UBER O NO UBER; THAT’S THE QUESTION
Llevo meses quejándome del aspecto tan afeado de la entrada de
Jobos, nuestra joya turística de Pueblo. He tocado todas las
puertas municipales y las de la Asamblea Municipal también.
Y aunque siempre he visto un interés genuino por ayudar, lo
cierto es que la disposición de la basura por un restaurante de la
localidad y el camping site de un hombre enfermo y
deambulante, siempre estaban ahí para decir: bienvenidos a Jobos.
No he sido la única que ha levantado protesta, pero esa protesta
lo único que persigue es que nuestra más conocida playa se vea
como un lugar turístico, limpio y atendido
Hoy ante tanto revuelo que ha causado la presencia de Uber
en Puerto Rico, el Presidente de la Comisión de Servicio
Publico se ha expresado a través de los medios noticiosos y
redes.
Previo a discutir el tema, vamos a explicar desde mi poco
conocimiento tecnológico qué es Uber. Uber es una corporación
norteamericana que posee una aplicación que ofrece a sus
usuarios, una alternativa de transporte más económica que los
medios tradicionales de trasporte como lo son las taxis,
limusinas y algún otro tipo de transporte público. Uber provee
este tipo de servicios en 66 países y poco más de 445 ciudades.

cobros aumentan considerablemente. También está el issue de
si los conductores son o no son empleados de Uber o si por el
contrario se sostiene que son contratistas independientes. Esos
issues se encuentran ante los Tribunales en otras jurisdicciones

that I would be working here for many, many years.
I started working 20 hours a week, while also working full time
with a retail company. I remember being so anxious to finish
my retail shift and drive home to assist LEP people. These four
hours per day were so gratifying for me that I requested full
time and LLS granted me 40 hours a week, from the comfort of
my home. I am thankful for every minute that I spend on the
phone interpreting for LLS’ customers, helping people who are
struggling to be heard. Yes, I get paid to help people. Could
there be anything sweeter than this?

CLASES DE HISTORIA
Ya comienzan las clases y seguramente
estamos, padres, tíos y abuelos envueltos
en la enseñanza de los que nos van a
pasar un trapito cuando ya no podamos
hacerlo solos. Pensando en la cultura de
los nuestros y en cómo compartir y
aprender con ellos, podemos aprovechar
y preguntarle a los maestros de historia
del próximo grado cuáles son los lugares
importantes en sus clases para planificar
visitarlos. ¿No sería fascinante ver la
historia de primera mano y que nuestros
niños sepan exactamente a lo que se refiere el autor del libro?
¡Puedes hasta invitar al maestro!
Quedándonos más o menos cerquita, en América…..y no
America, meaning los Estados Unidos… tenemos muchísima
historia y lugares importantes que aún se enseñan en la escuela
intermedia y secundaria. Hay muchas cosas para hacer en todos
lugares pero tratando de irme por el lado escolar, te dejo saber
algunos lugares. Veamos…
ALASKA- Luego de ser adquirida por los Estados Unidos,
Alaska se dio a conocer por el descubrimiento de oro. Puedes
seguir la Ruta del Oro en varias excursiones. Aprovecha para ver
los glaciares, la Aurora Boreal, algún iglú y comerte un
salmoncito.
CANADA- Observa las Cataratas de Niágara desde el lado
canadiense. Es económico y relativamente cerca.

COLOMBIA- Aunque no lo creas, hay excursiones para visitar
los lugares donde Pablo Escobar vivía y trabajaba.
VENEZUELA- ¡Tan hermosa Venezuela! Que pena que no
podamos visitarla por el momento.
ECUADOR- El Ecuador, que divide los hemisferios Norte y
Sur, tiene una liniecita pintadita de amarillo en la cual te puedes
retratar con una pata en el norte y la otra en el sur. Visita
Galápagos.
PERÚ- Machu Picchu. Lleva a los nenes a ver estas increíbles
ruinas y recuerda tomarte el tecito antes de subir.
BRASIL- Corcovado, Pan de Azúcar, Brasilia, Amazona, Río.
BOLIVIA- Lago Titicaca….
CHILE, ARGENTINA, URUGUAY, PARAGUAY- Los
Andes, Iguazú

