PASTOR'S NOTES
A sign vs. walking by faith……..My first experience as pastor was at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel
Catholic Church in San Ysidro. It was a great place to
begin learning the way of a pastor. One of the most
challenging experiences I had as pastor was the result
of a kidnapping. A young family that lived just a block
or so from the parish in a large apartment complex was
preparing dinner on a Saturday evening. The kids
were playing just outside the open front door. Two of
the three kids ran into the house for something and
when they returned outside to look for their sibling, she
was not there. They assumed that she had gone inside and was with the mother and father who were preparing the meal. When they were called for dinner they
came inside and were surprised to find that their sister
was not with their parents. The parents asked where
she was and they explained what had happened. The
father than quickly went outside looking for his daughter. After a few minutes he realized something was
very wrong. They called the San Diego Police Department who responded immediately. Unfortunately, no
one had seen anything. Over the next week the parents went from despair, to anger, to hopefulness that
their daughter would return. I met with the parents to
pray and try to offer them consolation. It was a very
sad and painful time for them, and all I could really offer them was my presence in the name of Christ and
His church. Returning from grocery shopping one evening in the second week, the mother looked up at a
billboard, and in the darkness of the evening with the
light shining on it, she felt she saw the face of her missing daughter. She felt it was a “sign” from God that her
daughter was alive and would be returned to her without harm. Within days people were gathering nightly at
the billboard to pray in vigil. Vendors were selling everything from candles to rosaries, and the media was
reporting the purported “sign” on the nightly news.
Naturally, because I was the pastor, I was asked about
the validity of the “sign”. Fr. Bernie and I went to see
the billboard so that we could have a firsthand experience. The lights at the bottom of the sign cast a combination of light and shadows on the billboard. It could
have been interpreted as a hundred different things,
and had been there for months or years prior to the
kidnapping of the young girl. We had to help people
realize that although we could not say that what the
mother experienced was or was not a “sign” from God,
we could say that it was not a “sign” for all the many
people that were now gathering. That in fact, it was the
result of light shining on a billboard. Could God have
allowed this to be a “sign” for the mother? Yes. Could
the mother have read into what she saw because of
her emotional state? Certainly. In the end, time would
tell. Time finally provided the final discernment of the
“sign”. The child was never found; presumed dead to
this day. In our own parish there is such a purported
sign; the appearing of Our Lady on the trunk of a tree.
I asked Fr. Efrain to go and see it, photograph it, and
report back to me. He did, and both of us feel that although we cannot judge the original meaning for the
member of the family who first saw it, we can say that it
is not a “sign” for others. People out of curiosity are
going there hoping to be inspired by a “sign”. This is
natural. However, it might be good to remember what
Jesus said when the people wanted him to produce a
“sign”. He told them no sign, but the sign of Jonah
(meaning his death and resurrection), would be given
them. In a time of faithlessness it is human nature to
want a tangible “sign” of God’s presence. The Lord
who lives within us is present in His Word, the Eucharist, and whenever two or more are gathered in His
name seems happy to call us to the opposite of what
“signs” do; to a living faith!

The Church of St. Francis of Assisi announces the
following job opening: Director, Office of Stewardship
and Development
Job Responsibilities: The Director, Office for Stewardship and Development (DSD) will be responsible for designing, implementing and coordinating multiple programs for ongoing Stewardship in the parish and for the
parish development process (capital campaign – Prepare
Ye The Way). Interaction with committees, ministries and
donors is a crucial part of this position. DSD will manage
the existing information systems related to recognition,
acknowledgement and communication with parishioners
and other donors in an effort to maximize the revenue
streams for the previously noted campaigns. Design and
maintain an ongoing donor relations program. Work effectively with staff and the school development program.
Work closely with and help to maintain the parish ministries as a key component of the Stewardship program.
Position reports to the Pastor of the parish. Maintains
open communications with the Business Manager and
follow guidelines related to the finances of the parish.
DSD will supervise the Coordinator for Development for
St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School.

