Getting Ready to Launch
As promised from our first article,
Valley Children’s Healthcare is very
excited as we finalize the launch of
the Down Syndrome resources for
providers and families on the Valley
Children’s website (valleychildrens.
org). As an initial service for
providers and families, we have
established a Down Syndrome
Support line (559)353-8880 and
a Down Syndrome Support e-mail
should families or providers have any
questions regarding coordination of
care, access to resources, questions,
on the tools, or general questions
regarding Down syndrome. Questions
and concerns will be responded to
immediately as well as monitored by
the Down Syndrome Subcommittee
as we continue to develop our
partnership with families and
providers.
In early July, Valley Children’s will be
adding to the website a Community
Resource Guide authored by Carolyn

Relationship Training
DSACC is excited to announce it's
next sessions of Relationship Training;
one for teens (14-18yrs) and a second
for adults (18 yrs & older) funded
in part by a grant from the Fansler
Foundation.
People with developmental disabilities
are the victims of sexual, physical
and verbal abuse at a rate that is
alarmingly higher than their peers
without a developmental disability.
A primary objective of this course is
to empower our loved ones with the
information and coping mechanisms
to prevent becoming a victim of sexual
abuse. Overall, the course will provide
information about relationships;
the boundaries and responsibilities
associated with them in a teaching
setting that will respect participants
different learning styles and abilities.
The curriculum includes lessons
about different kinds of feelings and
behaviors that occur in each kind of
relationship, as well as discussions
6
about appropriate public and private
talk. We'll explore how relationships
grow and move from friendship to
a partner/sweetheart, and learn
ways to talk about feelings and solve
problems when in a relationship. The
class will also explore how to identify
if your relationship has gone bad and
examine ways to end a relationship
and deal with your feelings in a
healthy way. Family values and
sensitivity are of utmost concern and
if concerns or specific issues surface
during the course, it will be important
to share those with either of the course
facilitators. Throughout this course,
participants will have topics that are
designed to promote and encourage
family discussions. We hope that

fundación Fansler.
Personas con discapacidad son
víctimas de abuso sexual, físico y
verbal a un ritmo alarmante más
alto que el de sus compañeros que
no tienen una discapacidad. Un
objetivo primordial de este curso es
capacitor a nuestros seres queridos
con los mecanismos de información y
afrontamiento para evitar ser víctimas
de abuso sexual.
En general, el curso proveerá
información acerca de las relaciones;
los limites y las responsabilidades
asociadas con ellos en un entorno
de enseñanza que respetara las
diferentes habilidades y estilos de
aprendizaje de los participantes. El
plan de estudios incluye lecciones
sobre diferentes clases de sentimientos
y comportamientos que ocurren en
cada tipo de relación, así como
discusiones sobre cómo hablar
apropiadamente en público o en
privado. Exploraremos como las
relaciones crecen de una amistad a
formar un noviazgo, aprenderán a
hablar sobre sentimientos y resolver
problemas en una relación. La clase
también explorara como identificar si
su relación ha ido mal y examinara
los medios para poner fin a una
relación y lidiar con sus sentimientos
de manera saludable. Los valores
familiares y la sensibilidad son de
máxima preocupación. Si tiene
alguna preocupación o surge durante
el curso. Sera importante que se lo
comunique con cualquiera de los
facilitadores.
lo largo de este curso , los
participantes tendrán temas que están
diseñados para promover y fomentar
las discusiones familiares. Esperamos
que apoye este proceso y sea un
participante de apoyo activo!
