Bienvenida
a la Universidad
Politécnica de Valencia
del Vicerrector de
Alumnado e Intercambio
Estamos encantados de que hayas elegido nuestra institución, la Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, para
proseguir tus estudios, y queremos darte una sincera y
cálida bienvenida de parte de todo nuestro profesorado
y personal.
En la Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, creemos que
los programas internacionales de intercambio son el
medio adecuado para extender y reforzar las relaciones
humanas, a través de los estudiantes de diferentes países y continentes. Además
estamos convencidos de que contribuyen a mejorar la formación cultural, científica y
tecnológica que proporcionan las distintas universidades que participan en estos
programas.
Para un joven en formación, la posibilidad de poder continuar su educación en una
universidad extranjera, es una experiencia inolvidable y enormemente enriquecedora
tanto en su vida personal como académica, puesto que durante un tiempo el estudiante estará inmerso en otra cultura, otra sociedad, otro entorno educativo, y en la
mayoría de las ocasiones en otro idioma.
La Universidad Politécnica de Valencia es conocedora de los beneficios que los programas internacionales de intercambio aportan, por ello apoyamos y financiamos a
nuestros estudiantes para que participen en los mismos, y estamos encantados de
recibir a estudiantes de otros países que pueden ayudarnos a entender mejor otras
culturas y a su vez enriquecer la nuestra.
Estimado alumno /a,
En primer lugar, quisiera darte la bienvenida a esta universidad, tu universidad, con el
deseo de que el período de estudios que vas a comenzar te resulte lo más provechoso posible.
Desde la Universidad Politécnica de Valencia vamos a realizar todos los esfuerzos
para que tu integración en la comunidad universitaria sea efectiva. Para ello, quisiera
informarte de que en el Vicerrectorado de Alumnado e Intercambio (V.A.I.) a través
de la Oficina de Programas Internacionales de Intercambio (OPII) te proporcionaremos toda la ayuda que precises a tu llegada (alojamiento, información, etc.). En
cuanto a los trámites administrativos y académicos, rogamos te pongas en contacto con el
responsable de Relaciones Internacionales en tu
Centro (Escuela o Facultad).

a ciudad de Valencia es la capital de la
Comunidad Valenciana y de la provincia de Valencia. Está situada en la
mitad este de España, a orillas del Mar
Mediterráneo. La ciudad esta considerada la
tercera ciudad más grande de España, con una
población de 1.500.000 habitantes.
La Provincia de Valencia tiene un área aproximadamente de 10.807 km2. En el interior se
encuentran numerosas montañas y bosques,
mientras que la costa es totalmente plana y
con multitud de playas. También posee un gran
lago conocido como La Albufera.
Dadas sus características e infraestructura,
Valencia y sus alrededores constituyen un centro de atracción turística. Tiene un clima muy
agradable durante todo el año, con más de
300 días de sol al año, y una temperatura
media de 16.7ºC.
La ciudad de Valencia fue fundada por los
romanos en el año 138 antes de Cristo, bajo el
nombre de “Valentia”, que ha conservado
hasta nuestros días.Valencia ha visto una
variedad de distintas culturas a través de la

1.3 Clima
Valencia posee uno de los climas más benignos de Europa. Se caracteriza por un clima
suave, típicamente mediterráneo, con una
temperatura media anual superior a los 17ºC.
Los veranos son cálidos y los inviernos muy
moderados. Durante los meses invernales la
temperatura no suele bajar de los 10º C. Las
precipitaciones son discretas y presentan el
clásico mínimo estival mediterráneo, con dos
máximos, uno en otoño y otro a finales de
invierno y principios de primavera.

historia: los Romanos, Visigodos y los Árabes
hicieron de la ciudad un importante centro
cultural y financiero. En el año 1094 El Cid
Campeador conquistó Valencia a los Árabes,
sin embargo en 1102 fue reconquistada
por los mismos. Fue en 1238 cuando el Rey
Jaime I de Aragón reconquistó la ciudad
definitivamente.
Durante los siglos XV y XVI, llegó a ser una de
las grandes fuerzas económicas del
Mediterráneo, este periodo es conocido como
El Siglo de Oro de Valencia, que además enfatiza su esplendor artístico. Durante la segunda
mitad del siglo XIX, Valencia se convirtió en el
bastión de los Republicanos y Socialistas.
Durante la Guerra Civil Española, se convirtió
en capital de la república. Y desde 1982 es la
capital de la Comunidad Valenciana.

El puerto de Valencia está a 4 kilómetros del centro de la ciudad, es un puerto
importante tanto a nivel comercial como de
transporte de viajeros.
La ciudad de Valencia es de fácil acceso, existen diversas formas de llegar a ella.

Red de carreteras
Valencia esta conectada con el resto de
Europa a través de la Autopista del
Mediterráneo (A-7). También a través de carreteras nacionales como la N-III, N-332, N-340,
la N-234 y la Autovía A3 Madrid-Valencia.
Existen también autobuses diarios con destino
al resto de ciudades españolas y de Europa que
salen desde la estación de autobuses, cuya

Trenes
La llamada Estación del Norte, es la
principal estación de trenes en Valencia y está
situada en pleno centro de la ciudad, en la
Calle Xativa, cruce con la Calle Marqués de
Sotelo.

vuelos a Madrid y Barcelona en conexión a
otros vuelos intercontinentales. Un taxi desde

