properties of Puerto Rico listed at that moment in the NRHP.
Karen González-Jensen
Karen González-Jensen holds a Master’s Degree in Architecture and
a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Design from the University of
Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus.
Professionally, architect González-Jensen worked during ten years
in the Puerto Rico State Historic Preservation Office (PRSHPO). In
addition to her duties in the evaluation of projects under Section
106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and submitting
nominations to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), she
was appointed as Auxiliary Adviser in charge of the permanent
improvements program of the PRSHPO, responsibilities that
included being in charge of the rehabilitation of various historic
properties within the city of San Juan (among others the Hospital
de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción El Grande and the
Comandancia de la Policia of La Fortaleza) and the coordination
with Canadian firm UMA Engineering, Inc. of the Conservation Plan
and Inventory of Art and Objects at the Palacio de Santa Catalina
(better known as La Fortaleza – the oldest executive mansion still
in use in the western hemisphere, a UNESCO designated World
Her interest for the history of Puerto Rico and its architecture took
her to be accepted in the doctoral program in history of the
University of Puerto Rico, where she completed half of the credits
towards the degree. After a period working in the private sector as
a project manager for commercial construction, architect GonzálezJensen was appointed Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer at
the Puerto Rico State Historic Preservation Office. From that
position, besides sharing responsibilities with the State Officer to
ensure the compliance of the agency with all its legal obligations,
she collaborated with the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation,
with the Secretary of the Interior and with the National Park
Service and other dedicated branches of the federal government in
their mission of preserving the historic properties of Puerto Rico.
She advised, educated, assisted, and trained PRSHPO personnel,
municipal, state, federal and international agencies and the general
public on matters of historic preservation. Also, she managed the
projects related to the implementation of compliance alternatives
for historic properties under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Her interest in history and historic research took her to initiate,
foment and participate of various projects of investigation and
publication of the agency, and to be the editor of the PRSHPO
magazine: Conversa/Conserva, where she also published several of
her articles and investigations.
Through her professional career, architect González-Jensen has
been invited to present lectures to academic and professional
institutions, state and federal agencies and the public in general on
issues related to historic preservation, the history of Puerto Rican
architecture and the urban development of San Juan. Furthermore,
given her experience and expertise, while she worked in
Government she was selected on several occasions to offer
specialized tours to dignitaries and distinguished local and
international officials, professional groups, and even the own tour
guides working at La Fortaleza -the governor’s mansion.
In 2008 she established ARK Consultants in Historic Preservation.
Under that firm, she worked several conservation projects for
clients such as the National Park Service, the Office of the
Superintendent of the State Capitol, the Puerto Rico Conservation
Trust, the Puerto Rico Science, Technology and Research Trust, the
School of Fine Arts, the municipality of Guaynabo, the Office of
Legislative Services of the State Capitol, Caribbean Project
Management, STANTEC and other individuals and corporations.
In addition, architect González-Jensen has stood as the only
architect who has designed, built and monitored projects at Castillo
2
San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristobal (both properties
designated World Heritage Sites by UNESCO) and the only
restoration project of the walls of old San Juan outside the federal
scope (at the San Justo curtain wall). For all of the above, she was
chosen by the US Army Corps of Engineers to monitor the
construction of a breakwater at Fort San Gerónimo.
Since 2013, she shares her knowledge and experience with local
audiences and visitors through Archtours –a tour guide company
established to provide specialized architectural tours based on facts
about the history and architecture of Old San Juan and its
fortifications. More recently, last August, she began to conduct an
internet radio program called Descubriendo Nuestro Patrimonio (in
Spanish, discovering our heritage) that is transmitted through the
radio station of the Ana G. Méndez University System of the
Metropolitan University. An educational and cultural program where
she shares and discusses themes related to Puerto Rico’s history
and heritage.
