Notes from the classroom
Kindergarten
During December we will be hard at work! Continuing to practice our sight
words will help us to become even better readers and writers. In reading, we are working on
using pictures to predict words in the sentence. We are also practicing using the beginning
sounds to sound out words while we read. In writing we are working on writing our words with
the correct beginning and ending sounds. We are working on writing our sight words correctly in
our stories so we can read our own writing. During math time, we are beginning to combine
numbers and look for combinations to make numbers. To help us at home please practice
reading and writing sight words, counting to 50, and writing the beginning sounds in the words
we say. As the weather gets colder please remember to send your child with warm clothing to
wear for outdoor recess. Writing your child’s name on the tag of all coats, mittens, hats,
scarves, and any other cold weather attire is very helpful when it gets lost. Thanks for your
support.
1st Grade
Happy Holidays! First grade students are working hard to meet proficiency goals
for second quarter. Our reading target level for this quarter is a Level G to show proficiency.
This includes both accuracy and comprehension. We understand this is a busy time of year and
appreciate you taking time to have your child read nightly at home. We are concluding our
informational writing unit. We are pleased to see our students increase their ability to write
several sentences about a single topic. Our next unit in math will teach students how to conduct
a survey and make an accurate representation of their data. We will also begin measurement
before Christmas break and continue it into January. We began our science unit about Insects
with our field trip to the Butterfly Pavilion and will finish this science unit before we leave on
Winter Break. Due to unforeseeable weather changes, please keep a jacket in your child’s
backpack so they will be prepared for outdoor recess. We are thankful for your support at home
and hope that you and your family have a wonderful holiday season.
2nd Grade
Second grade students have been working on addition and subtraction story
problems in math. We are also working on recognizing how many tens and ones are represented
in a number. For example, in the number 12 there is one ten and 2 leftovers (ones). Please work
with your child at home on word problems and place value. In reading, we are working with
small groups to meet individual needs. In whole group instruction we will be focusing on
determining important information and text features of both fiction and non-fiction passages. At
home, make sure your child is reading just-right books so that they can practice what they are
learning in school. In science we are currently working on plants and your child’s plant is
growing nicely! We have just finished working on How-To texts in writing and we will be working
on non-fiction paragraph writing and writing to a prompt in the upcoming weeks ahead.
3rd Grade As the snow begins to fall, December is a busy month for third graders.
We just
finished a very long math unit on addition and subtraction. Students will still need to practice
their computation skills at home! We are now working on angles, perimeter, and area. They are
enjoying working on their first research report. Their reports will include an introduction, three or
more headings, and several fun non-fiction features of their choice. It is exciting to watch the
students explore and discuss their topics. For social studies, we are studying why a community’s
history is important, and how a community is shaped by its history. The final part of our science
unit is all about ants! The third graders are observing an ant farm, and learning about how ants
use what is around them to help them build and maintain their habitat. The third grade teachers
would like to wish all of our students and their families a wonderful and restful holiday season.
4th Grade
Can you believe December is already here? Fourth grade has begun many new
units of study. Students have been working to apply their understanding of geometric terms to
describe two dimensional objects. In writing, students are working to complete their fictional
stories and using paragraphs in their writing in ways they have seen it used in their fictional
reading. In science, we have concluded our unit on environments. Students enjoyed
experimenting with their classroom terrarium environments. We will be learning more details
about the Western Region of the United States, which includes our own state of Colorado. As
we move through December, please continue reading with your child and asking them questions
about their reading. They should be recording their reading homework on their weekly organizer
daily. We also encourage you to continue working with your child on knowing their multiplication
and division facts.
5th Grade
We can’t believe eleven twelfths of 2013 is now behind us. Do you know what
percent that is? Ask your kids. We are in the process of completing our unit on fractions and
percents. Before we are done, we will be multiplying and dividing with fractions. We are finishing
our writing in the fiction genre. This genre has us looking at character development. We have
also been working on summarizing a variety of texts. In reading, we are continuing our work on
inferring, as well indentifying theme. In our “Living Systems” science unity we will be developing
our understandings about how all organisms have structures and systems with separate
functions. The fifth grade teachers want to wish you a peaceful holiday season.
Diverse Learning Classrooms – Mrs. Hernandez and Ms. Nelson
This month we will be learning about different holiday traditions around the world. Students will
be practicing money skills by shopping for the holidays. We will read leveled and easy read
books about Christmas, Kwanzaa, Las Posadas, and Hanukkah and students will work toward
increasing comprehension. Students will also be practicing number sense, graphing, and journal
writing concepts throughout the month of December, all with a holiday twist!

