SYNOPSIS SINOPSIS For two years Ashley Coleman, a rough, ragged beauty in her mid-twenties, has walked a tightrope, trying to prove that she is fit to be a mother and regain custody of her son. She has survived on a series of minimum wage jobs and endured the probing scrutiny of home visits from Social Services. Cynical and embittered, she is convinced her son was taken because she is poor, and she carries a class rage that is difficult to control. But while Ashley sees herself as a victim, we see a woman who has lost her child because she is not ready to be a mother. A surprise visit from her father, a truck driver living in Mexico, brings Ashley back into a turbulent and unresolved relationship. On a trip to Nuevo Laredo, she discovers that her father is smuggling immigrants across the border. Suddenly, in the vast, unforgiving landscape of south Texas, Ashley glimpses a solution to her problems and is lured by a substantial payday into the role of a coyote. Things quickly go awry, and Ashley finds herself stuck with a young girl whose mother disappeared in the late-night river crossing. Intending at first to abandon the girl, she instead begins a journey in search of the girl’s missing mother. Together with the girl, Ashley travels through the borderlands of Nuevo Laredo and along the banks of the Rio Grande, retracing the steps of the immigrant journey. When she finally learns that the girl’s mother drowned, Ashley decides to bring her back to her village in southern Mexico. Along the way, she discovers something unexpected, something she didn’t even know she had – her own mothering instinct. TESTIMONIO DEL DIRECTOR DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT ROOTS Some years ago, I made a film in New York City with immigrants from across the Americas. The film tells a familiar story of uprootedness, in some ways the story of America itself. But what struck me, and affected me most deeply, was how things had changed. Instead of meeting families building a new life in an unfamiliar world, the families were torn in two. A vast diaspora of solitary men and women fill the screen. With few exceptions, the immigrant today moves through the world alone. It is a life of separation, beginning at the moment of departure. But the reason for the separation, and its deeper meaning, is tied to the border, and to the moment of crossing. I travelled to the border, and on the Mexican side I visited a shelter for immigrants trying to cross the river into Texas. Hundreds of men and women, stranded and wretched, were crowded in the shelter’s halls. At night they made their way to the river’s edge, and there, among strangers, they undressed. They stepped into the water, and in the crossing a kind of baptism occurred, a piece of who they were forever left behind. Pushed and pulled across the continents, the scene is repeated every night. A constant stream of men and women heading north in search of hope. SHOOTS INSPIRACIÓN It was in the flat landscape of south Texas, researching the border, that I found the starting point for my new film. I was driving, and had somehow become hopelessly lost in an endless maze of new subdivisions. On every street, new housing peaked out over boundary walls, giant billboards promising a new life: ‘Dream Homes from $115K,’ ‘3 Bedrooms Starting in the 200s.’ Then I came upon a rundown trailer camp, and saw an Anglo woman walking to her rundown car. I began to wonder what it must feel like to live in the epicenter of the American Dream -- and yet feel left out. Slowly, the character of Ashley Coleman began to stir. Nickel and dimed, barely surviving, she lives in the very place that the stream of immigrants dreams of being, but the dream has no meaning to her. Instead of hope, she feels trapped. What might deliver her from the quicksand of her life? One question led to another: Can the myth of the border – that hope flows north -- be turned upside down? What if Ashley made the journey south, against the very current of the migrant stream? What hope or sense of possibility might she discover in the crossing? LEAVES TRAMA The story of the THE GIRL begins when Ashley meets Rosa by the Rio Grande. At the border their two worlds collide – and there is little reason to expect otherwise. In fits and starts an unlikely relationship develops between them. It occurs out of need -- Rosa’s need is obvious, while Ashley’s is deeply buried.Yet only when Ashley comes to realize that she too needs Rosa is their journey possible. They travel through the borderlands, following the river to the sea, and slowly the logic of the border disappears. Instead of one minus one, there are two. A family of sorts is made. The heart of the film is this relationship – one that neither expects, and neither is looking for. But somehow, in spite of themselves, an Anglo woman from Texas and a young girl from the south of Mexico come together, change each other, and finally discover that they have something profoundly in common – that they are in a way sisters.
