elected Speaker

B
ronx Assemblymember
Carl Heastie was elected
as Speaker of the New York
State Assembly on Tues., Feb.
3rd.
In the chamber’s 238-year history,
Heastie becomes the first African
American and first Bronx resident to
hold the position.
He was selected to replace Sheldon
Silver, who was forced to step down
in the aftermath of federal corruption
charges.
The resignation of Silver, who led
the State Assembly for 21 years, was
effective by midnight on February 2.
That evening, Assembly Democrats
unanimously voted to elect Heastie; a full
Assembly vote took place on February 3.
“I am proud of the vigorous
debate and discussion among all
of my colleagues that brought us

to today,” Heastie said in a statement.
As Speaker, considered one of the most
powerful positions in the state’s government,
Heastie will direct the flow of legislation, set
committee assignments and direct budget
negotiations with Governor Andrew Cuomo
and the Republican-controlled State Senate.
Heastie’s path to replacing Silver was
aided on January 30 when Assembly Majority
Leader Joseph Morelle, a Democrat from
Rochester, dropped out of the race.

Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan, conceded
on February 2.
In 2000, Heastie was elected Assemblyman
of the 83rd District, which includes the
Wakefield,
Eastchester,
Baychester,
Williamsbridge and Edenwald section of the
Bronx.
As a legislator, Heastie is perhaps best
known for sponsoring the Wage Theft
Prevention Act in 2011, which installed stiffer
penalties for employers that steal wages from
employees.
He also introduced a bill that increased the
number of green taxis that can accept street
hails in the outer boroughs, and sponsored
Assemblymember Carl Heastie is
the first African American Speaker.
a law that releases domestic violence
victims from lease obligations if it is found
that remaining in the residence would be
dangerous to the victim.
The head of the Assembly’s Labor
Committee, Heastie has long called for
additional increases in the state’s minimum
wage.
Speaking at a breakfast for organized labor
workers in May 2014, Heastie remarked,
“Raising the minimum wage for organized
workers is the key to a good economy for all

Hammer observed with
undivided attention.
At her side was the First
Lady.
It is unlikely that
Hammer’s parents, who
came to the United States
from Guatemala, could
ever have imagined their
4-year-old daughter would come to
share box seats with the country’s
highest dignitaries during the
State of the Union Address.
But that little girl, now all
grown up and a mother herself,
has accomplished this and much
more. She didn’t arrive at her box
seat as the First Lady’s special
guest by chance. Her work with
the environment and research
on events related to rising
sea levels, among other

praiseworthy efforts, have transformed her
into an advocate of national significance.
She agreed with the President’s remarks
that there is “no greater threat to future
generations than climate change.”
As a Latina scientist and activist, and as a
mother and wife, Hammer
knows this first-hand and
works hard at ensuring
that others are engaged as well.
Hammer reflects the strength, the
humanity, the big picture, and the
innumerable values of our
community.
She works
with Moms Clean Air Force
(MCAF), an organization
that has more than 400,000
members across the country.
Their mission is to educate
parents
to
help
them
understand the impacts of
climate change and its consequences on the
health and lives of their children.
For Hammer, the best course of action
for parents and anyone concerned about the
future and wellbeing of children today is to
engage those who have the power to make
change and urge upon them
the importance of using energy
conscientiously – and that
includes individual effort.
She makes clear that we
each have to make a difference
towards diminishing environmental impact
and stopping climate change.
“Working as a scientist, I encountered
information about climate change that
struck my heart and concerned me more as a
mother when I realized what kind of future
we are leaving for our children,” she says. “I
believe all parents have to seriously consider
problems surrounding climate change, and
use their voices to protect our children’s
future.”
She specifically cites the urgency of
limiting greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S.
to improve air quality, and says it is imperative
to call upon our leaders and elected officials
to join in protecting the environment.
But it is not up them alone.
Each one of us can take actions that will
help sustain our
planet.

