 A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR 
On Ash Wednesday we discovered what to do when (we) pray, when (we) fast, when (we) give alms. What have
we discovered since?
 The First Sunday of Lent we were led into the desert with Jesus and
discovered the way to defeat temptation. (Leave behind false gods and our
lust for power and fortune.)
 The Second Sunday of Lent we were led up a high mountain with Jesus and
discovered that Jesus is the Son of God. (Leave behind doubt and fear.)
 The Third Sunday of Lent we were invited to sit down and talk with Him at
the well where we discovered food that we didn’t even know we had.
(Leave behind dependency.)
 The Fourth Sunday of Lent we were invited to go to a pool and discover
that Jesus is the Son of Man. (Leave behind our Pharisaical way of seeing
things.)
 On this Fifth Sunday of Lent, we will be invited to a tomb. What will you
discover?
Hopefully you will discover the way to live a
Christianity bandaged up when we go back

OUR HOLY REDEEMER ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH
FREEPORT, NEW YORK
FAITH, GOVERNMENT, AND EDUCATION
EDUCATION TAX CREDIT
by Bishop William Murphy
The New York state budget will be passed this week and, now for the fourth
time in a row, it will be “on time.” As always the lead up to the budget is
intense and involves the leaders of the Assembly and the Senate who hammer
out the final details, and compromises, with the Governor. The Governor is
very proud of his “record” of having four budgets on time.
This is good enough in itself but it has been won at a very steep price – that is a
steep price for Catholics and for anyone other religious and non-governmental
group that cares about religiously-based schools.
The budget includes an increase of 1.1 billion dollars. $300 million goes to Pre-K for New York City schools whose
Mayor earlier said he preferred to get his money by taxing the rich. He’s happy with the state gift. Many more go
to Charter Schools which are also, in a sense, government schools because they are for profit schools with a charter
from the state to make money through offering parents an alternative to the dreadful public schools in places like
the City. Was anyone left out? Yes! (emphasis added) The proposal for an education tax credit available to
individuals and groups who wished to give money to support private and/or public schools was thrown under the
bus. Out of $1.1 billion, the leadership was unwilling to allow $150 million become available to all the religiously
based and other private schools in the whole state of New York! That would have been far less than one percent of
the increase in education spending.
How did this happen? The details are unknown. We do know that, to the end, Senator Skelos was firm in his
commitment and in his support arguing for the education tax credit. We do know that Speaker Silver offered
“extra help” in giving us money we already are owed. He did not support the education tax credit. We do know
that the public teachers’ unions are politically very strong and continue to have a visceral negative attitude to any
school that is not a government school. And we also know that the Governor verbally supported us whenever the
bishops of New York spoke with him (last on March 18) or the Cardinal contacted him. But words are not enough.
One wonders how long Catholic parents will put up with verbal support that gives them no relief, and gives those
helping parents pay tuition to Catholic schools with no incentive, to keep on giving without anything more than a
pat on the back.
We live for another day. Disappointing as this is, we will continue to press for
legislation that allows those who wish to have a tax credit to support religious
and other private schools. We are grateful to all the labor unions and other
groups who joined with us in this effort. I am especially grateful to the
Senators and Assembly members from Long Island, Republicans and
Democrats, who were co-sponsors of our bill. All but two of them in the
Assembly kept their pledge to us!
The Governor asked the bishops at our last meeting which was more important to us, the money or the principle.
We all agreed it is the principle that private and religiously based school in justice should have available a tax credit
for those who support our schools. We will continue to fight for the principle and, from that we will, also in justice,
seek to have the funds for education tax credits for all New Yorkers and not just for some.

