REQUIRED RCIA SESSIONS ALREADY STARTED ON APRIL 20th BUT IT IS NOT TOO LATE – JOIN US ON MAY 18th The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is the official rite of the Church for those seeking entry into the Church. The Rite has four distinct stages – Inquiry, Catechumenate, Purification and Mystagogy. The first stage of RCIA is Inquiry and consists of 9 sessions. Inquiry is a chance to get a basic introduction to Catholicism, to ask questions, to share your “story” in a comfortable informal setting, and to grow in your relationship with the Lord. Inquiry, as with all the stages of RCIA, is a mandatory step in the process. The first two sessions were already held on April 20 & 27. But we will allow others to join us for session 3 on May 18th. Sessions are held on Wednesday evenings, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, on the dates listed below. Meetings are held in Room 2 at the Parish Center on Garden Street, between Murray and Race. There is no fee to attend, and no pre-registration is required – just bring an open mind and a willing heart. If you have any questions, please contact Deacon Ken Ramage - 734-8303; or Jack Martinusen – 303-8706. Sixth Sunday of Easter: May 1, 2016 “The Holy Spirit, sent by the Father in Jesus’ name, will teach us everything” –John 14:23-29 Reflection “MERCY, TENDERNESS, COMPASSIONATE LOVE” Those very qualities in the lives of the first Christian leaders enabled the early church to welcome “outsiders” and make them feel comfortably at home. The young community looked like Revelation’s new Jerusalem, gates facing everywhere, welcoming everyone. Announcing this year’s Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis declared mercy, tenderness, and compassionate love, offered unfailingly to all, essential to our identity as Jesus’ disciples, crucial for authentic Christian witness. Sadly, wrote Francis, the practice of mercy seems to be waning in our world. But no matter what we experience from others, everyone who meets us should encounter Jesus’ mercy. In today’s Gospel, on the very night Jesus experienced betrayal, denial, and desertion, he still bequeathed shalom to those about to fail—and to us. Not the world’s broken promises and competing self-interests, but Jesus’ soul-deep, rock -solid peace, enabling us to survive life’s inner pain and outer storms, inviting us to imitate Jesus’ own selfsacrifice, giving glory to God, giving life to others. Today’s Readings: Acts 15:1–2, 22–29; Ps 67:2–3, 5, 6, 8; Rev 21:10–14, 22–23; Jn 14:23–29 ZALUD SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABLE Pearl Zalud, a long-time resident of Porterville, established a fund to provide scholarships to full-time college students who are majoring in music or agriculture or a related field of study. To believe that the Holy Spirit is at work in everyone means realizing that he seeks to penetrate every human situation and all social bonds. . . . Accepting the first proclamation, which invites us to receive God's love and to love him in return with the very love which is his gift, brings forth in our lives and actions a primary and fundamental response: to desire, seek and protect the good of others. (Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium, no. 178) 1. As a nation, we share many blessings and strengths, including a tradition of religious freedom and political participation. However, as a people, we face serious challenges that are both political and moral. This has always been so and as Catholics we are called to participate in public life in a manner consistent with the mission of our Lord, a mission that he has called us to share. As Pope Francis teaches, An authentic faith . . . always involves a deep desire to change the world, to transmit values, to leave this earth somehow better than we found it. We love this magnificent planet on which God has put us, and we love the human family which dwells here, with all its tragedies and struggles, its hopes and aspirations, its strengths and weaknesses. The earth is our common home and all of us are brothers and sisters. If indeed "the just ordering of society and of the state is a central responsibility of politics," the Church, "cannot and must not remain on the sidelines in the fight for justice." (Evangelii Gaudium, no. 183) In this fight for justice, God gives us a special gift, hope, which Pope Benedict describes in Caritas in Veritate as "burst[ing] into our lives as something not due to us, something that transcends every law of justice" (no. 34). Thus we take up the task of serving the common good with joy and hope, confident that God, who "so loved the world that he gave his only Son," walks with us and strengthens us on the way (Jn 3:16). God is love, and he desires that we help to build a "civilization of love"- one in which all human beings have the freedom and opportunity to experience the love of God and live out that love by making a free gift of themselves to one another. Pope Francis encourages us in Evangelii Gaudium to meditate on the inseparable bond between our acceptance of the message of salvation and genuine fraternal love . . . God's word teaches that our brothers and sisters are the prolongation of the incarnation for each of us: "As you did it to one of these, the least of my brethren, you did it to me" (Mt 25:40). The way we treat others has a transcendent dimension: "The measure you give will be the measure you get" (Mt 7:2). It corresponds to the mercy which God has shown us: "Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you . . . For the Weekly Collection Your continued generosity in the weekly collections is greatly appreciated. The collection amount for the week ending, April 24, 2016: SM HF SC ST All Actual Collection Amount: $17,133.82 Actual Collection Amount: $4,512.03 Actual Collection Amount: $8,816.37 Actual Collection Amount: $470.02 Home Missions Amount: $9,583.16 SECOND COLLECTION FOR BETHLEHEM CENTER MAY 15 On May 15 we will be taking a second collection for Catholic Charities which will directly benefit The Bethlehem Center. The Bethlehem Center is one of the only dining halls that provides hot food prepared daily. Also providing Visalia’s needy families of the community with pantry food boxes. The Bethlehem Center is one of few places that needy families can turn to in time of need; Reaching out to those without a house to live in, by offering clothing and laundry vouchers to its impoverished population. Through the help of volunteers and everyday people from the community, the Bethlehem Center is able to help those struggling with alcohol and drug abuse, by offering resistance and abstinence programs held onsite. Expanding its horizons, the Bethlehem Center has also opened up a thrift store to keep up with the demand for affordable clothing. Donations are what really keep this non-profit going, so any contributions are welcomed whole heartedly. We aim to create a better environment by giving hope and attention to those who have been stricken with bad luck or those who simply cannot afford basic human necessities. Please consider giving generously on May 15. measure you give will be the measure you get back" (Lk 6:36-38). What these passages make clear is the absolute priority of "going forth from ourselves toward our brothers and sisters" as one of the two great commandments which ground every moral norm and as the clearest sign for discerning spiritual growth in response to God's completely free gift. (no. 179) Love compels us "to 'go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation' (Mk 6:15)" (Evangelii Gaudium, no. 181). "Here," Pope Francis continues, "'the creation' refers to every aspect of human life; consequently, 'the mission of proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ has a universal destination. Its mandate of charity encompasses all dimensions of existence, all individuals, all areas of community life, and all peoples. Nothing human can be alien to it'" (Evangelii Gaudium, no. 181). This "mandate" includes our engagement in political life. Part II of This Article will Continue in next week’s bulletin Masses & Intentions SATURDAY, APRIL 30.