con atención las palabras del líder
estadounidense.
Es poco probable que, cuando los
padres de Hammer llegaron a Estados
Unidos años atrás procedentes de
Guatemala, imaginaran que su hija,
entonces de solo cuatro años, compartiría
palcos con los más altos dignatarios de
la nación, en eventos de la trascendencia
que ostenta el discurso del Estado de la
Unión.
Pero Hammer logró eso y mucho más. Ella
no llegó a esa silla el pasado 20 de enero,
como invitada especial de la primera dama por
casualidad, su trabajo por el medio ambiente y su
entrega al estudio de los fenómenos relacionados
con el aumento del nivel del mar, entre otras
loables labores, la han convertido en una líder.
Ella está de acuerdo con lo expresado por
el presidente en su presentación del Estado de
la Unión, cuando advirtió que no hay “mayor
amenaza para las futuras generaciones que el
cambio climático”. Eso lo sabe Hammer, una

desde allí encamina sus esfuerzos para lograr
que, a través de la educación, otros padres
entiendan el impacto que tendrá el cambio
climático en la vida y la salud de nuestros niños
y actúen en consecuencia. Para ella, lo mejor
que pueden hacer los padres y todos aquellos
que se preocupan por el futuro y bienestar de
los niños de hoy es llamar la atención de los
líderes, de aquellos que tienen el poder de hacer
cambios, sobre la importancia de usar la energía

Hammer representa sin duda la capacidad que
tenemos los hispanos, como comunidad, para
hacer la diferencia, disminuir el impacto ambiental
y detener el cambio climático. Ella es la prueba
de que es posible.
“Trabajando como científica encontré
información que me tocó en el corazón como
madre, entonces estoy muy preocupada por el
cambio climático pero mucho más por el futuro
que le vamos a dejar a nuestros hijos, yo pienso
que todos los padres tienen que tomar en serio el
problema del cambio climático y deben usar sus
voces para proteger el futuro de nuestros hijos”,
señaló Hammer, llamando la atención sobre

Give Kids a Smile Event

provide free preventive dental
care and, if necessary, make
referrals for continuing treatment
for children ages 12 and under as
part of National Children’s Dental

A one-day program called Give Kids a
Smile will be held on Friday, Feb. 6th (from 9

The Give Kids a Smile program is part of
The American Dental Association’s annual
push to bring attention to the number one
childhood disease: tooth decay.
Children who come to the St. Barnabas
Hospital dental clinics on February 6th will
receive a comprehensive dental exam, oral
healthcare instruction, fluoride treatments,
and free dental hygiene materials including
toothbrushes if they have made an
appointment. Walk-ins will receive a dental
screening and toothbrush.
“This event is particularly meaningful to
many local families in The Bronx,” said Dr.
Dara Rosenberg, Director of the Department
of Dentistry at St. Barnabas Hospital. “All too

often, pediatric dental care ends up falling by
the wayside because of other priorities and
economic realities, as well as the mistaken
belief that ‘baby teeth’ don’t matter. This
can be a serious problem as failing to do the
kind of preventive care for children that can
eliminate tooth decay can lead to a lifetime
of dental and oral health problems, as well as
various medical issues.”
It has been estimated that nearly 50 million
school hours are missed every year because
of dental pain.

ahead of time to make an appointment at the
dental clinic most convenient to them.

Standing Down
his spring, the New York Public Library will host Standing Down,
a Reading Discussion program for veterans, at five branch
libraries.
In this program, veterans explore a series of texts
from the Great Books anthology “Standing Down,”
ranging from Plato to poetry about the conflict in
Iraq to personal essays about serving in World War
II. With the guidance of a skilled facilitator, the group
reflects on big ideas and themes of the readings as well
as their own military service and return to
civilian life.
The NYPL will be hosting Standing Down
at the following branches in the Bronx and
Manhattan: Morris Park, Bronx Library Center,
Hamilton Grange, Bloomingdale, and Jerome
Park. In requesting the program, the Library
felt that “veterans are a largely hidden group
within our broader community. The issue of
rebuilding a non-solider identity after service
can be an issue that is incredibly challenging
and may take years to accomplish.”