NEWS FROM THE DE LA SALLE SCHOOL
(516) 379-8660
Jordy and Jason G., two eighth graders, agreed that the fifth and sixth graders were well prepared for
our recent science fair. All members of eighth grade and seventh grade received a clearly detailed
rubric with which to assess the work of their younger schoolmates. In one-on-one conversations the
budding scientists stood before their presentation boards and each stated his hypothesis, explained the
procedure associated with his inquiry, and reported his conclusion. Members of the faculty also participated in the
assessment process and simultaneously enhanced their knowledge of science.
I was amazed at the intensity and enthusiasm with which the young articulated their experience. Miss Christina Rattotti,
English Language Arts teacher, and Miss Breanna Podmore, Science teacher, collaborated on this assignment. Students
earned a science grade, associated with the implementation of the scientific method, and an English mark, related to the
prose document submitted that described the process. My administrative post provided privileges to the Google Apps for
Education in-house chat room we set up. I was able to follow the development of each student’s plan from conception
through the reception and incorporation of teacher feedback to the final presentation. The entire experience was a
dynamic interdepartmental, technology infused, age appropriate, competency based exercise that successfully engaged
every student at The De La Salle School.

SCRIPTURE REFLECTION
“Lazarus, come out!” (See John 11:1-45). Next week will be Palm Sunday and the week
after, Easter, but today as we approach the end of Lent, Jesus is calling us to take away the
stones that impede our progress. He is challenging us to come out of our tombs. Let us
take stock. Is there anything in our lives that keeps us chained to the old ways? Are we
afraid to come out of our tombs? The tomb could be a comfortable place, warm and
secure. Out of the tomb we have to face the light of day and start living in the light. Some
of us may want to stay in the comfort and security of the tomb, and yet, if we want to be
Jesus’ disciples we must come out! Let us meditate on this. Get ready for the
Resurrection! “Lazarus, come out!”

FAITH AND SOCIAL MINISTRY AND
A WORD FROM SAINT LEO ABOUT “WORKS OF MERCY”
"What is the appropriate time for performing works of charity? My
beloved children, any time is the right time, but these days of Lent provide a
special encouragement. Those who want to be present at the Lord’s Passover
in holiness of mind and body should seek above all to win this grace. Charity
contains all other virtues and covers a multitude of sins.
As we prepare to celebrate that greatest of all mysteries, by which the
Blood of Jesus Christ destroyed our sins, let us first of all make ready the
sacrificial offerings — that is, our works of mercy. What God in His goodness
has already given to us, let us give it to those who have sinned against us.
And to the poor also, and to those who are afflicted in various ways, let
us show a more open-handed generosity so that God may be thanked through
many voices and the needy may be fed as a result of our fasting. No act of
devotion on the part of the faithful gives God more pleasure than the support
that is lavished on his poor. Where God finds charity with its loving concern,
there He recognizes the reflection of His own Fatherly care."

Diocesan Priest, Oblate of the Priests of the Sacred Heart
OUR HOLY REDEEMER has been making Saints in Freeport for over one hundred years and

Venerable Father Anthony Vincent Gallo. Father Gallo was born the seventh of nine
children on 11 January 1899 at Monteforte, Irpino, in southern Italy and died in 1934 at the
young age of 35. His “Saintly” life can be discovered at www.fathergallo.com where the
inspiration will be found to pray for his miraculous intercession on behalf of yourself or
someone you know who is suffering. More information about Venerable Father Gallo,
including a special prayer for his beatification and canonization can also be found in the

Somos verdaderos adoradores y verdaderos sacerdotes.

Hagamos inventario. ¿Existe algo en nuestras vidas que nos
mantiene atados a nuestros viejos caminos?

LAZARUS,
COME OUT!
Jesus raised His eyes and
said, “Father, I thank
You for hearing Me. I
know that You always
hear Me; but because of
the crowd here I have
said this, that they may
believe that You sent
Me.” And when He had
said this, He cried out in
a loud voice, “Lazarus,
come out!” The dead man
came out, tied head and
foot with burial bands,
and his face was wrapped
in a cloth. So Jesus said
to them, “Untie him and
let him go,”