La Universidad Politécnica
2.2 El Campus de Vera
El Campus de Vera esta situado en la ciudad de Valencia, en la parte norte de la misma, junto al
comienzo de la autopista a Barcelona, conocida como A-7 o E-15.
2.1 Un poco de Historia
Nuestra Universidad es una institución joven.
Su historia se remonta a tan sólo 35 años, a
pesar de que algunos de sus centros tienen
más de un siglo de existencia, es el caso de la
Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería del
Diseño, la Escuela Politécnica Superior de
Alcoy y la Facultad de Bellas Artes.
En 1971 es cuando nuestra Institución se constituye definitivamente en Universidad
Politécnica de Valencia. A partir de ese momento, comienzan a incorporarse el resto de centros: La Facultad de Bellas Artes, la Escuela
Técnica Superior de Ingeniería del Diseño, la
Escuela Politécnica de Alcoy, la Escuela Técnica
Superior de Gestión en la Edificación, la Escuela
Técnica Superior del Medio Rural y Enología y
la Escuela Técnica Superior de Informática
Aplicada, la Facultad de Informática, la Escuela
Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Geodésica,
Cartográfica y Topográfica, y la Escuela Técnica
Superior de Ingenieros de Telecomunicación.
En 1994 el centro de Alcoy pasa a ser Escuela
Politécnica Superior y, en 1993, se funda la
Escuela de Gandia, que se constituye como
Escuela Politécnica Superior durante el curso
académico 1999-2000. Asimismo, durante ese
curso, se pone en marcha la Facultad de
Administración y Dirección de Empresas.

En la actualidad, nuestra comunidad universitaria está formada por unos 39.000 miembros.
De ellos, cerca de 35.000 son alumnos, 2.387
son profesores y 1.593 integran el grupo de
personal de la administración y servicios. La
UPV está constituida por 15 centros universitarios, de los que 10 son escuelas técnicas
superiores, 3 son facultades y 2 son escuelas
politécnicas superiores. Además, cuenta con 5
centros adscritos (Escuela Universitaria Ford
España, Facultad de Estudios de la Empresa,
Florida Universitaria, Mediterranean University
of Science & Technology y Escuela de Turismo
Pax) y una extensión universitaria.
La Universidad Politécnica de Valencia se constituye de tres campus:
Campus de Vera
El cual constituye la mayor parte de la universidad y está situado en la ciudad de Valencia.
2.3 Transporte al Campus de Vera
Aparte del transporte privado, existen otros medios para llegar al Campus de Vera. Puedes usar los
autobuses rojos de la EMT (Empresa Municipal de Transportes). Existen ocho líneas, con numerosas paradas en la ciudad de Valencia que llegan al Campus, estas líneas son:

También puedes venir al Campus de Vera en Metro, la Línea 4, consistente en un moderno tranvía que va desde Ademúz hasta Doctor Lluch, y tiene cuatro paradas en la Avd. Tarongers, junto al
Campus de la Universidad Politécnica de Valencia:

Situado en la localidad de Gandia (Provincia

2.4 Estructura de los estudios
Los estudios (diplomaturas, ingenierías técnicas, ingenierías y licenciaturas) en la Universidad
Politécnica de Valencia se estructuran, de acuerdo con la legislación española, en tres ciclos.
Además la UPV ofrece diversos cursos de postgrado así como numerosos Masters universitarios.
La estructura de los estudios en España está siendo en estos momentos revisada y pronto se
emprenderán las reformas necesarias emanadas del Proceso de Bolonia, que pretende ofrecer un
marco común de estructuras de títulos universitarios en Europa.
Los estudios de Primer Ciclo
Estos estudios normalmente se desarrollan en un periodo de 3 años, y al final del mismo se debe
presentar un Proyecto Fin de Carrera. A la finalización de estos estudios se obtiene la titulación
de Ingeniera/o Técnica/o.
Estudios de Primero y Segundo Ciclo
Estos estudios se realizan en un periodo de 5 años, y en la mayoría de ellos debes realizar un Proyecto
Fin de Carrera al finalizar. Al final de los estudios se obtiene la titulación de Ingeniero/a Superior,
Arquitecto/a, o Licenciado/a, en la correspondiente especialidad.
Estudios de Segundo Ciclo
Estos estudios se realizan generalmente en un periodo de 2 años y debes realizar al final un
Proyecto Fin de Carrera. Para cursar este ciclo debes haber completado con anterioridad los estudios de Primer Ciclo. Al final de los estudios se obtiene la titulación de Ingeniero/a Superior,
Arquitecto/a, o Licenciado/a, en la correspondiente especialidad.
Estudios de Tercer Ciclo
Estos estudios reciben el nombre de Doctorado, el periodo de duración de los mismos va de 2 a
5 años. Es requisito indispensable tener la titulación de Ingeniero/a Superior, Arquitecto/a, o
Licenciado/a. Una vez finalizados y superados los estudios de Tercer Ciclo obtendrás el grado de
“DOCTOR”.

2.8 Español para Estudiantes Extranjeros de Intercambio
La UPV se interesa y responsabiliza por ofrecer
un inmejorable servicio público de enseñanza,
y tiene como finalidad respaldar las aspiraciones sociales, para ello ha desarrollado una gran
variedad de Masters y Cursos de
Especialización, para el desarrollo profesional y
técnico de los posgraduados.
El Departamento de Idiomas de la UPV organiza la asignatura: “Español para Extranjeros”. Existen
varios niveles, por lo que los estudiantes deben hacer un examen, a su llegada a la UPV, para poder
matricularse en el nivel adecuado. La matrícula en esta asignatura es gratis y los alumnos que la
superen obtienen los créditos correspondientes.

2.10 Idiomas de instrucción de las enseñanzas
Las clases en la Universidad Politécnica de Valencia se imparten mayoritariamente en castellano
aunque también se imparte docencia en Valenciano.
2.11 Docencia en Inglés
La Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, en su constante afán de adaptación a las necesidades reales de la sociedad actual, promoción de la participación internacional en la educación, y adecuación a las exigencias de la sociedad de hoy, viene ofreciendo desde hace algunos años la docencia en inglés de determinadas asignaturas. Cada estudiante extranjero tendrá asignado
un tutor que supervisará su trabajo y le ayudará a resolver los problemas que puedan aparecer durante sus estancia en la UPV.