Polar Plunge
O
n Sat., Feb. 14th, dozens
will join the Bronx Polar
Bears for a plunge into the brisk
waters of Orchard Beach. The
plunge will help BronxWorks
and BronxNet bring awareness
to the issue of homelessness,
particularly street homelessness. Participants will bring new
socks, gloves, hats and other
items to donate to BronxWorks.
Others who will not participate in
the plunge itself are encouraged
to do the same and can view a
link on the BronxWorks website
for additional information:

Many factors may lead to individuals
becoming homeless, including traumatic
experiences,
mental
or
emotional
conditions, alcohol or substance
abuse, and prolonged
joblessness.
Homeless
men and women struggle
to find a warm and safe
place where they can lie down for a night’s
sleep. Deep sleep, which is essential to
good health, is impossible and safety is
often a concern.
Each year, the BronxWorks Homeless
Outreach Team (HOT) makes thousands
of contacts with street homeless men and
women, often providing them with a trip
to their Living Room/Safe Haven or a
safe bed at a church that collaborates with
BronxWorks.
This year’s plunge will
address homelessness.

The club was
founded in 2011.
“Street homelessness is a very complex
problem. However, like many of our major
societal challenges, an impact can be made
when people come together. Bronx Works
is very excited about partnering with
BronxNet and the Bronx Polar Bears. We
hope to build on this partnership to raise
awareness of and support to address the
important issue of street homelessness in
our borough,” said BronxWorks Executive
Director Eileen Torres.
Since 2011, The Bronx Polar Bears have
been joined by Coney Island Polar Bears
and other participants, for the fun, healthy
Valentine’s
weekend
plunge. BronxNet has
helped
organize
the
events and highlight the
festivities on its channels.
As BronxNet Executive Director and
Bronx Polar Bear co-founder Michael
Max Knobbe stated, “The Bronx Polar
Bear Plunge brings people together for
exhilarating fun and fitness at beautiful
Orchard Beach in our borough of parks
in an all-season city. We are pleased that
this year’s plunge is helping to raise
awareness and providing some warmth and
comfort for the homeless.”
The event will begin at 11:00 a.m. with
safety tips from the lifeguard team and
words of inspiration from some Bronx
leaders followed by the plunge at 12:00
noon. Participants will warm up after
the plunge with hot soup provided by
Chef Michael Sherman. A post-plunge
celebration will occur at the Bronx Beer
Hall at 2344 Arthur Avenue near Fordham
Road beginning around 2:00 p.m.
Participants coming from other boroughs
will have access to Orchard Beach via The
Bronx Trolley, which will pick passengers
up on 42nd Street, between Lexington and
Park Avenue at 9:30 a.m.

Charting course for collaboration

T
wo former teachers hope to
launch a new charter school in
the Bronx based on their vision of
education — that students learn
better when they collaborate
and have a chance to voice their
opinions.
Adam Fachler, who taught English in the
borough for several years, and Evan Meyers,
a former high school history instructor in
Manhattan, have devised the concept of
School in the Square, which the men seek to
open in 2016.
The pair is beginning the state application
process for approval as a charter school.
“Our belief is that children have a strong
desire to form relationships and to express
themselves,” said Fachler.
“We want to ensure that children are heard,
have adults that can serve as mentors, and
see school as a second home where they can
explore their own identity with others,” he
added.
School in the Square is based on the concept
of the democratic public square, where people
are allowed to express their views.
One of the school’s hallmarks will be
“voice and choice,” explained Meyers.
“We’ll have weekly town hall meetings,
and students will have an opportunity to
participate in the governance of their school,
like you would find in a healthy democracy,”
he said. “We want to teach students to become
active participants in their community.”
Fachler and Meyers hatched the plan for
School in the Square a little over a year ago,
and said they focused on the Bronx’s School
District 10 because they perceived a strong
need there.
“They’re desperate for more schools in
District 10,” said Fachler. “There’s a lot of
overcrowding.”
In particular, they sensed a lack of strong
middle school options for Bronx students.
“A lot of people refer to middle school as
the ‘forgotten years,’” remarked Meyers.
“In elementary school, students are still
considered young children, and in high school
they’re considered young adults, but middle
school presents some really unique challenges
for learning.” Meyers said that School in the Square
students will do meditation, journal writing
and learn problem solving skills that can be
applied to real-world situations.
“We want to know our students well and
have open communication,” he remarked.
“We want to teach students
to become active participants
in their community,” explains
co-founder Evan Meyers.
Fachler and Meyers are currently exploring
several real estate options to house their
school, and said they are most likely to open
it in the University Heights area.
School in the Square will offer classes in
sixth through eighth grades. The school’s
weekday programming would run from 8am

