The Redemptorists - Boston`s Basilica
Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time From the Rector Very Rev. Joseph Tizio, C.Ss.R. I would like to share a few varied thoughts with you this week. First of all, as I look at my appointment book, I notice that today, Sunday, October 16th, is “Laity Sunday”. I am thinking to myself, what a great Sunday it is to have our Parish Assembly. More than anything, the assembly celebrates that all of us together form the Church. My prayer for the assembly today is that all those who attend will feel empowered and will know that we need their gifts and talents if we are going to continue to preach the Gospel here in our community. Secondly, this Tuesday, October 18th is the feast of the evangelist, St. Luke. More than any other gospel, Luke is the gospel of social justice. In Luke’s gospel, Christ is especially worried and concerned about the forgotten, the marginalized, the outcasts. God’s love and mercy are universal, open to all people. It is the poor, the foreigners, and the forgotten who are most open to God’s presence and mercy in Christ. In this day and age where prejudice and hate seem to be growing stronger, Luke reminds us of God’s universal love. The next day we celebrate the feast of the North American Martyrs, St. Isaac Jogues, John de Brebeuf and their companions. They were martyred close to here in Aurisville, New York. Sometimes, we may forget that the faith we celebrate has been handed down to us at a great price. Men and women literally gave their lives so that we can come to know Jesus Christ in our Catholic faith. Finally, this Saturday, October 22nd, is the feast of St. John Paul II. What a great blessing it is have celebrate a saint whom we saw, knew, and experienced. Tuesday Shrine Members Living and Deceased +Fr. James McGonagle, C.Ss.R.
