FIP NEWSLETTER
DECEMBER 2011
Federation of International Polo
President’s Message
Dear FIP members and friends,
As President of the Federation of International Polo (FIP),
and on behalf of all its members, it is a privilege to congratulate the players and delegations who participated in the 9th
World Polo Championship, held in San Luis Argentina.
The Council of Administration
has approved the following
changes on the handicap Level of the European Championships:
Polo was very competitive, but basically what we must highlight, was the spirit of friendship and camaraderie amongst
the players and delegations that accompanied them, during
and after the games, that being exactly the spirit FIP must
preserve and develop in order to continue growing the big
international family of polo.
Eduardo Huergo, FIP President
I would like to especially thank all our members for their
valued support during 2011.
European Trophy of Nations:
2 – 5 (minimum 0 per player)
Hope you and your family have wonderful holidays and a
happy new year.
European Championship:
6 – 8 (minimum 1 per player)
We also wish you a 2012 filled with laughter, love, joy and

This morning I received the notice of WADA
that also the last IOC Recognized International
Federation was deemed to be WADA Code
compliant, literally minutes before the start of
the meeting of the WADA Foundation Board.
I would like to congratulate all of you in reaching WADA compliance status. I realize the journey has not been easy, as only six months ago,
less than half of our members were WADA
compliant. I have worked personally closely
with WADA and with many of our International
Federations to ensure that all of you would be
compliant. Given that all our members have
reached this status now, it fills me with great
satisfaction that my time was well-spent.
Obviously, in the mean time, we have been
working with WADA to develop towards a more
sustainable, economic, model for our member
federations to enable all of you to remain com-
pliant over the years to come. I am hopeful
that the WADA Foundation Board will decide
on a change of regime how to deal with the
compliance process. I will continue to work
with WADA on your behalf to ensure that
next steps will be taken.
Kind regards, and again congratulations,
Jan Fransoo
President, ARISF

FIP SNOW POLO WORLD CUP INVITATIONAL
Tianjin Sports Bureau to herald this historic moment. Flying in especially for the
team draw were representatives from
the twelve participating teams.
Against the spectacular backdrop of this
winter wonderland, the 2012 FIP Snow
Polo World Cup will offer private boxes
from which the thrilling polo matches
can be viewed.

FIP SNOW POLO WORLD CUP INVITATIONAL
(Tianjin, China, 2 November, 2011) – At a
Press Conference held at Tianjin Goldin
Metropolitan Polo Club (―Metropolitan Polo
Club‖), it was formally announced that the
inaugural FIP Snow Polo World Cup invitational tournament will take place from 4 to
12 February 2012 at the Metropolitan Polo
Club, China’s most extensive polo facility.
During the Press Conference the 2012
Snow Polo World Cup team draw also took
place.
This promises to be the largest Snow Polo
tournament in the world. Twelve teams from
eleven nations and one Special Administrative Region, fielded from each polo association, have been invited to take part namely
Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, England,
France, Hong Kong SAR, India, Italy, New
Zealand, South Africa and the USA. All are
members of Federation of International
Polo (FIP).
The FIP Snow Polo World Cup is also the
first ever Snow Polo event to be hosted by
the FIP. Established in 1982 in Buenos
Aires, Argentina, FIP aims to promote and
enhance the sport of polo globally and unite
national polo associations across the world.
Families and children can enjoy a wealth
of dining experiences with musical entertainment in the winter playground. At
the venue there will also be a winter
shopping village and plenty of winter
games for all ages, guaranteeing an
unforgettable experience for spectators
of all ages.
Mr Harvey Lee, Vice Chairman of Goldin
Group (parent company of Metropolitan
Polo Club) said: ―We are delighted to
have the 2012 FIP Snow Polo World Cup
here in Tianjin. This tournament will
bring polo to a much wider audience.
We would like to thank the Tianjin Municipal Government, FIP, Tianjin Sports
Bureau, Tianjin Polo Association as well
as all the international representatives
and guests. I am very confident that the
FIP Snow Polo World Cup will become an
annual event here in Tianjin and I hope
to see many more events of this kind at
Metropolitan Polo Club which will bring
more attention to Tianjin, further raising
its international profile.‖
Snow Polo first emerged in Europe as a
winter alternative to grass polo and the
sport spread to the USA.
The major difference with grass polo is
that instead of a white ball made of
ballistic plastic the Snow Polo ball is a
large bright orange ball which is easier
to spot on the snow.

more goals from the field and Cambiaso

field) while Facundo Pieres missed scoring

shot blocked.

