As San Antonio grows exponentially for the future, the city
is preparing for the increase
of residents with an upcoming
landmark bond.
Mayor Ivy Taylor, along with
City Manager Sheryl Sculley announced on Tuesday morning
the Tri-Chair appointments for
the 2017-2022 Bond Program as
well as the big plans for the project. The appointments are Eddie
Aldrete, senior vice president of
IBC Bank; Carri Baker, chief of
operations at Linebarger Blair &

appointees. All appointees are
expected to be selected by the
end of July.
The 2017-2022 Bond Program will cost an estimated $850
million, the largest municipal
bond program in San Antonio
history. The bond programs will
include the following categories:
1. Streets, bridges and sidewalks;
2. Drainage and flood control; 3.
Parks and recreation; 4. Facilities
and improvements; 5. Neighborhood improvements.
Mayor Taylor declared that
she is prepared to make the
future Bond Program successful
as she looks around San Antonio
to see what is necessary to make
the city more resourceful, as well
as convenient.
“As I traveled throughout
San Antonio and worked with
neighborhood associations,
businesses and nonprofits who
are dedicated to serving our
residents, I see every day the
real needs of our community,”
explained Mayor Taylor. “I plan
to work with public and private
sectors to leverage assets, rivers, creeks, cultural and educational destinations so we can
accommodate over one million
residents in the next couple of
decades.”
Previous bond programs have
been proven to be successful as
San Antonio carries 4,000 miles
of streets. In the 2007-2012
Bond Program, 75-80 percent
of the funds were used for street
and drainage projects, basic

S.A.’s newest Chick-fil-A
restaurant opens July 28
Local franchise owner Ryan
Roberts will open San Antonio’s newest stand-alone
Chick-fil-A restaurant on July
28, creating 90 new jobs and
a chance for 100 adults to win
free Chick-fil-A meals for a year
and the opportunity for the local community to donate children’s books to Oak Meadow
Elementary.
The family friendly overnight
party is expected to pop up in
the parking lot of the new restaurant at 10503 N.W. Military
Highway, 24 hours before the
grand opening as guests try to
be one of the first 100 adults
through the door to win a year
of free Chick-fil-A meals.
This community event is
open to guests residing in specific zip codes surrounding the
restaurant. A complete listing
of eligible zip codes and rules
can be found at http://www.
chick-fil-a.com/Locations/
First-100.
“My team members and I
can’t wait to welcome our
guests,” said Roberts. “We’re
not just in the chicken business —we’re in the people
business. Our goal is to provide
a remarkable experience for
every customer, every time,
by serving food our guests can
truly feel good about eating,
providing sincere hospitality
and to be a good neighbor to
the area.”
The Chick-fil-A First 100
A tradition going back nearly
13 years, Chick-fil-A’s First 100
celebration has given away
nearly $27 million in free food
through 2015 and continues to
be the chain’s signature grand
opening event. Rain, snow and
extreme temperatures below
zero or above 100 do not deter
Chick-fil-A fans who arrive with
tents, chairs, TVs, computers
and other gear.
Each is hoping to win a
digital offer card loaded with a
one-year supply of free Chickfil-A Meals (52 meals with
each consisting of a Chick-fil-A
Chicken Sandwich, medium
Waffle Potato Fries and a
medium beverage) that will be
awarded to the first 100 eligible adults - ages 18 and older
with identification - in line
when the doors open around
6 a.m. on July 28.
If more than 100 people
are onsite when the line officially opens at 6 a.m. on July
27, a drawing will be held to
randomly select the First 100.
Those chosen will be required
to camp out until the grand
opening to secure their spot.