Education/Experience required: Candidate should
have the following education/experience/abilities:








Stewardship and Development in a religious environment (preferably Catholic).
Previous successful work in a non-profit environment.
Ability to plan, promote and actualize multiple
revenue streams.
Capital Campaigns, Planned Giving, Endowments, Charitable Gifts and Weekly Envelope
Giving.
Communications with varied groups, ministries
and staff.
Ability to communicate effectively with varied
audiences in English and Spanish.
Fluency in English and Spanish, both oral and
written.
Minimum of B.A. in related field.
The ideal candidate will have experience in a Catholic
environment with Diocesan contact. They will have been
involved with various types of campaigns including Capital Campaigns, Planned Giving and Endowment, Annual
Appeals, Weekly Envelope, Charitable Gifts, Event
Driven Fundraising and Children’s Faith. They will have
had exposure to the International Catholic Stewardship
Council or another similar type of organization.

Calling all kids entering grades K-5! It is once again that time of
the year; to attend the annual Vacation Bible School, which will
take place the week of July 11-15.Our theme this year is SonSurf, which focuses on how only Jesus is the way, the truth, and
the life. There will be two bible schools this year. The English
one will be from 9am to noon and the Spanish one will be from
6:00 to 8:30 pm. The cost is $25 dollars per child and 50 dollars for a family of up to 4 children. Registration forms are at
each entrance of the church or at the Religious Ed. office. For

The Women's Ministry Guild is sponsoring a cooking contests to find the best
foods for our Fall Festival that are currently hiding in our parishoners kitchens.
For a $10 entry fee, you cook up your
secret recipes and your fellow parishoners will judge the
"best tastes". Winners receive cash prizes and will have
the opportunity to sell their winning tastes at the Festival.
The winning recipes will also be included in a parish
cookbook planned for 2012.
Our first cooking contest will feature guacamole, salsa,
pork and horchata recipes. Join us Sunday, June 26th,
4-6pm in the parish halls. Bring your featured item and/
or your taste buds and help us find those best tastes!

The Women's Ministry Guild will also be selling food
items to get you through the dinner hour.