LA DOLFINA DOMINATES IN ARGENTINE
OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP WIN
Argentine Open Finals
December 9, 2011
The old sports adage says that "offenses
win games and defenses win championships", and La Dolfina proved it to be correct Friday afternoon as they recaptured
the Argentine Open Championship title in
a one-sided 16-10 victory over Ellerstina
in Palermo, Argentina in front of over
15,000 cheering fans.
La Dolfina dominated the throw-ins and
controlled the ball early on, limiting
Ellerstina to just a pair of penalty goals in
the first three chukkers. La Dolfina smothered the Ellerstina team with a disciplined
defense that limited their shots on goal
and had them struggling for a goal from
the field throughout the first half. Penalties were also the bane of the young
Ellerstina team as they gave up seven
goals from fouls. Three missed penalty
scoring opportunities from Cambiaso (two
blocked, one missed) kept Ellerstina in the
game, but it was clear early that Ellerstina
would have trouble scoring.
Cambiaso scored on a penalty shot for the
first goal of the game and La Dolfina got a
second goal from Juan Martin Nero. Facundo Pieres converted a pair of penalty
shots for Ellerstina for a 2-2 first chukker.
A pair of Ellerstina penalties in the second
period combined with shutout defense
had La Dolfina on top of a 4-2 score as
both teams had trouble getting away clear
shots at the opponent’s goal.
La Dolfina took advantage of disciplined
teamwork and some missed opportunities
from Ellerstina to run the score to 7-2 at
pair of penalties that allowed Facundo to
add a pair of goals to the Ellerstina total.
Cambiaso responded with a 30-yard penalty
conversion and found a streaking Stirling
down field with a pinpoint pass for another
goal. The first half ended with La Dolfina
riding off the field with a comfortable five
goal, 9-4 advantage over a struggling Ellerstina foursome.
A determined Ellerstina team took the field
in the fifth chukker as Facundo Pieres broke
through the La Dolfina defense in the opening minute of play to score his first goal from
Four consecutive La Dolfina goals (two
from Pablo MacDonough and single
goals from Cambiaso and Stirling) all
but ended it for Ellerstina. The boys in
black rebounded from seven goal deficits late in two earlier finals with La
Dolfina, but that would not be the case
today.
Not conceding a thing, Ellerstina
charged onto the field in the final chukker as if it were all even, but the La
Dolfina defense wouldn’t crack. A penalty goal from Facundo Pieres and a
goal from the field from Nico Pieres
would close out the scoring, giving the
2011 Argentine Championship trophy
to La Dolfina in a 16-10 triumph.
Cambiaso led all scoring with nine
goals (seven from the penalty line) and
was named MVP for his efforts. Nero
scored three times and MacDonough
and Stirling scored two goals apiece.
Facundo Pieres recorded eight goals
(six on penalty shots) and was honored
as the leading scorer in Open play. Nico
Pieres and Gonzalito Pieres added
single goals in a losing effort.

the field. He added a penalty goal less
than a minute later, but that would be
the end the scoring in the chukker.
Ellerstina cut into the La Dolfina lead,
9-6, but were unable to take control of
the play.
Gonzalito Pieres scored his first goal of
the game in the sixth period on a pass
from Nachi Heguy, but La Dolfina responded with a pair of penalty goals
from Cambiaso.

Ellerstina continued to press, but at the
end of the period La Dolfina lead by

seventh with a penalty goal followed by
a goal from Facundo Pieres as he took
the ensuing throw-in and raced down
the field for a goal, 12-8.