Una de las tareas de la Oficina de Programas Internacionales (OPII), Vicerrectorado de Alumnado
e Intercambio (VAI), es asegurarse de que los estudiantes extranjeros que se encuentran en la UPV
bajo un programa de intercambio no tengan problemas de integración en la comunidad
universitaria.
Los servicios que se ofrecen desde la OPII a los alumnos visitantes son, entre otros:

La Oficina de Programas Internacionales de
Intercambio (OPII) organiza una semana antes
del comienzo de las clases, uno o dos días de
sesiones orientativas para estudiantes extranjeros de intercambio. Durante estas sesiones,
se informa al estudiante de las facilidades y
servicios que ofrece la UPV, tales como actividades deportivas, servicios de biblioteca, actividades culturales, cursos de español etc. A su
llegada a la Universidad se le proporcionará al
alumno información sobre el programa de la
próxima sesión orientativa.
3.4 Alojamiento
Intercambio (OPII) de la UPV proporciona
ayuda a los estudiantes extranjeros en la búsqueda de alojamiento a través de la información que les proporcionamos en el momento
de su llegada y además a través de la base de
datos de pisos para alquilar y compartir que
los alumnos encontrarán el la versión Inglesa
de la siguiente página web:
Existen diferentes tipos de alojamiento entre
los cuales el estudiante puede elegir:
a) Pisos compartidos con estudiantes
Es la forma más habitual de alojamiento,
por su bajo coste económico y por la gran
independencia que supone. Los pisos pueden
compartirse con estudiantes españoles o
extranjeros.
El precio medio varia entre 100 y 190€ por
mes y persona, no incluye gastos de agua, gas
y electricidad. Deberás abonar un depósito de
dinero equivalente a un mes de alquiler, para
cubrir posibles daños en la propiedad. El depósito te será devuelto en cuanto dejes la vivienda si está en buen estado.
Aconsejamos a los estudiantes que chequeen
bien el piso y se aseguren de que entienden
bien las condiciones del contrato de alquiler.
b) Estancia con una familia
La estancia con una familia es similar a pensión completa, que incluye 3 comidas al día, o
media pensión que solo incluye dos.
El precio por mes es aproximadamente de
450.00€ pensión completa, o 325.00€ media
pensión.
Existe una opción adicional de lavada y planchado de ropa.
c) Colegios Mayores (Residencias de
Estudiantes)
Existen residencias privadas donde puedes
alquilar una habitación. Existe también la posibilidad de media pensión o pensión completa.
Los precios anuales son aproximadamente de:
• Habitación individual, pensión completa
desde 580 € / mes
• Habitación doble, pensión completa
desde 530 € / mes
• Habitación indivividual, media pensión
desde 500 € / mes
• Habitación doble, media pensión
desde 400 € / mes.
En el caso de que una habitación se alquile por
una semana o un mes, el precio variará.

Normalmente las clases empiezan hacia finales de septiembre. Para conocer la fecha exacta del comienzo del semestre deberás contactar con el coordinador de relaciones internacionales de tu escuela o facultad, antes de tu

En tu primera visita al Campus de la UPV, tendrás que dirigirte a la Oficina de Programas

(Vicerrectorado de Alumnado e Intercambio),
que se encuentra en el Ágora (planta superior,
Edificio 3C).donde en la reunión de bienvenida
se te entregará el paquete de bienvenida y se
te ofrecerá información sobre la matriculación, los alojamientos así como información
general de la UPV. Después de esta visita,
deberás dirigirte a la Oficina de Programas
Internacionales de tu Escuela o Facultad en la
UPV, donde tramitarás todos los procedimientos para matricularte y obtener tu carnet de
estudiante de la UPV.

4.6 CEDAT: Facilidades para

La Fundación CEDAT nació en el seno de la
Universidad Politécnica de Valencia por iniciativa de su rectorado, es un instrumento de asesoramiento e información para que las personas discapacitadas que estudian y trabajan en

4.7 Servicios de ordenadores

La UPV está conectada a través del network
“upvnet”, network que ofrece un amplio servicio a la comunidad universitaria, tales como emails, noticias, programas, etc. Estos servicios
se actualizan continuamente y además incorporan siempre la ultima tecnología. En cada
escuela y facultad existen laboratorios de
ordenadores, conectados al network upv, y a
Internet, donde los estudiantes pueden hacer

4.9 La Asociación A.E.G.E.E.
en Valencia
Tiene su sede en la planta 3ª de la Casa del
Alumno, Edificio 4K. Este es el acronismo para
la Asociación de Jóvenes Europeos, que es una
asociación apolítica, no-religiosa y sin animo
de lucro, cuyo principal objetivo es promover e
integrar la cooperación europea dentro del
marco universitario.
Esta asociación esta dentro de la AEGEE de
Europa, fundada en 1985, y tiene más de
15.000 miembros en más de 150 universidades de la Unión Europea. A lo largo del año
organizan diferentes actividades para promocionar e informar sobre las diversas culturas
existentes en Europa, así como de la movilidad
existente.