Chúa về trời hay lên trời là ngôn ngữ dễ gây ngộ nhận cho nhiều người. Quả thực, khi nói Chúa lên trời, có
nghĩa là chúng ta hiểu Chúa vắng mặt ở trần gian, không còn hiện diện, không còn ở gian trần này nữa. Phụng vụ lễ
Chúa nhật Thăng Thiên hôm nay, một mặt cho ta thấy Chúa về trời, ngự bên hữu Đức Chúa Cha, mặt khác lại cho nhân
loại thấy Ngài có mặt ở trần gian cách đầy đủ nhất hơn cả khi Ngài còn sống.
THĂNG THIÊN LÀ MỘT SỰ TÔN VINH
Về trời hay lên trời của Chúa phục sinh không có nghĩa là một sự thay đổi nơi ở từ mặt đất để về một nơi nào đó
ngoài trái đất, nhưng thăng thiên là một sự tôn vinh. Thăng Thiên là một cuộc gặp gỡ, đi vào thân tình với Thiên Chúa
Cha, được tôn lên làm Chúa. Chúa Giêsu thành Nagiarét mặc xác phàm làm người, ngoại trừ tội lỗi, nay được tôn lên
làm Đức Chúa, nghĩa là cùng được chia sẻ quyền thống trị với Đức Chúa Cha. Mầu nhiệm nằm ở đó, mới lạ ở chỗ đó.
Chính vì thế, nhân loại sẽ không còn ngỡ ngàng tưởng rằng chúa Giêsu được bốc đi, được đưa đi từ điểm này tới điểm
nọ. Đức Giêsu Kitô đã đi tới cùng sự chọn lựa của Ngài như thánh Gioan nói:” Người đã đến nhà mình, nhưng người
nhà chẳng chịu đón nhận”( Ga 1, 11 ). Chúa Giêsu đã đến thế gian rao giảng nước trời, loan báo Tin Mừng nhưng con
người không chịu đón nhận và ngài chấp nhận cái ê chề của cái chết thập giá như một tội nhân dù rằng Ngài hoàn toàn
vô tội: Thiên Chúa Cha đã tôn vinh Ngài lên trên mọi quyền lực thần thiêng, trên mọi tước vị có thể có được, không
những trong thế giới hiện tại, mà cả trong thế giới tương lai( Eph 1, 22 ). Đức Kitô đã được Thiên Chúa Cha tôn vinh và
trao ban cho sự vinh quang viên mãn, tràn đầy( Eph 1, 23 ). Chúa về trời nghĩa là được tôn vinh, nên các tín hữu tiên
khởi luôn tin tưởng Chúa phục sinh vẫn hiện diện với họ không những ở Giuđêa hay Galilêa mà Ngài ở khắp cùng trái
đất, Ngài ở mọi nơi mọi chỗ, Ngài hiện diện trong Giáo Hội. Đoạn Tin Mừng của thánh Máccô ngay trong đoạn cuối đã
xác nhận Chúa phục sinh luôn hiện diện, luôn có mặt dù rằng Ngài đã được đưa về trời, ngự bên hữu Đức Chúa Cha:”
…Còn các tông đồ thì ra đi rao giảng khắp nơi, có Chúa cộng tác với họ, và dùng dấu lạ điềm thiêng mà xác nhận lời họ
rao giảng”( Mc 16, 20 ).
HỘI THÁNH TIẾP NỐI SỨ VỤ RAO GIẢNG CỦA CHÚA PHỤC SINH
Trước khi Chúa về Trời, Chúa Giêsu phục sinh đã hứa với các môn đệ:” Thầy sẽ ở cùng các con mọi ngày cho
tới tận thế “( Ga 14, 18 ). Các tông đồ và Giáo hội luôn tiếp tục sứ mạng của Chúa Giêsu( xem bài đọc I và Bài Tin
Mừng ): nối tiếp những công việc Ngài đã làm ở trần gian, kể cả những việc kỳ diệu lạ lùng như xua trừ ma quỉ, chữa
lành các bệnh hoạn tật nguyền. Giáo Hội không còn bị đóng khung ở một nơi chốn như Galilêa, Giuđêa , hay Giêrusalem, hay chỉ nằm trong một không gian hạn hẹp, mà Giáo Hội tung ra khắp muôn nơi để rao giảng và loan báo Tin
Mừng cho mọi dân, mọi nước, không loại trừ bất cứ ai, bất cứ người nào, bất cứ dân tộc nào.” Vậy anh em hãy đi làm
cho muôn dân trở thành môn đệ, làm phép rửa cho họ nhân danh Chúa Cha, nhân danh Chúa Con và nhân danh Chúa
Thánh Thần”( Mt 28, 19 ). Giáo Hội loan báo Đức Kitô và rao giảng Tin Mừng bằng mọi cách, mọi phương thế miễn
sao có nhiều người được trở về với Thiên Chúa. Lễ Hiển Linh đối với nhân loại, đối với thế giới hôm nay, Giáo Hội
không đứng đó mà ngước lên trời để nhìn, để nuối tiếc, để ngó mông lung, nhưng Hội Thánh phải hoàn thành sứ mạng
Chúa đã trao phó: rao giảng Tin Mừng cho mọi thọ tạo, Tin Mừng cứu rỗi cho muôn dân, muôn nước. Rao giảng không
chỉ bằng lời nói, mà là bằng cả cuộc sống, bằng việc dấn thân, bằng sự chọn lựa rõ ràng. Chúa Giêsu khi tới trần gian
này, Ngài đã không có mặt một cách chung chung, một sự hiện diện có lệ, nhưng Ngài đã hiện diện như Tin Mừng cứu
độ cho con người. Chúa Giêsu khi trao sứ mạng loan báo Tin Mừng cho các môn đệ và cho Giáo Hội, Ngài cũng muốn
mọi người và Hội Thánh có một sự lựa chọn như Ngài vì Chúa đã hứa:’ Lòng các con đừng xao xuyến, hãy tin vào
Thiên Chúa và tin vào Thầy”( Ga 14,1).
Lễ Thăng Thiên, Chúa Giêsu trao cho mọi Kitô hữu một sứ mạng như vận động viên chạy bộ chuyền lửa cho
các vận động viên khác để cuối cùng lửa được châm lên ở sân vận động suốt trong những ngày tranh tài. Lễ Chúa lên
trời cũng giúp Giáo Hội và mọi Kitô hữu suy nghĩ và nghiệm ra sự có mặt của Chúa phục sinh giữa thế gian.
Lạy Chúa Giêsu phục sinh, xin ban cho Giáo Hội và mọi Kitô hữu chúng con được nhận ra Chúa giữa cuộc đời
vì Chúa luôn luôn có mặt ở khắp nơi, khắp chốn. Xin cho chúng con và mọi người đừng chỉ nhìn về trời một cách vu vơ,
xa xôi, mơ hồ mà hãy nhận ra Chúa đang hiện diện giữa mọi người. — (Lm. Giuse NHL, DCCT)