y exclusivamente fiscal y no programática. Hay una diferencia
abismal entre lo que lo que está comprometido y el uso que se
brinde a lo disponible.
Pocos son los escritos que titulamos con fechas en nuestra vida,
a excepción de las cartas y los llamados “diarios.” Las misivas,
por un lado, van debida y claramente intencionadas a terceros.
Las memorias, por otro lado, suelen ser más privadas y
personales. Pero, para los curiosos, las primeras y los segundos,
resultan ser en extremo interesantes. Tanto o más que una
anotación en calendario ajeno.
Pero hoy hay una entrada peculiar en el calendario.
Historiadores, políticos y potenciales administradores han
escrito en sus agendas: “Primer 4 de julio luego de aprobarse
Promesa.” Las implicaciones de esta pieza legislativa van más
allá de las que se pudieran analizar sobre las recientes
determinaciones del Tribunal Supremo de los Estados Unidos.
Más aun, las genuinas preocupaciones de los Jueces de dicho
foro que fueron vertidas en la argumentación oral del caso
Puerto Rico v. Sánchez Valle sobre las implicaciones de su
determinación cobran mayor vigencia en esta fecha de nuevos
tiempos. Y mientras unos aplauden las bondades y otros lloran
la rigurosidad de la pieza legislativa conocida como
PROMESA, la realidad es que la misma evoca tiempos pasados
que nos obligan a pensar en lo que se vaciará el contexto
histórico futuro.
No es descabellado preguntarse cómo es posible que los Estados
Unidos de América haga con Puerto Rico aquello que
repudiaron de Gran Bretaña. Tampoco lo es cuestionarse sobre
lo que significaría dentro de nuestra relación política el que no
hubieren intervenido. Nadie puede negar que la situación fiscal
del Gobierno de Puerto Rico ha resultado ser importante para la
Rama Legislativa y Ejecutiva de la República que comúnmente
llamamos “los Estados Unidos.” Y mientras no podemos negar
que es su Rama Judicial la que le brinda válidos fundamentos
para sus actuaciones, tampoco podemos decir que conocemos
las razones ulteriores para promover y aprobar el lenguaje de
una pieza legislativa cuya implantación e implicaciones se deja
en manos de siete individuos que interpretarán su mandato
según su conciencia, filosofía de vida e interpretación particular
que le brinden a los postulados de PROMESA. Ya veo a las
partes discutiendo y utilizando la intención y espíritu de
PROMESA como fuente de autoridad para actuar o promover
actuaciones que de otra manera se considerarían ultra vire.
Ted Kennedy decía que “en la política es como en las
matemáticas: todo lo que no es totalmente correcto, está mal.”
Por tanto, para los residentes de Puerto Rico es importante
seguir a quienes defiendan a capa y espada, en todo foro
pertinente, que la intención legislativa de PROMESA es pura y
Puerto Rico no es extraño al control federal. La mayoría de los
fondos federales que recibe la Isla conllevan restricciones
establecidas por legislación o por los planes estatales aprobados
administrativa y discrecionalmente por el poder ejecutivo.
Tampoco somos ajenos a estar sujetos a estrictos controles bajo
el palio de “asistencia técnica,” “acuerdos colaborativos” o
“task forces” como resultado de los hallazgos de las auditorías
que realiza en gobierno federal a nuestras agencias.
A lo que las generaciones más recientes sí son extrañas es a
saberse gobernados por quienes no han sido electos por el
pueblo. Por más frustrados que estén los residentes de Puerto
Rico con la manera que se han manejado las finanzas de la Isla
en sus tiempos, pocos pueden decir, tal vez por no haberse dado
cuenta, que conocen lo que es vivir bajo el yugo asfixiante de
una “comisión de ciudadanos.” Con excepción de quienes
sufrieron los embates de las actuaciones de aquél famoso “blue
ribbon committee,” ningún servidor público ha experimentado
el detallado escrutinio al que estarán expuestos pasados,
presentes y futuros funcionarios con algún poder decisional en
la Isla.
Mientras para algunos PROMESA se parece más a la Orden
General No. 8, de noviembre 4, 1898, en que quedaban vigentes
solamente aquellas leyes locales que no fueran incompatibles
con el nuevo gobierno militar, para otros es algo similar o
basado en al Acta Jones del 1917. A lo que a nadie se le ocurre
compararle es a la Ley 600. No obstante los argumentos para
favorecer una u otra línea de pensamiento, lo esencial es que en
este 4 de julio de 2016, quienes celebran haber dejado de ser
trece colonias, acaban de proclamarse ante el mundo dueños y
señores de otra. Ello nos coloca en una coyuntura histórica con
muchos precedentes que no nos hemos atrevido a emular.
Se dice que Muñoz Rivera, luego de un viaje al Distrito de
Columbia, comenzó uno de sus más sobresalientes discursos
afirmando que llegaba “de un país cuya pujanza es el asombro
del mundo.” Y mientras el propósito de PROMESA es el rescate
fiscal de un territorio cuyo manejo por las autoridades locales
han afectado a ciudadanos americanos dentro y fuera de tal
jurisdicción, la finalidad de los que quedamos en la Isla tiene
que ser deslumbrar al hoy evidentemente soberano. Para eso,
nos corresponde trabajar con mayor esmero, cuidado y atención
al detalle a nivel local, organizar y provocar movimientos
ciudadanos en el continente que impacten el mundo político y
bipartita de la capital federal y llevar un frente unido al
conglomerado de naciones que no miran para el otro lado
cuando se les confronta con la realidad de que aún existen
colonias en el mundo a pesar del nuevo

