WATCHING FOR THE MESSIAH
Today’s Gospel story of John and his disciples seeing and
following Jesus sounds so simple and casual, it’s easy to
miss the significant acts of faith that are made.
John points to Jesus:
“Look,” he says, “there is
the Lamb of God.” John’s
faith in Jesus is evident, so
evident that John’s disciples
immediately leave his side
to follow this Jesus.
The two disciples make
their own act of faith. They
follow Jesus, spend time
with him, and are quick to
spread the good news of their discovery: “We have found
the Messiah.”
It is easy to forget that the expectations of generations,
the hopes of many ages of faithful people were being fulfilled in these simple acts of faith. The Lamb of God, the
Messiah, foretold by the prophets, had finally come.
Nearly everyone among the Jewish people was watching
for the Messiah back then; who in our own society
watches for signs of the presence of the Messiah today?

El relato del Evangelio de hoy en el que Juan y sus discípulos
ven y siguen a Jesús, suena tan sencillo e informal, que fácilmente pasan desapercibidos los importantes actos de fe que
ocurren.
Juan señala a Jesús: “Miren”,
les dice, “este es el Cordero de
Dios”. La fe de Juan en Jesús es
evidente, tan evidente que los
discípulos de Juan inmediatamente se van de su lado y siguen a Jesús.
Los dos discípulos a su vez
hacen un acto de fe. Ellos siguen
a Jesús, pasan tiempo con él, y
no demoran en compartir la buena nueva de su descubrimiento: “Hemos encontrado al Mesías”.
Es fácil olvidar que las expectativas de generaciones, las esperanzas de muchos siglos de fieles se estaban cumpliendo en
estos sencillos actos de fe. El Cordero de Dios, el Mesías, anunciado por los profetas, finalmente había llegado. Prácticamente
todo el mundo en el pueblo judío estaba a la búsqueda del
Mesías en esa época; ¿quién de nuestra sociedad busca señales
de la presencia del Mesías hoy día?

Last fall we worked with our envelope company
to develop a donation envelope which would
facilitate donations not only by cash or check,
but also by credit/debit card and for authorizing
Electronic Fund Transfers. These new envelopes are now in the
pew, and will be sent out in the mailed packets beginning with
the March-April packet. We hope that this will provide you with
the method you most prefer for supporting your parish.

One of the outreach actions of the Kino Border Initiative and the No More Deaths organization is to provide migrants with white
socks. This helps to contain any infection
from the blisters on their feet. During the
month of January, which begins with an observation of
National Migration Week, we will have a box in the vestibule for donations if you would be willing to help.

The Boy Scouts next big event is their annual Spaghetti Dinner. It will be held Saturday, 24 January
from 5:00 to 7:30 PM in Nicholson Hall. Tickets are
just $6 a person or $20 for 4. Dinner includes homemade sauce, salad, and drink. There will also be a
“Dessert Auction.”

rank within Boy Scouts. Dylan has been with Troop 115 for many
years and has also participated in many St. Cyril Church and
community functions. We wish to take this moment to congratulate Dylan on being of the less than 5% of scouts to reach this
achievement.

on Sunday, 25 January. Doors will be open
from 11 AM to 1 PM. Current families are invited to
visit the classrooms, and prospective families are
encouraged to come check out the school. Tours
will be lead by Student Council members, and all teachers will

In support of this educational ministry of our parish, we will
have a special collection for the school at all our Masses next

Our drawing will take place at an “All Parish

field. Rules for the Reverse Raffle will remain
the same. Tickets are $100 each, the top
prize will be $5,000 and only 200 tickets will be sold. You
may form groups to purchase tickets or buy them individually. This is one of our major fundraisers of the year and we
strongly encourage everyone to participate and join us at the
picnic. Everyone is welcome. Tickets are now on sale. For

Religious Education Program
Registration is open for the next semester through
the month of January 2015. Registration forms can be
picked up from the table in the vestibule of the church
or at the Parish Office during regular business hours.
If your child is not in a Catholic school, he/she should
be in a Religious Education Program. St. Cyril of Alexandria
Parish offers religious education on Sunday 10 AM – 12:45
PM (includes the 10 AM Mass, immediately followed by
class). For more information please contact Becki at 795
1633 ext 104.

attending immediate Sacramental preparation. Students receiving Confirmation are of High School age. Contact Becki Jenkins

Confirmation I – Next session is 21 January. The group
meets every other Wednesday at 6:30 PM. Students attending
these sessions will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation
in the Fall of 2015.

A Holy Land Tour with a Side of Carmel

Our Carmelite Order has its origins on Mt. Carmel in the Holy
Land. Fr. Edgar E. López, O.Carm. will be the
Chaplain on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land this 14–
25 October 2015. In addition to visiting the places
of Lord Jesus recorded in our Scriptures, the pilgrimage will include a stopover in England at
Aylesford Priory (the Carmelites first foundation in
Europe after leaving Mt. Carmel) and an opportunity to visit the excavations of the first priory of the Carmelites on
Mt. Carmel during a two night stay at the Carmelite’s Stella Maris
Guest House on Mt. Carmel. If you would like more information,
please come and join us at our parish on 8 February at 11:30 AM
for a presentation on this pilgrimage.

