RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT
At last! The power hinted at and the
Spirit promised are unleashed on this holy
day. We call it the birthday of the church.
Try to listen to today’s scripture passages
with some sense of how electrifying these
events must have been to those who lived
through them. Up until now, they have been waiting in the upper
room. In today’s first reading, that room is filled with wind and
fire and bold proclamations in foreign tongues.
In the second reading, Paul describes the Pentecost event,
too. His description includes all of us. The Spirit lives on in the
church in each of us who are members of the Body of Christ,
given different gifts from the same Spirit. Only after Pentecost
could the apostles look back and understand what Jesus meant
when he said, as reported in today’s Gospel reading, “Receive
the Holy Spirit.”

ST. MICHAEL CHURCH
PARADISE HILLS, SAN DIEGO
PASTOR’S MESSAGE
Dear Parishioners and friends,
Fr. Marcelino, Fr. Bernard and I thank all of you for celebrating with us the
anniversary of our ordination to the priesthood. We thank you for your support and
your love. We ask you to continue praying for us, priests, and for more vocation.
In the succeeding issues of our weekly bulletin, I would like to share with you the
teachings of the Catholic Church about the priest and the priesthood.
THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY ORDERS — Part I (from the Catechism of the Catholic Church)
In Roman times, ordination incorporated a person into an order, an established governing body. Catholic
Tradition, with basis in Scripture, has three orders: bishops, priests, and deacons.
In the Church, people entered these orders by a liturgical ordination rite. Today ordination is used only of
the order of bishops, priests, and deacons.
By ordination, the Spirit bestows a sacred power which comes from Christ through His Church. Ordination
(also called consecration—”setting apart”) is conferred by the bishop’s laying on of hands and the consecratory
prayer. (CCC, 1537-1538)
The Priesthood of the Old Testament. The chosen people was constituted by God as “a kingdom of priests
and a holy nation,” But within the people of Israel, God chose one of the twelve tribes, the tribe of Levi, and set it
apart for liturgical service. By a special rite of consecration, they were “appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices for
sin.” (Heb 5:1). This priesthood remains powerless to achieve definitive salvation which is accomplished only by
Christ’s sacrifice. (CCC, 1549-1540)
Prefiguring Christ’s Priesthood. Catholic liturgy sees in the priesthood of Aaron and the service of the
Levites, as in the institution of the seventy elders, a prefiguring of the ordained ministry of the New Covenant. Thus
in the Latin Rite the Church prays—
1. In the consecratory paragraph for bishops: “...You established rulers and priests and did not leave your
sanctuary without ministers to serve.”
2. At the ordination of priests: “...You extended the spirit of Moses to seventy wise men. You shared among
the sons of Aaron the fullness of their father’s power.”
3. For ordination of deacons, the Church confesses: “...As ministers of your tabernacle you chose the sons
of Levi and gave them your blessing as their everlasting inheritance.” (CCC, 1541-1543)

Blessings from St. Michael Academy to the St. Michael Parish Community!
The end is in sight; the end of the school year, that is! The students of St. Michael Academy are about to
enter the last week of the academic year. During this week, we look forward to sharing time with family and
friends at our annual day at Rohr Park, the graduation of our 8th grade students, exchange grade day,
packing up, cleaning out, and celebrating our last all-school Liturgy of the year. I think we can all relate to a
child's dreams of what adventures summer might hold; that is, until reality sets in and Mom and Dad hand out
the ‘To Do’ list!
Have you considered enrolling your child in an academically rigorous Catholic value based school? We would like to share
with you the benefits of enrolling your child in St. Michael Academy. We are a Kindergarten through 8th Grade school.
Please call the office and schedule a tour of the Academy. Give us an opportunity to show you how the cost of your child’s
Catholic education can fit into your budget. Call 619 470-4880, or e-mail Mrs. Lewis (Office Manager) at
[email protected]. Fr. Manny offers a $1000 discount to new families enrolling in the Academy.
Yours in Christ,
Mary Johnson, Principal
What does my Catholic education mean to me? Catholic education is a privilege not many people receive. It is something most
of us take for granted. It gives us the religious freedom to express our love for God. It allows us to truly understand our religion.
Catholic education prepares us to live holy lives.
In school, we pray in the morning, before meals, and before we leave at the end of the day. We also have Mass every Wednesday.
We are given the opportunity to express our gratitude toward God every single day we go to school. We also have religion class
when we learn more about our religion. Not a lot of schools give students this kind of religious freedom.
Catholic education has been part of my life for several years now. It has given me so many opportunities to appreciate my religion. It
has affected me in a positive way. I have learned a lot from Catholic education. It has made me a better person in so many ways.
Thank you. - Gerome

“Give to the Lord the glory due His name; Adore the Lord
in holy attire.” Psalm 29:2
Saint Michael the Archangel,
Our dignity as baptized children of God - "For all of you who were
baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ." [Gal 3:27]
defend us in battle. Be our
protection against the wickedness and
snares of the devil. May God rebuke
him, we humbly pray; and do Thou,
O Prince of the Heavenly Host - by the
Divine Power of God - cast into hell,
Satan and all the evil spirits, who roam
throughout the world seeking the ruin
of souls. Amen.
