Technology Innovation Center, Hall A – Friday, 10 am - Noon
Cardinal Roger Mahony conducts his 12th online chat session live from
Congress. His chats open the weekend’s presentations at the newly updated and renamed “Congress Technology Innovation Center,” located
near the center of Hall A. Drop by to ask a question or just watch!
EUCHARISTIC LITURGIES
Friday through Sunday
Congress annually offers a variety of liturgies from which to choose.
This year there are 13 Eucharistic Liturgies of different character, from
Contemplative to Jazz, from Spanish to Nigerian, in addition to early
morning, evening and late-night prayer services.
SACRED SPACE
Convention 304 – Friday through Sunday
Sacred Space returns to its home on the third level of the Convention
Center. Dedicated to facilitating spiritual rejuvenation, our Sacred Space
will offer Eucharistic Adoration in the Chapel, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, a labyrinth, meditative music and art.
ST. JOHN’S BIBLE
Convention 304 – Friday through Sunday
The next phase of the St. John Bible Project will be featured at Sacred
Space. The St. John’s Bible is the first handwritten, hand-illuminated
Bible commissioned since the development of the printing press.
ART EXHIBIT
Arena Lobby – Friday through Sunday
Our exhibit features works by artist Lalo Garcia, who has spent 25
years immersed in the world of art as design artist, production designer,
stage director and choreographer. His work appears in numerous Southwest churches, including the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.
CATHOLIC FILMMAKERS’ SHOWCASE
Hilton Pacific AB – Friday & Saturday, 8 - 10:30 pm
Our Filmmakers’ Showcase presents film excerpts, both documentary
and fiction, that highlight the work of Catholic producers and directors
from across the country. This year’s films focus on faith, spirituality
and social justice. Fr. Ron Schmidt will host each night’s screenings.
SPECIAL EVENT
Saturday, 10 am - 4 pm
BY INVITATION ONLY: The Soy Catequista event emphasizes the
dignity, vocation and mission of catechists. Our gathering echoes the
2006 event sponsored by William H. Sadlier in collaboration with diocesan and parish leaders and faculty of the University of Notre Dame.

January 1, 1956 - January 3, 2008
John O’Donohue, Irish author, poet and a regular
speaker at Congress, died suddenly January 3 at
age 53 while vacationing in France. From 1999
to 2006, O’Donohue was an annual presenter at
the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress.
He was scheduled to present two workshops at
Congress this year.
The author of “Anam Cara,” a best-seller published
in England in 1997 and later in the United States,
O’Donohue also authored “Eternal Echoes,” “Beauty,
The Invisible Embrace” and most recently “Benedictus:
A Book of Blessings” in addition to two books of poetry.
Reprinted below is a blessing he wrote especially for our
2006 Congress Opening Event.
A BLESSING FOR FREEDOM
As a bird soars high
In the free holding of the wind,
Clear of certainty of ground,
Opening the imagination of wings
To trust the grace of emptiness
And fulfill new voyagings,
May your life awaken
To the call of its freedom
As the ocean absolves itself
Of the expectation of land
Through approaching only
In the form of waves
That fill and pleat and fall
With such gradual elegance
As to make of the limit
An utterly creative threshold
Whose music echoes out along
Its give and strain of sea memory,
May your heart know the freedom
That can draw beauty from limitation.
As the embrace of the earth
Will welcome all we call death,
Taking deep into itself
The tight solitude of a seed,
Allowing it all the time it needs
To shed the grip of its former form
And give way to a deeper generosity
That will one day send it forth
As a tree into Springtime,
May all that holds you
Of smallness and loss
Fall from its hungry ledge
Into the creative clay of your heart.

