
La próxima semana celebraremos el Domingo Mundial de las
Misiones. La tema de este año es “La Misericordia Cambia
al Mundo.” El Papa Francisco invita a toda la Iglesia a apoyar a las jóvenes diócesis misioneras de África, Asia, las Islas
de Pacifico y algunas partes de Latinoamérica y Europa, en
donde sacerdotes y líderes religiosos y laicos sirven algunos
de los más pobres entre los pobres. Por favor incluyan a las
Misiones en sus oraciones y sean generosos con la colecta de
la próxima semana para la Sociedad para la Propagación de
la Fe.
Next week, we will celebrate World Mission Sunday. Its
theme this year is “Mercy Changes the World.” Pope Francis
invites the entire Church to support the young mission dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin
America and Europe, where priests, religious and lay leaders
serve some of the poorest of the poor. Please keep the Missions in your prayers and be generous in next week’s collection for the Society of the Propagation of the Faith.
