Zoo Supporters,
Fiscal year 2012 was a very exciting year for Zoo New England marked with many achievements and new opportunities. From
exciting births including a kangaroo joey, white-cheeked gibbon, and a Grevy’s zebra, to engaging interactive experiences such
Aussie Aviary, Butterfly Landing and the always memorable Masters of Flight: Birds of Prey show, there was so much to share.
Franklin Park Zoo celebrated a century of fun and adventure and people of all ages enjoyed the many celebrations in honor of
the Zoo’s 100th birthday. As part of the centennial celebration, we presented the thrilling seasonal exhibit Zoorassic Park
where visitors were immersed in a prehistoric journey through time filled with moving, roaring, life-like animatronic dinosaurs,
including the imposing Tyrannosaurus rex.
As vibrant, essential contributors to our region’s cultural landscape, Franklin Park Zoo and Stone Zoo provide affordable,
fun activities for families while simultaneously educating and inspiring wildlife conservationists and supporters. In FY12,
more than 660,000 children, teens, adults, tourists, teachers and students visited the Zoos making FY12 a record-setting year.
In fact, attendance increased 25 percent over FY11, strengthening our reputation as being a must-see destination.
Within our gates, classroom learning is brought to life and family memories are created. In FY12, we welcomed more than
47,000 students who visited our Zoos through school field trips. Their laughter and squeals of excitement were contagious
as they streamed through our gates for a day of fun and learning. As the fiscal year drew to a close, we were anxiously preparing
for the opening of our new, magnificent playground at Franklin Park Zoo which was made possible by the Play 2 Dream
Foundation.
Delivering on our mission and inspiring tomorrow’s conservation leaders requires great vision as well as passion, creativity
and commitment. We are fortunate to have a skilled and dedicated group of professional staff and a strong core of devoted
Board members and volunteers working together to enhance our Zoos. The members of our greatly expanded Board of
Directors provide strategic direction, insights, technical expertise, financial resources and untold hours of hard work in a
commitment to raising our Zoos to the pinnacle of quality.
We look ahead with a sense of excitement and anticipation. Our Zoos are on the move and the years to come will be marked
by transformation and growth that will help us truly realize the vision for these beloved institutions. We are privileged to have
the loyal and generous Zoo members, donors and volunteers recognized in this Annual Report who are fueling this initiative.
With your continued support, and that of a growing number of partners, we are making it happen!
Sincerely,
John Linehan
President & CEO
A kangaroo joey began to poke its head out of its mother’s pouch in February 2012
at Franklin Park Zoo. The arrival marked the first kangaroo birth at the Zoo since 2005.
Zoos That Inspire
Our Zoos play a unique role in connecting people to the
natural world while providing engaging, memorable experiences.
At Franklin Park Zoo, visitors watched in pure enchantment
along the Outback Trail as Skippy the kangaroo hopped by with
her baby in her pouch. At Stone Zoo, guests were thoroughly
delighted to watch Paddy, a white-cheeked gibbon, learn to
swing and play alongside his parents.
Whether it’s a family outing, a corporate picnic or a school
field trip, our Zoos provide a welcoming environment where all
guests can enjoy themselves and learn about the incredible animals that we share our planet with. In FY12, we had recordbreaking attendance with more than 660,000 visitors who
enjoyed everything that our Zoos have to offer. We are working
hard to realize our vision for the future of these Zoos and are
committed to building world-class institutions for you and your
family to enjoy for generations to come.
Significant Animal Achievements
Each animal is an ambassador for its species and has an
important story to tell in regard to the importance of wildlife
protection and habitat preservation. Some species rely on zoos in
part for their comeback from the brink of extinction. Management
of animals within and cooperatively between institutions
accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) is
vital for ensuring healthy, genetically diverse populations.
Zoo New England has been an active participant in and
contributor to a number of important Species Survival Plans
(SSPs) for many years. SSPs, cooperative, inter-zoo programs coordinated nationally through AZA, are designed to maintain genetically diverse and demographically stable captive populations
of species.
In FY12, the Zoos experienced quite a baby boom and
visitors delighted in seeing all of the new faces.
In early July, red panda twins were born at Franklin Park
Zoo, marking the first birth of this endangered species at the
Zoo. Born helpless and with closed eyes, the twins, a male and
a female, stayed in the nest box with their mother for three
months after birth. They caused quite a sensation when they
made their exhibit debut in October.
In addition to the red panda twins, other births and
hatchings included an endangered Grevy’s zebra, a red kangaroo, and rare Siberian crane chicks.