The session for all Tucson parishioners and those from Santa Cruz County will be held at
Most Holy Trinity Parish in Tucson on Sunday, 25 January.
There will be an English session from 2:00–4:00 PM as well as
one in Spanish from 6:30–8:30 PM.
To get to Most Holy Trinity Parish (1300 N. Greasewood Rd.)
you would take Speedway Blvd. west to Greasewood and turn
right. The parish is on the East side of Greasewood about two

In preparation for this day of prayer, a Novena of Prayer for
Vocations has been set for the nine days before: 23–31 January. Parishes throughout the Diocese are
asked to join in prayer for the intention of an
increase in Vocations to Priesthood and Religious Life in their prayers during these nine
days. Local prayer groups and Parish rosary
groups are also asked to include Priests and
Religious in their prayers.
In addition, all are invited to join the Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration for a
Rosary Novena and evening prayer services beginning Friday,
23 January, and concluding Saturday, 31 January, at the
Benedictine Sisters’ monastery (800 N. Country Club Rd.).

With our Catholic Church’s very strong pro-life stance and the availability of various medical procedures that promote procreation, some Catholics presume that use of these procedures are acceptable
practices while many others are confused as to whether or not they are acceptable or prohibited.
As our Church speaks out against abortion this week on the anniversary of the Roe vs Wade decision,
it is an opportune time to consider our Church’s teaching on these related life issues.
2374 Couples who discover that they are sterile suffer greatly. "What will you give me," asks Abraham
of God, "for I continue childless?" And Rachel cries to her husband Jacob, "Give me children, or I shall
die!”
2375 Research aimed at reducing human sterility is to be encouraged, on condition that it is placed "at
the service of the human person, of his inalienable rights, and his true and integral good according to
the design and will of God."
2376 Techniques that entail the dissociation of husband and wife, by the intrusion of a person other than the couple
(donation of sperm or ovum, surrogate uterus), are gravely immoral. These techniques (heterologous artificial insemination and fertilization) infringe the child's right to be born of a father and mother known to him and bound to each
other by marriage. They betray the spouses' "right to become a father and a mother only through each other."
2377 Techniques involving only the married couple (homologous artificial insemination and fertilization) are perhaps
less reprehensible, yet remain morally unacceptable. They dissociate the sexual act from the procreative act. The act
which brings the child into existence is no longer an act by which two persons give themselves to one another, but
one that "entrusts the life and identity of the embryo into the power of doctors and biologists and establishes the
domination of technology over the origin and destiny of the human person. Such a relationship of domination is in
itself contrary to the dignity and equality that must be common to parents and children." "Under the moral aspect
procreation is deprived of its proper perfection when it is not willed as the fruit of the conjugal act, that is to say, of
the specific act of the spouses' union . . . . Only respect for the link between the meanings of the conjugal act and respect for the unity of the human being make possible procreation in conformity with the dignity of the person."
2378 A child is not something owed to one, but is a gift. The "supreme gift of marriage" is a human person. A child may
not be considered a piece of property, an idea to which an alleged "right to a child" would lead. In this area, only the
child possesses genuine rights: the right "to be the fruit of the specific act of the conjugal love of his parents," and
"the right to be respected as a person from the moment of his conception."
The answer to the question then is:
no, the Church does not support using these forms of medical technology
for the procreation of children.

