BEING LIFTED UP
In today’s Gospel, Jesus reminds Nicodemus how Moses had
“lifted up the serpent in the desert.” Then Jesus says, “So must
the Son of Man be lifted up, that all who believe may have
eternal life in him.” The evangelist clearly saw this “lifting up”
of Jesus to mean his crucifixion.
That “lifting up” of the serpent by Moses is described in
today’s first reading. The people were attacked by “saraph
serpents,” and many died. God had Moses make an image of
the serpent and put it on a pole and lift it up. The people who
had been bitten looked at it and recovered.
Jesus “emptied himself, taking the form of a slave.” Lifted up
on the cross, he was despised and seemed the most abject of
people. But it was in embracing this disgrace and painful death
that he became the bearer of eternal life for all of us. His “lifting
up” in shame was also his “lifting up” in glory and triumph.

First Reading — Whenever anyone who had been bitten by a serpent
looked at the bronze serpent, they lived (Numbers 21:4b-9).

YOUTH MINISTER … Mr. Steven Patzke will be speaking at the
Masses today, introducing himself and explaining his program for our
young people … he is inviting all interested people --- young and old -- to meet with him on Sunday, September 21 after the 12 noon Mass
in the meeting room in the Lower Church for conversation and some
light refreshments.
CHARISMATIC CONCERT … today … at 2 pm in the auditorium …
all are invited to sing, to pray and to praise the Lord!
CREMATION … as Catholics, we have permission of the church to be
cremated … the procedure for the funeral is: WAKE SERVICE WITH
THE BODY, FUNERAL MASS WITH THE BODY, CREMATION
and burial as soon as possible after the cremation … we should not
save the ashes at home, bring them to the beach or the mountains or
leave them in the funeral home … the ashes are to be treated with
respect and dignity like a body and be buried as soon as possible after
the cremation.
BAPTISMS … Catholics should have their children baptized and
brought into the church as new members … a parent needs to come to
the rectory with the birth certificate to make arrangements … a parent
need to be registered in the parish and coming to church on Sundays
… god parents need to be practicing Catholics who have received their
sacraments and, if married, married in the Catholic Church … baptism
is not an excuse for a family reunion or a party … it is a formal,
serious initiation into the church by the parents and the godparents for
the child … welcome and then have a party!
SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY … are you scared to make the
commitment? … speak with one of the priests and, perhaps, we can
help you … are you married civilly? … speak with one of the priests

FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS … you might consider purchasing a
niche in our Garden of Hope section in the cemetery these niches are
for cremains and this is a new section that has just be completed and
opened … call the cemetery for an appointment to see the Garden …
also, a reminder to arrange your funeral plans very often there is
confusion and conflict at the time of a death and pre-arrangements
make sense for everyone involved at a difficult time.
PARISH REGISTRATION … you should register in the rectory to
receive your envelopes, parish mailings and other important letters …
if you are over 18, you should register with your own set of envelopes.
PARKING … courtesy counts in our parking lots on Castle Hill
Avenue and Purdy Street … one spot to a customer and no blocking
other cars.
SUNDAY DONATIONS … once again, I ask you to review your
donations and to continue to be generous in the collections … I do not
want to bring in a PROFESSIONAL FUND-RAISER --- the message
is the same --- we need your generosity, your involvement, your
sacrifice and, perhaps, your decision to TITHE in order to support all
that is done here at St. Raymond’s … let’s keep the Mass as the Mass

cremación ... no debemos guardar las cenizas en el hogar, llevar a la
playa o la montañas o dejar en la funeraria ... las cenizas deben ser

SER LEVANTADOS
En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús le recuerda a Nicodemo cómo
Moisés había “levantado la serpiente en el desierto”. Entonces
dice Jesús, “así también es necesario que el Hijo del Hombre sea
levantado en alto, para que todo aquel que crea tenga por él
vida eterna”. El evangelista claramente da a entender que este
“ser levantado” de Jesús se refiere a su crucifixión.
La serpiente que Moisés “levantó” está descrita en la primera
lectura de hoy. El pueblo fue atacado por “serpientes de las
llamadas ‘ardientes’”, y muchos murieron. Dios dijo a Moisés
que hiciera una imagen de la serpiente y la pusiera en un palo y
la levantara. Si alguno era mordido, miraba a la serpiente y se
recuperaba.
Jesús se “despojó de sí mismo, tomando la forma de un esclavo”.
Levantado en la cruz, fue escarnecido y parecía el más
despreciable de todos. Pero fue abrazando esta deshonrosa y
penosa muerte que llegó a ser el portador de la vida eterna para
todos nosotros. Al ser “levantado” cubierto de vergüenza fue
también “levantado” glorioso y triunfante.

Para todos aquellos que perdieron sus vidas
en aquella mañana de Septiembre
los mantearemos en nuestras mentes y oraciones
Así que los recordaremos siempre.
El Señor los ha llevado a su reino,
porque él sabe que creyeron en la
Democracia, la paz y la libertad.
Sus seres queridos deben guardar en su mente
que no estamos aquí para quedarnos,
que nos uniremos en el cielo
y algún día estaremos juntos.
Aunque no perdí parientes
en esa drástica mañana de septiembre,
Me gustaría expresar mis condolencias
y compartir con ellos en el luto.