 Congratulations to our 3rd and 5th grade students on amazing performances in November!
You practiced and prepared very hard, and you looked and sounded great!
 ATTENTION 3rd & 5th grade students! You are going to be working on a recorder unit
immediately following winter break. If you do not have a personal recorder to use and wish
to purchase one, orders for the instruments will be DUE on Friday, December 13. Order
forms/letters are available in the music room. Cost is $5.00 for the recorder and an
additional $1.00 IF a neck strap is ordered with the instrument. Recorders and neck straps
come in a variety of colors, and students will be able to request the color they wish to have.
Recorders should arrive some time DURING winter break and will be distributed upon
students’ return to school.
 VASSAR CHOIR – open to all 2nd-5th grade students – will be starting, also, after winter break.
It will be starting the week of January 13, 2014, and will meet before school from 8:00-8:40
on Mondays and Thursdays in the music room.
 Looking ahead: 2nd and 4th grade students will be performing their grade level programs in
April, after spring break (in case you were wondering…). More information will be coming as
these events get closer.

Kinder – 2nd
In physical education students have been practicing several loco-motor skills as well as ways to
move a ball. We have been working on the correct form for rolling, tossing, throwing, kicking and
punting. Students have been practicing these skills and applying them in small-sided games where they
are also working on spatial awareness. We will be moving towards using a manipulative to move objects.
We have been learning about different parts of the body and what the body is composed of such as
water, bones, skin, organs and muscles. Please talk to your child(ren) about the different things that
make up the human body.
3rd – 5th
In physical education students are finishing up a hockey and baseball/football unit in November.
We will be practicing dance skills and rhythm in December and will then transfer over to tumbling,
climbing in Jan next year. We continue to learn about healthy food choices and the positive impact that
exercise has on the body. Please talk to your child(ren) about the importance of healthy food choices and
exercise.
Y-TIES ARE BACK
We will be selling Y-Ties again this year in December as a fundraiser to raise money for new
equipment for the physical education program. Y-Ties are shoelaces that the kids can put in their shoes
that allow them to just pull the lace instead of tying them. They come in several colors and are excellent
stocking stuffer gifts. Your child will bring home some information about Y-Ties in early December. This
fundraiser will only last a few weeks and supplies are limited.
Art News
Mrs. Johnson
Many classes will be working on clay projects throughout the month of December in art.
Clay is a favorite medium for students allowing them to create something that they can
treasure for years to come. Fifth grade is finishing a unit on how to draw one-point
perspective landscapes using rulers for measurement. Fourth grade worked with clay to
create a fish and then glazed them. Third grade is completing a unit on castles and
dragons and learned how to create texture using salt and watercolor paints. Second
grade has been working with India Ink to create Sumi-e style paintings of animals and
plants. First grade started a unit about the history of cows in art and are creating their
own cow with torn paper. Kindergarten has been practicing shapes by drawing and
painting them.

On December 19th all classrooms will have a Winter Holiday Party.
1st grade – 5th Grade parties will be held from 2:40 - 3:10 p.m.
Kindergarten will hold their parties before Specials time, 1:40 - 2:25 p.m.
PTA will provide some healthy snacks and craft items. Parents may
bring store bought treats only, nothing homemade is allowed at school
per school board policy. Teachers will send home more information
about what they may need for the party.

