Great coverage for the FIBA Americas Championship:
Carlos Morales and Alvaro Martín: commentator and narrator of
ESPN who are transmitting the games in English live for FIBA.
The 2009 FIBA Americas Championship is receiving a great coverage, reaching
all parts of the World in different types of communication.
By TV a total of 84 countries in five continents are receiving the live signal of the
games via satellite.
In Puerto Rico all games are live in WIPR where the fans can see all the games
live on antenna, satellite or cable tv for the first time in history of sports events
held in the island. Ralph Pagán, Héctor Meléndez and Ernesto Díaz González call
the play by play; Ángel López Panelli, Tony Ruiz and Rolando Hourruitiner are the
color commentators. FIBA Americas and FIBA united to transmit all the games
live on the Internet at www.fibaamericastv.com to reach all parts of the
World. The four games are divided between Alan Obrador, Alvaro Martín
and Carlos Morales, the last two are regulars of ESPN.
Martin is a columnist and analyst of ESPN and Morales is the former
Puerto Rican national team head coach and is an NBA commentator. They
form a duo with a lot of experience and knowledge of this tournament.
They are transmitting FIBA for the first time to the rest of the World,
commentating in English for the first time especially to many European
countries who are following this tournament prior to the Eurobasket to be
played on September 7.
Morales has seen a lot of progress compared to the 2007 tournament in
Las Vegas, especially by Puerto Rico and Brazil who finished third and fourth,
respectively.
"The tournament in Las Vegas had the United States team that won Gold
one year later in the Olympics but in this tournament there is a good level
of play and the teams of Brazil and Puerto Rico have progressed in the last
two years," said Morales who won two titles in Puerto Rico with Atleticos
de San German.
About the progress in the Puerto Rican team, Morales explained that it
is because of their defense.
"Puerto Rico is a team that is focusing on defense because in the last
couple of years they were just an offensive minded team. Now they are a
focused team on defense and are playing half court offense."
The radio is also in the tournament having stations from Argentina,
Uruguay, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.
The tournament is also receiving full coverage with stats and news on
puertorico2009.fibaamericas.com where over 50,000 fans visit daily and
the number will improve in the semifinals and finals.

In 2003 on a survey done by O Estado de Sao Paulo newspaper they
declared Amaury Dos Pasos the best Brazilian player of all time after
playing in many great tournament and also because of his humility.
Amaury Dos Pasos, was not only king of a great period in Brazilian
basketball, but also led his team to two World Championships in 1959 and
1963 along with Wlamir Marques, Ubiratán Maciel, Rosa Branca and
Antonio Sucar, among other under the direction of Togo Renan, known as
Kanela.

He was 6'6" tall and he could play center and forward. He was also a
great defender and scorer shown in his individual attack.
Dos Passos, who is bald since his mid 20's, recognized that they won
Gold in Chile because the favorite, the Soviet Union didn't want to play
against China and they were penalized with a loss.
When he was 67 years old, he participated in the Masters competitions
with the same quality as before.

Carmelo Lee is the Puerto Rican version
of John Salley, who won two NBA titles
with the Detroit Pistons and nicknamed

national team being a defensive
specialist.
Lee, who is 32 years old and 6'7",

before Puerto Rico with Gallitos de
Isabela. He is now gaining playing time
and prominence with head coach
Manolo Cintron as he did before with
Julio Toro.

1995 and then moved to Long Beach
State until he reached the Mexican
league first with Leñadores de Durango
and then Cometas de Queretaro where
he averaged 18.4 points and 6.1 in 2004.