SATURDAY KEYNOTE
REV. ROBERT BARRON
The church’s primary mission is to proclaim Jesus as Lord. This call is rooted
in a tradition going back to St. Paul for whom proclaiming Jesus as “Lord”
was an absolute stand against the powers and authorities of the world – political, cultural, economic and military. When we look at Jesus we see him as
gatherer of the lost, embodiment of the Kingdom, friend of sinners, victor
over death. Those involved in the ministry of catechesis are challenged to see
-– and help others see – the world through the lens of Jesus, and to model
their lives on the pattern of Christ’s own life. Their evangelizing mission is a
bold proclamation that “Jesus is Lord!”

REV. JOSÉ-ROMÁN FLECHA ANDRÉS
“Alza tu mirada hacia Dios y vuelve a mirar a tus hermanos”

ARENA
CONGRESS 2008 PROCLAMATION
David Haas
We rejoice as a people,
a people who gather here from many places,
from many points of view,
who worship and celebrate our God
in many different ways,
with different songs, and different movements,
but all united and centered upon this God
who helps us lift our gaze, and to see anew, over and over again!
F
R
I
D
A
Y
We rejoice because God has claimed us
and named us and loved us
and continues to celebrate us all
as a people who stumble in the darkness
but continue to keep our gaze fresh and bright.
We rejoice because we are not bound by our blindness;
we are not limited by our finite horizons;
we are not defined by those principalities and powers
that cloud our vision,
that diminish our spirit.
We are claimed by God because our God –
believe it or not –
believes in us!
Our God truly is an awesome God
who shares the divine spark in each of us;
Our God is worthy of our praise
because we are graced with possibility, with hope,
with the potential
to be more than we are,
to be the eyes, hands, ears, and heart of God!
Our God has given us the Christ,
the anointed one,
the one who places mud and clay on our eyes and our hearts,
so that the blockage may be set free;
so that we may lift our gaze and see anew!
We celebrate the gift of Jesus Christ,
the gift of new life, of new sight, and new hope.
With this flame,
our hearts burn with the joy that comes
in surrendering our lives to the one
who calls each of us by name;
the one who moves and stirs within us,
and helps us to really see again.
This Christ, this light,
will be for us this weekend
a sign and call for us to lift our gaze beyond the petty,
beyond our differences,
beyond our selfishness and egos, to see anew,
to live anew,
to sing anew!

SONG OF THANKSGIVING
In Christ Alone
Don Koch and Shawn Craig
In Christ alone will I glory, though I could pride myself in battles won;
For I’ve been blessed beyond measure, and by His strength alone I overcome.
Oh, I could stop and count successes like diamonds in my hand,
but those trophies could not equal to the grace by which I stand.

REFRAIN:
In Christ alone I place my trust and find my glory
in the power of the cross.
In ev’ry victory let it be said of me:
My strength, my source of hope is Christ alone.
In Christ alone will I glory, for only by His grace I am redeemed.
Only His tender mercy could reach beyond my weakness to my need.
Now, I seek no greater honor then just to know Him more,
and to count my gains as losses to the glory of my Lord.

CLOSING SONG
May This Circle Be Unbroken
Arr. by J. V. Marchionda, O.P.
Refrain
1.
We’ve all suffered pain and sorrow, over folks that we have lost.
But by trusting what our Lord won for us, we find strength to bear that cross.
2.
There is sadness, oh, such grieving, when the ones we love depart.
But we’ll cherish all they mean to us, for they’ll always live in our hearts.
3.
There are some folks who die worried, feeling burdened by their sins.
But, we’ll know that Jesus saves them all, and that they will rise again.
4.
Those who earthly lives have ended join the saints in heav’n above.
And, we living, who are joined with them, create one communion of love.
5.
Now our loved ones live with angels in that holy heav’nly throng.
And, since we are still so bound to them, we can joyfully sing along.

1. Un nuevo día ha llegado, el sol empieza a salir;

Oh, to Be Kept by Jesus
Thurston Frazier
Oh, to be kept by Jesus, Kept by the power of God.
Kept from the world unspotted, Treading where Jesus trod.
REFRAIN
Oh, to be kept by Jesus: Lord, at Thy feet I fall;
I would be nothing, nothing, nothing, Thou shalt be all and all.
Oh, to be kept by Jesus, Kept through toil and trials,
Kept by His hand in mine.
Kept by His Holy Spirit, To me this is best of all.
I’m safe in His holy keeping, He’ll ever hear my call.
Oh, to be kept by Jesus, Kept by the power of God.
Kept from the world unspotted, Treading where Jesus trod.