En muchas partes del mundo se ha entronizado la práctica de la

mayor parte del tempo están deñados dizques muchas veces

estamos atrás con Huber. Los taxistas lo repudian y el Gobierno

"We anticipate literally tons of abundant organic food every
year—from vegetables, fruit, nuts, legumes, fish, eggs, chicken,
small animal dairy and protein—that can continually grow and
yield in the vertical garden systems all year long as supplement
to the seasonal gardens and farming adjacent," says James
Ehrlich, CEO of ReGen Villages, the California-based developer,
which will also manage the neighborhood-slash-farm. The
company partnered with Effekt, a Danish architecture firm, on
the design.
Ehrlich, who also works as an entrepreneur-in-residence at
Stanford University and as a senior technologist there, was
inspired by a 2013 UN report, that argued for the creation of
self-sufficient communities.
In Almere, the village is likely to grow about half of the food
that the community eats—it won't grow coffee or bananas, for
example. It will also feed energy back to the local grid. But in
some locations, the company believes that the neighborhood
could be fully self-sufficient.

The community will also produce its own energy, using a mixture
of geothermal, solar, solar thermal, wind, and biomass. "We're
looking at some very interesting technologies for small-footprint
biomass that can take surrounding farm waste and turn that into
a consistent energy source in a way that can power these
communities in northern Europe even in the dead of winter,"
Ehrlich says. A smart grid will distribute power efficiently,
sending it to a carport to charge shared electric cars as needed.
A biogas plant will turn any non-compostable household waste
into power and water. A water storage system will collect
rainwater and graywater and redistribute it to seasonal gardens
and the aquaponic system.
It's the first of a network of similar communities that ReGen plans
to build around the world.
"We're really looking at a global scale," he says. "We are
redefining residential real-estate development by creating these
regenerative neighborhoods, looking at first these greenfield
pieces of farmland where we can produce more organic food,
more clean water, more clean energy, and mitigate more waste
than if we just left that land to grow organic food or do
permaculture there."
The first 100-home village is on the outskirts of Almere, a
quickly growing town 20 minutes by train from Amsterdam.
Inside Almere, the company is also building a scaled-down
version with 35 condo units. The company also has more projects
planned in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Germany, but plans
to expand everywhere. "We're really looking at starting off as