The kangaroo joey first began to poke its head out of its
mother’s pouch in February. Kangaroo babies are born after
a very short 30 to 35 day gestation and are about the size of
a jelly bean. Joeys begin to emerge from the pouch for short
periods at around 190 days. The arrival marked the first kangaroo birth at the Zoo since 2005.
A few months later, a rare Siberian crane chick hatched.
Franklin Park Zoo is one of three North American institutions
accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums to
house these critically endangered birds. It is estimated that
roughly 3,000 of these cranes, noted for their pure white
plumage and black flight feathers, remain in the wild. The
Zoo, the first in North America to successfully breed these
birds, has produced seven chicks since 1999.
This success is the result of a lot of hard work and technical expertise. The newest chick, hatched May 15, 2012, at
Franklin Park Zoo is a result of artificial insemination. Because
these birds hail from the high Arctic regions, each year on
February 14 the Zoo staff increases the amount of light in the
birds’ exhibit by one hour a week to simulate the light cycle
in their native environment. The light is increased until the
birds receive 21 to 22 hours of light a day. Once the light cycle
reaches this point, the birds typically begin breeding.
At Stone Zoo visitors also saw a number of new faces.
New births and hatches included a white-cheeked gibbon, a
prehensile-tailed porcupine and Caribbean flamingos.
Since the birth of the white-cheeked gibbon on Sept. 2,
2011, visitors have taken great pleasure in watching Paddy
grow from being a small, helpless baby clinging to his mother
to the thriving, energetic young gibbon who now swings
throughout the exhibit alongside his parents.
Zoo New England participates in the White-cheeked
Gibbon SSP, and this birth – a first for ZNE – is the result of
a recommended breeding between Iggy and Kien.

Immersive
Experiences
Visitors to the Zoos can enjoy memorable interactive experience including the
engaging free-flight Masters of Flight: Birds of Prey show at Stone Zoo and the
opportunity to meet the giraffes at Franklin Park Zoo’s GiraffeTerrace.
It is one thing to see wildlife, but it’s a completely different experience to
be able to interact with the incredible animals at our Zoos.
Visitors of all ages were thrilled with the opportunity to meet Beau at the
Giraffe Terrace, a seasonal experience that is available for a small fee. Standing
face-to-face with the 18-foot-tall giraffe while feeding him butternut squash, is
definitely not something that is soon forgotten.
Masters of Flight: Birds of Prey once again wowed visitors at Stone Zoo.
This free-flight show featured bird species from around the world in an engaging, memorable and educational experience. People watched in awe as the birds
– including a majestic bald eagle – flew in from overhead and demonstrated
natural behaviors such as unique survival techniques and food foraging, as well
as specialized physical adaptations.
At Franklin Park Zoo, the ever-engaging
Aussie Aviary and Butterfly Landing were once
again places where people could truly connect
with the wonders of wildlife. Whether feeding the
colorful budgies in Aussie Aviary or immersing
themselves in the calm, tranquil environment of
Butterfly Landing, people of all ages flocked to
these interactive and educational spaces.
Visitors were immersed in a prehistoric journey through time at the thrilling Zoorassic Park,
where a vast array of fascinating dinosaurs awaited
them at every turn. With more than 15 moving,
roaring, life-like animatronic dinosaurs, including
the imposing Tyrannosaurus rex, this unique seasonal experience at Franklin Park Zoo captivated
the imagination.
Through all of these experiences and so
many others, Franklin Park Zoo and Stone Zoo
are uniquely positioned to connect guests to the
vast wonders of nature by creating opportunities
to explore, discover, play, learn, imagine and
treasure. More than anything else, these experiences help foster a greater appreciation for the
natural world that guests will carry with them
long after they have walked through our gates.
Committed to Conservation
While our animal collection may be the primary motivation behind a Zoo visit, our mission – our passion – is to inspire
and educate the next generation of conservation stewards and
leaders. Our conservation programs are far-reaching and make
a lasting and meaningful impact locally, regionally and internationally. At our Zoos, people of all ages can discover the
incredible biodiversity of our planet and the critical role they
play in ensuring it remains a healthy, thriving environment
for generations to come.
Looking beyond the majestic lion whose roar echoes
throughout Franklin Park Zoo or the snow leopard that tracks
her prey from atop her rocky perch at Stone Zoo, you will
uncover a host of science and conservation advancements that
reverberate into the far corners of the world.
