EL RINCON DEL PADRE
February 10, 2016 is Ash Wednesday. As we begin the season of Lent, we mark our foreheads with ashes. We proclaim our need for
God’s compassion. We promise to ‘Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel.’
The Catholic Church asks each member of the faithful to preserve the penitential character and purpose of Lent. For this reason:
a) Catholics who have celebrated their 14th birthday are bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and each Friday of Lent;
b) Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday, in addition to abstaining from meat, should fast on Ash Wednesday and Good
Friday. Hence, on those days they should eat only one full meal. Smaller quantities of food may be taken at two other meals, but no
food should be consumed at other times during those two days. The obligation of fasting ceases with the celebration of one’s 59th
birthday.
I would also encourage you to take part in the different opportunities for prayer that are offered in our parish.
Daily Mass is a wonderful way to express our desire to walk closely with the Lord during this season. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is held 24 hours in the chapel. Stations of the Cross are prayed on Fridays at 6:00 PM in English and at 7:30 PM in Spanish. The
Sacrament of Reconciliation also provides a renewal of faith and extraordinary sense of strength during this season. Confessions are
heard on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 6:15-7PM & Saturdays at 3:30-4:45PM. There will also be a Communal Reconciliation Service schedule later. Please stay tune.
Let us open our hearts to Jesus’ presence in our midst and unite ourselves to Him and one another even more closely in this season of
Lent and in this year of Mercy. A blessed and grace-filled Lent to all of you!

that a Holy Door be opened at the following churches, which will serve also as pilgrimage sites during the Holy Year:
St. Mary's Cathedral Basilica (Holy Family Parish, 2011 Church St, Galveston TX 77550)
Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart (1111 St. Joseph Parkway, Houston)
St. Bernadette Church (15500 El Camino Real, Houston TX, 77062)

St. Ignatius Church (7810 Cypresswood Dr, Spring TX, 77379)
St. Theresa Church (705 St. Theresa Blvd, Sugar Land TX, 77498)
Pilgrims who pass through this ‘Door of Mercy' at any of the above designated churches receive the Jubilee Indulgence. This Jubilee indulgence can be gained once a day for oneself or for someone who has died. The Holy Father has stated that, in order to receive this Jubilee Indulgence, this passage through a Holy Door must be linked with saying the Profession of Faith, praying for the Holy Father and his intentions, and going to a celebration of the Eucharist and the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
The March 12th Mass at St. Theresa's in Sugar Land is a Legion of Mary gathering & all are welcome.
It will be a wonderful celebration.

CHILDRENS CORNER:
"Protecting God's Children's" is the program selected
by the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston to educate
clergy, staff, and volunteers who work with children
and youth about child sexual abuse and the ways to
create a safe environment for children.
St. Thomas More Leaders of a ministry, group and
organization that have at least one minor (17 or
younger) involved or come in contact with children and youth need to take VIRTUS Training.
This includes events such as: Easter egg hunts,
Santa Clause Breakfasts, Mission trips and retreats. We want to make sure that our parish leaders, volunteers and those involved are in compliance with the Archdiocese.
All volunteers that have taken Protecting Gods Children 5 years ago or more need to take Keeping the
Promise Alive (KPA) as soon as they can. Those that
have not taken Virtus training, need to attend Virtus
training as soon as possible to continue their involvement in the wonderful ministries and groups of St.
Thomas More.
