This was the Night
This was the night. The fir e was kindled and
the flame, gradually but confidently overcoming the
darkness. The great stories of God's love for creation
from before the first moment were told, and the
great story of God's love poured out in salvation
have been proclaimed and preached. This was the
moment.
The elect came forward. Do you believe, they
were asked, in the God who is Father, Son and Spirit, in the church, who continues the Son's work and
worship of the Father through the Spirit? Do you
wish to be joined to the faithful living who rely on
God's forgiveness and the faithful dead who hope in
their bodily resurrection? Do you seek eternal life?
Then they went to the waters of Baptism to be
reborn. They entered the Baptismal waters to be
made clean. They stepped into the waters and died
to all that had been so that they may live for all that
truly is.
They donned the robe of the new creation that
they had become. Accepted the light to guide them
on the way.
They were sealed, signed, anointed and enlivened
with the Spirit who now lives and acts in them. Offered at the altar to the one they now call Father.
Embraced by the church, God's people, Christ's
body in the peace they had longed for. Fed at the
table of the one they now call Lord. They were sent
out again, not to listen and learn this time but to proclaim and witness.
This was the Night. This was the moment.
Alleluia!
CONGRATULATIONS and WELCOME,
Ramon, Christopher, Erin, Jewel, Maria,
William and Leticia.

Easter Sunday: The Resurrection of the Lord
This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice
and be glad. Alleluia! Easter is always, but especially
in this Jubilee Y ear of Mercy, the victory of God’s
gentle but invincible mercy raising up Jesus, “faithful
witness, the first-born of the dead” (Revelation 1:5),
“first-born among many brothers [and sisters]” (Romans 8:29), conquering death in all its
forms, in all of us in the human family. In Luke’s
Vigil Gospel, heavenly messengers send the women
forth: “Remember what [Jesus] said to you” (Luke
24:6). In John’s Gospel, the empty tomb likewise
“sends forth” Mary Magdalene, Peter, and the Beloved Disciple, who believe though they do not fully
understand. Finally, Luke’s evening “Emmaus” Gospel sends us forth, as “missionaries of mercy,” assuring us that we will encounter the Risen Lord, today
and every day, in “the stranger” we meet along life’s
journey, in “the Word that makes our hearts burn
within us,” and “in the breaking of bread” (see Luke
24:32, 35).

Amado, quienes creían aunque no entendían plenamente.

Easter Sunday: The Resurrection of the Lord
DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY, April 3
EASTERTIME-why 50 days?
Attention to the meaning of numbers was
more pronounced in the early centuries of the
Church than it is now, and seven times seven,
with a celebration on the next day, the eighth
day, was symbolic of a time beyond the
structure of human weeks.
THE GOSPELS OF THE SUNDAYS of
Easter give strong color to Eastertime. The
first three Sundays relate appearances of Jesus after the resurrection. The Fourth Sunday always focuses on the image of the Good
Shepherd. The next three Sundays of the
season draw from what has come to be
known as the “farewell discourse” or the
“high-priestly prayer” in the gospel according to John.
EASTERTIME is neither remember ing
something that happened long ago, nor is it a
“keeping in mind” of various paschal themes.
It is Christ dead and risen in our midst. It is
the Spirit breathing in us today. Easter is
made present in the newly baptized among
us, the newly confirmed and those receiving
their first Eucharist.
Easter is a time for accepting anew the great
commission of the risen Lord to “go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations…” (taken from LTP)
This devotion was actively promoted by Pope
John Paul II. April 30, 2000, the Canonization
of Faustina Kowalska took place and the second
Sunday after Easter, the Octave of Easter, was
officially designated as the Sunday of the Divine
Mercy. In 2001, Pope John Paul II reemphasized its message in the resurrection context of Easter: Jesus said to St. Faustina:
“Humanity will never find peace until it turns
with trust to Divine Mercy.” He went on to tell
us the Divine Mercy is the Easter gift that the
Church receives from the risen Christ and offers
to humanity.
In June 2002, John Paul II granted indulgences
to Catholics who recite specific prayers on that
day. This Plenary Indulgence is obtained by observing the usual dispositions that are in place
for the granting of this grace through the Intercession of the Catholic Church: Sacramental
Confession (the confession may take place some
days before), Holy Communion, to pray for the
intentions of the pope (an Our Father and Hail
Mary is minimum requirement), when the faithful detached from any sin, even venial, either:
-In any church or chapel take part in the prayers
and devotions in honor of the Divine Mercy.
-In the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, exposed or reserved in the tabernacle, say an Our
Father and Creed. In both cases, adding a devout prayer to the Merciful Lord (i.e. “Merciful
Jesus, I trust in you.”)

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Fifty years or so ago, it was popular to teach that
every Sunday is a “Little Easter.” Today, after several decades of intense liturgical reform, it is more
proper to think of today as a “Big Sunday.” On every Sunday of the year, the Church is obliged to assemble, keeping the day holy. In most places, we
hardly attain the goal of gathering all who are in
Christ by baptism. Look around today and see what
a Big Sunday looks like!
Our tradition speaks of remembering, anamnesis,
as the antidote to “amnesia,” the tragic forgetting of
who God is and who we are as God’s most beloved
creation. On this Easter day, we are at our very best.
We remember who God is, and we remember who
we are in God’s eyes: beloved sons and daughters,
reborn to eternal life in baptismal waters. We rekindle our candles and reclaim our baptismal promises.
As a “Big Sunday,” today also reflects the character
of festivity and leisure that should mark every
Lord’s Day. We wear “Sunday best” today, and we
may take some time, especially in the northern
states, to stroll through a budding garden. It is truly a
“Big Sunday,” and how different our lives would be
if we took its values and traditions forward into all
the Sundays of our lives.

vida eterna.
