Notes From the Pastor’s Desk
Second Sunday of Advent
Mark begins his Gospel with the appearance of John the Baptist in the desert. He invites us
to reflect upon the role of John the Baptist, who prepared the way for Jesus and the salvation
that he would bring to us.
Mark's description of the appearance of John the Baptist highlights John's continuity with the Jewish prophetic
tradition. Mark's description of John as an ascetic, living in the desert, clothed in camel hair, and eating locusts and
wild honey, is reminiscent of the description of the prophet Elijah found in Second Kings. The people of Judea and
Jerusalem flock to him, listening to his message of repentance and forgiveness; they also come to him to be baptized.
Mark's Gospel is clear, however, that John the Baptist's role is only to prepare the way for another who will come,
one who is greater than John.
In today's Gospel John the Baptist contrasts his baptism of repentance with the baptism that Jesus will inaugurate. John says that he has baptized with water, but that the one who is to come will baptize with the Holy Spirit.
John's baptism was not yet a Christian baptism, but a preparation for the Sacrament of Baptism through which sins
are forgiven and the gift of the Holy Spirit is received.
John the Baptist is presented to us as a model during Advent. We, too, are called upon to prepare a way for the
Lord. Like John the Baptist, we are messengers in service to one who is greater than we are. Our Baptism commissions us to call others to life as disciples of Jesus.
Fr. Matteo
P. Matteo
2o Domingo do Advento
perdoados e do dom do Espírito Santo é recebido.

EXILE

Divine Mercy Chaplet.
Both Isaiah and Peter had the task of comforting and
encouraging their communities during times of exile. The
Israelites were in geographic exile from Israel; to them this
was, in effect, the same as being in exile from their God.
The early Christians, following the Resurrection, expected
an immediate return of Christ in glory; they, too, felt in
“exile” as the delay of the Second Coming grew longer
and longer. All four of scripture’s authors today—Isaiah,
the psalmist, Peter, and Mark—hasten to help us see things
in God’s terms, not ours. They want us to know that we
can never truly be exiled from God, or from God-amongus, since we know that when the faithful are gathered,
Christ has come into their midst. Instead, we are encouraged today to do what we can from our end to shorten the
time of our exile: to repent of our sins, to return our lives
to the Lord, to live as people who seek the coming day of
the Lord, when “kindness and truth shall meet; justice and
peace shall kiss” (Psalm 85:10).

In today’s Gospel John the Baptist urges us to “Prepare the way of the Lord,” and this is what
Advent is all about. We are called to help prepare the way of the Lord by making the real meaning of Christmas come alive in our own hearts, in our family and to reach out to those in need.
Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the Society of St.
Vincent de Paul so that together we can help the suffering and poor to celebrate
Christmas. Thank You! Call 954-213-4690 for help. To donate household goods, call

Over 35 years ago Sister Camille of The Children’s
Diagnostic Center in Pompano Beach approached St.
Vincent Church requesting Christmas gifts for patients
and their families. Ever since then, as Christmas
approaches, we get a list of names and families. Each
family has at least 1 child with HIV or AIDS. A large
share of these children are born with the disease. Some
have now reached their teenage years and are having a
difficult time coping with their illness. Most have only a
mother, grandmother, or aunt to care for them.
We hope to be able to give each member of these
families two $20.00 or more gift cards from Walmart
or Target. Please be an Angel and take an envelope
from the tree and return it by December 14 with
cash, a gift card or a check made out to St. Vincent
Church marked “Angel Tree” for $20.00 or more.
You cannot believe how much these gifts mean to
these families. Thank you for your help.

Protect them from the physical and moral dangers of military
life. Keep them close to You and help them live the Commandments. Lord Jesus, give them courage to serve their country with honor and dignity. Be with them when they are in

É PRECISO PREPARAR O CAMINHO
O 2º Domingo do Advento faz
um anúncio e lança um desafio
para todos nós. O anúncio é
que Deus, nosso Pai amoroso,
vai realizar novas maravilhas
no meio de nós. Ele inventa
sempre coisas boas para nós. É
isso que dizem as leituras,
principalmente a do livro de Isaías e do Evangelho de
Marcos.