Un signo vs. Caminando con Fe……..Mi
primera experiencia como Párroco fue en la Parroquia de nuestra Señora del Monte Carmelo en San
Isidro. Fue un maravilloso lugar para comenzar a
aprender cómo ser Párroco. Una de las más interesantes experiencias que tuve como Párroco fue el resultado de un secuestro. Una familia joven que vivía
a solo una cuadra de la parroquia en un complejo
grade habitacional estaba preparándose para cenar
la tarde de un sábado. Los niños jugaban frente a la
puerta principal. Dos de los tres niños corrieron dentro de la casa para tomar algo y cuando ellos regresaron afuera, su hermanita había desaparecido. Ellos
pensaron que había ido dentro de la casa y que se
encontraba con su papá y mamá preparando la cena.
Cuando ellos fueron llamados para cenar y entraron
a la casa, se sorprendieron de que su hermana no se
encontrara con sus padres. Los padres preguntaron
que dónde se encontraba y ellos le explicaron lo sucedido. De inmediato, el papá salió a buscarla afuera.
Después de unos minutos, él se dio cuenta que algo
malo estaba pasando. Llamó al Departamento de
Policía de San Diego que respondió de inmediato.
Desafortunadamente, nadie había visto nada. Durante la siguiente semana los padres pasaron por la
desesperación, el coraje, la desesperanza de que su
hija pudiera regresar. Me reuní con sus padres para
hacer oración y tratar de darle consuelo. Fue un
tiempo muy triste y doloroso para ellos, y todo lo que
pude ofrecerles fue mi presencia en el nombre de
Cristo y de su Iglesia. Cuando regresaban de compras por la tarde de la segunda semana, la mama
miro hacia un espectacular, y en la oscuridad de la
noche con la luz alumbrando en el letrero, ella pensó
haber visto el rostro de su hija extraviada. Ella sintió que esa era una “señal” de parte de Dios de que
su hija estaba viva y podría regresar sin ningún daño. Durante días la gente se comenzó a reunir por la
noche alrededor del espectacular para orar. Los vendedores vendían todo como rosarios, veladoras, y la
prensa informaba, cada noche, sobre la supuesta
“señal”. Naturalmente, debido a que yo era el Párroco se me preguntó sobre la autenticidad de la “señal”.
El P. Bernie y yo fuimos a ver el espectacular para
que tuviéramos una experiencia personal de ello. Las
luces bajas del espectacular proyectaban una combinación de sombras sobre la superficie. Las cuales
podrían ser interpretadas de distintas formas y tal
vez allí habían estado antes por meses y años antes
del secuestro de la niña. Tuvimos que ayudar a la
gente a pensar que aunque nosotros no podíamos
decir que lo que la mama había experimentado no
era un “signo” de parte de Dios, podíamos decir que
no era un “signo” para toda la gente que ahora se
estaba reuniendo a su alrededor. Y que de hecho, eso
era un simple reflejo de la luz proyectada sobre el
espectacular. ¿Podría Dios permitir esto para que
fuera un “signo” para la madre? ¡Sí! ¿Podría darse
cuenta la madre que esto pasaba debido a su estado
emocional? Así es. Al final, el tiempo nos lo diría. El
tiempo, finalmente, nos dio un discernimiento final
sobre “el signo”. La niña nunca fue encontrada; hasta
el día de hoy, se supone que murió. En nuestra propia parroquia hay un supuesto signo: la aparición de
nuestra Señora en el tronco de un árbol. Le pedí al P.
Efraín que fuera a verlo, fotografiarlo y me informara de ello. Así lo hizo, y ambos pensamos que aunque
no podemos juzgar el significado original dado por el
miembro de la familia que lo vio por primera vez,
podemos decir que no es “un signo” para los demás.
La gente de afuera va curiosamente allí para ser inspirados por el “signo”. Esto es natural. Sin embargo,
debería ser bueno recordar lo que Jesús dijo cuando
la gente deseaba que El realizara un “signo”: ‘no se
les dará más que el “signo” (dando significado a su
muerte y resurrección) dado a Jonás’. Cuando se carece de fe, la misma naturaleza humana desea un
“signo” tangible de la presencia de Dios. El Señor
que vive entre nosotros y está presente en su Palabra, en la Eucaristía, y cuando dos o más se reúnen
en su nombre, nos llama a lo opuesto de estos
“signos”: ¡a una fe viva!