Durante diciembre estaremos trabajando duro! Continuaremos con la práctica de nuestras
palabras comunes, esto nos ayudará a ser mejores lectores y escritores. En la lectura, estamos
trabajando sobre el uso de imágenes para predecir palabras en la oración. También estamos practicando
los sonidos de las palabras mientras leemos. En la escritura estamos trabajando en escribir nuestras
palabras con el sonido correcto al comienzo y al final. Estamos trabajando en escribir correctamente
nuestras palabras comunes en nuestras historias así podemos leer nuestra propia escritura. Durante el
tiempo de las matemáticas, estamos empezando a combinar números y buscar combinaciones para
formar números. Para ayudarnos en casa por favor practique la lectura y escriban palabras comunes,
contando hasta 50 y los sonidos iniciales de las palabras que decimos. Como el tiempo es frío por favor
recuerde enviar a su hijo con ropa de abrigo para recreo. Escriba su nombre en la etiqueta de los abrigos,

1er grado Felices fiestas! Los Estudiantes de primer grado están trabajando duro para cumplir con
las metas de proficiencia para el segundo trimestre. Nuestra meta de nivel de lectura para este trimestre
es una G para mostrar proficiencia. Esto incluye tanto la exactitud como comprensión. Entendemos que
esta es una época ocupada y agradecemos el tiempo que se toma para que su niño Lea todas las noches
en su casa. Nosotros estamos concluyendo nuestra unidad de escritura informativa. Estamos muy

2 º grado
Los estudiantes de segundo grado han estado trabajando en los problemas de suma y
resta de historia en matemáticas. También estamos trabajando en el reconocimiento de cuántos dieces y
unos están representados en un número. Por ejemplo, en el número 12 hay un 10 y 2 sobrantes (unos).
Por favor, trabaje con su niño en casa en problemas verbales y posición de valores. En la lectura,
estamos trabajando con grupos pequeños para satisfacer necesidades individuales. En la instrucción de
todo el grupo nos enfocaremos en la determinación de información importante y características de los
pasajes del texto de la ficción y la no ficción. En casa, asegúrese de que su niño está leyendo los libros
adecuados para que ellos puedan practicar lo que aprenden en la escuela. En la ciencia actualmente
estamos trabajando en las plantas, y la planta de su niño se está desarrollando muy bien! hemos
terminado de trabajar en textos de cómo hacer cosas en escritura y estaremos trabajando en los
párrafos de no ficción escribiendo y escribiendo en las próximas semanas adelante.
3er grado
Conforme la nieve comienza a caer, diciembre es también un mes ocupado para los
alumnos de tercer grado. Acabamos de terminar una unidad de matemáticas muy larga en sumas y
restas. Los alumnos necesitarán todavía practican sus habilidades de computadora en casa! Ahora
estamos trabajando en los ángulos, perímetro y área. Ellos están disfrutando de trabajar en su primer
informe de investigación. Sus informes incluyen una introducción, tres o más encabezados y varias
características divertidas de no ficción de su elección. Es emocionante ver a los estudiantes explorar y
discutir sus temas. Para los estudios sociales, estamos estudiando porque la historia de una comunidad es
importante y cómo una comunidad es formada por su historia. La parte final de nuestra unidad de la

4 º grado ¿pueden creer que diciembre ya está aquí? Cuarto grado ha comenzado
Nuevas unidades de estudio. Los estudiantes han estado trabajando para aplicar su comprensión de los
términos geométricos para describir dos objetos tridimensionales. En la escritura, los estudiantes están
trabajando para completar sus historias ficticias y utilizar párrafos en sus escritos de las maneras que lo
han visto en su lectura de ficción. En la ciencia, hemos concluido nuestra unidad en ambientes. Los
alumnos disfrutaron la experimentación con diferentes formas de terrario en el aula. Vamos aprender
más detalles sobre la región occidental de Estados Unidos, que incluye nuestro propio estado de