Mall. His wife, Emily, was
born in Texas and they have
family in Dallas, so the Roberts
are happy to plant even deeper
roots in the San Antonio community.
Roberts received his undergraduate and master’s degrees
from The University of Florida
in Gainesville. After college, he
spent five years working in fulltime youth ministry. In 2008,
Roberts became a stay-at-home
dad while his wife attended
graduate school in Colorado.
After she graduated, he went
back to work as well. Roberts
saw a job posting for leadership positions at his local
Chick-fil-A. He began working
at the restaurant, not intending
it to become a career, but after
one year knew that being an
operator was what he wanted
to do long-term. Roberts continued to work at the restaurant
and was given the opportunity
to join Chick-fil-A’s interim
management program. After
18 months in the program, he
was selected as the operator of
the Rolling Oaks Mall location.
Becoming a Chick-fil-A operator is no small feat. The
company receives some 24,000
applications yearly for approximately 100 franchise opportunities.
Roberts, his wife Emily and
their two children are excited
to continue serving the people
in the San Antonio community
as he transfers to the new Alon
Town Center Chick-fil-A location.
Children’s book drive
Reflecting his desire to continue having a positive impact
on the surrounding communities, Roberts is inviting all First
100 participants and customers
to help celebrate the opening
by participating in a book drive
for Oak Meadow Elementary.
Roberts is collecting new and
gently used children’s books
from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on
Wednesday, July 27, through
close of business on Friday,
July 29. The donated books
will be placed in a nearly threefoot Book House to serve as

Music Latin.

Texas sales tax
holiday is Aug. 5-7
Special to La Prensa
Texas Comptroller Glenn
Hegar reminds shoppers they
can save money on certain items
priced for less than $100 during the state’s annual sales tax
holiday. This year, the sales tax
holiday is scheduled for Friday,
Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 5-7.
The law exempts most clothing,
footwear, school supplies and
backpacks priced below $100
from sales tax, saving shoppers
about $8 on every $100 they
spend during the weekend.
“As families all over our state
prepare to send their children
back to school, we hope folks take
advantage of this opportunity to
get the supplies they need and
save some money in the process,”
Hegar said. “As the father of three
young children, I know how these
expenses can add up. This event
provides Texas families with
some relief from state and local
sales taxes.”
Lists of apparel and school
supplies that may be purchased
tax-free can be found on the
Comptroller’s website at TexasTaxHoliday.org.
This year, shoppers will save an
estimated $92 million in state and
local sales taxes during the sales
tax holiday.

Is weight loss surgery right for me?
By Maria A Palafox, MD
It is difficult to lose weight—
if it were easy, we would all
be skinny, right? Deep down,
most of us know why we are
overweight—wrong food
choices, too much food and
not enough exercise.
But for more and more
people, weight loss surgery
is more often becoming the
answer. There are several
options for surgery, ranging
from a simple band around
the top of the stomach to a
major redo of your plumbing so that you don’t absorb
many nutrients.
Bariatric surgery is not
recommended for everyone
who is overweight and obese;
however, it may be an option
if you haven’t been able to
lose weight with any other
method, or if you have any
medical conditions related to
extra weight, like high blood
pressure, high cholesterol,
diabetes, sleep apnea or arthritis.
Weight loss surgery is only
recommended for the following:
• Severe obesity (BMI>40)
that hasn’t responded to
other weight loss attempts,
like Weight Watchers.
• BMI > 35 with an obesityrelated disease (see above)
that would improve with
weight loss.
• BMI > 30 with a certain
type of diabetes or with a
combination of illness known
as metabolic syndrome.
(BMI = height in inches
divided by weight in pounds)
Different programs and surgeons have different requirements before being approved
for surgery, as does your
insurance. A comprehensive
program will include a visit
with a nutritionist, who will
guide you to healthier eating.
You will also meet with
a mental health specialist,
who will evaluate how you
manage stress and what your
triggers are for overeating. A
medical doctor will evaluate
your overall health and help
you optimize management of
your other health problems.
Many programs also have
an exercise physiologist or
trainer that will design an
exercise program for you.
Finally, there are the surgical options, ranging from
a lap band to gastric sleeve
to bypass. You and your
surgeon will decide together,
based on how much weight
you need to lose. In general,
you can lose about 50 percent
of your excess weight with lap
band, about 65 percent with
gastric sleeve and up to 75
percent with gastric bypass.
The risk of complications
goes up as well among the
different surgeries. Weight
loss occurs over one to two
years, but it will not stay off
if you return to the old bad
habits that made you heavy
in the first place.
The bottom line is this: you
can out-eat almost anything,
even weight loss surgery. Surgery is just a tool for weight
loss; you must be committed
to a healthy lifestyle, not just
until you lose weight but for
life. Talk to one of our local
bariatric surgeons, and see
if this is the right choice for
you.
Dr. Rene Jaso can be
reached at his office at 210226-5350 on S.E. Military
Drive.