Since 2006, ZNE has been committed to amphibian
conservation efforts in Panama. ZNE is one of several institutions working to save amphibians from the brink of extinction
in the eastern region of Panama–an area rich with diverse
amphibian species. Dr. Eric Baitchman, ZNE Director of
Veterinary Services, is the lead veterinarian for the Panama
Amphibian Rescue and Conservation Project, comprised of a
consortium of partners dedicated to vital amphibian conservation efforts. To learn more about Dr. Baitchman’s work visit
www.zoonewengland.org/conservation.
Conservation doesn’t just happen abroad. The Zoos are
committed to a host of conservation initiatives right in our own
backyard. ZNE, in partnership with Ecologic Entomology,
LLC of Boston, has launched a multi-faceted pollinator awareness program. In April 2012, an apiary, featuring10 wooden
bee hives containing 100,000 honeybees, was installed on the
grounds of Franklin Park Zoo. Through the apiary project, we
plan to teach education program participants, our ZooTeens
and others about beekeeping, the role bees play in the ecosystem as pollinators, and the importance of preserving this important species. Further goals include increasing the number of
honeybee colonies in the Greater Boston area, and expanding
people’s understanding of the inter-reliance of humans with
other species of the world.
Also close to home, ZNE staff continues to participate in
the restoration of habitat for the endangered Karner blue
buttterfly. ZNE is part of the New England Zoo & Aquarium
Conservation Collaborative, comprised of a group of
accredited zoos, which is working to expand the numbers of
the Karner blue butterfly through the Karner Blue Butterfly
Habitat Restoration Project initiated by the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service and New Hampshire Fish and Game. The
project seeks to bolster the local population of this federally
endangered butterfly by restoring its pine barren habitat as well
as its main food source–wild lupine, in Concord, N.H.
Sharing the
Franklin Park Zoo and Stone Zoo provide the perfect natural
environment for active exploration, inquiry and hands-on discovery to inspire people of all ages to interact with the world in a
positive way. Zoo New England’s expansive science, technology,
engineering and mathematics (STEM) focused educational
programs, which incorporate Massachusetts and federal curriculum frameworks, supplement and build interest in formal science
education and enable our guests to better explore the intricate
connection between natural, thriving habitats and wildlife.
Whether discovering the life cycle of a butterfly in Butterfly
Landing or learning about endangered Mexican gray wolves, a
visit to the Zoo highlights the importance of wildlife protection
and conservation in a meaningful way that has a lasting impact.
Throughout the school year, the Zoos offer free admission to
all Massachusetts schoolchildren. By providing opportunities to
underserved schoolchildren who may not otherwise be able
to visit our Zoos, we are able to share the beauty and complexity
of wildlife and extend our reach by bringing fun and effective
educational programming to all members of our community.
In FY12, we welcomed more than 47,000 students who visited
the Zoos during school field trips.
Through a range of formal and informal programming, the
Education department shares the wonder of nature with so many
– from toddlers in the Playful Paws playgroups to school-aged
children, college students working on research, adult education
participants and a host of others.
Wonders of the Natural World
“The Franklin Park Zoo is one of Boston's institutional treasures. On the
occasion of our Founder's Day, celebrating 368 years of continuous existence,
everyone at The Roxbury Latin School ventured to the Zoo, in its 100th year,
for a day of education and interesting experiences. I am confident that our
students have gained much greater appreciation for their responsibility as
stewards of the Earth and all its creatures as a result of our shared adventure.
We are very grateful for the professionalism, enthusiasm, and inspiring mission
of the Zoo and all those associated with it.”
FY12 program highlights:
• Engaged 169,696 visitors through programs and
interpretation, a 17 percent increase over FY12
• Increased after-school programming by
80 percent over FY12
• Increased the total number of programs by
11 percent over FY12
• Began the fourth year of a successful summer camp
at Stone Zoo
• Presented an increasingly popular set of
homeschool programs at both Zoos
Class time is not only for children. Our educators also offer
classes aligned with the state’s educational frame-works to enhance
the knowledge, skills and expertise of Massachusetts and New
Hampshire school teachers. Teachers not only learn how to maximize the use of the Zoos to facilitate learning, but also participate in
activities that can be replicated in classrooms using either commonly
found materials or special kits designed by the Zoos’ educators.
Zoo New England’s staff also greatly contributes to environmental education beyond the Zoos’ gates. Jennifer Gresham,
ZNE Director of Education, is a member of the Steering
Committee for the Secretary’s Advisory Group on Energy and
Environmental Education (SAGEE) for the state’s Executive
Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs and the Department of
Elementary and Secondary Education.

