In My Weakness, I am Strong
Years ago, as a result of an experiment conducted by an educational institution, children were
separated into groups and labeled as smart, normal, and not-so-smart. The classification had no
scientific basis and was purely informal. But the labels applied to the children in the various
groups were given to their new teachers as if they were entirely accurate. The results were that
teachers expected more and greater things form the smart children and didn’t expect much at all
from those labeled as not-so-smart. In the end, the children’s scores on statewide exams
adequately responded to the classifications that had been made. The end results clearly had
nothing to do with the children’s intellect or abilities, but to the expectations others had of them.
No matter how outrageous this experiment may seem, the reality is that this type of behavior
happens all the time with many people. Since we don’t expect too much from certain people, they
themselves believe they are unable to do anything, the abilities which God gave them become
paralyzed, stifled by the lack of trust and faith they receive from the people around them. This can
also happen often with vocations, since nobody invites them, many young people think they are not
worthy and do not deserve to be called by God to a mission. We could think about our own
children and reflect on the times when we as parents, their teachers or school counselors have told
them they could not do certain things because they were not smart enough or simply be cause they
are Hispanic. Whether consciously or unconsciously, we re impeding God’s work, as well as our
children's own capabilities, paralyzing them so they are unable to bear any fruit. There are also
times when we allow the expectations of others to stop us form doing things. Since they don’t
expect much from us because we are not well known and our true capabilities are ignored, we may
believe such opinions and in the end fail to believe in our own potential.
This is exactly what happened to Jesus in his hometown of Nazareth. Since there was a lack of
faith, he was unable to do anything. He could not perform any miracles. The lack of faith and
belief in others amounts to tying up the hands of god, who called his prophet to a mission and gave
him the ability to respond.
In today’s readings we are presented with two examples which tell us that it is through the call of
God and not what others believe or the obstacles we may find, or even our perception of weakness,
that sends us out on a mission. By recognizing this in ourselves and others, it will give us the
strength and ability to fulfill our mission. We could do things we never dreamed of, as well as
bring freedom and provide others with the ability to fulfill the mission that God has called them to
perform.
For Reflection
Are we aware of the capabilities and qualities possessed by the people around us? Do we see them
as gifts from God, destined to bear fruit? How do I encourage my children and the people close to
me to become all they can be and what God has truly intended for them? How do I sometimes
place limits on myself because I do not see in others a belief that I am able to achieve certain
things?

clasificación no tenía ninguna base científica, y era puramente casual.
potencialidad.
ciertas cosas?
