PARISH OFFICE 763-421-2471
"Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There
is need of only one thing." Martha was caught up in a whirlwind of her
own making. She stressed herself out with all the tasks and chores she
thought she had to do to host Jesus, but Jesus wasn't the one who expected all of that. He just wanted Martha's presence, her company and
friendship. His only expectation was that Martha would prepare for him
her heart, but she was fixated on preparing her home instead.
How often do we create a similar whirlwind in our lives? How often do
we fixate on external details, on making a good impression, on having
all appearances
looking just so,
but forget what
really matters?
How often do we
make ourselves
"anxious
and
worried" about
all we think we
have to do? In
today's Gospel
Jesus calls us to
stop the frenetic
activity of our lives, to pause and listen, imitating Mary "who sat beside
the Lord at his feet listening to him speak."
This can seem impossible. We look at our calendars and our to-do lists
and cannot find a single slot in which to squeeze quiet prayer or silent
spiritual listening. But Jesus asks us to reorganize our priorities. He tells
us, "There is need of only one thing." Really, Jesus? Have you seen our
lists!? What can we possibly eliminate? Don't we need to do all of this?
The Lord says no. What we need to do is to make time to be with him.
The same Lord who turned water into wine and fed five thousand men
with five loaves of bread and two fish can also multiply our time. So instead of being like Martha who tried to tell Jesus what to do - "Tell her to
help me" - let's be like Mary who listened to what Jesus had to say.

Two Workshops Scheduled for All Extraordinary
Ministers of Holy Communion
There are now two workshops scheduled for all Extraordinary Ministers of
Holy Communion Saturday, August 20 from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.
and Thursday, August 25 from 7:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. At these workshops procedures will be reviewed and questions answered. These workshops are for all Ministers who are currently serving here at St. Stephen’s.
Attendance at only one of the two workshops is required. Please RSVP to
Amanda Lutes: [email protected]; 763-712-7458.
Those who might be considering the ministry of Extraordinary Minister
of Holy Communion are encouraged to contact Amanda as well. Ministers are always needed for all Masses here. Anyone interested in serving will be put in touch with one of the priests for a meeting. If that
person discerns that they are ready to serve after this meeting, one of
the priests will have a formal commissioning session for them. This commissioning session usually takes place after one of the weekend Masses.
Then the new minister will be paired with an experienced minister for
some mentoring and training. New ministers will be encouraged to attend the trainings in August as well.
Persons who have been appointed to be Extraordinary Ministers of Holy
Communion are necessarily to be duly instructed and should distinguish
themselves by their Christian life, faith and morals. Let them strive to be worthy of this great office; let them cultivate devotion to the Holy Eucharist and
show themselves as an example of piety and reverence for this Most Holy
Sacrament of the altar. (Pope Paul VI – Immensae Caritatits)
Altar Server Trainings Scheduled –
New Altar Servers Needed
Two training sessions led by our Associate Pastors will be held on Thursday, August 4 and Tuesday, August 16 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the

begin serving are all encouraged to attend. Servers need only attend
one of the two sessions.
Parents are encouraged to stay for a few minutes for instruction at the
beginning of the session.

Pastoral Care
A Reflection
Please Pray for...
Sr. Mary Anne Schaenzer
Today’s first reading from Genesis 18:1-10A, regarding the visit of the
three men to Abraham, always reminds me of an experience I had a
little over 15 years ago when I was spending some time in Israel. On a
Sunday I went over to Jerusalem (from Bethany where we were staying)
and walked into a shop which carried beautiful art works. When I had
been in the area with others in our group there was never a sense that
people wanted to go in and look around, so I went over by myself.
As I walked into the shop in Old Jerusalem the owner greeted me. I
explained to him that I could not buy anything in his shop but that I
would just like to come in and look around and would that be all right.
He invited me in to look around. A few minutes later a woman came
out with a tray with glasses of water. I took one. I enjoyed it as I walked
around admiring the art. Then she came out again. This time she had a
tray with coffee on it. I tried to explain that I did not intend to buy anything (I felt that they were encouraging me to buy by bringing these
beverages to me). As it turned out she did not speak English and she
left to find the owner.
The owner came out and asked me if there were a problem. I repeated
that I had said that I did not want to buy anything, I just wanted to
look, but she kept bringing things to me. He looked at me and said,
“You don’t have to buy anything. This is my hospitality. When the angels
came to Abraham and he fed them, he was not asking them to buy anything. He was offering them hospitality. I am offering hospitality to you.
If I come to visit you, you can offer hospitality to me.”
Sometimes God is just offering hospitality to us – God doesn’t expect us
to buy something. God has chosen to make known riches to us: Christ
in us, the hope for glory (Col 1:27). And Jesus asks us to not only work
and serve him but to be with him (Lk 10:38-42). We don’t earn the gifts
God gives us. We only need to receive them.
Be Renewed By God's Mercy
Pope Francis said, "Let's not forget that God forgives and God forgives always." If you or someone you love is grieving the loss of a child or children
to abortion, come and experience the compassionate mercy of Jesus
Christ on our weekend retreat. Rachel’s Vineyard Twin Cities' retreats
are open to anyone impacted by abortion - women, men, grandparents,
siblings, and health care professionals. The next retreat is August 5-7
in the Twin Cities area. For more information contact Nancy at rachels@
rvineyardmn.org, call 763-250-9313, or see www.rvineyardmn.org.

Stewardship Reflection
“…I am a minister in accordance with God’s stewardship given to me to
bring to completion for you the word of God.” Colossians 1:25
Believe it or not,
we are all called to
evangelize – to continuously grow in our
knowledge and relationship with Jesus
and to share it with
others. We may not
be called to evangelize like St. Paul, but we should look for opportunities to share our Faith
with those closest to us, like our family and friends.

¿Has visto nuestras listas?

Hermana Mary Anne Schaenzer
tres hombres a Abraham.
Me invitó a pasar.
Me
Abraham