 ATENCIÓN Estudiantes de 3 º y 5 º grado! Van a estar trabajando en una unidad de grabación
inmediatamente después de las vacaciones de invierno. Si no tienes una grabadora personal para
utilizar y desean comprar una, las órdenes para los instrumentos se vencen el viernes, 13 de
diciembre. Formas para ordenar /cartas están disponibles en la sala de música. Si se ordena una
correa para el cuello con el instrumento cuesta $5.00 por la grabadora y un $ 1.00 adicional por la
correa. Las Grabadoras y correas de cuello vienen en una variedad de colores, y los estudiantes
podrán solicitar el color que desean tener. Las grabadoras deben llegar durante las vacaciones de
invierno y serán distribuidos al regreso de los estudiantes a la escuela.

formas de mover una pelota. Hemos estado trabajando en la forma correcta para rodar, lanzar, tirar
patear y batear. Los estudiantes han estado practicando estas habilidades y aplicándolas en los juegos
pequeños en donde también están trabajando en el respeto del espacio personal. Seguiremos con
técnicas para mover objetos. Hemos estado aprendiendo acerca de las diferentes partes que se compone
el cuerpo tales como agua, huesos, piel, órganos y músculos. Hable con su niño acerca de las diferentes
cosas que componen el cuerpo humano.
3 º-5 º
En educación física los estudiantes están terminando una unidad de hockey y béisbol/fútbol en
noviembre. Vamos a estar practicando habilidades de baile y ritmo en diciembre y luego pasaremos a
técnicas de movimiento, tendremos escalamiento en enero el año que viene. Continuamos aprendiendo
sobre opciones alimenticias saludables y el impacto positivo que el ejercicio tiene en el cuerpo. Por favor
hable con su niño acerca de la importancia de alimentos saludables y el ejercicio.
REGRESARON LOS LAZOS-Y (Y-Ties)
Venderemos lazos-Y otra vez este año en diciembre para recaudar fondos para los nuevos equipos para el
programa de educación física. Lazos-Y son para que los niños los puedan poner en sus zapatos para que
les permitan tirar sólo el cordón en lugar de atar los cordones de los zapatos. Vienen en varios colores y
son excelentes regalos. Su hijo traerá a casa información acerca de los lazos-Y a principios de diciembre.
Este evento sólo durará un par de semanas y las cantidades son limitadas.
Noticias de arte
Mrs. Johnson
Muchas clases estarán trabajando en proyectos de arcilla durante todo el mes de
diciembre en arte. La arcilla es un medio preferido para los estudiantes que les permite
crear algo que pueden atesorar en los años venideros. Quinto grado está terminando una
unidad sobre cómo dibujar paisajes tomando un punto perspectivo usando las reglas para
la medición. Cuarto grado trabajó con arcilla para crear un pez y luego lo barnizo. Tercer
grado está completando una unidad de castillos y dragones y aprendió a crear textura
usando pinturas de acuarelas y sal. Segundo grado ha estado trabajando con tinta de la
India para crear pinturas de estilo Sumi-e de animales y plantas. Primer grado comenzó
una unidad sobre la historia de las vacas en arte y están creando su propia vaca con
papel rasgado. Kinder ha estado practicando formas de dibujo y pintura.

En nuestra próxima reunión del consejo estudiantil en diciembre estaremos promoviendo
nuestro baile de vacaciones que se celebrará el viernes, 6 de diciembre. Estaremos
también organizando una recolección de comida-/ chamarras para las personas sin hogar
durante el mes de diciembre.

Fiestas de Invierno en los salones
El 19 de diciembre todas las aulas tendrá una fiesta de invierno.
1 º grado-5 º grado Las fiestas se celebrarán del 2:40-15:10
Kinder celebrará sus fiesta antes de las clases especiales, 1:40-2:25
PTA proporcionará algunos bocadillos saludables y artículos de
artesanía. Los padres pueden traer golosinas compradas sólo en la
tienda, nada casero está permitido en la escuela debido a la política de
la junta escolar. Los maestros enviarán a casa más información sobre lo
que pueden necesitar para la fiesta.