La pareja está comenzando el proceso de
solicitud estatal para su aprobación como una
escuela charter.
“Nuestra creencia es que los niños tienen
un fuerte deseo de expresarse y de establecer
relaciones”, dijo Fachler.

escuchados, tener adultos que puedan servir
como mentores y que vean a la escuela como un

Fachler y Meyers idearon el plan de Escuela

en el distrito 10”, dijo Fachler. “Hay un mucha

A native son, struck by stars

“T
hey say that people from the
Bronx are creators. I feel
that is so.”
It would be hard to argue the case against
Darrin Henson, who has remained an enduring
figure in film and television since his breakout
role as Lem Van Adams on the Showtime
series Soul Food, the longest-running drama
with a predominantly African American cast
in television history.
2015 will be no different for the talented
actor, dancer and choreographer, as he is
involved in numerous upcoming projects. He is also a published author, with his
second book Ain’t That the Truth out now.
Henson credits his time in his hometown
for spurring him forward.
“Everything was visualized when I was still
living in the Bronx.” Henson recently spoke about his role in the
upcoming film Chocolate City.
“I play Magnus, one of the dancers in the
club,” he explained. “He has actually been
in the club for a while, and there is some
difficulty with new blood. There’s some
tension with the changing of the guard.”
Chocolate City also stars Vivica A. Fox,
Carmen Electra, Michael Jai White, Robert
Ri’chard, Tyson Beckford, and Ginuwine.
He will also star in the film The Choir

feature some of the things that go on behind
the scenes in church.” Another film slated for 2015 is Sons 2
the Grave, which focuses around “an inner
city young man who is very, very talented
and plays basketball,” notes the actor. The
film features “some of the life experiences
that go along with being a talented young
man but not having the financial resources.
[This] puts him in a compromising position.” Henson portrays a detective in the film,
one who has to deal with some unfortunate
situations.
“It is really about cause and effect and the
choices that we make.”
Henson noted that the characters were
realistic depictions that would resonate with
audiences.
“They could be our brothers, uncles,
sisters.”
The bent towards authenticity is evident
not only in his work; it is rooted also in the
recollections he holds dear of his native
borough.
“Zulu Anniversary jams,” is his first
answer as he lists important memories from
his childhood. “Seeing the premiere of graffiti
artists’ works [and] learning how to dance on
fridge boxes.”
There was also inspiration to be mined.
“Just the love that people had for the culture
then,” said Henson of that which served to
motivate his creativity. “[I had the sense]
that opportunity that would unfold for me.” Henson seeks, in turn, to inspire. He will
be hosting Candle in the Dark, the signature
fundraiser for Morehouse College, the
historically black college attended by
scores of legendary African-American men,
including the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “I was thankful and honored to be called
back to Morehouse College. This will be
the second time I will be speaking [there]. To be invited back for the second time is
wonderful.” The time spent with the young male
students fuels him, he said.
“It’s always insightful and informative,”
he remarked. “[They] are working to expand
the consciousness of young black men in
America.”
Henson is known for maintaining in peak
physical condition – as evidenced by his
fitness videos and his stints as a dancer and
choreographer.
It is no easy task.
“I run about five miles a day. I box, I lift
weights, and I try to eat right.” That commitment is part of a larger
philosophy.
“If you take care of the body temple, the
body temple takes care of you,” he advises.
As a dancer/choreographer, he worked with
some of the biggest names in the industry,
including Britney Spears and N’SYNC with
Justin Timberlake.
His love for the form endures.
“I still teach dance classes, I dance all the

