Various behaviors signal intimate partner violence and domestic violence. These
examples do not encompass all of the behaviors used by abusers to exert power and
control over their victim(s).

Varias conductas son señales de violencia entre parejas íntimas y violencia doméstica.


Emotional abuse: humiliation; intimidation; threats; isolating the person from
others; telling the person how to think, act or dress; setting unrealistic
expectations; asking children about the victim’s whereabouts and actions

Abuso emocional: humillación; intimidación; amenazas; aislando la persona de otros;
decirle a la persona como pensar, actuar o vestirse; poner expectaciones irrazonables;


Economic abuse: not having or limiting access to finances, telephone or
transportation; forcing the person to work or not allowing the person to work;
taking control of the person’s money; placing property in the abuser’s name


forzando la persona trabajar o permitirle trabajar; tomando control del dinero de la


Physical abuse: slaps; punches; hitting the person where bruises are not easily
seen; blocking the person’s exit


Sexual abuse: forced or coerced sex; forcing the person to watch a sexual act the
person does not wish to view; pressuring the person to pose semi-nude or nude
for photos; comparing the person to prior partners


quiere ver; exigiéndole tomar fotos parcialmente desnuda o desnuda; comparando la


Spiritual abuse: not allowing the person to practice their religion; using an
upcoming religious event to control the victim; using religion and ‘God-given right’
to control the other person


Abusers often minimize their behaviors or blame the victim. Children are also
victims, as are pets.