¡Llamando a todos los niños entre los grados K‐5! Una vez más es la época del año para asistir a la escuela de Biblia de Verano, que se llevará a cabo la semana de julio 11‐
15.Nuestro tema este año es SonSurf, que se centra en cómo Jesús es el único camino, la verdad y la vida. Habrá dos sesio‐
nes de escuela de Biblia, este año. En inglés será de 9:00 am al mediodía y en español será de 6:00 pm a 8:30 pm. El costo es de 20 dólares por niño antes del 18 de junio y 50 dólares para una familia de no más de cuatro hijos. Hojas de registro están en cada entrada de la iglesia o en la Oficina de Ed. “HOY, CONCURSO PARROQUIAL
DE COCINA” (3:30pm)
Con el fin de recaudar fondos para nuestra Fiesta Parroquial tendremos HOY un Concurso de Cocina. Platillos: carne de puerco, salsas, guacamoles, Horchatas, etc. En los Salones Parroquiales este domingo 26 de junio de las 3:30pm a las 6:00 pm. Habrá premios y el costo de entrada para concursar es de $10. Habrá premios en efectivo. Habrá comida de venta: hamburguesas, Hot dogs, refrescos, etc. ¡Traiga a toda su familia! De acuerdo al Reglamento de Bomberos, SOLO se permiten autos y minivans NO TROCAS O CAMINONETAS . Los Ministros de Hospitalidad ayudarán al acomodo de los carros y cerrarán el estacionamiento cuando esté lleno (solo 45 autos). NO SE PERMITE estacionamiento de autos por largo plazo. SOLA‐

En nuestra parroquia, cada sábado, después de la Misa de las 6:30 de la tarde, ponemos en las manos de Dios y de la Virgen a nuestros inmigrantes. Necesitamos orar mucho por nuestros hermanos y hermanas que sufren por esta condición humana, por los que mueren o quedan lisiados por un a vida major; y por todos los que abusan de ellos. ¡Todos estan invitados, en union de sus familias! Proveemos un medio ambiente adecuado
donde los estudiantes pueden crecer espiritual, intelectual, social, psicológica y
físicamente.

El fin de semana pasado y durante la se‐
mana en distintos grupos, personas de la Universidad Estatal de San Diego han es‐
tado invitando a mujeres latinas entre 18 y 55 años de edad a un programa de prevención de enfermedades graves: cáncer, diabetes, presión arterial, etc. Es un pro‐
grama que tendrá una duración de dos años y es gratui‐

Si desea casarse por la Iglesia, los requisitos
más importantes (aunque ya estén viviendo