A todos los efectos, el Instituto de Ciencias de
la Educación (I.C.E.) tendrá la consideración de
Instituto Universitario adscrito directamente

4.12 Centro de Lenguas
La misión principal del Centro de Lenguas es la

El GOPU es parte del ICE, su función es ayudar
a los estudiantes en su desarrollo tanto
personal como académico. Ofrece talleres de
desarrollo personal totalmente gratuitos.
Instituto Ciencias de la Educación (ICE)
La Casa del Alumno está situada en el edificio
4K. La Casa del Alumno pone al alcance del
alumno una serie de actividades culturales
como: Talleres, Ciclos de Cine, Jornadas,
Exposiciones.
La Casa del Alumno está dirigida por los propios estudiantes. Está abierta 24 horas al día.
La sede de la casa del Alumno tiene una superficie de 5.200 m2 y cuenta con diversos servicios, tales como salas de reuniones, salas de
estudio, salas de ordenadores etc …

4.15 Otros servicios en el Campus de Vera
Comidas
En el Campus de Vera hay ocho cafeterías que sirven comida a lo largo de todo el
día. Están abiertas desde las 8.00 de la mañana hasta las 20.00 de la tarde. Existe un menú
de alrededor de 3.50 €, del que los estudiantes pueden elegir entre primer y segundos platos, ensalada, pan y postre. Los menús varían
cada día de la semana.
La Oficina Verde
Situada en el Edificio 6E, junto al
Gabinete Médico.
Tiene asignadas tareas de gestión y desarrollo
de proyectos medioambientales. Su función
principal es la coordinación de la implantación
del sistema de gestión ambiental en la UPV,
según la norma ISO 14001. También coordina
la recogida de toda clase de residuos generados en la universidad y ofrece servicios de
información y documentación medioambiental de soporte a la docencia e investigación.

La línea 4 de Metro es un moderno
Tranvía que va desde el centro de Valencia,
Puente de Madera (Pont de Fusta) situado
frente a las Torres de Serrano, hasta la Playa
Malvarrosa. El tranvía tiene cuatro paradas al

Buses
La compañía pública de transporte
urbano EMT, es la encargada de dirigir el servicio de autobuses dentro de la ciudad. Hay más
de 51 rutas que conectan diferentes zonas de
la ciudad.
Un billete sencillo de autobús cuesta 1.10 €, y
se adquiere al entrar en el autobús. Los horarios varían de línea a línea, pero normalmente
los autobuses circulan de 5.30 am hasta las
11.00 pm, cada 10 ó 20 minutos.
Existen 7 líneas nocturnas de autobuses, que
circulan desde las 11.00 pm hasta las 3.00 am,

Existen diferentes compañías de taxi.
Los precios varían dependiendo de la zona por
la que te desplaces. El coste de cada viaje
aparece en el taxímetro, el coste mínimo es

Metro
En la ciudad de Valencia existe una red
de metro con 5 líneas diferentes. El metro circula desde las 5.00 am hasta las 11.00 pm. La
Línea 4 es un TRANVÍA que pasa por Campus
de Vera.
Dentro de la zona urbana, el ticket cuesta

La Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias es el
emblema de la Comunidad Valenciana del
siglo XXI, diseñado como centro de arte, cultura y recreo. Es de gran interés arquitectónico y
turístico. Un lugar único en el mundo para disfrutar de todo lo que ofrece.
La Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias está en el
antiguo cauce del rio Turia, en el área donde
empieza la autopista del Saler. Tiene una
superficie de 350.000 m2, repartidos en cuatro
áreas :
El Palacio de las Artes, espacio plurifuncional
construido para diversas actividades culturales, tales como ópera por ejemplo;
L'Hemisfèric, cine-planetario con pantalla
IMAX. Museo de las Ciencias, museo con exhibiciones relacionadas con la ciencia y la tecnología; y L'Oceanogràfic, gran parque con zona

Además de las facilidades deportivas de la
UPV, la ciudad de Valencia posee un gran
número de centros deportivos. Entre ellos se

Parque Municipal de la Dehesa del Saler, así
como otros centros deportivos ubicados en los
diferentes barrios de la ciudad de Valencia.
La vida nocturna en Valencia es muy emocionante y popular. La noches valencianas son
muy famosas, existen multitud de locales para
todos los gustos. Hay pubs, cafeterias, discotecas, salones de baile, etc.
Las zonas más populares para salir por la noche
son: Barrio del Carmen, Avd. Blasco Ibáñez (cerca
del final de la misma), Plaza del Cedro, Calle Juan
Lloréns, Avd. de Aragón, Plaza Canovas, Plaza

5.7 Festividades Locales
La gente de Valencia es muy abierta, y generosa y además le encantan las fiestas al aire libre.
Los ingredientes básicos de las fiestas valencianas son la luz, la pólvora, fuegos artificiales,
música, etc.
Las FALLAS son las fiestas principales de
Valencia. Se celebran del 12 al 19 de marzo.
Son una explosión de colores y fuegos artificiales. Monumentos de cartón piedra, llamados Fallas, se “plantan” por toda la ciudad y
pueblos de la provincia. La gente se viste en
trajes tradicionales, cada mediodía a las 14.00
horas tiene lugar la popular “Mascletà” en la
Plaza del Ayuntamiento. Tradicionalmente, se
hace una ofrenda de flores a la Virgen de los
Desamparados.

En la Comunidad Valenciana existen 485 kilómetros de costa. Existen playas de todo tipo a
lo largo del litoral. La arena varia desde muy
fina y dorada a más granulada o incluso puede
llegar a convertirse en gravilla. Todas las playas
tienen un espléndido clima y luminosidad.
Al norte del puerto de Valencia, se encuentran
las playas del Levante, las Arenas y la
Malvarrosa, las más cercanas a la ciudad, accesibles con transporte público. Existen restaurantes típicos en la zona, donde puedes degustar deliciosos platos valencianos.
Al sur de la ciudad encontrarás la playa de
Pinedo. Más al sur, a unos 8 kms se encuentra
la Playa del Saler, situada en un área de gran
interés ecológico, junto al lago de La Albufera.