Green gets the win – and goes White

I
t was an international exchange
– of tasty proportions.
Children from two elementary schools in
the Bronx and a private school from Mexico
joined together – with the White House – for
a multiethnic celebration of health this past
Tues., Jan. 22nd at PS 55.
Stephen Ritz, Founder of the Green
Bronx Machine, a Bronx-based organization
focused on healthy eating, served as host to
a gathering of schoolchildren from PS 55,
the Hyde Leadership Charter School, and the
Instituto Thomas Jefferson of Mexico.
They were joined by a number of special
guests, including White House Executive
Pastry Chef William Yosses.
“Today we are bringing the White House to
the Bronx,” said Ritz.
The event was part of an ongoing
collaboration between the schools, Ritz and
Yosses in an effort to promote wellness across
all borders.
Last June, Chef Yosses invited students to
the White House and took them on a personal
tour of the White House kitchen.
“I like to work in the White House, but I
also love to have kids learn how to cook and
eat well,” said Yosses.
“My job is to inspire healthy living all over
the world,” added Ritz, who is responsible
for the school’s Tower Gardens, the indoor
edible gardens, where 37 different fruits and

Ritz’s slender frame belies that he was once
overweight. But after drastically changing his
eating habits, he dropped 150 pounds.
He still keeps one of the t-shirts from those
days – and he is proud not to wear it anymore.
“I am growing healthy students,” said
Ritz. “We are trying to build something great
around the world.”
Both the Bronx and Mexico have some
of the highest child obesity rates and health
issues in the world, which helped spur the
partnership.
On Tuesday, tables were set up with fresh
ingredients from the Green Bronx Machine’s
tower gardens. The children were handed
knifes, aprons and hats and led in a culinary
demonstration in which they prepared
vegetable tacos. In attendance also was Nickelodeon and
Disney actor Reed Alexander.
While most know the young actor from
Nickelodeon’s iCarly and Sam & Cat,
Alexander serves a spokesperson for the
American Heart Association and the Clinton
Foundation’s anti-obesity program called
Alliance for a Healthier Generation.
He is also an Ambassador for the First
Lady’s “Let’s Move” wellness initiative and

l Nuevo Bohío a primera vista puede
parecer el típico restaurante Latino
Caribeño.
Como muchos, el restaurante se especializa
en comida dominicana y puertorriqueña, y en
el aire hay los familiares olores de sofrito y café
recién molido.
Pero hay más en la aromática historia.
Inmigrante de la República Dominicana,
su dueño Fausto Enrique se hizo cargo del
restaurante, el cual se traduce a “The New Hut”,
dos años atrás.
Enrique, bodeguero por muchos años,
era relativamente nuevo en el negocio del
restaurante.
Pero no era ningún novato.
Enrique rápidamente se movió a maximizar
la experiencia del cliente tan pronto entró.
Tres pantallas giratorias muestran a gran
escala imágenes de varios tentadores platos
del menú, facilitándole al cliente el hacer sus
selecciones.
También contrató a un artista local
dominicano para pintar coloridos paisajes de su
nativo país y de Puerto Rico para adornar todas
las paredes.
Es un toque personal que implica la niñez
para muchos, incluyendo al mismo Enrique.
“Cuando niño, yo también solía hacer
eso”, dijo Enrique, refiriéndose al mural
representando una mujer cargando grandes
barriles de agua en una mula. “Todos los días,
desde que tenia 8 años de edad, tenia que
viajar más de un kilómetro para buscar agua”.
Enrique también renovó el menú,
asegurándose que hubiese un plato para
satisfacer su apetito – no importa la hora o el
antojo.
Hay huevos, preparados de cualquier manera,
con grandes complementos de tocineta,
jamón, cerdo, salchicha pavo o carne; tortillas,
panqueques y tostadas francesas para la
selección de la mañana.
Para almuerzo y cena, hay platos de pollo y
cerdo asado, y ‘pepper steak’ que son servidos
con arroz blanco y habichuelas, tostones y
ensalada. Los mariscos se hacen por orden, y
hay saludables sopas y mofongos.
Todo el día se preparan emparedados y
hamburguesas, y se está buscando una comida
más aventurera, el menú también ofrece

“Lo hacemos nosotros”, dijo Enrique. “En lugar
de utilizar sofrito artificial, lo hacemos desde el
principio”.
Además, la comida es preparada diariamente
fresca.
“No reutilizamos ningún alimento”, explicó. “Lo
que queda, lo desechamos”.

asegura que sus empleados se adhieren a la
misma filosofía de servicio.

