FC Barcelona - Invest Hong Kong
Success Stories
“ Hong Kong is exactly the
environment we need to achieve
our objectives in this region.
We feel very comfortable here.”
Antoni Rossich, CEO
FC Barcelona
Barcelona Comes to Hong Kong
FC Barcelona has set up its Asian headquarters in the city
“We have selected Hong Kong for several reasons. First, the
business environment – here you have all the resources and
services that are required. Second, it is a very cosmopolitan and
well-known city and thirdly, from the transport and logistics
point of view, it is situated right in the middle of Asia Pacific,
where we have the largest fan base,” Antoni Rossich, CEO, FC
Barcelona, said.
FC Barcelona has a unique ownership model. The club is owned
by its members (more than 150,000) and is not profit-oriented,
i.e. its owners do not receive any dividends. In the long run,
of course, the financial and economic development of the
club is important and setting up a base in Hong Kong will help
maximise revenue and promote the brand through association
with other prestigious brands.
The Hong Kong office has kicked off with five staff and is
expected to grow to about 20. The office’s roles are to explore
the market, to reach agreements with brands in the region which
share the same values, and to provide services to the club’s
clients. The club already has partners in the region, including for
example Mainland China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, India
and Japan.
Core Values
FC Barcelona’s sporting and social model is based on a set of
core values: teamwork, respect, tolerance, commitment, effort
and excellence. The club wants its members and fans to be
proud of and loyal to the club.
Hong Kong is a perfect fit for FC Barcelona in many respects.
Rossich finds it an ambitious city, which matches the
competitive spirit of a world-class football team. “It is also a very
business-friendly city and is exactly the environment we need
to achieve our objectives in the region. We feel very comfortable
here,” he enthused.
Rossich looks forward to opportunities to collaborate with the
local community and this is something which has to evolve
organically. As the highlight in 2014 is the World Cup in Brazil, FC
Barcelona will suspend its annual summer tour but Rossich is
certain that eventually the team will visit Hong Kong.
FC Barcelona has won the UEFA Champions League, Europe’s
most prestigious competition, three times in the past decade.
Lionel Messi, a famous player in the team, received the Golden
Boot Award as Europe’s top goal scorer in the 2012/13 season.
The FC Barcelona Foundation has recently extended its alliance
with Unicef to 2016. Each year it donates €1.5 million to joint
projects with Unicef, which involve the promotion of education
and sports among vulnerable children.