Ante la fuerte postura de nuestra Iglesia Católica en favor de la vida y ante la disponibilidad de diversos procedimientos médicos que favorecen la procreación; algunos católicos suponen que el uso de dichos procedimientos
son prácticas aceptables, mientras que muchos otros se encuentran ante la duda de si el uso de estos procedimientos -son o no- prácticas aceptables o prohibidas.
A medida de que nuestra Iglesia habla en contra del aborto y durante esta semana, en donde se celebra el aniversario de la decisión Roe vs Wade, resulta oportuno reflexionar acerca de las enseñanzas de la Iglesia Católica
respecto a estos temas relacionados con la vida.
2374 Grande es el sufrimiento de los esposos que se descubren estériles. Abraham pregunta a Dios:
“¿Qué me vas a dar, si me voy sin hijos...?” (Gn 15, 2). Y Raquel dice a su marido Jacob: “Dame hijos, o si
no me muero” (Gn 30, 1).
2375 Las investigaciones que intentan reducir la esterilidad humana deben alentarse, a condición de
que se pongan “al servicio de la persona humana, de sus derechos inalienables, de su bien verdadero e
integral, según el plan y la voluntad de Dios” (Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fe, Instr. Donum vitae, intr. 2).
2376 Las técnicas que provocan una disociación de la paternidad por intervención de una persona extraña a los
cónyuges (donación del esperma o del óvulo, préstamo de útero) son gravemente deshonestas. Estas técnicas
(inseminación y fecundación artificiales heterólogas) lesionan el derecho del niño a nacer de un padre y una madre
conocidos de él y ligados entre sí por el matrimonio. Quebrantan “su derecho a llegar a ser padre y madre exclusivamente el uno a través del otro” (Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fe, Instr. Donum vitae, 2, 4).
2377 Practicadas dentro de la pareja, estas técnicas (inseminación y fecundación artificiales homólogas) son quizá
menos perjudiciales, pero no dejan de ser moralmente reprobables. Disocian el acto sexual del acto procreador. El acto
fundador de la existencia del hijo ya no es un acto por el que dos personas se dan una a otra, sino que “confía la vida y
la identidad del embrión al poder de los médicos y de los biólogos, e instaura un dominio de la técnica sobre el origen y
sobre el destino de la persona humana. Una tal relación de dominio es en sí contraria a la dignidad e igualdad que debe
ser común a padres e hijos” (cf Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fe, Instr. Donum vitae, 82). “La procreación queda
privada de su perfección propia, desde el punto de vista moral, cuando no es querida como el fruto del acto conyugal,
es decir, del gesto específico de la unión de los esposos [...] solamente el respeto de la conexión existente entre los
significados del acto conyugal y el respeto de la unidad del ser humano, consiente una procreación conforme con la
dignidad de la persona” (Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fe, Instr. Donum vitae, 2, 4).
2378 El hijo no es un derecho sino un don. El “don [...] más excelente [...] del matrimonio” es una persona humana. El
hijo no puede ser considerado como un objeto de propiedad, a lo que conduciría el reconocimiento de un pretendido
“derecho al hijo”. A este respecto, sólo el hijo posee verdaderos derechos: el de “ser el fruto del acto específico del
amor conyugal de sus padres, y tiene también el derecho a ser respetado como persona desde el momento de su concepción” (Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fe, Instr. Donum vitae, 2, 8).
La respuesta a la pregunta es:
No, la Iglesia no admite el uso de estas formas de tecnología médica
para la procreación de niños.
Socks for Blistered Feet

National Migration Week through January
We are collecting white socks during January in support of an outreach effort of the Kino Border Initiative and No
More Deaths. Each of these organizations seeks to provide migrants with socks that will help to contain any infection from the blisters on their feet. Donations of socks can be placed in the box in the church vestibule.
The Kino Border Initiative’s (KBI) mission, sponsored by the
Jesuits, is to promote US/Mexico border and immigration
policies that affirm the dignity of the human person and a
spirit of bi-national solidarity through direct humanitarian
assistance and accompaniment with migrants; social and
pastoral education with communities on both sides of the
border; participation in collaborative networks that engage
in research and advocacy to transform local, regional, and
national immigration policies.
KBI also seeks to provide humanitarian aid to the thousands of migrant men, women an children who are deported
to Nogales, Sonora, Mexico through 3 works:
Aid Center for Deported Migrants
(CAMDEP – Initials in Spanish)
The CAMDEP provides two
meals a day to deported migrants. The CAMDEP also distributes clothing and personal care
items, and refers people to Mexican government services.
Nazareth House
Nazareth House is a shelter for migrant women and children, to respond to their vulnerability in the streets of Nogales, Sonora. It is a safe space where women and children
can bathe, eat, sleep, call their families and reflect on their
experience. They receive opportunities for prayer and pastoral support as well.
First Aid Station
Many deported migrants arrive in Nogales, Sonora with severely blistered feet, flu symptoms and dehydration. The
first aid station is open five mornings per week and is run
through Grupo Beta’s office in Nogales, Sonora (Grupo Beta
is a Mexican government agency that rescues migrants in
the Mexican desert).
No More Deaths is an organization whose mission is to
end death and suffering on the U.S./Mexico border
through civil initiative: the conviction that people of conscience must work openly and in community to uphold
fundamental human rights. Our work embraces the FaithBased Principles for Immigration Reform and focuses on
the following themes:
 Direct aid which provides humanitarian assistance
 Witnessing and responding
 Consciousness raising
 Global movement building
 Encouraging humane immigration policy
Desert aid
Since 2004, No More Deaths has maintained a humanitarian
presence in the 262-square-mile corridor where over half of
known migrant deaths in recent years have occurred.
Post-deportation aid
Since 2006, No More Deaths has provided humanitarian aid
to individuals deported from the US to cities along the Arizona–Sonora border. No More Deaths does not own or run a
migrant aid station in Mexico, but instead works with multiple humanitarian, faith-based, and governmental organizations in northern Sonora that run such facilities, complementing local resources with our own.
Property recovery
This project, another outgrowth of the Nogales project,
dates to 2008—the year Operation Streamline was rolled
out in Tucson Sector. The project addresses an important
humanitarian impact of the Department of Homeland Security’s mass-prosecution and mass-deportation initiatives:
mass dispossession. We are helping incarcerated individuals
recover their personal belongings from the agency that arrested them, normally Border Patrol/Customs and Border
Protection.