Peña.
“Me gusta compartir con la gente”, añadió

Con un ambiente familiar, el restaurante atraer

G
ood afternoon.
I am honored to have earned your
support to be elected as the new Speaker
of the New York State Assembly.
I am known as a man of few words, so
I will keep my remarks brief.
This will probably be the longest
speech I have ever given.
We gather here today during a
turbulent time for this institution.
The
resignation
of
the previous
speaker has brought
about change in the
leadership of this
house.
And this change in
leadership will bring
about much needed
reform.
Let me state here today that the
overwhelming majority of members
of this legislature are men and women
of integrity and honor who came here
to serve their districts with the sole
purpose of improving the lives of their
constituents.
Having said that, there’s no question
the actions of a few have given cause for
cynicism to the people we serve.
Through reform and action we will change
this cynicism into trust, once again.
I want to thank every member, who,
during the past two weeks, has given me the
opportunity to talk with them and forge a
blueprint for the future of the State Assembly.
I am particularly grateful to those
outstanding members of this body who
actively participated in discussions about the
leadership of the Assembly.
I want to recognize: Assemblymembers
Keith Wright, Joe Lentol, Cathy Nolan, and
my good friend, Joe Morelle.
I have spent all of my legislative
career doing what I am most
comfortable doing – listening
before I build consensus and take
action.
I have listened to my colleagues
and to leaders across the state,
who understand that our state
deserves a government as good as its people.
What I hear from them is a call to continue
making the Assembly the place where we
fight for working families.
What I hear from them is a commitment
to an agenda of expanding the middle class,
creating good-paying jobs, ensuring access
to healthcare and housing, and preserving the
rights of every New Yorker, no matter their
appearance or origin.
The time
is here for
us to act.
And most of all, what I hear is that we
must settle for nothing less than real, clear
reform to make this chamber a place of pride
once again. On these points, you have my unwavering
commitment.
The need for reform in Albany did not
begin in the last few weeks.
For years now, there has been a call for
bringing sunlight to our capital.
And the time is here for us to act.
We need to democratize our legislative
process. We need to take advantage of the
talent and skills of every single one of our
members, from the most senior member to the
those recently elected.
We have to reform the way we regulate
legislators’ outside income.
We must raise their wages so we can fairly
compensate our members as we attract the
best and brightest minds in our state.
And, we have to address the issue of per
diem pay.
We have to make sure tax payer money is
spent carefully and transparently. There must
be accountability.
Never again can there be a question
about the integrity of our members, or this
institution. Through a beefed up Steering Committee
and a newly established Policy Review
and Analysis Work Group, every member
will be fully informed and will have a real

say on legislation that will come before

Just as important: we will double down
on our efforts to create a work place that
is safe from harassment.
Whether you are a powerful member,
a part-time staffer, or a volunteer, there
will be a zero tolerance policy for those

uenas tardes.
Me siento honrado de haber ganado
su apoyo para ser elegido como el nuevo
presidente de la Asamblea del estado de
Nueva York.
Soy conocido como un hombre de pocas
palabras, así que voy a mantener mis
observaciones breves.
Este será probablemente el
discurso más largo que haya
dado. Nos reunimos hoy durante una
época turbulenta para esta
institución.
La dimisión del presidente
anterior ha provocado cambios
en el liderazgo de esta Asamblea.
Y este cambio en el liderazgo traerá la
reforma tan necesaria.
Permítanme decir hoy y aquí, que la
abrumadora mayoría de los miembros de
esta legislatura son hombres y mujeres de
integridad y honorabilidad que llegaron para
servir a sus distritos con el único propósito de
mejorar la vida de sus electores.
Dicho esto, no hay duda de que las
acciones de unos pocos han provocado que