SONG OF THANKSGIVING
I Almost Let Go
Kurt Carr
I almost let go, I felt like I just couldn’t take life anymore.
My problems had me bound, depression weighed me down,
but God held me close so I wouldn’t let go.
God’s mercy kept me so I wouldn’t let go.
I almost gave up, I was right at the edge of a breakthrough but couldn’t see it.
The devil really had me, but Jesus came and grabbed me,
And He held me close so I wouldn’t let go.
God’s mercy kept me so I wouldn’t let go.
So I’m here today because God kept me.
I’m alive today only because of His grace.
Oh, He kept me. God kept me,
He kept me so I wouldn’t let go.
I almost let go, I felt like I just couldn’t take life anymore.
My problems had me bound, depression weighed me down,
but God held me close so I wouldn’t let go.
God’s mercy kept me so I wouldn’t let go.

PRELUDE/PRELUDO
And Jesus Said
Tony Alonso
And Jesus said: Don’t be afraid –
I’ve come to turn your fear to hope, I’ve come to take you through the deep
to be your friend until the end, and give your troubled heart to sleep.
And Jesus said: Don’t be afraid –
I know your emptiness and grief, I hear your words of unbelief,
but if you will, I’ll heal your soul and give your doubting heart relief.
And Jesus said: Don’t be afraid –
I am the Way, I am the Light, I am the Truth that holds you tight,
and in God’s home you have a room, a place of welcome and delight.

VERSES
1. Lift your gaze and see anew there beauty all around.
Stretch the edges of your view. Let the peace of God abound.
Open wide your heart to see the wonders of God’s love;
unveil the gifts God placed inside of you – lift your gaze and see anew!
When the eye catches fire, God will then be seen.
A beam of light in the dark of night sparks a ray of hope supreme.
The sightless eyes are transformed to see all things anew.
The wisdom of God’s sight becomes our view – lift your gaze and see anew!
3.
Just a glimpse through God’s eyes, what wonders can there be?
The lame can walk, the dumb can talk, the blind man now can see.
Just a glance, a second chance to stand in liberty;
Ignite the spark for all humanity – lift your gaze and see anew!
Arena
2.
BRIDGE/PUENTE
A vision of peace in time of war.
Hope in despair;
Refuge in the midst of a storm:
Let us see through the eyes of God.
Visiones de paz, no la guerra;
esperanza, no la desesperación;
refugio en la tormenta:
a través de los ojos de Dios.
CODA
Voice 1: Lift your gaze and see anew.
Alza tu mirada y vuelve a mirar.
Voice 2: Just open your eyes and see, see anew.
Abre tus ojos y ve; vuelve a mirar.
Voice 3: God of seeing, God of sight, help us see anew.
Dios de vista, Dios de visión, queremos ver tu luz.

ENDOWMENT CONTRIBUT
ORS
CONTRIBUTORS
The Religious Education Endowment Fund was established by the Office of Religious Education to support the ongoing training and formation of religious education leaders, particularly by making scholarships available for the
ongoing education and formation of Directors of Religious Education, Adult Educators, Young Adults and Youth
Ministers to pursue graduate studies. It is our hope that every Director of Religious Education and Director of Youth
Ministry will be given the opportunity to receive a master’s degree in Religious Education/Religious Studies.
Any additional contribution through mail-in registrations and those who registered online could contribute to this
Fund. As of January 25, 603 people responded with contributions totaling $8,850. We sincerely appreciate and
acknowledge their contributions. The fund is currently enabling 10 students to pursue a master’s degree in Religious
Education, and you will be happy to know that several have already graduated!
