Tal y como lo anunció a través de
la canción con la que se
presentó por primera vez ante el
mundo entero a finales del 2000,
Nelly Furtado ha demostrado que,
verdaderamente, “ella es como un
ave”: su alma vuela libre a todos
lados y su hogar es el mundo
entero.
Nació en Victoria, Canadá,
de padres portugueses. Creció en
un entorno muy rico culturalmente
y muy pegado a sus raíces
raíce
portuguesas: atendía a clases de
portugués por las noches y
participaba en danzas típicas, bandas de marcha y festivales religiosos. Toda esa
immersión cultural, más la ética de trabajo que le inculcaron sus padres desde muy
pequeña, le permitió crear una
una identidad propia y empezar una fulgurante carrera
musical cuando se mudó a Toronto tras terminar la escuela. Ahí empezó a escribir sus
propias canciones cuando formó parte del dúo de hip-hop
hip hop Nelstar. Pero su carrera
abrió las alas cuando los músicos Brian
Brian West y Gerard Eaton, de la banda de funk-pop
funk
The Philosopher Kings, decidieron grabarle un demo, mismo que llegó a las manos de
la casa discográfica Dreamworks, quienes vieron el singular talento de una Nelly
Furtado todavía adolescente. Dreamworks editó su primer álbum, Whoa, Nelly! en el
año 2000. Su sonido pop multi-cultural
multi cultural resultó siendo intensamente popular ya que al
año siguiente Nelly realizó una extensa gira en toda Norteamérica gracias al éxito de
sus sencillos “I’m Like a Bird” y “Turn Off the Light”, que le merecieron varios discos de
Platino y, un año más tarde, cuatro nominaciones al Grammy, llevándose el Grammy a
la Mejor Interpretación Vocal Pop Femenino con “I’m Like a Bird”.
Su segundo trabajo discográfico, Folklore, apareció en noviembre
e del 2003, dos meses
luego que Nelly diera a luz a su hija Nevis. Para muchos, este es el álbum donde hace
gala de sus mejores vocales y donde ofreció los más variados y eclécticos sonidos en
lo que va de su carrera. Con Folklore, Nelly Furtado, llevó su música al siguiente nivel
reconfirmando su capacidad creadora y reafirmando que había llegado para quedarse.
Loose un disco
Esperó 3 años para reinventarse y en el 2006 lanza el álbum Loose,
eminentemente bailable, producido casi en su totalidad por el genio del
d beat,
Timbaland, quien junto a Nelly creó una energizante y atractiva mezcla de pop, R&B y
hip-hop
hop súper bailable que catapultó la carrera de la artista directo a los primeros
niveles de popularidad mundial. “Promiscuous”se convirtió en un hit instantáneo,
instantán
mereciéndole a Furtado el primer lugar en el Billboard Hot 100 mientras que el álbum
debutó en la cima del ranking mundial.
Habiendo cosechado innumerables logros, placas por récords de venta y
reconocimientos en todo el planeta con “Whoa, Nelly”, “Folklore”
“Folklore” y “Loose”, tres discos
en su idioma -el
el inglés, el idioma comercial del mundomundo cualquiera pensaría que, en
plena globalización, Nelly volvería con un disco que mantuviera cuidadosa y
meticulosamente su estatus de artista internacional de primer nivel
nivel por todo lo alto, es
decir, sin arriesgar nada con ideas locas como, por ejemplo, grabar un disco que no
sea en inglés ... ¿cierto? ... sí, claro.
Esta ave de la música sigue volando libre por el mundo, y ahora quiere volar cantando
su música en el idioma castellano.
Aprendió el idioma a los 14 años y desde entonces adora cantarlo. El mundo está
cambiando, y luego de 10 años grabando en inglés sintió que era el momento de
realizar su sueño de hacer un disco completamente en español para lanzarlo en todo
el mundo, dándole así intensidad e identidad a su cultura latina y a la vez dándole
sentimientos, sensaciones y ritmos al público que no entiende este idioma. Ese es su
plan, y ese plan ha resultado en el disco más pop que ha logrado hasta la fecha: Mi
Plan.