Isabela, the western -most town on the north coast, has a bundle of places and beaches to visit and surfing, a forest reserve, caves,
lakes, rivers and historical sites, are a few to mention. There’s a small bathing resort known as Guajataca on Route 113, where you
will find also El Pastillo. Next to the center of the town are Villa Pesquera and Sardinera beaches.
El Pastillo is the first beach to your right side of road 113, a small bath and is part of Royal Isabela Gulf Resort, the best and biggest
of the Caribbean. You won’t find many signs that show you which route to take; so feel free to ask neighbors. Worth to try, the food
at the Restaurant at Royal Isabela.
Once in downtown, near the Plaza, take a right to Rd. 466, and go straight to Bajuras Ward. Almost at the end of the Road is a big
complex called Isabela Beach Court. Take the road to your right where you will find a small fishing village, Villa Pesquera and the
Sardinera Beach. Villa Pesquera is a small bunch of nice-looking kiosks, where you can get some good, reasonably-priced local food,
drinks and just enjoy the area. During the week you can find some action but when it turns quite interesting is during Friday and
Saturdays nights and Sunday afternoons. There is live music, cheap food and drinks, motorcycles and locals. There are also food
kiosks and a small fish market where you’ll find the catch of the day and lobsters. Sardinera beach is a small beach suitable for
swimming, especially for children, because it is protected from most of the rough waves. The sand sometimes has trash.
Going thru Rd. 466, along the Paseo Lineal [the Walk], there is Secret Spot beach, a surfing spot . Next with a sign that shows the
unpaved entrance, the next beach is Poza de Teodoro. This is a relative small swimming hole, protected from the pounding ocean
waves and visited for local’s family gatherings. Avoid it during long weekend, lots of four tracks, people, noise and trash. It is beautiful
and you may have a great time if you visit it during the week or normal weekends.
On your way to Montones beach, you can find Middles beach, famous for the worldwide surfing competitions sponsored by the
Tourism Company and other private entities.
Montones [the rock] is great for swimming as well as snorkeling, but you should be careful for its underwater currents. In Montones
you will find Villas del Mar Hau Guest House with its beautiful beach cottages. This guest house is affordable and a great family
resort. Great sunset views from the rock.
Continuing the same road next is Jobos Beach, great for surfing but as Montones you will have to very careful because of the dangerous
underwater currents. There are some private parking lots [recommended] for an affordable fee during long weekends and summer.
Otherwise you have to park in the street. If that’s the case, don’t leave valuables in your vehicle. Next to Jobos beach is the Pozo
de Jacinto, a dangerous but beautiful blow hole worth seeing.
Out of Jobos and into Rd 466, continue straight ahead until a curve with a sign of Villa Montaña resort; make a right and continue
thru the Road. Park in the street and walk to your right where you will find Shacks beach [el Baño de los Bravo]. There is no parking,
no signals except for some sign of Villa Montaña’s Resort and of Ola Lola, a local bar. Be careful where you park and again, no
valuables in your vehicle. If you are planning to snorkel try it safely; if scuba, go to one of the local experts. This is the most spectacular
beach to snorkel. You can find lots of colored fish, manatees, squids, etc.
Aguadilla is the next town which can be accessed thru Rd 466 and make a right turn to Rd 110 which goes along what used to be
Ramey Air Force Base. Which is the best beach around? Definitely Crash Boat where you mingle with locals and can snorkel, paddle
and dive thru some ruins of a boat. Rd 110 is the gastronomic Road of Aguadilla. In Aguadilla you can go to Las Cascadas
Amusement Park in Rd No 2, Los Chorritos in Ramey or simply take a walk thru Paseo Marina Real where you can find a bundle
of gastronomic kiosks along the bay and watch the sunsets while sipping a Margarita or a Mojito.
There is a great variety of restaurants in and around Isabela: Puerto Rican, seafood, Asian, Mexican and international cuisine.
Remember: eating and drinking water in Puerto Rico are safe.

going up, but comparing average cruise costs to $9,000 a month
assisted living fees is misleading and inaccurate. According to

average monthly cost of assisted living ranges from $2,500
to $4,600. There’s considerable variation, too, depending on
where seniors live and what amenities they need.
If your loved one wants a large two-bedroom apartment, for
instance, it’s going to cost more, but there are always lower-cost
options such as a studio or shared living space. And remember
that the cost of living varies widely depending on where in the