En Valencia tienen lugar multitud de actividades culturales. Puedes encontrar teatros donde
se representan numerosas y variadas obras
teatrales. En la ciudad existen centros como: El
Centro Dramático de la Generalitat
Valenciana, la Sala Escalante, el Teatro
Principal, El Teatro Micalet, el Teatro Olimpia,
Teatro Talia, etc.
El Palau de la Música ofrece conciertos de
música clásica a lo largo del año. Una vez al
año tiene lugar el Certamen Internacional de
Bandas de Música, este festival mantiene vivo
el espíritu tradicional musical existente en la
provincia de Valencia.
En la ciudad de Valencia se organizan conciertos de rock y festivales internacionales, tales
como L' Eclectic y L'Observatori, donde también puedes disfrutar de grupos nacionales.

6.1 Seguro Médico
6.2 Permiso de Estancia: Visados
Los estudiantes europeos están cubiertos por
la Tarjeta Sanitaria Europea, el E-128 y el E111, que se emiten en el país de origen.
Intercambio (OPII), de la Universidad
Politécnica de Valencia, ofrece un servicio para
regular la estancia de los estudiantes en
España.
Existen otros países que no pertenecen a la
Unión Europea, pero con los que el estado
español tiene acuerdos, como por ejemplo:
Andorra, Brasil, Chile, Ecuador, Panamá,
Paraguay, Perú, Suiza, Marruecos, etc. En estos
casos, tendrás que contactar con la Embajada
para más información.
También puedes obtener un seguro privado
que te cubra durante tu estancia en España, el
coste del mismo variará dependiendo de los
servicios que te ofrezca.
Es muy importante que el estudiante clarifique con seguridad las condiciones del seguro
médico antes de dejar su país. La Universidad
Politécnica de Valencia no admitirá a
ningún estudiantes que no tenga un seguro
médico (privado o público).
Si no eres ciudadano de la UE o de Austria,
Alemania, Belgica, Dinamarca, Finlandia,
Francia, Grecia, Irlanad, Islandía, Italia,
Liechtenstein, Luxemburgo, Noruega, Holanda,
Portugal, Reino Unido, Suiza, Suecia, Chipre,
Eslovakia, Eslovenia, Estonia, Hungria, Latvia,
Lithuania, Malta, Polonia o Republica Checa,
debes obtener el Visado de Estudiante en la
Embajada o Consulado Español de tu país de
origen antes de venir a España. Una vez llegues
a España, y dependiendo del visado de estudios obtenido deberás,en el plazo de 30 días
desde tu entrada en el país o en un país del
Tratado de Schengen, regularizar tu situación,
solicitando El Permiso de Estancia por
Estudios.
TODOS LOS ESTUDIANTES NECESITAN DE
UN VISADO, EXCEPTO AQUELLOS QUE PROVIENEN DE UNO DE LOS PAISES MENCIONADOS ANTERIORMENTE.
6.3 Carnets de utilidad
La Universidad Politécnica de Valencia emite
un carnet de estudiante para TODOS LOS
ESTUDIANTES, conocido como el Carnet de
Estudiante de la UPV, que permite el uso de
todos los servicios y facilidades existentes en
la UPV. Con este carnet puedes obtener descuentos en tiendas, cines, teatro, etc.
El Gobierno Valenciano (GV) y el IVAJ
(Instituto Valenciano de la Juventud) ofrece a
los estudiantes menores de 26 años el llamado Carnet Jove (en Europa, Under 26 Card)
que da derecho a descuentos en tiendas, cine,
teatro, transporte público, alojamiento, etc.
Puede usarse en 28 países europeos. Este carnet tiene una validez bianual, hace falta una
foto y un pago de 7.14 €
Podrás conseguir el Carnet en cualquier sucursal de las entidades siguientes: BANCAIXA,
la CAM, Caixa Ontinyent, Caixa Carlet y la
Federació de Cooperatives de Crèdit
Valencianes (caixes rurals), y en la misma sede
del IVAJ.

España está dentro del sistema monetario europeo, y su moneda es el Euro (€).
En España la electricidad es de un voltaje de
220 y tiene una frecuencia de 50 Hz.
Bancos
Los bancos están abiertos normalmente de lunes a viernes desde las 8.30 am hasta las
2.30 pm. Durante los meses de verano (julio y agosto) de 9.00 am a 2.00pm, también de lunes a
viernes. En el ágora de la UPV se encuentran 3 sucursales de entidades bancarias donde puedes

Existen cabinas telefónicas por toda la ciudad
y en el Campus de Vera, que puedes usar con

The city of Valencia is the capital of
the “Comunidad Valenciana” and the
province of Valencia. It is located in
the middle-east of Spain, on the shore of the
Mediterranean Sea. The city is considered the
third largest city of the Spanish State, according to its population rate, 1.500.000 inhabitants.
The province of Valencia has an area of approximately 10,807 km2. Inland, you can find
mountainous areas whilst on the coast the
land is completehy flat, and has many beaches
as well as a big lake called “La Albufera”.
During the 15th and 16th centuries, it became
one of the great economic forces of the
Mediterranean; this period is known as
“Valencian Golden Century”, which emphasises its artistic splendour. During the second
half of the 19th century, Valencia became the
bastion of Republican and Socialist ideas.
In the Civil War, it was converted into the
Republican Capital after the removal of the
government from Madrid (1937-1939). Since
1982 it has been the capital of the Valencian
Region.
1.2 Access to the City
1.1 Origins
Valencia was founded by the Romans in 138
BC, and named “Valentia”, which has remained
up to the present day.Valencia has seen a
variety of different cultures throughout its
long history: The Romans, the Visigoths and
the Moors made the city an important centre
of culture and finance. In the year 1094, “El Cid
Campeador” conquered Valencia from the
Moors, however in 1102 it was reconquered by
the Moors. Finally in 1238, Jaume I de Aragon
reconquered the city for good.

