However, practicing mercy in our lives actually does take practice! Here are some suggestions for practicing mercy this week: 1) Make a point to smile, greet or make conversation with someone who is not in your everyday circle. 2) Respond to provocation with the respect you wish a person would show you. 3) When conversations devolve into “the dark joy” of gossip, help change the subject. We bless palms and we process into church after hearing the same chorus sung by angels over the manger: "Peace on earth and glory in the highest." On Holy Thursday, we process to the Meal of the Lord and then later to the place of repose to ponder and give thanks. On Good Friday, we process to the Cross to behold, to genuflect, to embrace. In the holy night of Easter, we follow in procession the Light, our dead and risen Christ. We process to the font and wash clean new disciples who will take up with us the great mercy works: feeding, sheltering, clothing, visiting, burying, and giving, giving, giving. Like our ancestors of Exodus, we process to our promised home behaving as if we are there. Pray: Holy Week, the final week of Lent, provides many beautiful opportunities for prayer from Holy Thursday through Easter Sunday. Easter is made so much more meaningful and joyful when experienced as the culmination of Holy Thursday and Good Friday. This week’s prayer challenge is to attend the services on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter (the Vigil if possible), and pray with Jesus and the Body of Christ from the Last Supper, to the Cross, to the Resurrection. Beginning of the Paschal Triduum Evening Mass of the Lord's Supper- 24 March 2016 Wash. Give. Eat. There are three key verbs for the Evening Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday. Some feet are washed this night as a reminder to behave like Jesus. No task, no service, no gesture is beneath those who bear the name Christian. Then follows a unique Missal rubric: "...there may be a procession of the faithful in which gifts for the poor may be presented with the bread and wine." As we end Lent with gathering the Rice Bowls "for Lent for Life", we begin Easter by still giving to those who are poor. No giving is beneath those who follow Jesus. And after washing and giving, we rush headlong to eat and drink the Blood and Body of Christ. We process to give. We process to eat and drink. So that we can process to do mercy work. No task, no service, no gesture is beneath those who bear the name Christian. Fast: Attending these three services will require a significant amount of time, including time that is typically used for recreation – Friday and Saturday nights. This week’s fasting challenge is to fast from your weekend evening recreation so that you can attend the services at St. Pius (7:00 pm Thursday, 7:00 pm Friday, 7:30 pm Saturday, 7:30, 9:30, and 11:30 am on Sunday) Give: Remember your Easter donation to St. Pius X. Also, bring your Rice Bowl with your contribution for Catholic Relief Services to church this week. Light Our Way Apologetics continued…… Why do Catholics confess their sins to a priest, rather than going directly to God? Well, the quick answer is because that's the way God wants us to do it. In James 5:16, God, through Sacred Scripture, commands us to "confess our sins to one another." Notice, Scripture does not say confess your sins straight to God and only to God...it says confess your sins to one another. In Matthew, chapter 9, verse 6, Jesus tells us that He was given authority on earth to forgive sins. And then Scripture proceeds to tell us, in verse 8, that this authority was given to "men"...plural. In John 20, verses 21-23, what is the 1st thing Jesus says to the gathered disciples on the night of His resurrection? "Jesus said to them, 'Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.'" How did the Father send Jesus? Well, we just saw in Mt 9 that the Father sent Jesus with the authority on earth to forgive sins. Now, Jesus sends out His disciples as the Father has sent Him...so, what authority must Jesus be sending His disciples out with? The authority on earth to forgive sins. And, just in case they didn't get it, verses 22-23 say this, "And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, 'Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.'" Why would Jesus give the Apostles the power to forgive or to retain sins if He wasn't expecting folks to confess their sins to them? And how could they forgive or retain sins if no one was confessing their sins to them? The Bible tells us to confess our sins to one