The Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary
On October 7, the Roman Catholic Church celebrates the yearly feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Known
for several centuries by the alternate title of “Our Lady of Victory,” the feast day takes place in honor of a
16th century naval victory which secured Europe against Turkish invasion. Pope St. Pius V attributed the
victory to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who was invoked on the day of the battle through a
campaign to pray the Rosary throughout Europe.
The feast always occurs one week after the similar Byzantine celebration of the Protection of the Mother
of God, which most Eastern Orthodox Christians and Eastern Catholics celebrate on October 1 in memory
of a 10th-century military victory which protected Constantinople against invasion after a reported Marian
apparition.
Pope Leo XIII was particularly devoted to Our Lady of the Rosary, producing 11 encyclicals on the subject
of this feast and its importance in the course of his long pontificate.
In the first of them, 1883's “Supremi Apostolatus Officio,” he echoed the words of the oldest known Marian
prayer (known in the Latin tradition as the “Sub Tuum Praesidium”), when he wrote, “It has always been
the habit of Catholics in danger and in troublous times to fly for refuge to Mary.”
“This devotion, so great and so confident, to the august Queen of Heaven,” Pope Leo continued, “has
never shone forth with such brilliancy as when the militant Church of God has seemed to be endangered
by the violence of heresy … or by an intolerable moral corruption, or by the attacks of powerful enemies.”
Foremost among such “attacks” was the battle of Lepanto, a perilous and decisive moment in European
and world history.
Troops of the Turkish Ottoman Empire had invaded and occupied the Byzantine empire by 1453, bringing
a large portion of the increasingly divided Christian world under a version of Islamic law. For the next
hundred years, the Turks expanded their empire westward on land, and asserted their naval power in the
Mediterranean. In 1565 they attacked Malta, envisioning an eventual invasion of Rome. Though repelled
at Malta, the Turks captured Cyprus in the fall of 1570.
The next year, three Catholic powers on the continent – Genoa, Spain, and the Papal States - formed an
alliance called the Holy League, to defend their Christian civilization against Turkish invasion. Its fleets
sailed to confront the Turks near the west coast of Greece on October 7, 1571.
Crew members on more than 200 ships prayed the Rosary in preparation for the battle - as did Christians
throughout Europe, encouraged by the Pope to gather in their churches to invoke the Virgin Mary against
the daunting Turkish forces.
Some accounts say that Pope Pius V was granted a miraculous vision of the Holy League's stunning
victory. Without a doubt, the Pope understood the significance of the day's events, when he was
eventually informed that all but 13 of the nearly 300 Turkish ships had been captured or sunk. He was
moved to institute the feast now celebrated universally as Our Lady of the Rosary.
“Turkish victory at Lepanto would have been a catastrophe of the first magnitude for Christendom,” wrote
military historian John F. Guilmartin, Jr., “and Europe would have followed a historical trajectory strikingly
different from that which obtained.”

DIVINE MERCY DEVOTION
Holy Hour is observed every Friday from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in the
Chapel, including intercessory Prayer, Divine Mercy Chaplet,
Stations of the Cross, Consecration Prayer, and a Rosary.
Divine Mercy is prayed every day at 3:00 pm the chapel.
“Your task is to write down everything that I make known to you about My
mercy for the benefit of those who by reading these things will be comforted
in their souls and will have the courage to approach Me.” (Diary, 1693)
From the Diary of St. Faustina
Open Your Heart
Tell souls not to place within their own hearts obstacles to
My mercy, which so greatly wants to act within them. My
mercy works in all those hearts which open their doors
to it. Both the sinner and the righteous person have need
of My mercy. Conversion, as well as perseverance, is a grace
of My mercy. (Diary #1577)
For more information on the Divine Mercy Devotions,
please contact Maria Beck at 832-618-0726.
Mass Intention Requests
Intentions are available on a first come first served basis. Please come to the office and
complete a request form. Sorry, no intentions can be accepted over the phone. An
offering of $5 is requested for the priest celebrating the Mass. Please include full names
so that the presider may be sure to properly announce the intention. We also need your
name and phone number. Intentions are most often for the deceased, but can also be for
the living, i.e. birthday blessings, anniversaries, or in thanksgiving. Questions?

Stop Federal Funding
of Planned Parenthood
The release of undercover videos showing a willingness by Planned
Parenthood officials to traffic in fetal organs and tissue has quite properly
stirred strong reactions in Congress and the general public. A bill “To
prohibit Federal funding of Planned Parenthood Federation of America”
was introduced in both House and Senate (S. 1881, H.R. 3301).
Consideration of the Senate bill was blocked but can be brought up
again. Please contact your Senators and Representative today!
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
1. Send e-mails through NCHLA’s Human Life Action Center.
nchla.org/actiondisplay.asp?ID=319
Note: Messages to Senators will thank those who voted for S. 1881
and ask Senators who voted against S. 1881 to reconsider their position.
Messages to your Representative will ask support for H.R. 3301. Based
on your ZIP code, the Action Center e-mail system will automatically
select the correct messages for your Senators and Representatives. As
always, you can add your own comments.
2. Contact your Representative and Senators by phone. Call the U.S.
Capitol switchboard at: 202-224-3121, or call your Members’ local offices.
Additional contact info can be found on Members’ web sites at:

CHAPTER ONE
IN THE LIGHT OF THE WORD
YOUR CHILDREN ARE
AS THE SHOOTS OF AN OLIVE TREE
14. The Psalmist says that in the home where husband and wife
are seated at table, children appear at their side “like olive
shoots” full of energy and vitality. The children are like the “living
stones” of the family. The most often used Old Testament word
“child” (ben) is related to the verb “to build” (banah). Hence,
Psalm 128 uses imagery drawn from the building of a house and
the social life of cities: “Unless the Lord builds the house, those
who build it labor in vain. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior
are the sons of one’s youth. Happy is the man who has his
quiver full of them!” The presence of children is a sign of the
continuity of the family in salvation history.
15. The New Testament speaks of “churches that meet in
homes.” A family’s living space could turn into a domestic
church, a setting for the Eucharist, the presence of Christ seated
at its table. In the Book of Revelation the Lord says, “Behold, I
stand at the door and knock; if any one hears my voice and
opens, I will come in to him and eat with him.” Here we see a
home filled with the presence of God, common prayer and every
blessing.
16. The Bible also presents the family as the place where
children are brought up in the faith. One of the Psalms
celebrates the proclamation of faith within families: “All that we
have heard and known, that our fathers have told us, we will not
hide from their children. …He established a testimony in Jacob,
and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers
to teach to their children.” The family is the place where parents
are the children’s first teachers in the faith. They learn this
“trade,” passing it down from one person to another.
17. Parents have a serious responsibility for this work of
education, as the Bible often remind us. Children are called to
accept and practice the commandment: “Honor your father and
your mother.” “Whoever honors his father atones for sins, and
whoever glorifies his mother is like one who lays up treasure.”
18. The Gospel reminds us that children are not the property of
a family¸ but have their own lives. Jesus is a model of
obedience to his earthly parents, but he also shows that
children’s vocation may demand a parting for the sake of the
Kingdom of God (Lk 9:59-62).