Mi Plan se convierte en su cuarto álbum y su primera colección de canciones pop en
español. No es un “álbum latino”, es el alma de esta ave musical cantándole al mundo,
pero esta vez en español. A través de la diversidad y la singularidad de su arte, las
canciones de este disco exploran temas de amor y el ritmo de cada día. Es un disco
ligero y divertido y las colaboraciones con varios artistas latinos, todos muy especiales
para ella, es lo que hacen del disco una obra verdaderamente emocionante.
Como en todos sus discos, Nelly escribió y co-produjo Mi Plan con la colaboración de
grandes escritores y productores que ella misma escogió, incluyendo a un jóven y
relativamente poco conocido compositor cubano que la impresionó mucho desde que
un amigo de ella le hizo escuchar su música. Poco después de descubrir a Alex Cuba,
este se convirtió en su brazo derecho para el proceso creativo del disco. “Yo pinto el
cuadro y él lo enmarca”, así es como describe Nelly su relación con Cuba.
El álbum refleja el gran momento por el que está pasando Nelly, una Nelly consagrada
por el éxito de sus trabajos previos y a la vez una Nelly iluminada por la gracia de ser
madre. En Mi Plan la frescura y pasión que la caracterizan se han potencializado con
las magníficas colaboraciones que ha escogido para el disco: la voz, la humildad y
entusiamo de Josh Groban en el tema “Silencio”; el espíritu sin tiempo y la elevación
de la brasilera Concha Buika en “Fuerte”; la voz y presencia de Alejandro Fernandez
en la canción “Sueños”; la audacia y magia de la composicion de Julieta Venegas junto
a la picardía y frescura de La Mala Rodriguez en el tema “Bajo Otra Luz”; la
inspiradora energía y poesía maravillosa de Juan Luis Guerra en “Como Lluvia” y el
asombroso talento compositivo y rítmico de Alex Cuba en el tema “Mi Plan”.
Los temas “Suficiente Tiempo”, “Más”, “Vacación”, “Fantasmas”, “Feliz Cumpleaños” y
el primer corte del disco “Manos al Aire” –que explora la vulnerabilidad de los
sentimientos de una persona cuando esta se encuentra en una relación íntimaconforman la colección de nuevas joyas musicales que Nelly Furtado ha creado para
el beneplácito del mundo.
Desde Canadá, con sangre portuguesa y con su voz en el idioma de Cervantes, Nelly
Furtado, el ave que cuya alma le pertenece a todas las etnias y culturas, ha vuelto con
su trabajo más pop hasta la fecha, cargado de sueños y ritmos que rinden tributo a la

BIOGRAPHY
Just like she proclaimed it
through the song that introduced
her to the world, Nelly Furtado
truly “Is Like a Bird.”
Born in Victoria, Canada, to
Portuguese descendant parents,
Nelly was raised within a
culturally rich environment, very
close to her Latin roots:
Portuguese night school,
traditional dances workshops,
marching bands, and religious
festivities were common
activities throughout her
childhood. All that cultural immersion, and the deep working ethics she learned
from her parents at an early age, helped her develop a unique identity and start
a prosperous musical career when she moved to Toronto right after finishing
high school. She started to write her own songs when she joined the hip-hop
hip
duo Nelstar, but her wings really started expanding in preparation
preparation for the big
flight when musicians Brian West and Gerard Eaton, from the funk pop band
The Philosopher Kings, decided to record a demo of Nelly’s songs that ended
up on the desks of DreamWorks Records, which quickly realized the potential of
the then teenager and released her first album, Whoa, Nelly!, in 2000.
Her multi-cultural
cultural sound proved to be intensely popular and the following year
Nelly went on an extensive headlining tour around North America, mostly
thanks to the tremendous success of singles
singles “I’m Like a Bird” and “Turn Off the
Light,” which helped the album to reach platinum status several times and also
to get four nominations at the 2002 Grammy Awards. Nelly Furtado ended up
taking the Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for “I’m Like a
Bird.”
Her second album, Folklore,
Folklore, was released on November 2003, two months after
Nelly gave birth to her daughter Nevis. For many, this is the album where she
displays her best vocals and her most eclectic sounds. With Folklore,
Folklore Nelly took
her
er musical expression to the next level, confirming her creative capacity with
songs like “Powerless (Say What You Want),” the ballad “Try” or “Força”, which
became the official anthem of the 2004 European Football Championship.
