The Energy Conservation Kit items can save your family at least $60
Take the Bright Students Energy Pledge by completing, detaching, and returning the Pledge Card below to your teacher. In return, TEP will give you the following energy conservation items for use in your own home! 13W and 23W Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs) CFLs are much more efficient and last up to 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs. Light output is now commonly measured in lumens. The 13W CFL produces 900 lumens, the same amount of lumens as a 60W incandescent bulb. The 23W CFL produces 1600 lumens, the same amount of lumens as a 100W incandescent bulb. By installing the 13W and 23W CFL light bulbs, you can save up to $10 per year and almost $100 in electricity costs over the lifespan of the bulbs. Many TEP customers just like you have already made the switch to CFLs! Important Note: Whenever you need to discard a CFL that has burned out, DO NOT throw it in the trash. Instead, take it to any Home Depot or Lowe’s, where they will dispose of it properly for free. LED Night-light Light emitting diode (LED) night-lights are considerably more efficient and longer lasting than incandescent night-lights. This 0.25W LED night-light will last over 10 years and costs only 64 cents a year to operate. Please note that the only way to turn off the LED night-light is to unplug it from the wall. 6-Outlet Power Strip: Many household electronic devices consume what is known as a “phantom” or “ghost” load. That is, the device still uses electricity when plugged into the wall, even if it is turned to “off.” Using a power strip to turn off multiple electronic devices together can save time and electricity. Your home computer, laptop charger, TV, DVD player, video game console, printer, cell phone charger, and game device chargers can all draw low amounts of electricity when not in use. Consider plugging them into a power strip and only turning them off at night. You could save money and increase the lifespan of your devices. Items that constantly need to be on, such as cable boxes, should not be used in a power strip with items that can be regularly turned off. Bright Savings Tips for Families Magnet This magnet has many other easy-to-implement conservation tips. Place it on your refrigerator or anywhere else that family members will read it to remind them to conserve! Low-Flow Showerhead By installing this low-flow (2 gallons per minute) showerhead, the average family can save over 3,000 gallons of water annually. In addition, the showerhead will result in savings of at least $25 (gas water heater) or $35 (electric water heater) per year. To install the showerhead, use your hands and/ or a wrench to unscrew the old showerhead (counterclockwise). Then, wrap Teflon tape (included in the kit!) around the exposed threads of the pipe, winding the tape on counterclockwise. Finally, install the new showerhead by placing it onto the threads with the tape and screwing it on with your hands and/or a wrench (clockwise). Faucet Aerator By installing this 0.5 gallons per minute faucet aerator, the average family can save over 3,000 gallons of water annually. In addition, the aerator will result in savings of at least $26 (gas water heater) or $36 (electric water heater) in hot water and energy costs per year. To install the aerator, see the instructions packaged with the aerator. Refrigerator Thermometer Card Refrigerators are a large source of household electricity consumption. Many people unknowingly keep their refrigerators set to unnecessarily cold temperatures, which results in wasted electricity use and wasted money. Keeping your refrigerator set between 36 and 39 degrees will still keep food fresh but will save considerable amounts of electricity (and money!). To accurately test your refrigerator’s temperature, peel the strip off the back and stick the refrigerator thermometer card to an interior wall of the refrigerator, where it will be easy to read. Close the refrigerator door and wait at least 15 minutes. Open the refrigerator and immediately look at the card to see where the indicator is pointing. Check your refrigerator’s manual to determine how to change the temperature and adjust as needed to bring your refrigerator’s temperature into the “ideal” range. Please note that in order to get an accurate reading, you must read the card as soon as you open the refrigerator door.
