EL RINCON DEL PADRE February 10, 2016 is Ash Wednesday. As we begin the season of Lent, we mark our foreheads with ashes. We proclaim our need for God’s compassion. We promise to ‘Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel.’ The Catholic Church asks each member of the faithful to preserve the penitential character and purpose of Lent. For this reason: a) Catholics who have celebrated their 14th birthday are bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and each Friday of Lent; b) Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday, in addition to abstaining from meat, should fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Hence, on those days they should eat only one full meal. Smaller quantities of food may be taken at two other meals, but no food should be consumed at other times during those two days. The obligation of fasting ceases with the celebration of one’s 59th birthday. I would also encourage you to take part in the different opportunities for prayer that are offered in our parish. Daily Mass is a wonderful way to express our desire to walk closely with the Lord during this season. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is held 24 hours in the chapel. Stations of the Cross are prayed on Fridays at 6:00 PM in English and at 7:30 PM in Spanish. The Sacrament of Reconciliation also provides a renewal of faith and extraordinary sense of strength during this season. Confessions are heard on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 6:15-7PM & Saturdays at 3:30-4:45PM. There will also be a Communal Reconciliation Service schedule later. Please stay tune. Let us open our hearts to Jesus’ presence in our midst and unite ourselves to Him and one another even more closely in this season of Lent and in this year of Mercy. A blessed and grace-filled Lent to all of you! Fr. Pd.Hai ST. This Jubilee indulgence can be gained once a day for oneself or for someone who has died. The Holy Father has stated that, in order to receive this Jubilee Indulgence, this passage through a Holy Door must be linked with saying the Profession of Faith, praying for the Holy Father and his intentions, and going to a celebration of the Eucharist and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The March 12th Mass at St. Theresa's in Sugar Land is a Legion of Mary gathering & all are welcome. It will be a wonderful celebration.
