New Release Highlights Romantic Piano Concerto, Vol. 66 - Henri Herz (1803-88) Henri Herz was a phenomenon in 1830s Paris and 1940s America, but today his music is mostly forgotten. He wrote eight piano concertos, one of which was lost. Concertos 1, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8 appear across two previous volumes of the Romantic Piano Concertos series. Here, Howard Shelley and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra put on their finest dancing shoes to complete the cycle with Piano Concerto No.2 (the one with which Herz conquered America in 1846) and three extended fantasies. At the time it was his most ambitious undertaking in the genre of incidental music. The two waltzes of 1921 are transcriptions of piano pieces, and reveal the potent influence of Tchaikovsky. As the oldest orchestra in Finland, the Turku Philharmonic continues to develop and flourish under the baton of renowned conductors. Tuned like the contemporary Renaissance lute, the Spanish vihuela is a guitar-shaped instrument and for it Milán wrote a series of compelling works including fantasias and pavans that maturely fused improvisatory and polyphonic elements. With Manfred Eicher producing, the five Italians recorded a program of Rava originals covering a broad range of moods - from brooding ballad playing to fiery uptempo post-bop. Once again Rava’s playing makes it clear that lightness and intensity, elegant cool and emotional warmth are no opposites. Rava and Petrella form a peerless two-horn frontline, whether playing in unison, engaging in dialogue or taking their turns in extensive soloing. . Stefano Battaglia Trio: In the Morning - Music of Alec Wilder “Cantante e Tranquillo:” Slow Movements for String Quartet, by Beethoven, Kurtág, Schnittke, Ligeti et al. / Keller Quartett On his sixth album for ECM, the Italian pianist and his trio reflect on the work of American composer Alec Wilder (1907-80). Says Battaglia, “I first came into a more direct contact with Alec Wilder’s music in the early ‘90s...after working on Wilder’s chamber music I wanted to develop a deeper connection with his intriguing musical universe, and I’ve discovered an immense hidden treasure.” Almost three years after their last ECM album Songways, Battaglia and his partners Salvatore Maiore (bass) and Roberto Dani (drums) develop an almost telepathic rapport on In The Morning, a live recording from April 2014 at Teatro Vittoria in Torino.