presumably it’s a bit tricky to get insurance to cover a cruise. As
for the Towne Place Suites in Falls Church, VA, though you get
free wi-fi for your trouble, the cost is now about $148 a night
with a senior discount: almost $4,500 per month. Although other
hotels are considerably less expensive – depending, of course,
on location – there’s still the fact that most meals aren’t included
and you’d be without 24-hour trained senior living personnel.
It’s important to note that not all types of senior housing are
created equal. Life on a cruise ship might compare favorably to
expensive dull nursing homes portrayed in popular media, but
the reality is quite different, and in fact, luxury senior housing
and retirement communities offer many of the same perks that a
cruises ship do: entertainment, chances to socialize, and
customized senior nutrition, to name just a few. And they aren’t
as expensive as you might think. Nursing homes and memory
care, which provide skilled nursing on a 24-hour basis, are the
pricier options. But for seniors who don’t need constant care,
retirement communities and independent living are far less
expensive – and yes, they generally cost less than a hotel or a
cruise: sometimes as little as $1,500 a month.
Impractical Realities
The logistics of living permanently on a cruise ship seem more
than a little impractical. First of all, you can’t bring more much
more than a suit case worth of possessions on a cruise. You can
forget about packing your favorite sitting chair or a painting. That
issue aside, it’s not as if one could just move on to a cruise ship
and live happily ever after. Passengers must disembark when the
cruise ends, and make arrangements while the ship is at port. BY: CHRISTIE LYNN
Keeping these temporary arrangements month after month would
be more than burdensome. Another consideration is that seniors
who move to assisted living facilities and nursing homes require
help with activities of daily living such as bathing, toileting,
dressing, and grooming. Yes, you may be able to get breakfast
in bed on a cruise ship or hotel, but the staff is not prepared or
able to help provide hands-on personal care.
Health Risks for Seniors on Cruise Ships
Furthermore, many seniors have a high-risk of falling because of
mobility problems. A cruise ship certainly wouldn’t be the best
living environment such a person, as even very large ships can
list violently in bad weather.
Cost is not the only factor in making a decision about senior
living, particularly for those who might want to stay close to
family and friends, or who might have care needs requiring
skilled nursing. Cecil Adams, author of the newspaper column
“The Straight Dope,” points out that “the elderly are going to
have a lot more medical issues than cruise ships are set up to
handle.” And while there is such a thing as a hotel doctor, they
generally don’t live on-site, but rather make potentially costly
house calls. Not only that,

include geriatric specialists. Cecil points out: “If an emergency

I don’t think losing your mom is something anyone could
ever prepare you for. Even if someone has been through it,
I think it’s hard to emotionally prepare someone for the life
altering tragedy they are about to experience.
When my mom was sick I reached out to just about
everyone I knew who had lost a parent. I wanted to know
as much as possible about what I would soon be dealing
with. Even with all of that support, there is so much stuff
you just can’t be prepared for.
Nobody tells you about the emptiness you’ll feel late at
night
Nobody could prepare you for, or explain what it feels like
late at night when you’re alone in bed wanting nothing more
than to call your mom. It’s a feeling of absolutely emptiness,
absolute loss and pure devastation. It’s a feeling you can’t
put into words for someone.
Nobody tells you about the rollercoaster that grief is
Nobody can explain the way grief really has no end. You
think it’s done. You think the storm is over. Well, the littlest
thing can send you right back down the rollercoaster
tarnishing every bit of progress you have made.
Nobody tells you how escalated every bad thing that
happens is
Nobody could explain how much worse things hurt without
your mom. Nobody could explain the feeling that the entire
world is against you and how angry you are that you already
have lost your mom, and now are going through this too.
Everything is escalated. Everything seems worse.
Everything has become so unfair.
Nobody tells you what it feels like the first time you go
to call your mom… and every time after.
Nobody could explain the gut-wrenching feeling when you

happened that day. Only to realize that she is in fact gone,
or even that the number has been disconnected. This doesn’t
get easier the second or third times either…
Nobody tells you what it feels like to watch your closest
family member break down and cry
Nobody could explain what I would feel when I watched
my dad completely break down and lose it for the first time.
Nobody could have prepared me for that. No part of my life
or background could have provided me enough experience
to know what to do. The only way I could explain itcomplete loss.
Nobody tells you what it feels like to be different
For the first time in your life maybe, you are different. You
have gone through something so many people around you
haven’t. You feel different everywhere you go. You feel
different in many conversations. Your life is no longer the
same and there is nothing you can do.
However, although you are different, you are not alone.