The city has excellent transport links. There are
different ways to access the city of Valencia.
Plane
The international airport of Valencia
(VLC) is based in the town of “Manises” which
is about eight kilometres west of the city. It
offers daily flights to major Spanish cities and
overseas. There are also a great number of
flights which go to Barcelona and Madrid as a
connection with other flights. If you take a taxi
from the city to the airport, it may cost you
about 13 g, however this price may vary
depending on the traffic.

Valencia enjoys a mild temperate
Mediterranean climate. The average annual
temperature is 17ºC with warm summers and
very mild winters, rarely below 10ºC. There is
only light rainfall mainly in autumn and the
beginning of spring.

Valencia is connected with the rest of Europe
through the so called Mediterranean highway
(A-7 or E-15) and the national roads N-III (E901), N-332, N-340 and N-234 connect the
city with the rest of the country.

The “Estación del Norte” is the main
train station in Valencia and is located in the
city centre. It offers daily train services to
Spanish and European cities. The train service

There is also a bus route that goes to the airport, it is a yellow bus of the CVT company,
bus number 30, which runs every day except
Sundays and bank holidays. It costs 1.70 g and
connects the airport and the bus station which
is situated in C/Menéndez Pidal 13. If you are

2.2 How to get to the Vera Campus Site
The Vera Campus Site is located in the City of Valencia, on the Northern side at the beginning of
the motorway that leads to Barcelona (A-7 or E-15).
2.1 A brief historical background
Our University is a young institution. Its history goes back only thirty years, even though
some of its schools have existed for more than
a century, as the School of Engineering Design,
the Higher Polytechnic School of Alcoy and
the Faculty of Fine Arts.
The University was founded in 1968-1969 with
the creation of the Higher Polytechnic School
of Valencia. However, it was not until the 11th
of March 1971 when a decree gave the Higher
Polytechnic School of Valencia the highest academic rank and our institution finally became
the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia. From
then on, several institutions were incorporated:
The Faculty of Fine Arts , the School of
Engineering Design, the School of Applied
Computing Science., the Faculty of Computing
Science, the School of Engineering in Geodesy,
Cartography and Surveying and the School of
Telecommunications Engineering.
The School of Alcoy became the Higher
Polytechnic School of Alcoy in 1994 , and in
1993 the School of Gandia was created and
later became the Higher Polytechnic School of
Gandia during the 1999-2000 academic year.
The Faculty of Business Administration and
Management started its activities during the
same year.

Today, over 39,000 members integrate our
academic community: 35,000 of these are
students, 2,387 are teachers and 1,593 belong
to the administration and services personnel.
The UPV is comprised of 15 centres: ten schools, three faculties, and two higher polytechnic
schools (Alcoy and Gandia). It is also formed
by five associated institutions (the Technical
School of Industrial Engineering, located at the
Ford Motor Company in Spain; the Faculty of
Business Studies, the Florida University Centre;
the Mediterranean University of Science &
Technology and the Pax School of Tourism)
and by one university extension.

2.3 Transport to Vera Campus
Apart from private transport, there are different ways of getting to the Vera Campus Site, by using
public transport.
You can use the EMT buses net (the local bus company). There are eight routes, with bus stops in
different parts of the city, which go to the Campus. These routes are:

2.4 Structure of studies
The “Universidad Politécnica de Valencia” offers degree courses in the three different Spanish
cycles or periods of higher education, which are regulated by the Spanish legislation. Additionally
there are several Master degrees and postgraduate courses available.
The structure of studies in Spain is now being reviewed and will be soon modified in order to meet
the needs of the Bologna Process, which aims at offering a common frame of university degree
structures in Europe.
First Cycle courses
The average period of these studies is three years and, at the end of them, a final project must be
submitted. At the end of these studies you obtain a degree in Technical Engineering / Ingeniería
Técnica or Technical Architecture / Arquitectura Técnica, with the corresponding major.
First and Second Cycle courses
The average period for these degrees is five years and you have to accomplish a final project for
almost all of these degrees. At the end of these courses you gain a degree in Engineering
/Ingeniería, Architecture / Arquitectura or a Bachelor / Licenciatura, with the major that corresponds to each of these.
Second Cycle courses
The average period for these degrees is two years and you must accomplish a final project for
almost all of these degrees. To enrol in these courses it is compulsory to have completed First
Cycle studies. At the end of these courses you obtain a degree in Engineering /Ingeniería,
Architecture / Arquitectura or a Bachelor / Licenciatura, with the major that corresponds to each
of these.
Third Cycle studies
These degrees are Doctorates. A necessary prerequisite for one of these degrees is a Bachelor /
Licenciatura, an Architecture / Arquitectura degree or an Engineering / Ingeniería degree. Once
you have finished these studies you obtain the title of “Doctor” with the corresponding
major.There are different doctorate courses that are supervised by different departments according to the major that is chosen. The minimum period of these studies is two years.

The “Universidad Politécnica de Valencia” is
aware of its responsibility as a public service
and of its vocation to support high social aspirations, has developed a comprehensive range
of Masters and Specialised courses dedicated
to the training and technical preparation of
post graduates.
The Languages Department of the UPV organises the course: “Spanish as a foreign language”.
There are several levels, for which students will need to do an exam when they first arrive at the
UPV, in order to register to the adequate level. Enrolment into this course is free of cost for the
foreign exchange students of UPV. Students who will pass the exam will obtain the corresponding credits, which will appear in the exchange certificate.

