El primero de los artículos, firmado por Antonio Argüeso,
detalla la metodología utilizada por el INE para realizar sus
proyecciones de población a corto y largo plazo. También a
partir de las proyecciones de pirámides de población se pue
den observar cambios en la tasa de dependencia, tal y como se
expone en el artículo elaborado por Josep Antón Sánchez,
Mont8errat Navarro y Mireia Farré, de ldeseat. A continua
ción, y entrando en el tema de las pensiones, Alicia de las He
ras, analiza las estadísticas ofrecidas por la Subdirección Ge
neral de Estudios Económicos del Instituto Nacional de la
Seguridad Social, principal fuente nacional sobre el número y
gasto en pensiones. Juan Varela en su artículo, nos detalla la
metodología seguida por el Ministerio de Economía a partir
de la información disponible y en base a determinados su
puestos para realizar proyecciones del gasto público en pen
siones que se ponen en común dentro de la UE. Éstas y otras
fuentes estadísticas internacionales para el análisis de los sis
temas de pensiones quedan recogidas en el artículo de Javier
Alonso Meseguer. Los últimos artículos estarán firmados por
expertos de otros campos que utilizan las estadísticas para sus
trabajos sobre la vejez. José Enrique Devesa, nos apunta las
principales estadísticas utilizadas por los actuarios de seguros,
y Cristina Saavedra y Lourdes Pérez analizan las estadísti
cas que nos permiten investigar algunas de las características
psicológicas y sociológicas de los mayores .

milk from the Milk from the Heart program which makes weekly deliveries to Washington Heights and 12 other
locations in Manhattan and the Bronx in New York City. As the nation struggles with protracted recession, ·prices on
many foOO staples have continued to rise. According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, milk priees
throughout the Northeast are 19 pereent higher than two years ago with the average priee of a gallon of milk now at
$4. The Milk from the Heart program gíves índividuals in need two free quarts of milk and hands out about 14,000
quarts a month. The program, which has witnessed a steady increase in participants, is financed partly by prívate