another. It also tells us that God gave men the authority on Earth to forgive sins. Jesus sends out His disciples with the authority on earth to forgive sins. When Catholics confess our sins to a priest, we are simply following the plan laid down by Jesus Christ. He forgives sins through the priest...it is God's power, but He exercises that power through the ministry of the priest. http://www.biblechristiansociety.com/apologetics/ two_minute#11 March 20, 2016 PAGE 5 PARISH NEWS Holy Week and Easter Schedule MARCH 24 – HOLY THURSDAY – 7:00 p.m. Celebration of the Lord’s Supper Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament 9:00 p.m. – Midnight MARCH 25 – GOOD FRIDAY – 7:00 p.m. Celebration of the Lord’s Passion Stations of the Cross – 3:00 p.m. MARCH 26 – HOLY SATURDAY – 7:30 p.m. Celebration of Easter Vigil Blessing of the Easter Food Baskets – 11:00 a.m. MARCH 27 – EASTER SUNDAY Eucharist – 7:30, 9:30 & 11:30 a.m. Misa de Pascua – 1:00 p.m. Faith Formation Grade 8 Confirmation Retreat Parent Confirmation Mini-Retreat www.stpiuslombard.org PAGE 6 Black & Gold Gala 2016 St. Pius X School presents: MAMA ME-A Live Auction Item #1 - Full Orthodontic Case donated by Board certified orthodontist, Dr. Andy Clark of Lombard. REFLEXION 1. The Franciscans of the Custody of the Holy Land have the unique responsibility of caring for the Holy Places as well as caring for the Christians living in the Holy Land. The Good Friday Collection is applied to these programs below. Faith, Memory & Culture – The Holy Places || Holy Land Franciscans staff and maintain the Holy places and shrines. This enables those who live in the Holy Land and those who visit to deepen their faith and their spiritual and cultural connection to Salvation history. Social Support to Christians in the Holy Land || In order to assist Christians to remain in the Holy Land, including the poor and young couples, the Custody builds thousands of residential units. Additionally, they build senior care facilities. Medical assistance is provided for the needy. Educational & Scientific Activities || The Franciscans operate and support schools open to all, regardless of religion or nationality. They provide scholarships for local Marriage Enrichment Ministry We are excited to announce the existence of a Marriage Enrichment Ministry for our Eastern DuPage Deanery. The mission of this new ministry is to support and encourage all married couples to celebrate and strengthen their relationships. Our goal is to provide events, programs and opportunities for couples to experience practical ways to deepen their marriage emotionally and spiritually. To quote Pope Francis “True joy… does not come from material objects…True joy comes from a profound harmony between persons …which makes us experience the beauty of togetherness, of mutual support along life’s journey.” This ministry is not intended to replicate “Pre-Cana” classes or to replace Marriage Encounter Weekends. It is intended for couples in our neighboring Deanery Parishes to provide local, on-going opportunities to strengthen and grow in their union and celebrate the joy of their married life together. Because healthy marriages and families are the cornerstone of society and our faith communities, we believe our parishes’ married couples need to support each other with programs that are inspirational, practical, and celebratory. Therefore, we are inviting all couples to an informal Gathering celebrating the “Joy of Marriage” on Friday, April 8 at 7:00 – 8:30 pm at St. Joseph’s Parish, 330 E. Fullerton Avenue, Addison, IL 60181. RSVP. You can email us at [email protected] and include your name, phone number, email address, and Parish. students and those studying to become Franciscan priests or brothers. Finally, Franciscan archaeologists pursue ongoing research at the Holy Places discovering historical artifacts. Pastoral Activities || The Franciscans provide pastoral care in 29 parishes in the Holy Land offering Worship, Christian Formation, youth and family programs. Liturgical, Ecumenical and Communications Programs || The Franciscan Media Center tells the story of the Holy Land through multimedia distributed throughout the world in more than seven languages. The friars organize Liturgical Celebrations for the local Christians and Pilgrims and share with other Christian communities in the Holy Land in ongoing Ecumenical cooperation. Please be generous this Good Friday, March 25. Christians, along with all of the clergy and religious who serve in the Holy Land, will deeply appreciate our prayers and financial help.