A paralegal for over 17 years
until December 2010, she has
since been dedicating her time to
exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm are
indefatigable, and admirable.
“I want to make my fellow
residents aware and informed of
how lovely our borough is, what it
offers, and how to lend a helping
hand in our environment.”
Of this new time in her life,
Martell says, “I have never felt so
alive.”
The Bronx River is New York City’s only
fresh water river. It runs approximately
23 miles from its source at the Kensico
Reservoir in Westchester County to the East
River between the Soundview and Hunts
Point neighborhoods. It is the river that
you see within the parameters of the New
York Botanical Garden and Bronx Zoo. In
recent years, greater access to its waterfront
has been created, and there have been parks
founded that have meant new opportunities
to experience the River firsthand. Among
these are Shoelace Park, Starlight Park,
Concrete Plant Park and Hunts Point
Riverside Park.
What a change from my childhood.
Then, the River was truly an open sewer.
Cars, refrigerators and tires were carelessly
dumped, and it took the effort of concerned
citizens to begin the restoration work that
we all benefit from today.
Still, there is work ahead.
Despite the return of natural wildlife,
the river is still not safe enough to
swim in. While fishing is encouraged,
it is not advised that you consume
your catch due to the water’s quality.
And one of the major problems is
the combined sewer outflows (CSO).
When storm water is captured, it mixes
with raw sewage, creating too much
water for treatment plants to handle. The
water, including raw sewage from our
toilets and sinks, is then discharged into
our waterways through the CSO system.
When the system was designed, no one
anticipated the growth of the Bronx. We
now have some 1.4 million residents in
our borough, and this takes a toll on our
waterways.
As new developments spring up across
the Bronx, and we continue to grow within
the borough, our waterways will still need
to be protected.
The New York City Department of
Environmental Protection is working on
a Long Term Control Plan for the Bronx
River. Its first public meeting will be held
on Thursday, February 12, between 6 p.m.
to 8 p.m. at Casita Maria Center for Arts
and Education, located at 928 Simpson
Street, 6th Floor.

The 60’s were a period of social change
in American history. Benedict J. Fernández,
a Puerto Rican and Italian photographer
from East Harlem, captured powerful and
emotionally resonant moments of America
during this decade. This exhibit includes
vintage prints and never-before-seen work
prints from Fernández’s archives, and was
curated by the Bronx Documentary Center.
It is being presented in collaboration
with the Bronx Music Heritage Center.
Viewing hours are Mondays, Tuesdays and
Thursdays from 2:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. “The
60’s: Decade of Change” is showcased at

In preparation for the charter school
application process, the men have spent
the past several months obtaining feedback
and attempting to gain support from the
community.
They’ve done it the old-fashioned way, with
a lot of knocking on doors, shaking hands and
by attending Community Board meetings and
numerous church services.
“It’s been a joy to get into the community
and to network with people and get to know
them,” said Fachler.
School in the Square has already formed
partnerships with East Side House Settlement;
Facing History and Ourselves; and City
Pathways, all local nonprofits that provide
educational resources to the South Bronx.
The men said they are well aware of the
criticisms often levied at charter schools,
primarily from those who worry that charters
divert resources and physical space away
from district public schools.
They hope to convince the community of
School in the Square’s merits, and that they
will be offering an improved environment for
local students to excel.
Right now, Fachler and Myers are readying
for New York State’s initial deadline for
charter school applications on February 10.
If they make it past that round, a second
application round is held in March, where
full organizational and educational plans are
submitted.
The two remain hopeful that they’ll make
the cut in a competitive environment, as room
for new charter schools is extremely limited. The two are
seeking to open
School in the
Square in 2016.
Only 460 charter schools are allowed in
the entire state, and New York City is close to
reaching its maximum allocation of 256.
“At the end of this process, we hope that
we are successful in bringing our school to the
youth of the Bronx,” said Meyers.

