Join us Sunday, November 3, as we celebrate the feast day of St. Martin de Porres during 6:00 p.m. mass. This multi-cultural celebration will include guests from other parishes in the archdiocese, including Brother Moises, the Archdiocese of Indianapolis Director of Multicultural Ministry. Following the mass, St. Monica parish will host a pitch-in dinner. The parish will provide drinks and a few main dishes from Mexico, the Philippines, and Africa. Parishioners are asked to bring a covered dish or dessert. Dinner will be held in the Emmaus Center. St. Martin de Porres was the son of a Spanish noble and a poor black woman from Panama, who immigrated to Lima, where he was born in 1579. Because he was biracial, he was mistreated as a youth and not allowed to become a priest. At 15, he became a lay brother at the Dominican Friary in Lima and devoted his life to doing good works for others. Martin founded an orphanage, raised money to help people in need, and cared for the sick. He is honored by Catholics as a patron for multicultural ministry who helps bridge the gap between two races and cultures. He is also the patron saint of nurses and health care assistants. Bring a dish and join the celebration! Sunday, November 3 at 6:00 p.m. WELCOME NEIGHBORS: CRAINE HOUSE NOW OPEN! The John P. Craine House officially moved and began operations at 6130 N. Michigan Road on Monday, September 16. Moving vans arrived at approximately 10:00 a.m. bringing furnishings, kitchenware, toys, and hope for the 19 women and their children who will be living at the facility. Craine House is in its 35th year as a unique, court-ordered alternative sentencing program dedicated to serving non-violent female offenders with pre-school children. In lieu of jail or prison, the program allows women from Marion and surrounding counties to serve their sentences with their children. Provide a secure and structured environment in which women serve their sentences for non-violent felonies. Provide a unique and positive environment in which preschool children live with their mothers, thus increasing the strength of the mother-child bond while mothers develop enhanced parenting skills and children develop learning and social skills. Offer educational opportunities, such as on-site GED classes, and encourage job readiness skills. If you are interested in volunteering at Craine House, a volunteer application packet is available on their website at www.CraineHouse.org. Please keep the women of Craine House and their children in your prayers. 2 Thank You, St. Monica! Greeting to our Church community, In regards to the beautiful services concerning Carrie G. Kemp. From the moment I booked the flight, my sense of peace about flying, leaving my family behind, and going to a foreign country was uncharacteristic. Due to this sense of peace, I truly believed this trip was a gift of the Holy Spirit. This trip was my first, but St. Monica’s 10th visit to our Sister Parish, St. James. The friendships that have been formed over the last 10 years were evident from the moment we stepped off the plane, but the friendship was not exclusive with a few. My St. Monica family wanted me to know their St. James family as they did—like bringing home your soon-to-be spouse to meet the family. That’s how it felt. And at the end of the week, I loved this family like the others who have traveled before me. But beyond this, I observed other things. One of the strongest for me was that St. Monica parishioners were catalysts for the care the St. James parishioners gave to each other. Yes, we traveled there with over 1,250 lbs. of medicine, but it was the St. James parishioners who picked us up and brought us and our medicine to Lepaterique. It was the St. James parishioners who came with horses, a motorcycle and trucks, and walked with us up and down a mountain so that we all could be of service to those who could not easily make it into town. It was two gentlemen from Lepaterique who carefully followed me down the mountain like guardian angels. It was the young adults of St. James who passed out toothbrushes and taught those in the mountains how to use them. St. Monica parishioners also participated, because it was those from St. Monica who donated the medicines. It’s the solidarity of the prayers we say for each other each month and the collection we take up for our brothers and sisters. It’s the parishioners who travel to St. James and the families that let them go. It is the leaders of the sister parish teams who continue this relationship in such a way that the grace of God is able and allowed to flow through each one of us so that we all share the gifts we are able to share. God is central to this relationship and through it, the face of Jesus is shown to us. Thank you for letting me be a part of this beautiful relationship.