Inspiring
Tomorrow’s Leaders
For more than a decade, Zoo New England’s nationally
recognized ZooTeen program has created opportunities and
nurtured the development of our future leaders. Since 1999, the
summer ZooTeen program at Franklin Park Zoo has provided
employment and professional development opportunities for
Boston youth. By enriching the program with a structured professional development component, the teens are prepared both
for employment at the Zoo, as well as in their future endeavors.
The teens not only work in a wide range of Zoo departments,
but also forge lasting personal and professional relationships,
build their resumes and hone interview skills.
The program attracts a diverse group of participants from the
neighborhoods surrounding Franklin Park Zoo. In FY12, the
academic portion of the program was increased to include
additional guest speakers on sustainability, conservation, land
preservation and invasive species.
Since the program’s inception more than 1,300 Boston
youth have been a part of the ZooTeen program. This also
includes the Jr. ZooTeen and Teen Ambassador programs which
provide mentoring opportunities and unique experiences for
highly-motivated young people
“By working at the Zoo, I have learned so much about environmental science
and have been given the opportunity to teach others what I know. Not only do I
get to learn a lot about the animals but I also am learning about their needs and
where they come from. The Zoo has inspired me to share the knowledge I have
with others.”
– Christina Scialoia, Teen Ambassador
Strengthening
Our Communities
As a vibrant component of the Boston cultural community
and beyond, Zoo New England is committed to community participation and access. In FY12, ZNE was again pleased to partner
with the Highland Street Foundation who sponsored two very
successful, and highly attended, free days – one at Franklin Park
Zoo and one at Stone Zoo. We continue to work with community centers, camps and groups such as the Greater Grove Hall
Main Streets, Franklin Park Coalition, Project RIGHT, Boston
GreenFest, The Movement Festival, The Boston Youth & Environmental Network, Friends of the Franklin Park Zoo, Emerald
Necklace Conservancy, Stoneham Chamber of Commerce,
Stoneham Business Roundtable, as well as outreach with libraries,
schools, after-school programs and many others.
With help from donations, we partnered with area hospitals
and non-profit organizations to present Dreamnight, a special
evening for chronically ill and disabled children to enjoy Franklin
Park Zoo with their families and caregivers free of charge. More
than 1,100 people attended this annual event.
We also facilitated another successful ZooCamp, our 17th
year of partnership with Camp Fire USA. Because tuitions are
low, this unique children’s summer camp is accessible for many
low-income families and the children receive a safe, educational
and fun experience.
“Zoo New England plays a unique role in the cultural life of our Commonwealth,
both locally through its commitment to its neighborhood and young people, and
globally through its commitment to wildlife conservation and preservation.”
– H. Mark Smith, YouthReach Program Manager, Massachusetts Cultural Council

PETER FULLER
DONATIONS
When Peter Fuller passed away in May
2012, our Zoos lost a dear friend and a
staunch supporter. Mr. Fuller was a driving force behind the success of our gorilla
program, in addition to making it possible
to bring black rhinos, orangutans and
other important species to the Zoos. Gifts
made in Mr. Fuller’s memory were designated to support the care and enrichment
of the gorillas at Franklin Park Zoo.

ALFRED HUANG NORTH AMERICAN CRANE EXHIBIT
The Alfred Huang North American Crane Exhibit serves an educational purpose to teach the
public about the conservation efforts being made to bring the whooping crane back from the brink
of extinction, and tell the story about the sandhill crane, another great North American species.
The memory of Alfred and his ability to inspire those around him lives on at Stone Zoo, a place he
loved very much. Every contribution, big or small, has helped us create a legacy in Alfred’s name
that will pay tribute to the kind and generous person who was loved by all who knew him.

JONATHAN GILMOUR
DONATIONS
In April 2006, Franklin Park Zoo lost a
cherished family member when former
Zookeeper Jonathan Gilmour passed away
suddenly at age 29. To honor Jonathan and
his commitment to the welfare of animals, the
Jonathan Gilmour Memorial Scholarship
Fund was established in his memory. The
fund was established by Zoo New England
with the generous financial support and volunteer leadership from the Gilmour family.
Award winners are ZNE staff members who
have been employed by the Zoo for at least one
year.
Each May, the Jonathan Gilmour Memorial Scholarship Bike Ride is held in Hollis,
N.H. Hundreds of riders celebrate Jonathan’s
memory and through the years this Ride has
raised tens of thousands of dollars to support
the scholarship fund.