She waited 3 years to reinvent
reinvent herself in 2006 with the release of Loose, an
imminently danceable album produced almost in its entirety by beats genius
Timbaland, who, under Nelly’s inspiration, created an energizing and irresistible
mix of pop, R&B, and super danceable hip-hop

thatt catapulted her career back
to the top of the charts around the globe. “Promiscuous” became an instant hit,
earning her the number one spot at the Billboard Hot 100 while the album
debuted atop the charts upon its release.
Having harvested uncountable awards, record selling plaques and many other
accomplishments with Whoa, Nelly!, Folklore, and Loose, three albums in
English, her language –and luckily for her, the commercial language of the
world- anybody would think that, in the middle of a great globalization, Nelly
Furtado would come back with a fourth record carefully and meticulously trying
to keep her status of a top international artist and personality, without
compromising that status with a crazy idea like, say, producing an album
completely in a foreign language and releasing it worldwide… right? Yeah,
right…
This bird of music keeps flying, unrestrained, around the world, and now wants
to fly singing a whole album in Spanish.
Nelly learned Spanish at the age of 14 and she loves singing it ever since. “The
world is changing,” she says, “and after 10 years recording in English, I hit a
wall. I felt this was the moment to make the dream -of doing an album
completely in Spanish, and releasing it worldwide- come true.” She also says
that this is a way of giving intensity and identity to her Latin culture and at the
same time giving sensations, feelings and rhythms to the non-Spanish speaking
world. That was her plan, and that plan has resulted in her most pop record yet:
Mi Plan.
Mi Plan is Nelly Furtado’s fourth album and her first collection of pop songs in
Spanish. It is her soul flying like a bird and singing to the world, only this time
she is doing it in Spanish.
"I have always adored performing in both Portuguese and Spanish, which both
are
Latin languages. I can emote better in a Latin language, so the songs have
turned out more personal and intimate."
Through the diversity and singularity of her music, the songs in this album
explore around the realms of love and the rhythm of the everyday life. The
record is light and fun, and the collaboration with several Latin artists –all of
them very special to her- is what makes this album extremely exciting.
As with all her albums, Nelly wrote and co-produced Mi Plan with the
collaboration of great writers and producers that she personally chose, including
a young and little known Cuban singer-songwriter named Alex Cuba caught her
attention when a friend made her listen to his CD. Shortly after discovering his
music, Alex Cuba became her right hand during the creative process of Mi Plan.
“I paint the picture and he frames it.” That is how Nelly describes her
relationship with Cuba.
In Mi Plan, the freshness and creative passion of Nelly Furtado find a catalytic
for transcendence with the magnificent collaborations she has chosen this time:
the voice, humbleness, and enthusiasm of Josh Groban in “Silencio”; the
timeless spirit and jazz-flamenco elevation of African-Spanish Concha Buika in
the song “Fuerte”; the strong but delicate voice and presence of Mexican
crooner Alejandro Fernandez in “Sueños;” the audacity and songwriting magic
of Mexican pop star Julieta Venegas along with the coolness and wit of Spanish
hip-hop wonder La Mala Rodriguez in “Bajo Otra Luz”; the inspirational energy
and poetry of Dominican Republic’s biggest star ever, Juan Luis Guerra, who
co-wrote “Como Lluvia”; and the amazing rhythmic and melodic expression of
Cuban Alex Cuba in the song that gives the album its title.
The songs “Suficiente Tiempo”, “Más”, “Vacación”, “Fantasmas”, “Feliz
Cumpleaños”, and the first single of the album, “Manos al Aire” –song that
explores the vulnerability of a person’s feelings when one has fallen in love-,
complete the collection of new jewels Nelly Furtado has crafted in Spanish for
the whole world.
From Canada, via Portugal, through the language of Spain, Nelly Furtado
comes back with her most pop record to date, full with dreams and rhythms that
pay tribute to the beauty and cultural diversity of this planet.
The bird who does not know where its soul is has found a new home, for now.