The majority of the courses in the UPV are taught in Spanish there are also courses in English and
in Valenciano.
2.11 Courses in English
The regular language of instruction at the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia is Spanish. In addition, the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, in its constant aspiration to adjust to the real needs
of our society, promote international collaboration in education and meet the needs of today's
world, has been offering a number of subjects in English during the last academic years. More than

3.2 Tutors for visiting students
A Tutor is assigned to every foreign Student, in
order to supervise his/her work and solve any
problems that might arise during the course of
their studies. The Tutor will periodically inform
the Student's Exchange university about the
Student progress.
3.3 Orientation Sessions
3.1 Vice-Rectorate of Students Affairs and Exchange (VAI) and
Office of International Exchange Programs (OPII)
One of the tasks of the Office of International Exchange Programs (OPII) is to make sure that
foreign students who are studying in the “Universidad Politécnica de Valencia” under exchange
programmes, do not have any problems integrating into the university community.
The services offered by this office are:
Receiving students in the UPV
Providing the Welcome package
Offering advice and help in looking for housing
Advising them on different cultural activities that are organised
Involving students in activities such as sports, thus putting them in contact with other
student organisations, etc.
To be able to co-ordinate the arrival of the exchange students in the best way, under different
programmes of existing international co-operation, the students should contact the co-ordinator
of international programs at the school or faculty where they have been admitted.

The Office of International Exchange
Programs(OPII) will organise every term, before classes start, one or two days of Orientation
Sessions for foreign students under exchange
programmes attending the UPV. During these
sessions, we will try to introduce the student
to the university community and will provide
with information about facilities and services
offered within the UPV, such as sport facilities,
library, cultural activities, Spanish language
courses, etc., as well as general information
about the city of Valencia. These Orientation
Sessions will take place one week before the
start of the term, for which we suggest foreign
students to plan their arrival in Valencia for the
second fortnight of September. The Second
Term Orientation Sessions will take place
during the first fortnight
of February.
3.4 Accommodation
The Office of International Exchange Programs
(OPII) of the UPV is in charge of helping
foreign students to find housing by means of
the information about accommodation possibilities that we hand visiting students when
they arrive and also by means of a flats Data
Base which is updated every day with offers of
flats to rent and share with other students
available in the English version at the following web site :
There are different kinds of accommodation
you can choose from:
a) Shared flat with students
At the moment this is the most popular choice because of the economical factor and the
greater independence. You can share a flat
either with Spanish or foreign students.
The average price of a rented flat ranges
approximately from 100.00 to 190.00 € per
month/person, which does not include bills
such as water, gas and electricity. In any case
you will have to pay a deposit equivalent to a
month's rent, and this is to cover possible
damage costs. Deposit is refundable on vacation of the rent contract.
Students are advised to look around the flat
and their bedroom before renting, and also to
ensure that they fully understand the terms of
the agreement.
b) Staying with a family
Choosing to live with a Spanish family, is
usually the equivalent of full board, which is
three meals
a day, or half board, which is two meals a day.
The monthly price is approx 450.00 € full
board and approx 325.00 € half board. There is
an additional option for washing and ironing
of clothes.
c) Halls of residence (“Colegios Mayores”)
These are private halls where you can rent a
bedroom. There is also the option of half board

The UPV promotes a full range of sports at different levels through the Sports Area. The Vera
Campus Site has excellent sport facilities such
as the indoor heated swimming pool, football
and rugby pitches, four tennis courts, two racket ball courts, two squash courts, three sports
basketball courts, five-a-side football, handball
and volleyball, a gym for weight training, aerobics, and keep fit, the martial arts of Tae Kwondo, Aikido, Karate and Judo, a table tennis
room, etc. Access to these facilities is regulated by the Area de Deportes.

sport tournaments are organised, such as tennis, table tennis, badminton, racquetball,
squash, chess. Leagues are also organised between the different UPV faculties, such as football, five-a-side football, handball, volleyball,

4.5 The UPV doctor's surgery
On the Vera Campus Site, in the Building 6E,
there is a doctor's surgery available, which is
opened from Monday to Friday, from 8.00 a.m.
to 8.00 p.m. There is no medical service at UPV
during week-ends. This service helps students
with any health problems while they are on the
Campus. If necessary the “Gabinete Medico”
may transfer you to another health centre that
specialises in your particular problem.
For non-emergency situations, you can arrange an appointment with the Doctor, via
Internet or by phone. Foreign students who
are unfamiliar with the Valencian health service can use this service and other services related to it: “Consultorios de la Seguridad Social”,
social security consultations, Hospitals, etc.

4.6 CEDAT: Facilities for
disabled people in the UPV
The UPV is aware of the need to integrate
people with physical disabilities into the university with as much ease as possible, and therefore it has created facilities for disabled people so that they can move around as easily as
possible, for example in wheelchairs.
The CEDAT Foundation was born in the midst
of the UPV due to its rectorship initiative. This
centre becomes a tool for disabled people who
study and work at the university as well as for
those who are foreign to it, so that they can
receive advice and information. Furthermore,
it gives rise to all kind of actions to ease the
social and labour integration of disabled people from the Valencian Community.

The UPV Computer Service is linked up
through the “upvnet” network, which offers a
wide range of services to the university community, such as E-mail, news, programmes, a
link to other computers etc. The services offered by this network are constantly updated
and always incorporate the latest advantages

4.9 The A.E.G.E.E. Association
of Valencia
Located on the 3rd floor of the Students
Home (building 4K). This is the acronym for an
association of young Europeans which is apolitical, non-religious and is a non-profit making
organisation, whose main objective is to promote European co-operation and integration
within the university environment. They make
up part of the European AEGEE, founded in
1985, which at the moment has more than
15,000 members in more than 150 university
cities within the European Union.
In order to create a European awareness between the students, they organise different
activities throughout the year to promote the
knowledge of the diversity of European cultures, as well as awareness of European mobility.

