I t , , , , + []J FRIDAY VIEW ~ Beyond words FILM Lipyantara, a documentary on the acclaimed lexicographer G. Venkatasubbaiah by K. Suchindra Prasad, seeks an entry into the world of words K.N. VENKATASUBBA RAG n his continued effort to document the life and achievements of centu orion and nonagenarian persons of public impor tance, artiste and filmmaker K. Suchindra Prasad is all set to launch· "Lipyantara" as part of the Antara Sarani documentary film series ort August 20 (Sunday) at Bha ratiya Vidaya Bhavan in Ban galore. The occasion marks the 98 th birthday of the ac claimed lexicographer G. Venkatasubbaiah. Under the Antara Sarani, produced by the Dharmad hikari of Sri Kshetra Dhar mastala Veerendra Heggade, Mr. Prasad has already pro duced five documentary films. The earlier ones are on freedom fighter Sudhakara Chaturvedi, who is said to be 117 year old and has report edly witnessed the Jalian Wallah Bagh massacre, the walking god of music Pandit Puttaraja Gavai, the Kanna da poet from Kasargod Kay Rai, yara . Kinhanna acclaimed Gandhian H.S. Doreswamy and the interna tionally known. yoga expo nent B.K.S. Iyengar. From the master title to chapter titles the Antara series at tempts to read multiple con textual meanings to into the very term 'antara' in all its connotations such as gap, difference, courage, efficien .cy, opportunity and soul, as it manifests itself in a partic ular context. In the context of "Lipyantara", a film on Prof. G. Venaktasubbaiah, familiarly known as G.V. in Kannada cultural and litera ry-circles, the very term 'an tara' with its prefix gains a discursive dimension, which is rather beyond the film makers conception. According to G.V. the very I Word wizard P CAPTURING THE ABSTRACT The 98 -year-old lexicographer Prof G. V. with thejilmmaker Suchindra Prasad term 'antara' could be employed not only as an independent semantic unit in the respective context but also a conjunction for uniting and disuniting both time and space at a particular or different junctures simultane. ously. From that point of view Lipyantara would mean separate situation and beyond words or loss of words or a phoneme or morpheme. What did G.V. think of the documentary film? "I am . happy with the purpose and effort of the product and ea ger to learn the views ofthe public as the film attempts to speak of umpteen things in a limited space." The filmmaker Mr. Prasad concedes to the view of G.Y. . Capturing the details of life \nd achievements of centu r)ons and nonagenarians in a 30~minute documentary is next~o impossib.Ie. A film)Ilake could capture the es sence f the experiences of such personalities from his torical, social, political and cultural view points in de taiL The films under the An tara Saraniare only essential capsules that could be devel oped into volumes by the concerned authorities in due course. Capturing experi ences and achievements through visuals with limited infrastructure is itself a chal lenging task. Subjects such as music, yoga, commitment and action of freedom fight- .-"" " ers, social, political and cul tural outlook of poets could be balanced through narra tive technique and available visuals. But how to capture the world of words with all its abstract and concrete qualities and its undertones in a visual format? It is in deed a challenge. Lipyantara was a big challenge for his creativity. All films under the series are only an at tempt to understand the val ues of men and matter. "'I' rof. G.V. has compiled over 10 dictionaries including the eight-vol ume Kannada-Kannada dictionary. Suchendra Prasad, is based on what some ~believe to be the ,concealed truth Anekal Su~raya Shastri flying a plane he plot is ambitious enough. An unemployed and impossibly slothful young man Abhaya teams up with a perpetually truant college student Narahari to find ,out what he can about Anekal Subbaraya Shastri (1866 - 1941) -because he is intrigued by news reports that this mystic flew an aircraft sometime towards the end ofthe 19th century AD. They end up with no proof and poorer than before in more ways than one. The movie is apparently based on a few real people, some readily identifiable as was evident at a post-screening discussion on the film at Suchi tra auditorium last Sunday. Abhaya (AmanuUa) and Narahari (Santhosh) encounter a series of weird people - including scientists, savants and surviving relatives of the Subbaraya Shastri - to get to the bottom ofthe it: Did Shastri indeed fly a plane? . Director K. Suchendra Prasad's own take on it . is not clear in his movie, nor was.it in the post T screening talk, but the prom~ters of the movie believe it did and with a passion. Their pam phlet 'reads: "...Vimana Shastra, authored by Shri Bhaaradwaaja Muni, one of the transcend ent sages in the exceedingly ancient land of India, is, but a' mine of marvels... The erudite scholar that Shri Anekal Subbaraya Shastri was, not only scripted the very epic of technology and its ann'otation;but also sucpessfully flew an aircraft titled 'Marutshakti'. It's only despairing that such an iconic achievement didn't find its way to the pages of history (sic)." Published scientific opinion is in vehement disagreement. In their paper, "A Critical Study. of the Work Vymanika Shastra", scien'tists H.S. Mukunda, S.M. Deshpande, H.R. Nagendra, A. Prabhu and S.P..Govindaraju ofIndian Institute of Science, Bangalore (Scientific Opinion, 1974), come to the conclusion that "...the planes described above (in old m;mu~cripts) are the StudyOfTheWorkVaimanik,a Shastra.pdf). ' Suchendra Prasad resorts to a repetitive juxtaposition of scenes alternating between bizarre encounters in the seekers' never-pro gressing quest, bits from the past and hard-on the-eye privations of poverty and unemploy ment on the one side and the tedium of linfnspired college education on the .other: "Prapaata~', produced by Maruthi S. Jadiyavllr and presented by the Voicing SilJnce, is filled with well-known actors - H.G. Dattatreya, Shivaram, Srinivasa, MP Venkata Rao, KSL Swamy and Sethunim - who represent charac ters we don't know and never understand: Eventually, Suchendra Prasad's "Prapaata" fails to make a point, either in favour or against a historical ch,aracter, reporting a search as he found himself found it - futile and bewildering. PRAKASH BELAWADI ~ AMBITIOUS PLOT Anekal Subbaraya Shastri \ '\ _______________________________ best poor concoctions, rather th;m expressions of something real. None of the planes has properties or capabilities of being flown; the geometries are unimaginably horrendous from the point of view of flying; and the principles of propulsion make them resist rather than assist flying." The movie does have at least one scientist (Srinivas Prabhu) who describes the stories of the flight as "cock'and bull stories." But the real scientists of ,IISc. go further: "What we feel unfortunate in history is that some people tend to eulogise and glorify whatever they.can find about our past, even without valid evidence. In the absence of any evidence, efforts will be made to produce part of the evidence in favour of antiquity."