Now that the 2012-2017
Bond Program is coming to an
end, Sculley confirms that projects have become successful and
will benefit the next program.
She would also like for many

out of their pocket will not be

“We are recommending a

property tax increase because
we already pay very low interest rates. We have the greatest
credit rating of any major city
in the country,” stated the City

After an extensive public process, citizen committees will
provide a finalized list of recommended projects to the Mayor

Darren Powell: “SAFC nunca se rendirá en la cancha”
Por José I. Franco
[email protected]
En el estadio Toyota Field,
ante una asistencia de 7,690
espectadores (la tercera con más
fanáticos en partidos locales), el
equipo San Antonio FC (SAFC),
afiliado a la liga USL (tercera
división profesional), no logró
contener al potente visitante LA
Galaxy II, apodado Los Dos, di-
rigidos por el entrenador en jefe
Curt Onalfo, que con marcador
de 3 a 2 goles paró la buena
racha de seis partidos sin perder
(entre victorias y empates) en los
que dejó marca de 14 puntos
conquistados, 10 goles anotados
en favor por 5 en contra.
El partido fue sancionado por
la árbitro central Reyna Fonseca,
quien tuvo en las laterales a los
abanderados Tyler Mitcham y
Pedro Trejo Jr. y de suplente a
Juliana Duncan.
El desarrollo del encuentro
tuvo de todo, mucha acción,
faltas al reglamento y oportunidades para el equipo de casa
de empatar y ganar el cotejo.
Lamentablemente sus disparos
al aro fueron contenidos por el
arquero rival Clemen Diop.
Por SAFC, al minuto 3, el
mediocampista colombiano
y capitán Rafa Castillo abrió
el marcador con ejecución de
Darren Powell, entrenador técnico del SAFC.
tiro libre a una distancia de 18
yardas frente a la área grande;
fue un disparo que electrizó a la
fanaticada que pedía a toda voz
un segundo tanto.
La buena fortuna de SAFC se
apagó tras la anotación de tres
goles registrados en la cabaña
cubierta por el arquero suplente
Matt Cardone, quien nada pudo
hacer por atajar sorpresivos
y contundentes disparos de
los hermanos Villarreal (José
y Jaime). José, quien juega al
frente, al minuto 5 aprovechó
asistencia de su hermano Jaime
(mediocampista), poniendo el
marcador 1-1.
“No me encuentro frustrado,
sino todo lo contrario. Puedo
decir que SAFC nunca se rendirá
sobre la cancha. Nuestro rival
(LA Galaxy II) trae en su ali
neación a futbolistas de gran
calidad. Nuestro equipo es joven
y por lo tanto veremos video
de las jugadas claves que bien
nos pudieron dar el empate o la
victoria. Nuestro plan de juego
sigue en pie para los tres partidos
que sostendremos de gira”, dijo
Powell.
Jugadores amonestados con
tarjeta amarilla:
SAFC: Milton Palacios, Rafa
Castillo, Stephen McCarthy,
Michael Reed, Danny García.
LA Galaxy II: Denzel Slager,
José Villarreal, Jack McBride,
Adonis Amaya.
SAFC visitará las plazas de los
equipos Swope Park Rangers,
con sede en Kansas City, Misuri
Republic FC de Sacramento,
California, y Arizona United SC
en la ciudad de Peoria (Arizona),
equipo que pagará visita al
SAFC el miércoles 17 de agosto
en Toyota Field (7:30 p.m.)
