DID YOU KNOW? Help your children be aware of other children’s or adults’ unhealthy behavior Children do, in fact, offend against other children. This issue is not unique to a particular season. However, children may have more opportunities to be out of your immediate sight during the summer. For this reason, it’s important to periodically remind your child that another child or adult --- even a child or adult they know and trust, may want to see or touch their private parts; try to touch their private parts; or want to show them their (the other person’s) private parts. Tell your child that if one of these situations occurs, your child should say: “Stop it!” and should immediately tell you what happened. Furthermore, catechesis is the responsibility of the entire Christian Community. Through it’s worship and action the beliefs of the community become visible. The GDC also tells us that Catechesis integrates the richness of ethnic and cultural realities, which are compatible with the Gospel and in communion with the universal Church and seek to transform those, which are not. (GDC 41, 85-86, 220) At St. Andrew, our entire Department of Religious Education is built on the aforementioned fundamentals to support the teachings of the GDC. As we looked at the needs of our department and parish for preparing the children for their sacraments built on these fundamentals, we realized the need to adopt a new curriculum. After careful scrutiny we are excited to present the new St. Andrew Religious Education curriculum we will commence using this upcoming year. We enthusiastically chose the Finding God series from Loyola Press which is an approved series by the Los Angeles Diocese. The Finding God series is a faith formation program that fosters a lifelong relationship with God by engaging children in the full and authentic teachings of the Catholic Church. With exploration of scripture, church tradition, and prayer integrated into every session, children learn the fundamentals of our Catholic faith. Through active-learning strategies that serve a variety of learning styles, children will participate, learn, and grow in knowledge, faith, and discipleship. The Finding God curriculum is accompanied with a wealth of resources for both families and catechists. The abundant support for parents and their children can be found in family newsletters, online resources, and prayer books. Catechists can go online for supplemental materials or access assessments and activities. Students can use apps to supplement their workbooks. Exploring faith through art prints, that are included in the program, provide a multi sensory approach to faith formation. As a director, I have support from the publisher and access to a myriad of additional training materials. The curriculum is very complete! We are very excited for our new program to begin in September and look forward to bringing the children of St. Andrew closer to our God and community. There are a limited amount of spaces left, so if you have not registered please do so immediately in the Pastoral Center during business hours.