Dishes.
“You guys may not know that I am very
passionate about eating right,” said Alexander.
“A couple of years ago I was really tired,
sluggish, and I realized that I wasn’t eating
right or exercising.”
He began to watch cooking shows and
learned more about how the contents of his
diet could help sustain his energy. That led
him to create Kewlbites.com, “to get the
message out about health and wellness.”
He was 14 at the time.
Now 20, he remains an avid advocate for
healthy living.
Councilmember Vanessa Gibson echoed
his call.
“What you eat is very important,” said
Gibson to the students. “We want all of you to
make better decisions.”
As the chefs prepped, Chef Yosses urged
them to take care in their work.
“This is serious, and it is also serious fun,”
he said. He warned children against being
careless as they worked in the kitchen with gas,
knives, fire, and other hazards. “Mindfulness
is very important in the kitchen.”
The student chefs readily offered their
feedback.
“This is awesome,” said PS 55 fourth grader
Malick. “We are going to have a chance to be
chefs.”
The event also served to unveil imminent
plans for the National Health, Wellness and
Biodiversity Center, yet another fruit of the
collaboration between PS 55 and the Green
Bronx Machine. Based on site at PS 55, it is

The collaboration is
between three schools.
intended to serve as a workforce development
training center for adults and community
members after school as well as an open
access center for professional development. It
will also feature the first indoor commercial
farm utilizing Tower Garden technology,
courtesy of the sponsor, the Juice Plus
Corporation. The facility will be net positive
on food and energy, as it will run on solar
power and bicycle generators.
And it was recently awarded Best of
Green Schools Transformation Award by
the U.S. Green Building Council/Center
for Green Schools, one of only ten national
award winners. Within the next few months,
a teaching kitchen, propagation area, and
interactive computer center will be installed,
and there will be hands-on activities for
students, teachers, parents complete with
before, during and after school programming,
evening, weekend and summer training and
community workshops.
“I think this is positive for the children,”
echoed Roberto Garay, from the NYPD’s
Community Affairs Bureau. “We need to
teach them what are nutritious foods.”
PS 55 Principal Luis Torres expounded
on the importance of bringing awareness to
students.
“In communities like this there are not a lot
of fresh produce available for children,” he
noted. “[Here], we teach them how to grow
their own vegetables.”
Torres spoke from experience.
As a child, the Bronx native’s diet was
loaded with unhealthy foods, such as chips
and soda.
“I eat better now,” said Torres. “And I feel
better.”
And they’re not stopping any time soon.
After Chef Yosses showed the students
pictures of the last visit to Pennsylvania
Avenue he had helped coordinate, Principal
Torres made a promise, one that would take
place outside of the Bronx.
To unanimous cheers, he pledged, “We
are going to make arrangements for P.S. 55
students to go to the White House.”

Complaints will be dealt with swiftly,
fairly and with transparency.
As we find ourselves at a critical
juncture, we must maintain our resolve
to move our state forward, even as we
reform this institution.
We have to move quickly to
complete the job the people of New York
State sent us here to do.
We must now move to enact an on
time budget that is fair to everyone. We have a minimum wage to raise;
a women’s equality agenda to pass;
a Dream Act to enact; and a criminal
justice system to reform.
We have an environment to protect,
good-paying jobs to create, and children
to educate.
Because the challenges are great and
your spirit is willing, I am particularly
grateful for the trust that you have placed
in me to lead this institution.
For a Bronx boy who majored in
applied mathematics and statistics,
this is one probability that I could have
never forecast.
I mention the Bronx because of the
pride I have in my district and my
borough and because I know that I would
not stand here today without the very
special community that raised me and
inspired me to serve.
It is a community of family and friends
who showed me that anything is possible

when you work hard, chase after your dream,
and refuse to give in to long odds.
Friends, as we have seen, even the longest
lasting powers move on.
Even the most seemingly immobile
structures give way.
We do not own this house.
We are simply tenants here.
And as the present occupants of this
chamber, we have a sacred duty to honor
its history, improve its standing among our
citizenry and above else create a legacy
of results that will attest that we left this
chamber – and our state – better than when
we inherited it.
This is my vision.
This is our calling.
And this will be an Assembly that’s
stronger than ever and a New York State that’s
prosperous for all.
Lastly, as I thank my family, my sisters,
and my beautiful daughter Taylor, I cannot
help but nod to my parents, who are no longer
with us.
They instilled in me a set of values that
have allowed me to stand before you today.
And, on personal note, I cannot help but
note that today’s second resolution before this
house is a resolution honoring the life and
legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. His sacrifices, his courage, and his belief in
equal rights are the foundation on which I
stand today.
Thank you Dr. King for making this day
possible.