There are seven cafeterias on the
campus that serve food throughout the day.
They are open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
There is a set menu for about 3.50 €, from
which the students can choose between a first

week, in order to provide a balanced diet, and
a variety of choice.
The Green Office
Location: Building 6E next to the
UPV´s doctor surgery.
The Green Office is in charge of the ecological
quality of materials used in the UPV, and the
disposal of waste produced within the UPV
Campuses. Its main aim is to coordinate the
implementation of the system of environmental management in the UPV according to the

Combined tickets allow travelling on the EMT
bus service and the FGV tram and metro lines,

Metro
The city of Valencia has a Metro network of five lines which connect different
parts of the city. It runs from 5:00 a.m. to
11:00 p.m. Line 4 is a modern Tram, that runs
by the Campus de Vera.
Taxi
Different companies offer a taxi service. Prices vary depending on the zone. The
price shows up on the taximeter. Minimum
charge is 1.80 €.
You can buy a single ticket at the same
Station, that costs 1.10 € if you are going to
travel within the urban zone. Also you can get
10 Trips Travel Cards (Bonometro) at Stations,
Kiosks and Tobacconists, the price ranges from
5.40 to 15.90 €, depending on the zones you
are going to travel to.
There is a 30-days Card, called TAT (only for
Metro), of unlimited trips in the zone you

All around the city one can also find many gardens and green areas to enjoy leisure such as

Besides the sport facilities in the “Universidad
Politécnica de Valencia”, the city of Valencia
offers sport centres all over the city. Among
the most important sport centres are: El antiguo cauce del río Turia, Local sport centre

5.3 Beaches
In the Valencian Region there are 485 kilometres of coastline. Beaches of all kinds can be
found from very long straight beaches to
those in small coves or inlets. The sand is fine
and golden and, on some beaches you can find
fine, clean gravel. All beaches have a splendid
climate and light.
In the north of the port of Valencia are the
beaches of “Levante”, “Arenas” and
“Malvarosa”, the closest ones to the city, and
the easiest to get by public transport. Typical
restaurants can be found here, where you can
taste exquisite Valencian dishes.
In the south of the city, there is the beach of
“Pinedo”. About eight kilometres away is the
beach of “El Saler”, which is situated in an area
of great ecological interest, with the “Albufera
lake”, extensive pine trees, and one of the
most prestigious golf courses in the country.
All along the coast of Valencia you can find
beaches distinguished by the blue flag of the
European Union, thus showing their cleanliness and quality of services.

concerts regularly during the year. Once a
year, the “Certamen Internacional de Bandas
de Música” is held, this Festival keeps a great
tradition alive all around the Valencian
Province.
Pop-rock music concerts are also organised,
where a large variety of Spanish and
International artists perform their live music.
Art lovers ought to visit museums or a large
number of art galleries where temporary exhibitions are held, of which there is a large number in the city
The City of Arts and Sciences is situated next
to the old bed of the river Turia, in the area
between the Saler highway and the Moreras
road; with a surface of 350.000 m2. It has four
great areas: the Art Palace, a plurifunctional
building for the development of cultural activities of all kinds; L’Hemisfèric, CinemaPlanetarium with the latest technological
systems; the Science Museum, that will house
exhibitions of subjects related to science and
leading technology; and the Universal
Oceanographic Park, a big urban park with
two aims: first, intended for promenade and
relax, and second, for leisure and fun with the
diffusion of underwater principal aspects.
5.4 Sports
Fallas is our Valencian main festival. It takes
place once a year from the 12th to the 19th of
March. There is a rich explosion of colours,
noise and gunpowder smell. Artistic monuments called Fallas, plenty of colours and satire, are all around the city. Music and people
dressed with typical costumes parade through
the streets. Magnificent fireworks, together
with “Mascletás” (daytime fireworks displays)
and the flowers' gift to the Virgen de los
Desamparados are important events. Hot chocolate with “buñuelos” (a typical kind of cake)
are typical of this festival. On the 19th of
March, all the fallas are burnt, and the experience is unforgettable.

European Students are covered by the
European Health Card, Form E-128, or E-111,
which are issued in the country of origin.
The Office of International Exchange
Programmes (OPII), at the Universidad
Politécnica de Valencia, offers a service to
regulate the stay of the Students in Spain.
There are other countries that are not part of
the European Union but with which the
Spanish State has a health agreement, as:
Andorra, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Panama,
Paraguay, Peru, Sweden, Morocco, etc. In these
cases, you will have to contact the Spanish
Embassy in order to obtain further information.
If you are not interested in the previous option
(Public health System)or if you come from
another country, you can obtain a private
health insurance which will cover you in Spain.
The cost may vary, as it changes according to
the service obtained.
It is very important for the student to clarify
health insurance conditions before leaving his
country. The “Universidad Politécnica de
Valencia” will not admit students if they do not
produce their medical insurance documents.

The Universidad Politécnica de Valencia issues
for ALL Students a Student Card, known as
Carnet De Estudiante de la “Universidad
Politécnica de Valencia”, which allows the use
of all the services and facilities of the
“Universidad Politécnica de Valencia” under
the same conditions as Spanish students. With
this card, you can get discounts in many places as cinemas, theatres, etc.
The Valencian government (Generalitat
Valenciana), with the help of the IVAJ
(Instituto Valenciano de la Juventud) offers to
students under 26 the Carnet Jove (known in
Europe as the Under 26 Card) it offers some
discounts at cinemas, theatres, accommodation, shops, transport, etc. It can be used in 28
European countries. It is valid for two years, a
passport picture and a payment of 7.14 g, are
required. Your Carnet Jove can be issued at:

The IVAJ is run by the Valencian Government,

Spain is member of the European Monetary Union and its currency is the Euro (€).
In Spain, electricity is distributed, by means of
alternating current (AC), with a voltage of 220
volts and a frequency of 50 Hz.
Banks
Banks are usually opened in the morning, from Monday to Friday from 8.30 am to 2.30
pm. During Summer time (July and August) they are opened from 9.00 am to 2.00 pm, from
Monday to Friday. On Vera Campus there are 3 banks located at the Ágora, and another one in
the Building 6B, where you can change foreign currency.
